Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone is the latest novel by Benjamin Stevenson which will be available on January 17, 2023. Mariner Books provided an early galley for review.

With a title and a cover like this one, how could I not be intrigued? I simply knew I had to read this one.

Stevenson is an Australian comedian and writer, and his sense of wit, humor and sarcasm are evident in the narration of this novel. That narration is also done in a way I do not see often in novels - in that Ernest often breaks the fourth wall to address the reader and to allude to upcoming events before they occur. I actually like that approach to the storytelling.

Of course, this is a multiple-murder mystery as well as a commentary on family and relationships. Stevenson pulls the reader right into the story and keeps unfolding things at a very even pace. He does a wonderful job adhering to the rules of the genre with ending revelations that put all the pieces of the puzzle firmly into place.

Pub date: 1/17/23
Genre: mystery/thriller, humor
One sentence summary: The title says it all - everyone in Ernie's family has killed someone - and this is the story of their crimes.

I love Agatha Christie, and I also love reinterpretations of the classic mysteries she made famous. I loved Ernie's witty voice - including his asides foreshadowing significant events. It did get a little confusing with the sheer number of family members and other characters involved. The middle dragged a bit, but I enjoyed the beginning and the ending was also strong.

I think readers who like really complex mysteries/puzzles will enjoy this one!

This book was fun. An interesting word given so much death and mystery, however the tone was somehow light and comical. The narrator's voice was quirky, funny, and sarcastic- giving it that "fun" factor. I'm not going to be that person that says "I knew who the killer was blahblahblah." I was surprised at how it ended and enjoyed how it unfolded as the narrator gave each character a back story. An important note- there are A LOT of characters. I don't feel as though this is a story that you can put down for a while and come back to it. You might not remember the characters and how they're all connected. Overall, really enjoyed this one and I'll be recommending to my brother in law for a christmas gift.

Family reunion in the mountains results everyone killing someone. This one was witty, fast-paced, and I enjoyed the multiple plot lines. The author is intentionally conversational in the storytelling which made it more fun to read. The ending was a litte wonky, but it worked. On Goodreads it said it was going to be a series, and I will definately read the follow up. Recommended.

The title and cover art really grab you, An interesting structure, it is a lot to juggle.
The writer speaks directly to you as the reader, and I It is a challenge to follow the story lines and the many characters involved in each of the stories, it’s more like work instead of being entertained by a dark, witty narrative.

Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone

Our narrator is Ernie Cunningham who writes books about writing books. This is ultimately a locked room mystery at a ski resort, but uniquely and cleverly done. The wry humor with the narrator speaking directly to the reader is a fun way for the story to be told. It felt a lot like Lemony Snicket for adults!
Thank you to @Netgalley and @marinerbooks for an early copy.

Where to start with this review?

Set at a too-snowy-to-leave ski repost, this book centers around the Cunningham family reunion. Shortly after the families arrival, a man is murdered and left in the snow. Since everyone in the family has indeed killed someone (as you will learn over the course of the book), the sole narrator, Ernest Cunningham, goes about trying to solve the mystery of who killed this unknown man.

This book was a lot. A lot of words. A lot of characters. A lot of story. It took me until 40% through the book before I thought, "hmm this isn't so bad" and actually wanted to keep reading. Its not that I think the whole book was bad. It actually turned out to be a pretty good story itself, but I just could not with the narrator. He tried so hard to seem clever and witty, but after a while, he just came off as bit pretentious and condescending. So despite liking the story, this one just wasn't for me.

Thank you NetGalley and Mariner Books for my advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

SUCH a fun mystery!
i'm just getting into the mystery genre and this was the perfect introduction. the narrative voice was so different and i loved the satirical nature and the breaking of the 4th wall. I also loved the inclusion of the rules of mysteries in the beginning and how this list came into play throughout the entire book. my only complaint is that i did get a little lost at some points, just because what was going on wasn't just "A killed B because C". instead it was "A killed B to cover up for what C did 10 years ago because of D and E was a witness and kept the secret because F..." and so on. regardless, I just had a really good time with this book and would definitely be interested in reading more from this author in the future.

This was such a fun read! A dysfunctional family reuniting in a remote spot during a storm that leaves them stranded? Great. Then the bodies start to drop and the self-professed 'honest' narrator is dropping just enough hints to string us along. Or is he? I loved the denouement that tied everything up nicely after racing through the book to figure out who was behind it all.

4 stars

From the moment you see the absolutely gripping title of this book, you know that you are going to be in for a hell of a ride. Benjamin Stevenson's homage to the Golden Age of Detective Fiction has all of the strengths (and some of the pitfalls) that define the genre from an isolated environment to a cast of characters with something to hide to a detective whose day job conveniently makes them adept at solving complex mysteries. On top of that, Stevenson's framing of the book and distinct authorial voice give the piece a bit more of the modern flair that readers enjoy.

Personally, I really enjoyed this book and found it to be a really fun mystery with lots of little twists and turns. I would have loved the framing device to be woven in a little more throughout and I personally prefer big reveals to be a little easier to connect based on the clues given, but I definitely think that this would prove to be an entertaining addition to any mystery lover's TBR this winter.

Thank you to NetGalley and Mariner Books for an ARC of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review!

Ernie Cunningham is attending an extended family reunion at an idyllic Australian ski resort. His brother Michael will also be in attendance, straight from a three year stint in prison, a term that was earned by Ernie’s own testimony. The stress of this get-together is heightened when a dead body is found under mysterious circumstances and a dangerous storm front is approaching the mountain. Ernie is a clever, amusing narrator and presents all of his murderous relatives with a signature, cheeky, honesty. The pacing is quick and the twists are plentiful in this original thriller from Benjamin Stevenson.

Like everyone else, it was the title and gorgeous cover that roped me in at first. But it was the writing and very entertaining story which kept me reading. I just absolutely loved it. Will be looking out for Mr. Stevenson's next book. Highly recommend.

A good whodunnit with a few twists. I liked the characters and the storyline. A cold, snowed in resort while a murder is lurking about is always a fun read.

First off, what a title! I am a mystery/thriller lover at heart, and I knew I had to read this book no matter the reviews. It has all the elements that I love about mysteries. It has the murder, the dysfunctional family, the black sheep, the high body count and kept me guessing until the end. I am always disappointed when I figure out the solution before the end of the book and this one kept me guessing until the end. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars was it seemed a little slow in the beginning and took me a little time to get into it, however once I was in I couldn’t put it down.

I really loved the idea of the book I just had such a hard time getting into it, I feel like the more that I tried to pay attention to what was going on and follow the story the less that it made sense to me.. I really loved the concept and everything about it. I just think that in order for me to enjoy this book more I would need to read more books like this, I feel like this is a book for people that normally read a lot of thriller/mystery/clue type books and this is one of the first that I have ever read.

I think if I were to have been able to understand more of how things connect I would have less of an issue with everything. This is one of those books that you can really get lost with trying to figure out how everything fits and in the process of doing so you usually miss a clue or something that is really important which will make you go back and wonder if you truly missed something.. I wouldn't mind trying to re-read this book at a later date to see if I can get what everyone else did but until then this is what I will leave you with.

Thank you NetGalley & Benjamin Stevenson for allowing me to read your book!

I'm going to try the audiobook when it comes out. I think the flow of the book was awkward to read, and as intriguing as I found the whole premise, and enjoyed how Ernie broke the fourth wall (if you could call it that, considering he never put one up to start with) constantly, I found myself putting it down a lot and not being too interested in picking it up each time.
