This folktale comes from Buddhism and tells the story of Lokeshvara. Lokeshvara is selfless, compassionate and is completely devoted to helping others. The story sends the message about supporting others and helping anyone in need. There are beautiful illustrations with a clear cultural infusion that help to tell the story. In a world where we desperately need more love and kindness, this book is the perfect one to add to a school or family collection. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to read and review this book!
A really wonderful book about kindness and empathy and how, even with a broken heart, you can reach out to those around you to help them and in return that can help you heal.
I love how this book uses a story from Buddhism and in such a way that even small children can understand what is being taught, and the illustrations are simply gorgeous and filled with images that totally enhance the story [and can be used to see other things happening along with the story]. I have read other books with illustrations by this artist and I would recommend her work to anyone.
There is a little note at the end end of the story and that further explains the importance of this book [especially now; we ALL need to remember to be kinder to each other, in the face of so much cruelty around us] and why it is important to be kind. I really appreciated the author's input about this.
I highly recommend this book - we need all the kindness we can get right now and this is a very good way to teach little about it and why it is important.
Thank you to NetGalley, Harry Einhorn, Khoa Le - Illustrator, and Shambhala Publications/Bala Kids for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I love reading and finding children's books from other culture's stories and histories! I think it's so important for kids to have access to learning about religious stories and mythologies outside of the ones they might learn about at home or more frequently at school and this one was great!
The story is easy enough for children to read and follow and the illustrations are beautifully done and work hand in hand to help tell the story of Lokeshvara.
