I mean of course Marcia Clark can write a great courtroom drama. I think it will be interesting to see if this gets turned into a series because the main character has potential. They are flawed FOR SURE so who doesn’t love a good redemption story?
My imagination could not have played out the story and better than this narrator did! The pace of the story, the tension, surprise, spite, humor, it was all conveyed very well and will forvever be the "voice" of Charlie Blair.
The Fall Girl by Marcia Clark is an intriguing legal thriller with great plot points. I enjoyed the ride.
I received a review copy of this book from the author/publisher through NetGalley for my honest review. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
Not a bad legal thriller story, just poorly written. The leading lady has a serious drinking problem. Plot twists are great. Kept me guessing the whole time. Overall, this is a 3-star read for me. A good read.
YAAAS GIVE ME ALL THE MURDER INVESTIGATIONS AND LAWYER COURTROOM DRAMA!! This is where I thrive as someone in the criminal litigation field myself. Can’t get enough of it IRL or fictional.
I was born in 1995 so did I realize when I requested this that it was THE MARCIA CLARK who wrote this? Absolutely not! But this woman gives me hope maybe I can write a courtroom drama thriller one day myself. This is my first of hers but it won’t be my last. It was so good. So accurate. So fascinating. Likable characters to get invested with. Kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time.
Thank you so much to Recorded Books and NetGalley for the ALC!
Marcia Clark is back with her next courtroom procedural book and shows the lengths people will go to, to protect secrets:
Charlie Blair not only left Chicago for Santa Cruz behind but also her old name, Lauren Claybourne, in order to not only have a fresh start but also protect her family as well. Charlie has crossed the floor and is now going to be working in the prosecutions office and she hopes that it will be a slower pace and not get a lot of media attention. That is until the Shelly Hansen murder. Charlie is assigned as second chair to the case, and first chair is the office's hot shot lawyer Erika Lorman, who rules the courtroom there and just finished the prosecution of a Celebrity chef. But as Charlie works on the case with Erika, she notices things that are not quite right, not quite following the rules but not quite breaking them either. Charlie gets a bad feeling and feels like she is being set up for something big and unless she can figure out the secrets that Erika is hiding, that is unless Erika figures out her's first.
I really enjoyed Clark's Rachel Knight series so when I saw that Clark had released a stand alone book I knew that I wanted to check it out. I'm a big fan of Clark and her ability to write courtroom procedurals. This probably has to do with the fact that she is a former prosecutor herself, so she knows her ins and outs of lawyer case work as well as what happens in the courtroom and these scenes were my favourite part of the book. The mystery aspect is also well done and I was completely wrong in the direction that Clark was going to take the book, but I am okay with that, I don’t mind be wrong.
There are two main female protagonists in this book and for the most part they are very similar in personality but you tend to like Charlie better due to the choices that Erika made/makes along the way. But they are very very similar in many ways, which isn’t a bad thing, as they are both strong women, but just it just felt lacking in character development. And I’m kind of bummed about how it ended, it didn’t feel right to me as it ended too nicely and maybe a few things were left unfinished.
I think that Clark tries to do a lot in this book in this book and I am not sure if there was really any benefit to the plot line of Charlie and Roman. The only purpose that it served was giving Charlie a reason to leave Chicago and move to Santa Cruz and I think that this could have been achieved in a more simple way and save the Charlie and Roman plot line for a separate book.
I think that Clark is possible planning to turn this book into a series just with how it ended and I would pick up the next book in the series, especially if there are more courtroom scenes. I think if you like courtroom procedurals this should be a book that you pick up.
Enjoy!!!
I was given a NetGalley widget for this one a year ago and I just got around to reading it and dangit it was so good. I am so thankful for the opportunity to have consumed this wildly relevant fictional tale, which felt not at all fictional, more like historical fiction, due to the times. The cover initially was what drew me in, but I'm so thankful to have stuck with it because the outcome was magical. I always love listening to audiobooks and when they sweep me off my feet, I'm just utterly captivated! I always really enjoy multi-cultural thrillers, for I embark on a journey through a land unknown to me, while still getting spooked.
This was a solid legal thriller. I had heard of Marcia Clark after the O.J. Simpson trial, so when I saw she had branched out into writing legal thrillers, I couldn't resist trying them out.
This audiobook took me some time to get into, and I did have to restart it a few times before I was fully engaged and following the story.
I enjoyed it, the pace is fairly constant and I didn't guess some of the events. I expected to have authenticity having a prosecutor write it, and while it did, I had higher hopes for the plot itself.
I really enjoyed the audiobook of this! I was very captivated by the storyline and I enjoyed the power dynamics between Charlie and Erika. What a great duo I must say!
The story flowed very well from start to finish, and through the narration you could really feel the impact and the suspense.
The ending was very unpredictable, I really did not expect the murderer to be who they found – I was leaning in a completely different direction
Thank you for the advanced copy of this audiobook!
If you enjoy a legal thriller you will love The Fall Girl. Marcia Clark expertly brings this riveting story to life through her compelling characters and dramatic narration. Marcia Clark and Cathy Lepard’s narration add an extra layer of depth and intrigue to this intense legal drama. There were many twists I never saw coming and I was continually entertained and engaged as the drama progressed. Thank you NetGalley and RB Media for my audiobook.
I've read most of Marcia Clark's previous books and found them to be surprisingly good reads. So when I saw that she had a new book coming out I was immediately interested. I was happy to get an advance copy of the audiobook, and I enjoyed this book as well, although perhaps not quite as much as the previous ones. I suspect that my issue lies mostly with one of the main characters. Charlie Blair (formerly known as Lauren Claybourne in her previous life) has taken on a new identity to hide from her past, both figuratively and literally. It's a slow reveal as to the details of her past life and why she's hiding, but that keeps things interesting. She's a smart woman who makes some bad choices considering she's always looking over her shoulder. Wanting to bury her thoughts with alcohol and Xanax is understandable in one sense, but for a smart woman who needs to stay on her toes for her work and personal life it's a pretty bad life choice. So at times I was ready to yell at her to snap out of it. But there's another lead character, another smart lawyer, Erika Lorman, Charlie's mentor who's just won her biggest case, but finds that the verdict could be in peril. Overall I enjoyed this listen - the narration was very good, the story was compelling and kept me interested throughout, and of course Clark knows her legal stuff so it felt very real throughout. It appears that this is a standalone book, but if she turned this into a series I'd definitely read the next one - in part to find out whether (hopefully) Charlie/Lauren had pulled herself together and started making better choices, but also for an excellent legal thriller.
Thanks to Netgalley and RB Media/Recorded Books for providing a copy for an unbiased review.
This one was interesting enough. I didn’t fully connect or get lost in the story. It was pretty decent but I couldn’t really remember was happened or name a single character.
This was more a 3.5 star read for me. It’s an interesting legal thriller that I listened to as an audiobook. I found the narration quite slow and had to speed it up to 1.5x speed to find it more tolerable. Overall, it was engaging and I would read more of Marcia Clarke’s books.
This review was also published on Goodreads.
I haven't read anything by author Marcia Clark in so long, but she's been a favorite author for me for many years.
THE FALL GIRL follows the story of Charlie Blair, who has left her life in Chicago behind, including her old life as Lauren Claybourne. The plan had been working until the murder of a local bail bondsman.
Lives and lies are inextricably linked by a high-profile murder trial in THE FALL GIRL, the latest exhilarating legal thriller from bestselling author Marcia Clark.
Overall I enjoyed this thriller, and thought the audiobook done well, narrated by the author and Cathy Lepard.
*many thanks to RB Media and netgalley for the gifted copy for review
I absolutely love Marcia Clark as a writer!
Not only do her books have some amazing strong female main characters but twisty mystery that follows always keeps me guess. This story is no different. I tried so hard to get a copy of it from NetGalley and was approved but it was the day before it archived. Not to worry, good ole Marcia is always on my MUST BUY list so I snapped this one up. She has 2 series going and I picked this one up not realizing this was a new set of characters. PLEASE Lady Marcia, make this another series and WRITE FAST!!! I can't wait to see more!
OMG this book was SOOOO good! I went into it knowing that I already loved the author and after reading her latest book I have to say I am still in love with her work! She does an amazing job laying out the story and sucking you into the characater's world! I could NOT put this one down and am eagerly awaiting her next book b/c I've already read her entire back-log of books!

This is a good story. It does keep you on the edge of your seat at times when you are trying to sort everything out.
Charlie Blair left her life and identity as Lauren Claybourne behind in Chicago. She’s now working in the Santa Cruz DA’s office. She’s expecting things to be easier. Anything not easy, well, she figures a bit of vodka can handle that. She was coasting along just fine with her plans working out just fine. Then there was a murder. A local bail bondsman, Shelly Hansen, was killed.
Erika Lorman is a hot shot prosecutor who has an unblemished record and has a winning way with juries. She’s definitely a legend and earned the title. She’s just come off the prosecution of famed celebrity chef Blake Steers, now living in California’s penitentiary system. Now she’s being thrust back into action with her new co-chair, Charlie, and ready to do just about anything to get the criminals of the world behind bars.
However, this new murder case isn’t going well. The more answers are sought the more complicated things get. Secrets from the past threaten to undo everything from the case to Erika and Charlie personally.
This is a well written and well planned out story. The main character is mostly alright but she must be a super incredibly attractive woman because she gets a whole lot of male attention, unwanted, throughout the book!
This is very good though and I definitely recommend giving it a chance. I had the opportunity to listen to the audio book as well thanks to NetGalley and if you like them this is a pretty good one to listen to. I believe there are two different ones. They are both quite good with one being slightly better but ever so slightly it’s not significant. They both really bring the story to life.
This audiobook has two separate narrators which brings alive the story that is told in alternating chapters from two points of view. Marcia Clark, the author, narrates one of the characters.
Charlie Blair was a defense attorney in Chicago when she fell in love with the wrong guy. Forced to take on a new identity, she moves to sunny Santa Cruz, CA and begins a new career as an Assistant District Attorney. Her co-worker, Erika Lorman, is the District Attorney with a winning track record, despite her own traumatic past.
The two are brought together to help prosecute Mia, the daughter of a bail bondswoman that was stabbed to death in her bedroom.
The book has great pacing, dialogue, and character development.
This was a good legal thriller involving some of the procedural aspects that were evident in the OJ Simpson trial. Of course, the facts and circumstances were different, I enjoyed learning about the thought process that was involved in these fictional cases. I thought the writing was very good and the narration some of the best. This novel will appeal to trial buffs, mystery and thriller enthusiasts and anyone who enjoys a good story.
I received an ARC from RB Media, Recorded Books through NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion or rating of this book. I am voluntarily submitting this review and am under no obligation to do so.
Secrets, lies and murder! The Fall Girl is a gripping thriller filled with unexpected twists. It held my interest and would not let go. Three murder cases are expertly woven and revealed until they are unraveled in a shocking ending!
