Rose and Damian were so sweet! I am all about anything that is friends to lovers and grumpy x sunshine. This was an enjoyable read.
I received an e-arc of Not Your Ex's Hexes by April Asher from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Meh, this was ok. It was giving a silly goofy time, a 3-star book. I put this down at 31%.
I enjoyed the first in this series, Not the Witch You Wed, which follows Rose's sister Violet. There's likely going to be a book for their youngest sister Olive, and I might be interested in picking that up because Olive is the funniest Maxwell.
I think if you enjoy other witchy stories like The Ex Hex and The Kiss Curse, this series has similar vibes.
Thank you NetGalley for the arc. I liked this book even more than the first one. Rose and Damien are fire together. Loved the story and the all the characters. I can’t wait to read the next one.
April Asher's second book. It follows Rose Maxwell after her break from being Prima Apparent in the first book. She tries to help rescue an animal and ends up arrested and having to spend community service hours at the animal sanctuary where she has tried to rescue said animals. The vet who runs the joint just so happens to be the half demon she hooked up with at her sisters engagement months earlier. The whole book is Damien trying to fight off his past and Rose trying to figure out her future.
April Asher writes .... silly. That's the best word. There are words like f*ck and jerkface in the same chapter. The storyline is a little predictable and isn't that always the case with romances- which is what makes them great. It's just, for me, the dialogue and the unusual vernacular took me out of the story. However it was spicy and whooooo man it was HOT.
I'm definitely excited for book 3 because I'm assuming that's Olives and Bax's story and I feel like a lot of hate banging is going to happen.
This book. I could not get into. It was boring and it was not keeping my attention. Couldnt finish it
Thank you St. Martin's Griffin and NetGalley for the gifted ebook of Not Your Ex's Hexes! All opinions in this review are my own.
I loved the beginning of this book! The attempted horse rescue and punishment was a hilarious example of forced proximity. I liked the grumpy/sunshine dynamic that Rose and Damian have.
However, this book felt so long. While it is the typical length of a romance book, the middle just seemed to drag on. Luckily, the end was able to redeem it!
I have heard that the first book is really good so I'm not giving up on this series yet!
I have so far enjoyed everything this woman has written, from her April Hunt books to this series.
This was a fun book, an easy read. I love a good plus size heroine. The fact that Rose gets her HEA so close to her disaster of an engagement in the first book was nice. I love the characters and Rose's twist about her new found talent.
After a one night stand neither of them thought they would soon be stuck working together. After rose trys to free horses she does community service for non other than her last one night stand soon they enter into friends with benefit deal
Witches, demons, fwb
Not Your Ex’s Hexes is such a fun, catchy title with a vibrant cover!! Honestly in love with this cover and the attention to details on it. Rose & Damian’s chemistry was perfect and I loved the pacing of this book. Overall, it’s just such a fun book to get through a reading slump.
This was an enjoyable romance that I didn't want to put down. I loved the main characters and the plot.
This was a case of why did I take so long to read this book? I wanted to read the series after a close friend raved about Not The Witch You Wed, so I couldn’t wait to pick this one up. For some reason, it wasn’t working for me when I first tried it, but I’m so glad I came back to it. I devoured both books in a matter of days.
I loved the enemies to lovers story of Rose and Damian. I was excited to see her get her own HEA after book 1. I really enjoyed the grumpy demon, Damian and seeing him in his element at the animal sanctuary. I also loved seeing Rose find her own way after no longer being the Prima apparent. This has plenty of steam and banter! I really hope we will get a third book!
I listened to the audiobook and really enjoyed the narration!
I really enjoyed the first book in this series (Not The Witch You Wed), so I was excited to see that Not Your Ex’s Hexes was available and that it told the story of another of the triplet witch sisters, Rose. This was a fun, mostly light read, a romance with large elements of fantasy/scifi. The “world” of this series is contemporary New York City and environs, but with a difference. In this world, supernatural beings are acknowledged as “supers” and we regular people are called “norms.” It works. The comments about NYC are pretty realistic - the noise and traffic and so on, and yet you have witches and shapeshifters and vampires and demons all over the place. Fun!
The relationship between Rose and Damian is a complex one. Damian is half-demon/half-norm and is fighting to subdue his demon half, only partly because of a hex one of his ex’s put on him when he was a teen. He is now a veterinarian and takes care of mistreated and abandoned animals. He’s the grump of this grumpy/sunshine duo.
Warning: I rounded my star rating down a notch because of the characters’ excessive focus on sex. So if you don’t like a lot of frank/crude discussion and description of said subject, you might want to steer clear of this book. I would suggest you skim those sections but since there’s so much of it, that might be hard to do - which is a shame, because I think the story is a pretty good one.
Near the end of the book, we get hints that there might be a story about Olive, the third witch sister, in the offing, which I would happily read.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Griffin for the opportunity to read an advance readers copy of this book, although I’m a bit late to it. All opinions are my own.
This was a magical read with a few twists. I loved the characters and enjoyed learning more of Damien’s story. It can be read as a stand alone but better if you read the first book in the series.
Many thanks to St. Martin’s Press and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
Meet Rose Maxwell, the former Prima Apparent, who is struggling to find her true calling after renouncing her position as the future Supreme Witch. She has a one night stand with Damian Adams, a half-demon veterinarian, but never expects to see him again. However, fate has other plans as Rose finds herself crossing paths with Damian again while trying to "rescue" horses from his animal sanctuary, leading to mandatory community service.
Rose and Damian have an undeniable attraction from the moment they meet, but they fight against it at every turn, resulting in deliciously angsty scenes. What's more satisfying than a no-strings-attached fling turning into a passionate love story?
If you're looking for a supernatural romance to spice up your spooky season, this book is the perfect fit. With its fun and witty storytelling, this rom-com will have you hooked from the first page. Don't miss out on this thrilling and magical love story.
Not your ex's hexes is a paranormal romance book about Rose, a witch who gets arrested while trying to free abused horses and is sentenced to community work in the place she broke into, which turns out to be an animal sanctuary...
Not only that, but Rose is very annoyed and equal parts attracted to the vet owner of said sanctuary, Damian, a half-demon.
It is a shame that this book did not live to its synopsis, because the world itself has so much potential!
Let's start with the positives:
- this modern-day setting in New York City, with witches, demons, shifters, and angels living in the open, while not a new concept, is pretty good in this book, but I kept wishing that we would learn more about the "Supernatural Council" that is the government for supernatural creatures? Especially since Rose was supposed to be the new ruler for witches and Damian's brother is ruling on it...
- the book is pretty quick to read, and the prose not difficult.
Unfortunately, that's the amount of things I liked...
- While the writing is easy to read, the expressions used sometimes really took me out of the story and made me roll my eyes out... While I don't mind the author taking creative liberties and making up words, in a contemporary setting we still have to adhere to certain rules... I don't remember all of the expressions and words, but if "sucktastic" is a word the author employs, I'm not on board...
- Damian: is he a REAL vet??? because the author does not really show this... or he's one of the worst vets I have seen, because he needed Rose to use her magic to calm down a horse AND figure out what his injury was (infection in its hoof)... WHAT??? you didn't need to drive an hour to find her and get her there for this...???
- The relationship was starting off with a sexual tension, but then quickly changed into a "fuck buddy arrangement", which allowed the author to write a lot of smutty scenes without actually showing the reader the advancement of the relationship itself, or anything else really by the mid-point of this book...
- The sex scenes... while not bad in themselves, when you repeat nearly the same ones three times in a book, it starts to be too repetitive...
- The ending... HUM, how to say this, such a letdown, it felt rushed in the amount of pages, but also a dumb way to resolve things and way too easy...
I am still thinking that I might pick up the next book since it seems that it will be centered on the third sister and an angel, and I want to learn more about them, but I will probably be disappointed again...
4 1/2 stars! The 2nd book in the Supernatural Singles series about the 3 Maxwell sisters we find ourselves following Rose the sister who is a little lost after giving up her previous position and ditching her loser fiancée in the first book. Overall this is a fantastically fun supernatural romance and I would rate it even higher than the last one, a great page turner, can't wait to see what the third one is like!
Rose is a smart get it done kinda person and I loved that although she is trying to figure things out, she is confident in herself and so this book isn't one where she needs to be saved. In fact by the end we see her go in a wildly different direction and that was a great surprise. If you can be surprised by a romance book that is almost always a good thing. On the other hand we meet Damian our sexy/grouchy vet in need who Rose winds up having to help out so of course sparks fly. I do wish we would've seen more of Damian's demon past instead of just being told how awful it was but his side of the story was still quite entertaining. I loved the animal sanctuary setting!
Definitely recommend for anyone who loves happy stories with bits of humor and sexy times. The urban fantasy world Asher has created is fully realized with promising characters and plots that pique your interest and make you smile.
Thanks to St. Martins and Netgalley for access to the ARC copy for an honest review.
There is not much better than a good romance except maybe one involving a witch and Not Your Ex’s Hexes by April Asher was filled with all the witchy goodness I could want. The second book in the Supernatural Singles series, this book was funny, flirty, and oh so good.
Rose is one of the Maxwell triplet witches. She was trained to be the next Prima on the Council until recently when she stepped down. Now trying to find a new life for herself, she runs afoul of Damian Adams, a sexy half-demon veterinarian, when she attempts to steal a horse she thinks is being abused. Her punishment? Community service hours at the aforementioned vet’s animal rescue.
Sparks are flying between these two and they agree to be F-buddies. Yeap, friends-with-benefits, no strings attached and no commitment because the hunky half demon vet has been hexed by his Ex. But, as we all know, the heart wants what the heart wants.
This book has a solid plot with a few twists that keep my interest. So good, it only took me a couple of days to read this one. I loved the banter between the two main characters and Rose’s names for Damian, like Mr. McGrumpy Pants, had me laughing out loud. As an animal lover, the fact that part of the story involved animals was an unforeseen bonus.
The character development was solid and I loved learning more about Rose and getting enough of Damian’s history that I understood his actions and why he was a grumpasaurs. Even the minor characters, such as Damian’s brother Julius, were well thought out and added to the story.
The only negative thing is, I have to wait to read the next book! I hope the author does not make me wait long. This was delicious and I need more soon!
I recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good romance with a bit more edge to it and it works well as a stand-alone. Also a great choice for that summer vacation reading list.
I received a free copy, via Net Galley, in exchange for my honest review.
I was provided an eARC of this book on Net Galley and it has taken me awhile to get my thoughts out on this one! I was obsessed with Not the Witch You Wed, so I had high expectations for this one. This is book 2 and follows the 2nd sister, Rose, and picks up right where book 1 ended. This book expanded upon the magical world with new characters and broader political explanations. LOTS of banter between the two main characters, and you have to love a former “bad boy” who’s finding his way. With some spice, supernatural demon fighting, baby animals, and sibling rivalry, this book was a wild ride. I enjoyed it, but there were some plot points I felt could have been developed further. Either way, I’m already looking forward to book 3! Have you read this series? Let me know what you think!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher, for this free review copy.
I really enjoyed the first book in this series, Not the Witch You Wed, so I was excited to continue the story! It fell a bit flat for me and took me FOREVER to finish.
I felt like it dragged quite a bit, and I couldn’t pay attention enough. I enjoyed the characters, especially Damian. He is grumpy but loving, and has a heart of gold. I loved learning more about the sisters, and what they were up to. I always love a book with witchy vibes!
Overall 3 stars, but not one I would highly recommend. Thanks again to NetGalley and the publisher. Out now!
So I may have started The Supernatural Singles series out of order...but I'm so glad I started it! I do love it when you can pick up on this book two and not be lost. The was a fantastic supernatural romance! It's full of magic, wit, humor, some tension,& of course romance.
The banter between Rose and Damian was so fun and well done.
If you're a supernatural romance fan your definitely going to want to check this one out! I'm looking forward to continuing this series and I need to go back to book one for some more reading fun.
