Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.
This was super cute! I really enjoyed the next installment in this supernatural series. It was fun, flirty, and super enjoyable and I can't wait for the next installment!
Smart, witty, and relatable,How is that even possible Not Your Exs Hexes was a lovely way to dip more into this romance subgenre.
I always worry reading this subgenre, because it's difficult to balance the romance and all the fantasy or sci-fi elements. I saw no such imbalance with this book.
Knowing spice is very subjective, I liked that it was more of a sprinkle than a fire hose (and I do love spice, don't get me wrong).
I just think this level of spice was perfect for this story.
Definitely looking forward to see what else is coming from April Asher!
This is my first supernatural romance and it was a lot of fun! I didn't realize until I was a few chapters in that this is actually the second book in a series, but that didn't affect my understanding or enjoyment of the novel.
Rose is a strong MFC with a soft spot for animals. Enter Damien, a half-demon veterinarian and sparks fly. Like, actual sparks. Cause, you know, magic and stuff. There is plenty of action (both bounty-hunting action in the streets as well as action in the sheets.) The story was a lot of fun and definitely made me nostalgic for my Buffy The Vampire Slayer days.
It is very rare that I pick up a book because of the cover. I don’t think I’ve ever decided I would read a book based only on its title. Well, I guess there is a first time for everything because that is what I did with Not Your Ex’s Hexes. I went into the book with no expectations whatsoever of the story, or the author as Miss April Asher is new to me.
What I got was a fun and cute paranormal read that I was not expecting at all. Rose and Damian start their relationship with a one night stand. They are opposite personalities, but yet have a lot of parallels in their lives. Even if the situation’s are not similar, they can understand one another. Situations have put them in close proximity to one another and sparks begin to fly. Feelings begin to awaken, and there’s no denying that there’s a connection. Now can Damian find a way to get free of his ex hexes or will he lose his humanity for love.
April Asher gave us a wonderful love story that had great characters, some amazingly witty banter, a dash of family drama, and a bit of danger just for good measure. Sometimes the unexpected stuff ends up being some of the best stuff. Not Your Ex’s Hexes is a fun paranormal romcom read.
This was an entertaining, well-written book. It was fun, steamy and I couldn't put it down. This book can be read as a standalone story, though it is book 2 in the Supernatural Singles series. I enjoyed this book and will look for more books by this author.
No Your Ex’s Hexes by April Asher
2nd book in the Supernatural Singles series. Paranormal romance. Witches, demons, shifters and magic. Can be read as a stand-alone but better as part of the series.
Rose isn’t sure what to do with her life. Her sister Violet, is now Prima, the next leader in training, a job that Rose had been working towards her entire life. At loose ends, Rose tries being a Ryde share driver, a bartender and a Hunter. She’s also working at an animal rescue sanctuary, where Veterinary doctor Damian Adams is in charge. He’s tempting Rose in multiple ways including a friends with benefits arrangement.
Entertaining with a twist or two that will keep you reading.
I love the sisters relationship of unquestioning support. I also loved the animal sanctuary premise and wanting to help find them caring forever homes.
A bit of humor from the heroine as she makes up labels / names for the hero.
Chapter titles are amusing and there is a bonus Q&A at the back on the characters which was fun to read.
I look forward to reading Olive’s book. The setup in this book made the situation intriguing.
Quoted heroine phrases about the hero:
“Damian was an xxx to walk out like a half-demon man-baby.”
“ she’d been up the better part of the night, figuring out a way to help the sanctuary that even Dr. Broody McGrumpy Pants couldn’t turn down.”
I received a copy of this from NetGalley.
4.5
I'd like to thank Netgalley and St. Martin's Press, St. Martin's Griffin for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I was able to read the first book in this series so I was excited to be gifted the second as well. This book was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed the back and forth between Rose and Damian. It really helped to bring out the chemistry between the two. I loved the supernatural parts in the book and that is where you truly see the two come alive.
This book has all the things. It was fun, supernatural creatures, cute romance with quite the steam, and did I mention fun. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.
I loved Not The Witch You Wed so I was very excited to see that Rose was getting the next book in this series!
Not Your Ex's Hexes picks up shortly after Not the Witch You Wed. Rose is no longer the Prima Apparent and is feeling a little lost/out of sorts in her life. After an attempted horsenapping goes wrong - yep, she's going through it - she finds herself stuck doing hours of community service for the one man she hoped she wouldn't be seeing anytime soon. Damian, local vet and owner of the sanctuary involved with the horsenapping, is a half-demon and Rose's only one-night-stand. They can't deny the chemistry between them, but Damian doesn't repeat his conquests and Rose isn't looking for anything serious.
This book was a lot of fun and I loved seeing all of the characters from the first book pop up again. Damian was a super charming love interest - love a little bit of a grump! - and I loved seeing Rose figure out what she was going to do next with her life. The banter and chemistry between the pair was great! This book definitely had it's share of romance, but I loved the relationships between Rose and her sisters most of all.
I can't wait for book three! Thank you to St. Martin's and NetGalley for a review copy.
3.5 stars. This was a pretty good book, but I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the first book in the series. Not Your Ex's Hexes is book two in the Supernatural Singles series and is Damian and Rose's book. Damian is half demon/half human and a former magical bounty hunter turned veterinarian at a shelter for abandoned animals. Rose is a witch and one of the three Maxwell triplet sisters. She recently ended an engagement after it comes to light that her sister Violet is actually the prima and heir apparent, and not herself as she was raised and trained to believe. She is very much at odds on what her future will be now. Rose hears about some horses that she thinks are being mistreated so she tries to kidnap them to take them to safety, but she gets caught and is sentenced by the council to volunteer at Damian's vet clinic. Damian does not want her there and is rude and closed off. He has a chip on his shoulder. In his past, a bitter high school girlfriend/witch put a hex on him that he can never fall in love or he will lose his soul. But as he spends time with Rose, they decided to become friends with benefits, when neither want to fight the attraction between them. Those benefits lead to feelings forming and they eventually fall for each other, while finding a way to solve the Hex problem.
I liked this story in general. I did find it way too slow to get going. Around 50% in, it started to pick up and the second half was much better. The pacing just felt off in general. Eventually I liked the story and felt the love and chemistry between Rose and Damian. Damian was closed off due to his past, but eventually couldn't help to fall for sweet Rose. I really needed more established couple time and I found the ending to be rushed. But I still thought the story was cute and enjoyable once it got going. I liked the worldbuilding and fun characters in the series, too.
Overall, this was a pretty good book once it got moving. I will definitely continue the series and I look forward to more from April Asher in the future!
I just finished Not Your Ex’s Hexes by April Asher and here are my thoughts.
Rose Maxwell trained to become the next Prima for the supernatural council but when her sister’s powers finally showed itself and magic declared that she should be Prima… Rose is suddenly in control of her own destiny but has no clue what to do with herself.
Deciding to liberate what she assumes are abused animals lands Rose with community service for the sanctuary she tried to steal animals from and low and behold, the vet… None other than Damien…. The half demon she had a one night stand with. As they spend more time together they both know they don’t want anything more than just friends with benefits and the arrangement suits them well.
As Rose tries to help the financially strapped sanctuary and spending time with the grumpy vet starts to awaken something in Rose. A passion she didn’t know she had but little does she know, Damien can’t allow her into his heart without losing his humanity but his heart seems to be winning a battle he can’t afford to lose.
THIS BOOK WAS UNBELIEVABLE!!! Rose and Damien… My new favorite couple! I loved the grumpy/sunshine dynamic that was going on and every time he called her little witch, I totally swooned!!
This is book 2 of the series and while I didn’t read the first book, it worked as a standalone in my opinion but I will be going back and getting book one and experiencing this all again!
It was a little on the spicy side. I would give it a 3 spicy peppers 🌶️🌶️🌶️rating but it was so well done. Loved the storyline and the building tension between Rose and Damien. Loved getting some of Damien’s history and the reasons why he is the way he is.
Loved the look into the supernatural and the softening of her mother. I cannot wait for the next installment.
5 stars! Thank you @stmartinspress and @netgalley for my review copy.. OUT NOW
Rose Maxwell had been training to be Prima ever since her older sister Violet failed to come into her powers, that all changed when Violet not only found her mate and bonded but she also gained her powers. Now she's the Prima in training and Rose has to figure out what she wants to do with her life.
A girl's night out is usually a way to sort things out, but this one has become Operation Equine Freedom. Rose spotted two very emaciated horses near a rundown barn on her way back to the city. She has plans for those horses to have good homes. With her sisters, Violet and Olive and her best friend Harper they set out with a horse trailer to collect the horses. Unfortunately for them the horses were at a very good home.
Damian Adams has been dragged out with friends Lincoln Thorne, North America Pack Alpha, his second Adrian Collins and Bax Donovan a Guardian Angel. His partner in the Marisol Animal Sanctuary and Clinic, Miguel is keeping watch over the animals tonight.
Then the phone call comes, from Violet to come get them at the police station. While Damian doesn't have to go with them, he finds he wants to hear the whole story of why the Maxwell Triplets were busted.
The absolute best is when Rose is sentenced by the council to community service at the Marisol Animal Sanctuary and Clinic under the supervision of Dr. Damian Adams.
From trying new things, to working at the clinic Rose is dedicated. She's also trying to find ways to filter donations to the clinic. She needs to be creative since Damian wants nothing to do with the bowing and scraping type charity affairs.
When she decides to take a Julian's offer of a job hunting it sets Damian off because he doesn't want her hurt or worse. Insisting on being her trainer and assigned to the same cases.
Then we have the physical attraction between these two that goes so much deeper than that. Both Rose and Damian are in denial as to what is happening between them which makes for some interesting scenes.
This book is lots of fun, with some laughter, tears and sizzle as well as a touch of action. I have to go back and read the first book in this series, it's Violet's story.
4/5 ⭐️
this is the 2nd book in the Supernatural Singles Series, which follows Rose and Damian.
i actually didn’t read the first book, so i went into this blind and not getting the build-up to the mc’s and of the magical aspects. nonetheless, this was a fun read! i haven’t read any supernatural romances prior to this book and the witch & half-demon aspect was interesting!
this was a great rom-com, with grumpy x sunshine characters; the best banter & spice!
thank you so much to Netgalley, the publisher, St. Martin’s Press, and April Asher for an eARC, in exchange for an honest review <3
all thoughts & opinions are mine!
Wow loved every minute of this book. The author wrote a wonderful story between a witch and a half demon/human. The snarky comments really helped with the love/hate relationship. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and fell in love with Rose & Damian. Their attraction was sizzling until they became friends with benefits.
This is my second book by April Asher and I hope it won't be the last. Her writing pulls you into the story, you find yourself laughing out loud, crying, cheering on the good guys and overall happiness. Damian is a half demon, half human and runs a sanctuary for animals, as well as being a veterinarian. Damian can be a grump, but he has wonderful qualities as well. And when it comes to Rose you can sense the sizzling attraction between them. Rose is a good girl type but can get into mischief without trying as you will see when reading this book. They compliment each other.
While I am not an eloquent reviewer I review from the heart and I loved this book. I can't wait for the next book in the series!
Highly recommend this book and series!
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for allowing me to read an advanced digital copy of this book for an honest review. These are my words and my words alone!
4.5/5⭐
I absolutely loved this! This was my first book by April Asher, and although I kind of wish I’d read Not The Witch You Wed first just to be familiar with the world building and the relationships, this worked just fine on its own. (And now I absolutely will be going back to read the first one, the entire cast of characters was so great and I can’t wait to spend more time with them.)
This was just so much fun all the way through. Rose trying to find her “thing” in life, Damian’s grumpy on the outside but softie on the inside vibes (The animal sanctuary! Rescuing puppies! Bonding with horses! Excuse me while I go volunteer at the next animal rescue I see), and especially the chemistry between them. There was so much fun banter and tension as they tried to fool themselves that they weren’t falling in love.
I also really love that the ending didn’t go the direction I was expecting, in multiple ways. So refreshing! I’m so excited to see more of everyone in the next book, especially because I’m obsessed with the setup for reluctant forced proximity roommates… GIMME!
Thank you so much St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!
This book was so good. I loved the chemistry between Rose and Damian. I also really enjoyed the fact that a really big part of this story was about Rose finding out who she wanted to be after dumping her fiancé and stepping down as the prima apparent.
I loved the relationship she has with her sisters and Harper. This book also gives a little peek into Olly and Bax and how their story may play out (ROOMMATES!!)
I was super intrigued by Damian’s brother Julius and I really hope we get to see more of him. Even though he made mistakes he spends the majority of the book trying to reconnect with Damian and makeup for the past and I really liked him in the end. I hope he gets a book because I love a villain redemption story.
The prologue to this book picks up right where the epilogue for Not The Witch You Wed ends so be sure to read that book first!
Thank you to the author and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this ARC!
My one issue was that I really wanted to know more about Damian’s mom and how Damian met Miguel.
Not the Prima
This story is Rose Maxwell’s, who is a former Prima Apparent. She lost the position to her “magicless” sister when her magic finally manifested. Rose isn’t sad about this, she’s happy to be able to just be herself. The other main character is Damian Adams, half-demon, who is a trained Veterinarian running an animal sanctuary. Rose has been a little wild since she’s no longer the Heir and has been sentenced to community service at the animal rescue.
This is a fun read, furthering the story started in book 1, Not the Witch You Wed. A lot more action in this story, which keeps things interesting. Rose is one of a set of triplets, so I’m looking forward to book 3 which will be Violet’s story. If you are considering reading this, read book 1 first. But a reader can start with this book and still enjoy it. Well written with great characters and story, I was given a copy of this book by NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.
Not Your Ex's Hexes is book two in the Supernatural Singles series and is following witch Rose and half demon/half-human Damian as they go from a one night stand to a FBA (f*ck buddy arrangement) to something more. I enjoyed this story but the first half of the book was slow to me. It did pick up and got a lot better. While this is a standalone book, I always recommend reading the whole serious for a better understanding. Always enjoy reading this author and looking forward to more.
Thank you @smpromance and @netgalley for the #gifted eARC of NOT YOUR EX’S HEXES!
I forgot how fun the supernatural world created by April Asher is. I was so happy to be reunited with the witchy Maxwell sisters and their succubus BFF, Harper.
NYEH tells middle triplet, Rose’s love story. It picks up shortly after the events of NOT THE WITCH YOU WED. Rose is no longer Prima Apparent and is struggling to figure out what her thing in life is. After a well-meaning rescue attempt aka Operation Equine Rescue fails spectacularly, Rose is sentenced to community service at the Marisol Animal Sanctuary. Much to Rose’s dismay, the vet who runs the sanctuary is a very sexy, very grumpy half-demon, Damian Adams.
Rose and Damian’s chemistry is off the charts but neither is in the place for a relationship so they decide on a very grown-up f-buddy arrangement. What could go wrong?!
This book is full of banter, swoony moments and the best magical puns. It’s light, funny and full of heart. And while I loved this one, I’m praying that we get a Bax and Olive forced proximity/friends-to-lovers book next!
NOT YOUR EX’S HEXES comes out February 7!

Not Your Ex’s Hexes is a cute supernatural romcom following witch Rose and half demon/half-human Damian as they go from a one night stand to a FBA (f*ck buddy arrangement) to something more.
Rose did not expect to see her one night stand again, especially when she arrives at an animal sanctuary for community service hours due to an arrest for a horse rescue gone wrong. Damian is the grumpy veterinarian there. They still have a strong attraction to each other and with the forced proximity…they just can’t help themselves. Neither wants to be in a relationship; Rose is trying to find herself and Damian normally doesn’t do repeats. An ex put a hex on him—falling in love would be disastrous for his soul so he avoids anything serious. A FBA is the perfect solution for them. But it’s never that simple, is it?
Bring in some meddling family members, quirky side characters, and dangerous demon hunting and you have an entertaining read! The banter between the two main characters is fun and I loved the witchy spin on sayings and curse words.
This is book 2 in the Supernatural Singles series. I recommend reading the first book prior to starting this one. I didn’t, so I had to play some catch up in the beginning trying to figure out what some things meant.
I recommend this book and series!
This fun filled installment into the lives of the Maxwell triplets is all about middle sister, Rose. Rose is trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life now that she has free reign over it, but when she mistakenly tries to steal a couple of horses from an animal sanctuary, is sentenced to community service working for grumpy vet, Damian. Damian is a half demon with a curse that he can’t fall in love or he will lose his soul. Both are attracted to the other, but neither wants a relationship, so they enter into a friends with benefits situation.
This was more of the supernatural goodness, spicy chemistry, and witty banter that I loved in April’s first book of the series, but with adorable animals to boot. The witchy triplets and their grandmother are still very much a part of the book, and we meet even more fun secondary characters, while setting up the next book for youngest sister, Olive. Witchy rom com at it’s finest is what you’ll get with this one!
Thank you to St Martin’s Press and to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book.
