It was a cute and quirky supernatural romcom with some spicy moments. I enjoyed it, but fair warning, it’s a little over the top with the supernatural references. (The sisters call each other bwitch and things like that.) While actual magic was few and far between, the lingo was full of witchy words and phrases that kept things fun, but was sometimes too much. The first book was also like that and I had actually planned to dive right into book two and just couldn’t. Suddenly I was annoyed, so I spaced out reading the sequel until I was ready for it and I’m glad I did because I enjoyed it way more.
Overall, the story was sweet and I’m a sucker for grumpy and sunshine romance! I also loved that Damian was half demon, bringing in another type of supernatural that we hadn’t delved into too much in book 1.

I read the first book in this series to prepare for this one, after receiving the ARC - I found my attention wandering quite a bit during both. I’m not sure if it was the storylines, or exactly what… that’s not typical of me when I read! I did need to stop around 60% and take a break (another full book), because I wasn’t connecting with it.

In the end, everything came together, but the overall reading experience of this series, or author, wasn’t really my cup of tea. Again, I’m not sure if it’s the storylines, or the writing style that I didn’t connect with, but this book (both Not the Witch You Wed and Not Your Exes Hexes) just didn’t capture me. I normally am totally drawn in with whatever I read (that’s all genres of romance, mystery, thriller, even non-fiction), and I hate to DNF, so that was why I picked up another and came back.

I had hoped to enjoy a witch and half demon romance - it sounded like it should have been an excellent time! Especially pairing a couple who had a former one night stand and she figured she’d never see him again but was now stuck with him, doing community service at his veterinary clinic… but, alas…

I am rating this 3-stars for everything above - I had very high hopes from the blurbs (for both books), and all of the other reviews I saw, but this series just isn’t for me. Hopefully everyone else enjoys it more than I did, and from the other feedback I see, it looks like generally, they do. I hope she has great success with the release! I have nothing against her or the books, they just didn’t connect for me.

I received an advance review copy from NetGalley and St. Martin's Press, St. Martin's Griffin, and this is my honest opinion.

NOT YOUR EX’S HEXES reunites readers with the triplet witches who always manage to find mischief and romance on the heels of their witchcraft. As the triplets set out to rescue abused horses, they get themselves tangled up and the escapades begin. Author April Asher creates delightful characters and while the outcomes are not huge surprises, wit and humor shine through. I received my copy from the publisher through NetGalley.

What a fun and funny book! Not Your Ex's Hexes not only entertained with the story of Rose and Damian. So many fun characters, and what I believe is an interesting twist on Beauty and the Beast. Rose is looking for her purpose, passion, and path for her unique witchy skillset. Damian is just plain old grumpy. I guess being half-demon makes one a bit grumpy. These two have all sorts of sparks flying from the beginning. Damian's passion project is his rehab shelter for wounded or mistreated animals. Rose mistakenly believes she's rescuing one of Damian's patients by stealing the horse at night. She's caught and sentenced to community service with Damian. Thus begins the sparks and passion.

The author did a great job of keeping the reader entertained but not serving up everything with a ladle. You knew what was coming, but it was handled well without being overwrought with drama and angst. In fact, the way it was handled was delightful. I now want to read the other book because this cast of characters, their unique slang (which never leaves you lost), the bromances, and the love between the triplet sisters are so engaging I don't want to leave. I give this book five pink and golden stars, just like Rose's magic!

Another absolutely ridiculous, very fun romance featuring witches, shifters, and demons, oh my! This time we get to hang with Rose, the middle Maxwell sister, who decides that she's going to save some emaciated horses that she sees in a field. Unfortch for her, they had just been rescued, and that field is part of an animal sanctuary. The Supernatural Council sentences her to community service at that sanctuary, where Rose has to deal with the super-grumpy-hot-demon owner, Damian. It's super chill (yeah right).

3.75stars rounded up! This series is a fun escape, and I'd recommend it if you want some goofiness alongside a nice romance!

Thanks to Netgalley and St Martin's Press for the e-ARC.

I have always wondered why I am Team Angel when it comes to Buffy The Vampire Slayer. My question has finally been answered, it has something to do with dark brooding men. That is Damien Adams.

April Asher has done it again. I know I loved Not The Witch You Wed, and I really really loved Not Your Ex's Hexes. Rose is by far one of my favorite characters of all time. I loved her sarcasm, dark humor, and how she finally found her niche.

Damien is....definitely my new book boyfriend. The way he thought he could keep his dark demon inside forever was just not going to happen.

Watching the relationship unfold from a FWB to Love was obviously predictable.

The Buffy and Supernatural references were perfect.

This is the second novel of the Maxwell sisters and it was so much fun. In this one it focuses on Rose, the former Prima who is trying to find herself in this world. I loved this one a lot better than the first. If you like the sunshine grumpy trope and a sexy half demon veterinarian-this book is for you. He even has a frggin animal sanctuary- SWWOON!.
This was a cute steamy witchy romance and I can't wait to read the third book.

Thank you St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review

Release Date: February 7, 2022

This was a fun read. After training to be the Prima her whole life, Rose is now trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life now that she is no longer Prima apparent. When she is sentenced to community service at Damian's animal sanctuary things start to heat up between Rose and Damian. Both characters are pretty stubborn and they definitely like to banter. I liked the characters together. Even though each character had some setbacks, they helped the other grow.

I always enjoy the scenes with the sister's together as well and look forward to reading Olive's story.

This book was given to me by Netgalley and St. Martin's Press in exchange for an honest review.

Not Your Ex’s Hexes was just as delightful, witchy, and entertaining as Not the Witch You Wed. But this time there is the added bonus of cute rescue animals to tug at the heart strings with the action adventure of bounty hunting bad supernaturals.

Sentenced to community service at the animal sanctuary run by the half-Demon veterinarian, Rose suggests a friends with benefits agreement (after all, they did have a bar hookup several months prior).

This was filled with flirty banter, demon hunting, magic, and sisterly bonds. I really enjoyed watching Rose’s transformation from what had been expected of her to finding her own path. And Rose’s sarcastic comments during tense moments had me laughing because it’s something I do when I’m nervous.

In this paranormal rom com you can expect:
🐾 Curvy heroine
🐾 Friends with benefits
🐾 Grumpy x sunshine
🐾 Adorable rescue animals
🐾 All the supernaturals - shifters, vampires, demons, witches and more

I’m excited for the next installment of this series. It’s quickly become one of my favorite paranormal rom coms.

Rose Maxwell stepped down from her role as Prima and now will focus on herself. When she's sentenced to community service, it's at the animal sanctuary that half-demon veterinarian Damian Adams runs. They had a one-night stand, and now that attraction grows more intense. Working with demons comes easily to Rose, pushing Damian back into the world of demons he left behind. He doesn't approve of her becoming a Hunter, but telling her no all but assures she'll do it anyway. He cares far too much about Rose, but can't let that happen; cursed by his ex, if he falls in love, he'll lose his humanity as well as his heart.

Not Your Ex's Hexes is the second book of the Supernatural Singles series, following Not The Witch You Wed. The eldest Maxwell triplet was paired off in that book, which is referenced here. The text explains all you need to know, and this story is all about Rose. She and Damian are attracted to each other but have their fears of a relationship: Rose never had fulfilling relationships in the past, and Damian had an ex that cursed him with a Soul Hex as a teen. He thinks it's essentially cursing him to a life alone if he wants to retain his humanity, and that he shouldn't have more than one night stands. Rose is trying to figure out what to do with herself now that every waking moment isn't tied up with being the Prima. Hunting is easy, especially when the two work together. It's almost too seamless until the inevitable stumbling block.

Rose has a way with animals and most people, which she doesn't think much of. I'm impressed even if she isn't, and I enjoyed reading about her time on the refuge. The relationship between Damian and Rose is such fun to read, and the book is one I thoroughly enjoyed.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU. To the publisher, Netgalley, and April Asher for this arc in exchange for an honest review.

I thoroughly enjoyed book one, Not the Witch, you Wed, and book 2 was just as incredible. A lot of times book 2, or movie two, or whatever after a debut or start of a series are noticeably not as good. But this was 100% not the case for this series. I loved every second of it! It was so funny, witty, silly, and low angst/trigger. And I found that to be so refreshing in a book that had magic and shifters and witches, and all those good things. Their romance and chemistry was so*chefs kiss*and the sexy scenes were so freaking good and so hot. I loved every second of reading this book. And I want to re-read it immediately because I don’t want to be without this world and these incredible characters any longer than I have to be. I absolutely cannot wait for book 3. I am so excited for it I can’t even put it into words.

Brava!

What's it about (in a nutshell):
Not Your Ex's Hexes by April Asher is a laugh-out-loud romantic comedy about a female witch and a male demon who had loads of chemistry, yet each resolved to have no serious commitments. But love doesn't care about your resolutions. It will not be denied when it happens, and big declarations are a must. This is the second book in a series, but you can easily read it as a standalone.

Reading Experience:
Where do I begin? I loved this story. Sure, it made me cry in the first half – tears of heartache and joy – because I can't handle animal stories. My heart breaks when an animal is mistreated or suffers from loss or pain. I even cry during trailers of movies about animals – my empathy is that bad. I had read that there were animal cruelty triggers, but I figured out what they probably involved just by the book description, and I was correct. It didn't stop my heartache, but I got through it and enjoyed the rest of the story immensely.

I loved the references – almost love letter level – to popular tv shows. The plot is very much like the one found in Buffy the Vampire Slayer concerning the hex. The main character, Rose Maxwell, even admitted she was basing her snark during demon hunts on Buffy during her hunting. I love snark. It's what made Buffy the Vampire Slayer one of my favorite shows. It makes this book one of my favorite romantic comedies. Also, a smaller reference- a character refers to Lucifer as Lucy, which I've only seen one other place – on the show Lucifer. It's another show that I loved for its wit and snark.

To say that it's an open-door romance is almost downplaying it. An open door is not my favorite romance aspect, but I can easily fast-forward through those scenes. It's interesting, but it felt that a story about a witch and a demon had to be an open door. It would have lost some of its suspended disbelief power if it hadn't.

As for tropes, it's got bits of enemies to lovers and bits of forced proximity. However you want to categorize it, I enjoyed it and found the romance felt very authentic.

Characters:
Rose Maxwell is a powerful witch. She is the middle sister of triplets, and all three sisters are very close. She used to be the Prima Witch Apparent until the oldest of the triplets, Violet Maxwell, came into her powers as an adult. At that point, she felt it was only right to step down and let her sister take her rightful position. But she had spent her life training – physically and magically for the powerful position, so trying to figure out what to do now has been particularly problematic. She has just gotten out of a terrible relationship and finds herself without a job or a love interest. Still, she is perfectly fine with that second part.

Damian Adams is a half-demon who left the demon world behind to become a vet and run a sanctuary for abused animals. He is grumpy and ill-tempered, but he has the biggest heart when working with animals.
A hex when he was a teenager has made him spend a lifetime avoiding love, and then he meets Rose.

Narration & Pacing:
The pacing is rapid, which I, of course, loved. And the narration is in the third person focusing exclusively on Rose's POV. The pacing and narration worked perfectly to hold my interest. I find that relatability is essential in a romantic comedy, and this one gloriously had that factor.

World-building:
The world-building is very detailed and immersive, which is extraordinary, especially in a romantic comedy. The supernatural world's politics and hierarchy are explained in great detail, as is how humans learned about supernatural beings and how they have learned to co-exist. The magic could be more detailed, but it felt better described than I realized as I wrote this. Still, magic is present often, and I never will be unhappy with that!

Read if you like:

April Asher's Supernatural Singles books make me absolutely giddy. I adore her character with my whole heart, but this one specifically is outstanding. After the unforeseen events of the first book, Rose Maxwell is searching to find her calling for what she's supposed to do in her life. Her journey to find that purpose as someone who's had her whole life laid out her until recently is heartwarming. She finds new friends, tries some different jobs, and meets a very grumpy veterinarian. Experiencing Rose's journey with her was something that I thoroughly loved and I would highly recommend that everyone experience it with her.

I didn’t read the first book in the series and maybe I would have had a better grasp of the background of the main character but I do think this could be read without reading the first, just need to read the clues for more info. I found this book to be just ok. I didn’t hate it, didn’t love it. Rose kind of got on my nerves, but I did enjoy her and Damien’s banter and friends with benefits vibe. Had some steamy scenes if you’re into that!

GRUMPY SUNSHINE & all the vibes !! Damien and Rose made me laugh, cry, and fall in love with this book. The writing was done so tremendously & the development of the plot, and characters were perfectly executed.

Stop the cauldron! This witchy romance brought the heat. We loved the second Maxwell sister’s story. Previously mated to a bad supernatural kitty, Rose is ready to take the world by storm. No one can stand in her way until the sexy part demon veterinarian finds his way in. Damian should be a slam dunk new lover interact but no, Asher throws us for a delightful hoop. Damian has a hex placed on him - we learn all about him and his hex across this captivating novel.

The Maxwell sisters continue to be a delight and we are left with an HEA that is awesome. I’m sooooo anticipating olive’s story next.

Highlights:

🪄 A hex to end all hexes
🐴 animal sanctuary hijinx
🧙‍♀️ witchy heroine
😈 demon love interest
👯‍♀️ sister love that cannot be replaced

Thank you Net Galley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC. All opinions here are my own.

The best way to describe Not Your Exes Hexes is the story of a witch who has a one night stand with a demon and ends up fully entangled in his life afterwards. It is quite steamy with magic, a supernatural theme and a wild horse that needs a gentle touch. Clearly way off base from what I normally read but it was a fun one. Nice to mix it up and I was definitely entertained in this made up world. It is part of a series so I need to go back and read the first one.
