Thank you to Netgalley , the author and the publisher for a chance to read and review this book in exchange for an honest review. This adorable children's book has a wonderful story and really great pictures that should delight any child.
A cute enough book. The illustrations are strong. I suspect the messaging won't land with a lot of kids. It feels like the ending is a smirk, a response that kids don't fully grasp.

Description
A funny story about trying to outwit your friends. For sly little foxes (and clever dogs and squirrels) ages 4 years and up.
Olive the dog wants to play with her friend Squirrel. But Squirrel doesn’t have time. He has to gather acorns for the winter. And then Fox shows up. He’s hungry . . . Who will get what they want? Or will they all win?

This book is a great problem solving book for young children. My daughter is 5 and she absolutely loved it. I must admit I totally loooove the illustrations. They are bright and beautiful and each picture matches the story. The story was great and will keep your little ones interested til the end. The story finishes on a happy note.

The blurb says the book is about: Olive the dog wants to play with her friend Squirrel. But Squirrel doesn’t have time. He has to gather acorns for the winter. And then Fox shows up. He’s hungry . . . Who will get what they want? Or will they all win? but there is more to it than that. It is a story about Fall and preparing for winter, a story of friendship, a story dealing with change and considering what others are dealing with and a story about problem solving. The illustrations were colorful and detailed and added a lot to the story. If you looked at the details in the pictures, you could see much more than what was in the text. I read this to my grandchildren and they all listened and enjoyed the story. Each took different things from the story and we all enjoyed looking at the wonderful illustrations. My only issue is that I found the text a bit small and it might be a problem with some readers.
A whimsical little story reminiscent of Aesop's fables. Particularly good for "s", "k", and "r" sounds. Will Olive ever be able to play with her friend? What happens when a bully shows up? Great introduction into conflict resolution and rewards of teamwork.

I adore the illustrations within this book they are brilliant done. The first page shows a dog sniffing "creatures" and children don't usually think about earthworms on the ground, but the picture here shows their little house and mice and moles. I love the way this book stimulates the imagination because I'm a kid. A beautiful book about autumn, showing how animals prepare their homes for winter in various articles related to the book. It also has beautiful themes of friendship and understanding. Olive, the dog, is a bit selfish at first and gets annoyed when her friend Squirrel is "too busy to play" as she prepares for winter. Unlike the dog Olive, he gave her everything! I can imagine many children will love this book! This is a very cute story about a clever dog who not only prevents the squirrel's mate from being eaten by foxes, but also helps the squirrel stock up on acorns for next winter. I think kids will love this. I was a huge fan of Malgothia Zajak's bold artwork in beautiful fall colors. Perfect for children of all ages who want to listen to and read good picture books.
The dog was so cute. I liked the story and the illustrations. Perfect for children of all ages who want to listen to and read good picture books.

Oh my goodness this book was so super cute.
I loved the story and the illustrations. It perfect for kids of any age who want to listen to or read a good picture book.
The dog was so adorable.
I definitely recommend reading this one.
This is a very cute story about a clever dog who not only saves her squirrel pal from being eaten by a fox, but helps Squirrel lay in a good supply of acorns for the coming winter. I think kids are going to love this one. I was a big fan of Malgosia Zajac's bold artwork rendered in beautiful autumnal colors.
First of all, I LOVE the illustrations in this book. The first page shows a dog sniffing around for "critters", and children wouldn't usually think beyond a worm in the ground, but this imagery here shows their little homes, as well as mice, and moles, so I love how this book will encourage children's imaginations. It's a beautiful book about Autumn, and shows the animals preparing their houses for the Winter with various items around the book. It also has a lovely theme of friendship an understanding in it. Olive, the dog, is a little self-centred to begin with, getting annoyed at his friend the Squirrel for being "too busy to play", when in fact, poor squirrel is just trying to prepare for winter - unlike Olive the dog who has everything given to her! I can forsee plenty of kids loving this book!
In this story the dog, squirrel and fox each think they have outsmarted the others and that they are the smartest. It was cute to see how each character used problem solving skills to figure something out. The squirrel needed food for the winter. The dog needed time to play with squirrel. The fox was hungry and needed something to eat. The illustrations were colorful and detailed and added a lot to the story. I would definitely recommend this to young readers for a great fall story about problem solving and friendship. Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review!
Thanks to Netgalley and Clavis for a free digital copy.
A very clever book about a squirrel, fox, and dog all thinking they are outwitting each other. The illustrations are fun and give definite fall vibes and the story is cute and unexpected.
A clever funny book! Olive had a busy day. She wanted to play with her friends but her friends did not have time to play. She outfoxed the fox and outplayed the squirrel. Olive was the smartest of them all. You and your child will have fun reading about Olive the dog and how clever she was with her friends. It is a friendly book that will have you both in stiches.
What an imagination Olive has and what we can learn from her!
A special thank you to Clavis Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
A lively story, of a dog who gets told that his friendly neighbourhood squirrel has no time to devote to chasing games, as he has to stock up before hibernating. Which of the two will get their way – or will either of them, when a fox turns up to enter the fray? It's quite entertaining, although to pretend this is for four-and-ups as the blurb says is a bit rich, for the small font gives a fairly dense chunk of text on each page. But for those who can get the gist of the story, the ending is very satisfying.
I love the art work in this one, but I think that's where it stops for me. The story feels a little disjointed and long. It feels like with a little more work, this could have been a great book, but this one is just ok.
When I saw this title, all I could think was “wow, I probably could’ve used this book when I was a kid, as I was the biggest know it all imaginable.” However, that was not at all the message or point of the story, so don’t get confused. A sweet little dog goes about his day, napping, digging, and – yes – playing. But as he chases a squirrel, the squirrel confronts him and lets him know that if he keeps having to run from the dog, he won’t have time to store up his food for winter. Upset that squirrel is too busy to play, the dog mopes about, until he is forced to intervene outside in between a fox and his friend, the squirrel. Knowing how clever foxes are, dog attempts to save squirrel by outsmarting the fox. A happy ending ends up being had by all, and this little dog finds a way to help his friend and secure his playmate for the near future.

Aww this was really cute!
This is a story about a puppy that just wants to play. Specifically with his friends the red squirrel. .The squirrel 🐿 however has had enough. She can't just play with the puppy all day, she's got stuff to do and says so.
However when a cunning figure fox shows up to eat squirrel, who really is the smartest animal out of the three.
The age range for this book is about perfect. Younger readers may get scared or get bored with the long text.
I really enjoyed reading this book with my kiddos. It does a great job showing how each animal is smart in their own right with their own end goals.
The illustrations are also fantastic, the animals are cute and tad bit derpy with fun big eyes. I'm also a huge sucker for hidden details we can look for. Like burrowing animals under the ground being disturbed by the loud puppy.
Thank you to Netgalley and Clavis publishing for this advanced reader copy. My review is voluntarily my own.
I loved all the fall vibes with this book! The dog was fun to follow throughout the story as we met all these other animals. My kids really enjoyed this one!
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me the pleasure of reading Whose the Smartest by Ellen DeLange.
I believe among all of the excellent children's books I have read so far, this one is my favorite.
Olive the dog reminds me so much of my own dog who likes to be chirped at be our local red squirrel all day long in the summer. Come fall much like Olive's squirrel, our squirrel is too busy collecting food to stop and chat. It's a wonderful story that I'm sure children will enjoy as much as me
A dog, a squirrel, and a fox each want different things. Can they get them?
This book is a great problem solving book for elementary children. The dog wants to play with the squirrel but squirrel does not have time to play with him. Then the fox comes in and wants to eat squirrel for dinner. Each animal works out a way to get what they want and help the others at the same time. I love the pictures in the book and they match the story very well. I would recommend this book to young to middle elementary children.
Love the little mystery and the smart characters!
The book reads like a fun comic and the art is so lively!
Thank you, Clavis Publishing, for the advance reading copy.
