I'm not sure I would've found this as interesting if I hadn't read so many of the Black Dagger Brotherhood books and already been familiar with J.R. Ward's vampires. My brain kept trying to place this story within the BDB world, but while it seems to be set within the same world, I don't believe these characters overlap. Overall, a short, enjoyable listen that's good for a borrow from the library.

Narration: Narrated by Jim Frangione who also does Ward's BDB and I couldn't imagine anyone else narrating her stories.

I received this as an ARC from Netgalley. Thank you for the early read.

I am gonna start by saying J. R. Ward is one of my absolute favorite authors. She knows how to write an amazing story. This audiobook was well narrated and I would listen to it again. I am not normally one to listen to audiobooks because I prefer to read them myself. It is a must-listen for all of her BDB fans (which I am).

I've been a fan of author J.R Ward since I began reading the Black Dagger Brotherhood series years ago, and was excited to read THE STORY OF SON, the latest novella and standalone from the author.

Claire Stroughton fears her life as a lawyer has taken a turn for the worse. When this deeply sensual vampire convinces Claire that his strongest desire for her is stronger than his lust for blood, she is compelled to give everything up to him, body and soul.

The audiobook was narrated by Jim Frangione, and I really enjoyed it.

*many thanks to St Martins Press and Macmillan Audio for the gifted copy

I recently started reading J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood and was super excited to find this audiobook to review. My main complaint with this book was that it was so short, which made the story move too fast. Overall though this book was a good book if you're looking for a quick spicy vampire read.

I listened to this book from MacMillan Audio! Fabulous job! The story is pretty short, only a couple of hours long but it checks all the boxes. Micheal is a vampire with a child like innocence that falls for Claire. A precious story and not at all dark. Four stars for a fun audiobook!

The Story of Son was a great read by J.R. Ward. Claire Stroughton is held captive by a dark, seductive vampire with a large hunter. She fears her life as a lawyer is over. He ends up convincing Claire that his desire for her is stronger than his lust for blood. She is compelled to give everything up to him. I enjoyed reading this book and can't wait to read more by the author.

Quick listen, not something I would normally read however I enjoyed it. I chose it due to the hype of a big name. Highly recommend checking this one out!

Thank you to NetGalley and the Publishers for allowing me the ARC of this Book. I am a HUGE fan of J. R. Ward, so the excitement I felt when receiving this ARC, is indescribable. My favorite series is the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, so this book was a little hard for me to process. I was trying to tie in all my previous knowledge of the vampire society I have grown to know and LOVE!! I know this is a previous short story inside another book with fellow authors, and is now being published on its own, so I took that into consideration when reading it. The overall writing was true to Wards magnificent story telling. Bringing the Vampire myth into the real world so elegantly. I just wish that I would of got more of the badass vampire vibes that her other stories have. I did enjoy the storyline of the lawyer rescuing the "monster" unlike most stories of the damsel being in distress. I would be interested to find out what became of their family and if she would ever write them into her other universes.

I wasn't sure what I would get with this novella. I've enjoyed a couple of J. R Ward's books in the past. This one was good. If you like steamy vampire stories, then you should read this one.

JR Ward never disappoints. This is a short novella in the BDB world. Michael is so innocent and pure. I love how gentle he is with Claire. Claire is strong, loyal, and absolutely deserving of an alpha male vampire. I would love to see Michael again somewhere in the BDB world. And of course, Jim Frangione does the most amazing job at narrating this story. That man can do no wrong in my eyes. His ability to portray JR Ward’s stories are unparalleled.

** This narrator was not one that i immediately connected with. He seems more of a true fantasy narrator.** While I agree with most reviewers that it drove me up the wall that the FMC became so lovesick over a man and implied she did not truly feel like a woman without him (barf).. I was still able to enjoy this book for what it was. An ultra spicy, happy ever after dark romance. I don’t know that this author intended for this book to be a feminist think piece. It’s meant to be taken exactly as it is: a dark vampire romance with explicit sexual encounters for a temporary escape.

This book is about Claire set in the Black Dagger Brotherhood world, it's a quick steamy ready, I got the audiobook and the narrator Jim Frangione, was good portraying the characters. It will entertain you for a bit. Michael is a character I really liked, would love to see their story developed into a longer novel and see them again in the future.

The narration on this book was perfect. This was a short listen and it was easy to follow and stay engaged. J.R. Ward never disappoints me when I need a spicy, paranormal read

The Story of Son
A Story of Dark Vampire Romance
by J. R. Ward
Narrated by Jim Frangione

I received a digital copy of this audiobook from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

If you are a fan of the JR Ward universe you will want to read this one and even if you are just in the mood for a short steamy vampire or paranormal romance you won’t want to miss it. It clocks in at just over 2.5 hours so there isn’t any unnecessary fluff. It can be read as a stand alone. This is her usual narrator so consistent performance and characterization is present.

Trigger warnings for being kidnapped, being drugged, being imprisoned, betrayal by a family member, undercurrents of Florence nightingale syndrome/Stockholm syndrome, being unable to remember having sex.

Some people may not be on board with the insta-lust going on here but when presented with a super buff hot considerate gentlemanly artistic virgin…. I mean I get it, I’m fine with it but not everyone might be. This is very fast paced and does feel like a bit of a whirlwind.

This is an open door high steam novella. Epilogue HEA.

5/5

I read this one years ago when it was part of an anthology and now was thrilled to get it in audio. Claire is called to the home of one of her older clients to do more changes to her will when she finds herself drugged and held captive. When she wakes she finds herself in the company of a beautiful man who doesn't have a name other than Son. He tells her he cannot leave and when food is brought he has to chain himself in the corner. When she is freed she plots to set him free. When the woman dies will she be able to? I enjoyed this the first time I read this and enjoyed it just as much in audio.

The Story of Son was a good short story. Claire was the type of character I like being strong and independent. Son was resilient in the face of being kept in a dungeon for so many years and caring of the way he treated Claire. I listened on audiobook and enjoyed it and the narrator.

This was such a great addition to the universe of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series! It was very well done, very well written and hot as it was succinct. A very spicy read and worth the wait, excellent novella edition to the series and a great dark vampire romance. I loved every moment of it. Looking forward to the next addition!

Claire is a career driven lawyer so when her longtime client requests she come by at 5pm on the Friday before Labor Day weekend she doesn’t hesitate to go. However, things don’t go as planned and she winds up locked in the basement with the client’s son, a vampire who needs to feed. She’s terrified at first, but this vampire, “Son” as his horrible mother never named him, is sweet and gentlemanly. Despite her reservations and circumstances Claire finds herself attracted to Son and the feelings are mutual.

Finding out Son’s sad story enrages Claire, but she’s got plans to change things if she can manage to break them out of their prison.

The Story of Son was a short, steamy, addictive story that sucked me in immediately! While set in the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series it’s not a part of it, but fans will definitely enjoy it! It’s a hot romance sprinkled with a bit of danger, and I enjoyed every minute!

Jim Frangione’s performance was in his classic BDB style!
