I enjoy this book. It was a different take on most paranormal romance novels I have read. I like the way the author decided to take the story. I would love to read more from this series.
This book was absolutely fantastic. I've already added it to our list for order this year and will recommend it to students.
I just recently got an opportunity to read this book by Christina buyer. She’s an American author who writes a fantasy stories, but this is my first opportunity to read one of her books. I enjoyed it very much. This is the story of briar Rose, who is just a normal 17 year old girl, except that she is part Magicorum which means she comes from one of three magical races either shifters, fairies or witches. She is fulfilling the fairytale life template she’s been told belongs to her destiny, the sleeping beauty template.
Briar was adopted by three fairies who she calls her aunts. Luckily for briar. They are the only ones to come up with medication to help her stay awake and fend off one of her episodes. Well briar meets Knox, who is a bad boy and he’s a powerful werewolf, and he helps briar to unlock the power inside of her and find out who she truly is. so the story goes on from their. The world building was good. The storyline was excellent and riveting, and altogether made for a very enjoyable read, I’m looking forward to the second book in the series.
This was freakin' fabulous!
I absolutely love this author. Her ability to combine fantasy and humor is absolutely unparalleled. Will definitely read more by this author. As in, any freakin'thing I can get my hands on!!
Wolves and Roses (Book 1 – Fairy Tales of The Magicorum) - Christina Bauer
I was given a copy of this book by the publisher in order to provide an honest review.
Christina Bauer is an American author who writes many fantasy stories. Besides the “Angelbound Offspring” series she has also written the “Pixieland Diaries” and the “Beholder” series plus many more.
Byrar Rose is just your average normal seventeen-year-old girl. Well except for the part where she’s part of the Magicorum which pretty much means she is descended from one of three magical races, namely shifters, fairies or witches. And fulfilling the fairytale life template she's been told belongs to her destiny – the Sleeping Beauty template.
Which fits considering a powerful fairy cursed her when she was a baby, which now means she has episodes where the sleeping curse overtakes her. But luckily Bryar was adopted by 3 fairies who she calls her aunts. Luckily for Byrar they are the only ones to come up with a medicine to help her stay awake and fend off one of her episodes.
Yet unbeknownst to Bryar, everything she grew up believing, everything her aunties told her about herself was a lie – she is so much more than she was ever led to believe.
It all unraveled the day she met Knox, a bad boy who dresses in black and just exudes a sexy aura – and he’s a powerful werewolf to boot. With his interference or help, depending on how you look at it – he helps Byrar to unlock the power hidden inside her and discover who she truly is.
But uncovering a hidden power and unearthing secrets can be dangerous and deadly – attracting unwanted attention and enemies alike. Yet if Byrar can accept Knox’ helps and accept the part of her that has been hidden away all this time – then they might both come out of this in one piece.
“Wolves and Roses” is a YA fantasy story that is really tailored for a young adult audience. The author has made the teenage characters that talk and act like actual teenagers making them relatable and engaging to a YA audience. The world building was engrossing, the storyline was riveting, and all together made for a delightful and absorbing read. The story was left with so much more to tell, and I can't wait to get my hands on the second book in the series Moonlight and Midtown.
I am a huge fan of this author and fairy tales. I have always loved sleeping beauty and this retelling is absolutely fabulous. I love the twists on briar rose being sleeping beauty but she couldn't be more different . She doesn't like animals, can't sing and absolutely dentists the prince. The wit and the snark was very engaging. I really loved this story. I could read this one again for sure. Loved it.
I received this book as an ARC through Netgalley. Thank you for the early read.
At first, I absolutely loved the premise of Wolves and Roses, however, the further I got into it the more I wished it were a fantasy, instead of a paranormal romance. This book's writing style is a little outdated in 2022/2023. It has a lot of over-the-top angst. I would read this again if I didn't have a TBR of over 100 and growing.
I really enjoy Christina's writing, but there were parts in this that I just didn't connect with. The princess types was just a little off for me.
I'm thankful to have received this book, but to be honest I didn't really like it. I think the tropes and ideas behind this modern fairytale retelling are so overused a book really has to have something special to stand out and it just didn't.
An interesting twist on the traditional fairytale, this story follows Bryar Rose, who is living the Sleeping Beauty template. This makes her one of the Magicorum, even though she doesn't appear to be a shifter, witch, or fairy. Her birthday is in 3 days, and she hopes that with it's passing, she'll be done with her template and she can move on to regular school and regular life.
As a baby, she was cursed to fall asleep. She manages to stay awake through her fairy aunties' magic, taking the inhaler whenever she starts to feel an episode come on. Now, with her eye on freedom, she spends her time researching papyri containing the Book of Magic, which is supposed to help the Magicorum restore the magic that's been disappearing throughout the world.
Add in a Cinderella template best friend, the occasional jewel heist, and a mysterious hottie from Bryar's dreams, and things get interesting very quickly.
I really enjoyed this take on fairy tales, and am definitely interested in reading the books that follow.
*thank you to Netgalley for providing a digital copy to read in exchange for my honest review.
I loved this book. The idea of different fairy tales being a ‘template’ was something that was really interesting to me and it intrigued me from the start. This book was full of little twists and turns that kept me intrigued the whole time I was reading it.
At first, I absolutely loved the premise of Wolves and Roses, as the world building seemed interesting, and I love a good fairy tale retelling, however, the further I got into it, the more I wished it were a fantasy, instead of a paranormal romance. The whole subgenera feels very 2012. Additionally, I found the author's writing style and a lot of the dialogue to be fairly dated and over the top angsty. Lastly, I'm not a fan of insta love. That being said, I enjoyed some of this story, such as all the scenes of Knox protecting Bryar Rose, and I think for the right person, this is the start of a really fun series.
Bryar Rose is failing her Sleeping Beauty fairytale template - despite suffering from a sleeping disorder. Her fairy aunts are trying to marry her off to a prince, but Bryar's more interesting in studying ancient papyrus than getting married at 18. When she is caught breaking into a wizard's office, an unexpected job offer changes the trajectory of her life.
This was an interesting take on fairytale retellings. I appreciate Bauer's ability to seamlessly world build and story tell at the same time. I look forward to the next book in this series.
This book has a great storyline. The main character finds herself through the book.
It's a great story about being stronger than you think.
Oh and she gets the chance to find love.
Paranormal retelling of a Sleeping Beauty, this is the first in the Magicorum series. Bryar Rose is suppose to live her life as a fairy tale but what teenager really does what they are suppose to do? She does not want to marry the prince does not like nature and just wants to be a normal person. Enter a werewolf that she has mysteriously been dreaming about and then her life takes on a new adventure. This was a fun little read and I look forward to seeing what this author does to other fairy tale characters.
A unique storyline told in Christina Bauer's magical style. Bryar Rose's destiny is to live her life as Sleeping Beauty but she doesn't seem to follow her destiny. She has no interest in the princess/ prince life style and just wants to live a normal....human....life. If you've not read and of Bauer's books, she can weave her own version of fairy tales with a twist. Enjoyable read. This is the first in the Magicorum series, each a stand alone twist on a fairy tale.
The fact that the characters in this book live their life according to a "fairytale template", and most of them seemed to be going wrong, was a super interesting plot point for me. I did feel like this story was a bit slow to start and build the world building, the "group therapy session" was actually really helpful as far as providing backstory. When the story picked up, Bryar Rose had a lot to handle and the action and romance was interesting and a rather unique paranormal retelling of Sleeping Beauty.
Great book im so glad that you wrote this i love fantasy and your an amazing writer and the book is amazing keep writing more like this.
DNF left off at 47% - I couldn’t get into the book and don’t tend to spend time trying to finish books I can’t get into. It’s not that the author or the writing is bad, it’s just not my style exactly. The characters were well thought out and so was the plot, I just simply couldn’t get into it.
Interesting tale of Sleeping Beauty… the “therapy session” is spot on for angry teens wanting to avoid the situation. The world these characters are in is realistic and this story is great at opening our eyes to seeing everything without having to be told what’s there. I look forward to experiencing the range of books the author releases in this Magicorum
