This book was just not for me, even though I expected to enjoy it. Independent female lead, grumpy loner male lead, a little bit of witchcraft... what's not to love?

Plenty, at least for me. The female lead, Rose, seemed bland and not very nice. Perhaps I would have felt differently if I had read the first book in the series, but I wasn't really invested in her journey of self-discovery - and although much was made, at the start of the book, of Rose's need to find herself, that need rarely seemed to drive the plot.

The supernatural world of the novel was also not my favorite. It felt overly elaborate and somewhat random - again, perhaps because I didn't read the first book - and new rules and classes of being appeared apparently at random.

Still, this wasn't a bad book. It was well-written. Damian, the male lead, was a great character. The ending despite feeling as scattershot as the other magical elements of the story, was compelling and emotionally resonant.

Not Your Exe's Hexes is the sequel to Not the Witch You Wed. Had it not been for receiving the ARC of this book via NetGalley and St. Martin's Griffin, I more than likely wouldn't have found this series.

After reading Not the Witch You Wed, I knew that April Asher would be a new favorite paranormal romance author for me; however, I wasn't anticipating the second book to be even better!! The writing in this book is just delectable. I thoroughly enjoyed the dynamics between our two main characters and the extended store that carried on from the first novel. The glossary in the back makes it possible to read this book on its own, but I highly suggest you start with the first to get the full scope of the world. I cannot wait for the next installment and I am hoping that we don't stop with the Maxwell triad! I need a book for Harper and a book for Julius now too!!!

Trained her whole life to be Prima, Rose Maxwell has ceded the title to her sister. Now she’s at odds with what to do with her life. After a serious misstep leads to her serving community service at an animal sanctuary, she finds herself attracted to her boss, half human, half demon, Damian Adams. Who also happens to be a previous one-night stand. Both agree they’re up for a friends-with-benefits only relationship.

This was entertaining, even though I didn’t feel the pull between the two MCs until almost halfway through the book. It wasn’t high on spice or witty banter. It was a cute story, though, and the perfect follow-up to Asher’s earlier book, Not the Witch You Wed. Perfect for Valentine’s Day reading.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this ARC.

I just really enjoy the heck out of this series! These books are just plain FUN!!

This particular story follows Rose Maxwell. Having been training her entire life to be the Prima, following the events of book one she has stepped down and now gets to focus on herself! She actively sets out to find her passion in life and in doing so lands herself in hot water with The Council.

Sentenced to community service at an animal sanctuary she finds that her new boss is the one night stand she has a couple months previously, and the (half) man she can’t get out of her head!

Damian is trying to live a quiet life. The trauma of his childhood as the son of a Prince of Hell, a troubled youth spent as a demonic bounty Hunter, and a hex placed on his very soul has our grumpy hero secluding himself and pushing everyone away. Enter Rose. He can’t get her out of his head and the more time they spend together the more at risk his heart and soul is.

Read this is you like:
-forced proximity
-one night stand turned F buddies turned lovers
-near death experiences
-lots of banter and witchy puns
-senior citizen bingo
-grumpy/sunshine
-a motorcycle riding MC that can cradle baby puppies gently but ravish in the bedroom.
-sister and brother bonds
-lots and lots of Buffy references!

All in all- I enjoyed this one just as much as I enjoyed the first book and I can’t wait for the next book!

Sweet and funny, I enjoyed this fresh romcom where a witch trying to find her place in the world finds her calling helping a half-demon vet raise funds for his animal sanctuary. Of course, shenanigans ensue (medium spice level) and questions arise-can a soul hex be broken? Are they dated mates? This comes out February 7th, perfect timing for a little Valentine’s reading.

From the publisher:

For her entire life, Rose Maxwell trained to become the next Prima on the Supernatural Council. Now that she’s stepped down, it’s time for this witch to focus on herself. And not think about her impulsive one-night stand with Damian Adams, a half-Demon Veterinarian who she can’t get out of her head. Neither of them is looking for a relationship. But when Rose is sentenced to community service at Damian’s animal sanctuary it becomes impossible for them to ignore their sparking attraction. A friends-with-benefits, no feelings, no strings arrangement works perfectly for them both.

After a sequence of dead-end jobs, it’s not until Rose tangos with two snarly demons that she thinks she’s finally found her path. However, this puts Damian back on the periphery of a world he thought he left behind. He doesn’t approve of Rose becoming a Hunter, but if there's one thing he's learned about the stubborn witch, it was telling her not to do something was one sure-fire way to make sure she did.

Working—and sleeping—together awakens feelings Damian never knew he had...and shouldn't have. Because thanks to his ex's hex, if he falls in love, he'll not only lose his heart—but his humanity.

My review:
Rose and Damian are supernatural. She’s a witch, he’s half demon. I really like books where the supes are just out living life and they have regular “norm” problems. This is the second book in a series and I didn’t read the first but it stands alone just fine. (I will go back and read the first though!)

Rose isn’t sure what her path is in life (not the heir apparent witch, not a good ride share driver, not a bartender) and Damian the sexy veterinarian has been hexed so that he can’t really fall in love, or else. They both love animals and have some “do gooder” tendencies. Regular rom-com tropes are plentiful in this book and they play out well. They don’t like each other at first, but they definitely respect each other and grow from there. There are even life threatening problems and common enemies! I enjoyed the dialogue in the book as well as the secondary characters. I look forward to more about Rose’s sister Olive and maybe even their succubus (lol) friend Harper. Plus, the racy scenes were fun ;). The supernatural aspects of the book lift this up and make it more than a run of the mill rom-com.

Entertaining, fun, kept me reading!

I will leave a review on Amazon and B&N on February 7th

Not Your Ex's Hexes is the second book in the series, and this was a new author for me. I really enjoyed Damian's character, Rose really not so much. Overall this was a good read, but in my opinion not a great read. Having said that I would recommend it to others because I realize not everyone enjoys the same books.

I received an ARC from NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for free, and I am leaving my review voluntarily.

The writing and characters both felt a little too immature for my liking.

Not Your Ex's Hexes was a cute follow-up to Not the Witch You Wed. April Asher has created a magical, supernatural world that is fun to be in. While this book didn't wow me as much as the first one, it was still enjoyable.

This book is the story of the middle triplet, Rose, and begins after she steps down as Prima Apparent to let Violet take her rightful role. Rose is now excited to be able to discover what she wants to do with her life without rules and regulations weighing her down. After a misguided attempt to rescue some malnourished horses, she ends up with community service hours at the animal sanctuary, that just happens to be owned by the sexy half demon, Damian, who she had an exciting evening with a few months ago. They are immediately attracted to each other but must also deal with Damian's hex that prevents him from falling in love.

I thought this book contained a few too many elements. Rose was all over the place with trying to find herself, and what she ended up doing totally baffles me because I thought there was a clear strength in another field. Damian was an interesting character. I loved the grumpy vibe he had going on, and his chemistry with Rose was spicy. He had commitment hang-ups but decent reasons for them. I do wish the hex would have been a little more explored because it felt too vague to really make me concerned. The world itself was fun. I love the magical realm inside a modern day NYC, where supernatural beings and "norms" coexist. I do think reading the glossary at the end would be helpful prior to reading the book.

If you are in the mood for a lighthearted, paranormal read, I would suggest this series. While the first book was stronger for me, I was still entertained by this follow up. I am excited for Olive's book featuring Bax, which was set up well in this book.

Thank you to St. Martin's Press and Netgalley for the e-copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

A continuation of the first novel, This is Rose' story She was due to be the Prima and trained for it her entire life, however it wasn't her fate. Love and finding herself are the central focus of this take. It can be read as a standalone. Once you start, I have to warn you, you'll get sucked in and want to read all of the books in this series. Some of your favorite characters are back as well as new ones.

This was like a cute RomCom version of AHS Coven, and I enjoyed it! I liked the tropes and the set up that was occurring.

Damian and Rose were the perfect opposites attract and their banter was cute.
Def a good palette cleanser for me before I went into my Dark Fantasy ARCs and reads for 2023.

I actually didnt realize there was a book 1, but when I realized it, I was already half way through this book. I may go back and read book 1 and I might even read book 3.
It gave me a lighthearted vibe.

*4.5

I expected the fwb part to start sooner than it did but the book was paced very well. I wish we got a little more depth in Damien's character but I enjoyed what we got. It's a very fun romance.

I received an arc through netgalley.

4+ stars for apparently the only romance books I still enjoy; I can’t wait for this series to continue with the next sister...and then hopefully the best friend at the very least? There is sarcasm, banter, witchy puns, and tons of spice in these books and it’s everything I love. The little element of fantasy/non-reality really helps too.

PS The first book, Not the Witch You Wed, came out last year so feel free to go scoop that one up while you wait for this to come out!

2.5 rounded up to 3 stars. First let me say that I have not read “Not the Witch You Wed”, the first book in April Asher’s series about a magical triad of witchy sisters. This definitely could sway my opinions on Rose’s book. I initially found this story difficult to get into. There was so much happening in this book that I felt like I never had a clear sense of setting. The main location is in modern day New York City, we get the sense that the magical and normal “Norm” world coexist, although there seems to be little Norm interaction. And yet in NYC we have an animal sanctuary run by a grumpy vet that just doesn’t seem to fit—it seemed very barn-like and “country”, not at all like what I imagine a veterinary office in NYC would look like so I couldn’t wrap my head around these places working together. I liked Rose and Damian and their compatibility was believable coupled with heated attraction, but their dialogue sometimes felt jokey at times and not witty like I hoped for in their banter. This was most especially when they seemed to be in a tense situation (ex: with the gryndors—not the time to joke, get out of there!). I feel like I got confused easily in the beginning of the book because it was assumed I would know the paranormal world, and I felt like I needed a guidebook to help me figure out relationships and character purpose. Side note: I did not discover until the end of the book that there is a reading glossary (most likely because I read on an e-reader and only noticed it after the epilogue). So if you are somewhat new to paranormals, READ THIS FIRST! The glossary was funny in its descriptors and would have greatly helped me in the beginning, perhaps changing the tone of the book and explaining the soul hex better. The soul hex itself was confusing to me; you know it’s irreversible, that Damian can never truly fall in love because of it, and that it was put upon him by an ex-girlfriend witch, but how it works is unclear. I did really appreciate the twist with Damian’s ex and found this to work really well with the storyline. Damian and Rose’s relationship also has time to grow and is nurtured through the opportunity of working together at the animal sanctuary; an interesting juxtaposition to them working as bounty hunters. I had considered DNFing just because I couldn’t quite get into the story initially, but am glad I pushed through and finished the book; it got better with story development and clearer character purpose. Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Griffin for this eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Not Your Ex's Hexes is a cute paranormal romance featuring Rose and Damian as the main characters. Rose was the former Prima Apparent, but handed the title to one of her triplet sisters, and Damian is a half-demon veterinarian that is trying to separate himself from his former life as a Hunter. After a steamy, one night stand, Rose and Damian go their own ways until Rose finds herself directly in Damian's path again and sparks flew.

This is the second title in April Asher's Supernatural Singles series, and it is the perfect spooky season romance. While this wasn't a five star read for me, I did enjoy it, and it had some good humor in it, which I enjoyed. I do wish I had read the first book in the series Not the Witch You Wed before I read this one to establish some of the background and world for the characters.

Thank you April Asher, St. Martin's Press, and Netgalley for the gifted eARC.

After having a one-night stand with Damian Adams, a half-demon veterinarian, Rose Maxwell can't get him out of her head. Damian can't stop thinking about Rose either, but neither of them are looking for a relationship. Rose has to complete community service hours at Damian's animal sanctuary, which makes it hard for them to ignore the attraction they have to each other. They come up with a friends-with-benefits arrangement as the solution for their attraction.

The more time they spend together, the harder it is for them to deny their feelings for each other. There's one huge caveat for Damian though. Damian can't fall in love because he's been hexed by his ex. If he falls in love he loses his heart and soul.

Not Your Exes Hexes is book two of the Supernatural Singles series. While I enjoyed the first book, Not the Witch You Wed, I liked this one so much better. The grumpy/sunshine dynamic of Damian and Rose, their flirty banter, and their chemistry (both inside and outside the bedroom) make this book such a fun read. It was great seeing all three Maxwell sisters and some of my favorite characters from the first novel back in this one. The ending sets up perfectly for a third novel for Olivia and Bax. I cannot wait to read their story! There has been vibes building between those two since book one.

Ah, these books are so much fun! I enjoyed number one in the series, and number two is just as good. I'm excited for number three, and I'm hoping Harper gets a book at some stage too.
These books are supernatural romances done right. They've got chemistry, angst, good sex scenes, and family ties. The sanctuary, and hunting parts in the plot were a lot of fun too. It helps that Damian and Rose are easy characters to like. Such an easy read.

I really enjoyed the first book in the Supernatural Singles Series, NOT THE WITCH YOU WED. So I jumped at the opportunity to get an ARC for book 2 of the series, NOT YOUR EX'S HEXES. While book 1 follows Violet's story, book 2 focuses on Rose.
Rose Maxwell has spent her whole life training to be the next Prima (think head witch), but when her sister becomes the Prima Apparent, Rose finds herself at a loss. No job. No man (her ex-fiancé turned out to be a jerk, so she's better off, but none the less, she is alone). An ill-thought-out decision lead to her having to serve community service hours at a local animal shelter. The vet is a grumpy, handsome man that both drives Rose nuts, and makes her swoon.
Overall, this was a fun, enjoyable story and I find that I am really looking forward to book 3, which I hope will tell Olive's story.

Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin’s Griffin for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Not Your Ex's Hexes will be published on February 7, 2023. Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the Advanced Reader's Copy.

I enjoyed this second book in the series following the second of the Maxwell triplets. I liked getting to see the characters from the first book again and even the Mom's character growth which was surprising.

I was really surprised by Rose's decision to steal two malnourished horses without checking to see who owned them. It really threw me for a loop and I just couldn't get that fact out of my head especially when I found at that they were already at an animal shelter getting proper care.

I didn't enjoy the writing style as much as I did the first book probably because I listened to the first one as an audio book but it was still enjoyable and I look forward to the rest of the series.

Not Your Ex’s Hexes is a light hearted, steamy paranormal romance that can be read as a standalone. Since Rose is no longer her grandmother’s heir for Prima witch on the Supernatural Council, she’s a little at wits end, trying new things and seeking new adventures. Rose recruits her sisters and a friend to rescue some mistreated horse not realizing they’ve already been rescued and her target is actually a rescue center. Her punishment is community service at the the rescue center where the head doctor just happens to be the only one night stand Rose ever had. Friends with benefits becomes more complicated when they get feelings, but the sexy vet doesn’t believe he can have a happily ever after with a soul hex hanging over his head. Fun with plenty of action and enough heat to sear the pages, Rose and Damien’s story will leave you longing for more in a sexy, heart melting paranormal HEA. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from NetGalley.
