A well written historical novel that was inspired by real events that is filled with magic and British intelligence of WWII in a most intriguing way. Fenna is the main character that will stay with you after the novel ends as she exhibits so many qualities of a resilient woman. An author's note was included at the end that was informative and appreciated for some of the lesser known pieces of the time period.

Thank you for the audio version that was provided by the publisher and Netgalley for an honest review.

Fenna is an escape artist. She has been recruited by British intelligence. She is tasked with creating escape tactics and unique tools to help win the war. However, during one of her missions, she ends up trying to rescue her childhood friend and his niece. She is determined to get them back home safely.

Fenna is a very strange character and I enjoyed her very much. I loved her talent and her particular skills. She uses them to her advantage on numerous occasions.

Now, just know I am in the minority on this one. This has a lot of great ratings and reviews. So, just take this however you see fit. This story is just WAY TOO LONG, in my opinion. There were places I was like, “get on with it!” And then there were places which were extremely intense and mesmerizing. But in this case, the bad out weighed the good. Too many dead spots and too many places the author stated the obvious.

Now, I loved Sold on a Monday! So, this review is probably more about my mood than the author. I did love the WWII setting and learning about the magic tricks and how MI9 used these for espionage. Pretty unique!

The narrator, Cassandra Campbell did a very good job. She even did a superb job with the child’s voice. That is a stickler with me. She did pretty dang great!

Thank you Net Galley for an audio ARC of The Ways We Hide by Kristina McMorris. This is a historical fiction novel placed in WW2. With magic and children and more! The narrator did a fantastic job!

I listened to this book, the narrator was very nice to listen to. This is the first book I could listen to, this book took many days to listen to. Having to do errands, appointments, and sleep, but I really enjoyed this book!

Glenna having learned to take care of herself, her survival mind set helps her to adapt to the many. Difficult circumstances she finds herself living through. Ari is her best friend that she met at a very young age, yet they were lifelong friends. Ari was like her rock throughout many difficult times in her life.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and being my first audible book that I could listen to for the entire book.

This was one of my favorite books this month! The story of Fenna Vos and her work with the British intelligence is something new. Fenna is an illusionist; she has read about Harry Houdini since childhood. She works as an assistant to a magician, but she is the mastermind behind the act.
MI9 uses her skills to create illusions by having her invent gadgets, maps, and aids for soldiers. This was very unique! I had never thought about the need for people with these skills as part of British intelligence and I loved learning about this!
But then her past meets her in the present and Fenna is faced with some difficult choices. Who can be trusted?
I highly recommend this book!

Fenna Vos performs onstage as the assistant to an escape artist at the beginning of the novel, but after an act gone wrong she is approached by a man about taking a job for British military intelligence. She is put in the position that a choice must be made and she must face the demons of her past.

Thanks for the opportunity to review this novel.

Thank you NetGalley and RB Media for accepting my request to audibly read and review The Ways We Hide.

Author: Kristin McMorris
Published: 09/06/22
Narrator: Cassandra Campbell
Genre: Historical Fiction -- Women's Fiction

Narrator Cassandra Campbell was fantastic.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Ways We Hide. There was a point midway where I thought the story slowed, and in reality it did, but in the grand scheme I understand why. I spoke at an update time on GoodReads and wanted to clarify my thought. The main character is a spy after all. Houdini and magic trips are what hooked me. There is a complete well-done story.

Next, I'm not a romance reader; I do think the love story in this book is beautiful. That being a testament to the writing. It involves multiple people over many years, I cried, laughed, rolled my eyes; all my emotions were stirred.

The young lady develops an interest in magic tricks as a child and as she grows her skills become bigger and better, aiding her in times of trouble. She earns a respectable living as a magician. This is set during WW II and when she is recruited I was amazed by the tricks and how useful she would have been were this not fiction.

My apologies to NetGalley and RB Media my notes were soiled with a coffee spill, and I don't remember if there was profanity.

I would gift this.

I thoroughly enjoyed this audio book; the story was compelling, the characters well developed and the narrator very good.
Fenna Voss, a dutch american girl finds herself back in Europe during WWII, helping the war effort, but also searching for her chosen family and the love of her life in the middle of a war torn continent.

Thank you NetGalley for the chance to listen to and review this story.

I listened to the audiobook of The Ways We Hide, narrated by Cassandra Campbell. The narration was done really nicely.

The book captured me quickly in the beginning, but lost me pretty quickly after. I wanted to love this story, but I had a hard time paying attention and getting invested in the story. I felt like it was a bit of a rollercoaster between scenes that were really vivid and engaging, to other scenes that I had to rewind multiple times and still could not hold my attention. It was very long. I’ve found myself wondering if I would have enjoyed it more had it been shorter. I think there is still an audience for this book. But it just wasn’t for me. My favorite part was the author’s note at the end, describing her inspiration, what is real, and what was fictionalized.

Special thanks to RB Media, Recorded Books for the audiobook ARC via NetGalley.

Thank you to NetGalley and RB Media for letting me listen to “The Ways We Hide” by Kristina Morris. The author opens the story in 1943 with a young adult Fenna and Charles performing a magic trick on stage, a trick that does not go according to plan. Fenna is the brains behind the magic act, with Charles her magic partner. After one of her magic acts, Fenna is approached by an Englishman who wants to bring her to Europe to use her talents of misdirection to help the Allies.

The book then goes back to Fenna’s childhood where Fenna survives the Italian Hall Tragedy, which took place in 1913, but the author took liberty and adjusted the timeline to connect this tragedy with WWII to include the history of this awful event, along with WWII history. The author does an exceptional job connecting these two events with the imaginary character of Fenna. The author does a great job developing her characters with just enough detail to feel what the character feels, but not repeating those feelings throughout the book. You will know each character familiarly by the end of the book.

When the author jumps to the war, Fenna uses her talent of misdirection to make gadgets to help the allies. The gadgets and group (M9) making them is history, Fenna’s part is fictional. The book slows down during this phase of the book, it could have been more succinct. It did not slow down due to repeating the feelings of the characters, but just unnecessary storyline. The book then enters the love story part, which is never my favorite. This part is also slow.
This was a very good book with very interesting historical events, from a point of view not told by many authors. I had never heard of the Italian Hall Tragedy, so that was very interesting. The historical details were exceptional. I would give the book 4.5 stars, however I rounded down, as the middle of the book was slow and could have been written more succinctly.

Fenna Vos’ childhood love of magic has, despite all the odds, turned into her livelihood as an adult. Her knack for slight of hand and the art of illusion has her traveling all over America. Though she isn’t the main act, that is the young man Charles Bouchard whom she trained, she doesn’t mind not being the center of attention. At one particular show, she catches the eye of British intelligence officer Clayton Hutton, and quickly finds herself on an entirely different trajectory than she ever imagined. Her ability to get out of tricky situations makes her an asset to the allies overseas.

Initially safe in a lab in Britain, Fenna finds herself assigned as a field agent dropped into Holland and facing her past in a way that has her testing her loyalties, and stretching her boundaries. Fenna uses her experience as an entertainer and her knowledge of magic tricks to stay ahead of the German’s on her trail. Nothing will stop her from saving one very special little girl, whose family is relying on Fenna to bring her to safety.

Fenna’s loyalty to those she loves is admirable and she makes an excellent heroine. There are a few side stories, but they only add to the main plot. Kristina McMorris is a master weaver of stories, and The Ways We Hide, much like Sold on a Monday is worth the read.

Thank you to Netgalley, RB Media, and Kristina McMorris for the advanced copy of the book. The Ways We Hide is out now. All opinions are my own.

i don’t have a whole lot to say about this one. it’s a bit too long (an audiobook that’s +17hrs long is simply too much, particularly when it’s more on the slow-paced side for a good chunk of the novel) and most of the story was just fine — although i do think the romance was a little too heavy-handed, particularly towards the end of the novel.

I really enjoyed this WW2 story, it wasn't like any other that I've read, and I've read a lot! This story follows the life of Fenna Vos, from childhood, and the fateful event that shaped it. This historical event was the Italian Hall Disaster in 1913, that killed over 73 people, inlcuding children. Surviving this event because of a boy name Ari shapes the rest of her life. Fenna becomes a sort of female version of 'Q' in the Bond movies. Because of her talent, she is recruited by the British military during WW2. I found myself totally immersed in Fenna's story and how her feelings for Ari developed and grew. Fans of historical fiction, suspense, mystery, and illusions will enjoy this one.

This was such an elaborately written book involving so many things like magic, espionage, love, resistance movement, and life as an orphan. I can only imagine the sort of research and work this book must have taken. Just for that, I think it must be picked up for a read. I loved the resilience and fighting spirit of Fenna Vos. I loved how she took care of herself all on her own at a time when women weren't really given the opportunities we might have now. I loved how she was true to herself and how she was unfazed when there were difficulties. Definitely worth a read or a listen as I did.

I do not usually pick up historical fiction as I am more of a mystery and romance reader, but I enjoyed this story from start to finish. This is the first book that I’ve read by author Kristina McMorris, now I am loading her others to my TBR. Narration by Cassandra Campbell was excellent and added to this most pleasurable read/listen. She is certainly a go to narrator- one of my favorites.

Fantastic and beautifully prepared!!! A story of loss and fight and love and perseverance. McMorris has done a wonderful job of intertwining the moments in lives as the truth combines with fiction. Information on Houdini was fascinating and the epilogue gives the reader a peak into all the work that the author has done to bring this story to life. The narrator does an great job of bring the characters a depth that is already there on the page but giving them voice adds that much more to the story. War efforts are something that seem to be still coming to light and stories like this give a bit of insight into what people were doing behind the lines in order to aid in all that was happening behind the scenes.
