Thank you to the publishers, author and NetGalley for the free copy of this audio book.
Good pacing on this one, and some nice twists that kept me guessing. The narrators were great as well!
Thank you Net Galley for an audio ARC of The Fall Girl. This is a mystery/ thriller written and ba narrated by the notorious Marcia Clark.
"When Charlie Blair left Chicago behind—and her old life as Lauren Claybourne—for a gig in the Santa Cruz DA’s office, things were supposed to be easier. Or at least nothing that a couple of Xanax and a tumbler of vodka couldn’t handle. The plan had been working, until the murder of a local bail bondsman Shelly Hansen."
This story is told through the voice of two prosecutors in the Santa Crus DA's office. Charlie, who has a past that she's trying to hide from; and Erica, the superstar and well-respected prosecutor who always wins her cases. As Charlie tries to stay out of the spot light to avoid notice by her past life she is thrust into joining Erica in the murder case of Shelly Hansen. Erica is not welcoming of Charlie joining the case, but why? What is she hiding?
This story is well paced and kept me guessing throughout. It is packed full of mystery, twists, and turns as you simultaneously dig into the murder of Shelly Hansen, learn about Charlie's past and how it's affecting her present, and try to figure out what Erica is hiding. The fact that there were so many things happening within this story made for a book that you just can't put down. I love a story with a mystery coming from several directions and this one did not disappoint.
I also enjoyed the narration as the author and her friend voiced Charlie and Erica. I feel like an author knows exactly how their characters feel and think and Marcia Clark did an excellent job bringing Charlie to life. I really liked every character in this story, they were well fleshed out and I think they would make for an excellent series.
⭐⭐⭐⭐💫 (4.5)

On Sale Now.
This book was a great pace and I loved the characters. I found the ending to be quite abrupt so I was taken aback once finished!
I did love the women in this book navigating in a male dominated industry. It took me a good second to get into the book but I couldn’t stop after the half way point.
I’d say the cover and story were overall just a little bit not memorable. I am writing this a few weeks after listening and it took me a quality second to remember what happened. .
Overall, was good good but not my favourite.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
This book was interesting and was mysterious throughout. It leaves the reader guessing the characters motives throughout the book.
Keeps you guessing until the end. Such a captivating listen. The narrators did a wonderful job. The story was woven nicely and flowed well. Sometimes details can get lost in a fast paced book with multiple characters, but that was not the case here. A mystery worth a listen!
I was excited to read a book from Marcia Clark and I really wanted to like it, but I just didn’t. This book felt so long and I feel like a lot of things were discussed in way too much detail. There were so many characters I couldn’t keep any of them straight, so it was very hard to follow what was happening. None of the reveals felt shocking in any way, which was a bummer when I slogged through the book. Neither of the main characters were very compelling and on the audiobook I found myself getting the two mixed up. I thought the narration was overall pretty good and I thought it was interesting that the author reads for one of the women.
Thank you to NetGalley for access to the audiobook of The Fall Girl by Marcia Clark in exchange for an honest review.
Unfortunately, I can’t tell you a single thing about this book other than it’s a dual POV thriller following two main female characters, and one of them is a lawyer. It’s not that there was anything wrong with this book, it just did not grab my interest at all.
I absolutely love everything I have read so far by Marcia Clark (yes, THAT Marcia Clark). Her courtroom thrillers are fast paced page turners that all hold my interest all the way through. They remind me a lot of John Grisham's work in the 90's which I also absolutely loved. The Fall Girl was an intense book that kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time.
A great thriller! I love how evenly paced the story was and then it takes off at the end!! I really hope to see more from Erika and Charlie!! 10/10 recommend!!
Give me a legal thriller any day. Marcia Clark delivers tension and twists that leave you on the edge of your seat. I especially loved that the author was one of the narrators for the audio book! Hearing her give life to her words and character was a treat.
I thought this was a really interesting novel. It is a crime novel; something I don’t usually read but rather watch on television but this book did surprise me. It was well written and you can really tell that the author has worked in the industry. There is a lot of background information that I wasn’t privy too before having read the book.
The only reason I am giving this a 3-star instead of a 4-star read is the narration. Obviously this was an audiobook but I found myself getting lost at times because the two narrators who each depicted one perspective (Charlie’s and Erica’s) were two women with similar voices -but different intonations… I sometimes got lost as to WHO was narrating. Perhaps that is my ADHD but I would have preferred if the chapters were read “CHAPTER 23 - Erica”
Otherwise I really enjoyed this book :)
I didn't love this or hate it, it was just meh for me. I really didn't understand the point of "Charlie" faking her identity but still worrying about the ex boyfriend finding her. I also didn't think that whole storyline made any sense with her going to work at the DA's office. Do they not run background checks? If her identity change wasn't official witness protection, her info wouldn't have lined up! Overall I thought the courtroom parts of the story were good and interesting, but the personal stories of each woman were just so unbelievable. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC!
I was really drawn in by the cover.
This book kept me guessing at every turn. I was enthralled with the characters and the turn of events in the story kept me on the edge of my seat.
First of all I have to confess that thiss was my first ever legal thriller and when I found out who Marcia Clark is the whole story shifted onto the next level! Because honestly who of us did never hear anything about the O.J. Simpson murder case? She was the lead prosecutor and she knows what she is talking/writing about!
But even before I knew this I enjoyed this book. The women are such strong characters I could hardly stop listening!
The story is a roller-coaster as well as the narration!
Thank you #NetGalley #RB Media, Recorded Books for this advanced audio version
Exploring the working relationship between Charlie Blair and Erika Lorman, two career lawyers, "The Fall Girl" revolves around two cases with high stakes and high profile. Neither are good for our protagonists. Blair since she's desperate to hide her true identity of Lauren Claybourne and Lorman as she's trying to keep a predator behind bars.
This law procedural is thrillingly paced. Secrets abound, stakes are high, and characters are always on edge. In addition, the examination of how women relate to each other at work was not only refreshingly free of clichés and tropes, but found the quiet moments between nail biting scenes to truly flesh out the personal and inner lives of the characters.
Every twist could have been predictable, but was not. Difficult issues were dealt with head-on, and consequences felt realistic. The result is a tale that is truly entertaining.
With one exception: the choice of dual point-of-voice was somewhat jarring. Chapters flip between Lauren/Charlie's first person perspective, from which we have an intimate look at her life and thoughts, to Erika - but in third person. It took some time, especially in audiobook format, to reorient to not only the change in character but the change in distance to that character. The reasoning for the choice is obviously - but the affect remains nonetheless.
"The Fall Girl" by Marcia Clark
This is the first novel I have read from the former lead prosecutor on the OJ Simpson case. I enjoyed this as an audiobook and really thought the Narrators did a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life.
If you enjoy suspense, this book is for you. There were so many strings that Marcia left open to pull. I never knew what would happen. You know how sometimes you start a book and can tell by the 50-60% point exactly what is going to happen and who the bad guy is? This isn't that book - you will be guessing until the end as you maneuver the motivations at play for everyone involved in the story.
I really enjoyed the character development of Erica and Charlie and how much detail Marica put into their backstory. They felt like three-dimensional people with real fears, flaws, and hopes. The book dives deep into exploring what these characters of made of and what is eating them alive. By the end of the book, I was sad to see Erica and Charlie's stories end.
The Fall Girl was written in a way that made it easy to read or listen to. The chapters were concise but still packed with action. There are a few different plot lines running simultaneously, so having a dual POV really worked well for this novel.
Read this if you enjoy:
- suspense and thrillers
- crime and law stories
- Dual POV
Overall, I rated "The Fall Girl" a 3-star book. I did really enjoy the story but felt that there were a few missing pieces. I felt strung along with the development of Erica's brother, who ended up being a rather pointless character.
I am a fan of Marcia Clark’s works and was thrilled to see this as an audio ARC for review. In all honesty, I struggled with this as an audiobook even though it was partially narrated by the author. I felt a bit confused with all of the background characters’ names and backstories. I think that if I had read this physically, it would have flowed better.
I did enjoy the plot and hope that we get more from Erika and Charlie in the future.
This was my first ever legal thriller and I think it was a very solid place to start. Marcia Clark's background really enchanced the story and made the legal elements feel grounded and believable.
Other than sparking my interest in this genre of thriller I cant say that this book stood out to me. The biggest struggle for me was the characters. Erika was fine but not particularly remarkable. Claire was incredibly unlikable and I found the audiobook performance of her character cringe at times. Its also increidbly hard to believe that Claire could change her name and get a job practicing law. I had a hard time suspending my disbelief at times.
A vague interest in the case kept me going and I appreciate that there were a lot of moving parts to it. I wonder if I would have enjoyed this more if I read it physically. The audiobook performance was monotone and the two narrartor's styles did not work together well.
4.5/5 I really enjoyed this book!
Narrator wise I really loved both of them! I really like when authors narrate their own books because I feel like their vision can really come to life and Cathy LePard was awesome too. I like when there are two different narrators for two different perspectives. They had similar paces so I could speed it up consistently and didn't have to adjust constantly.
As far as the story goes, sometimes it takes a while for me to get into legal procedural kind of books even though its a genre I enjoy. This book wasted absolutely no time though, I was gripped from the beginning. The characters were filled out nicely and had real depth. The tension between the two main characters created a unique experience and I was definitely left guessing if characters were who they said they were. The book was paced well and unfolded things slowly which I generally like better than an author attempting to wrap up every thing in the last two pages. The ending was satisfying and left room for future books which I would definitely read. Being a high profile prosecutor really makes Marcia Clark the perfect author in this genre and I genuinely loved this book!
I will be picking up more books by this author and hoping for this to be a series! Highly recommend!
Thanks so much to NetGalley and RB Media for this ARC!
