I almost always dislike book 2 in a series. Its always so slow and has to include the backstory. It's like extra reading. But this was done perfectly. It was well written and the new characters were fun and exciting. I really enjoyed this one maybe even more the first it the series.

I was thrown right into the book and I couldn't put it down, I read it all in one sitting which is great for the book but not so great for me. But the book was so worth being tired the next day.
I really love this author's writing it's wonderful.

AS CAWPILE:
Characters: 7 | Atmosphere: 4 | Writing: 5 | Plot: 5 | Intrigue: 4 | Logic: 8 | Enjoyment: 4
Total: 5.29

I had pretty low expectations of this one, and it met that. The first book, realistically, did not need a sequel. I felt the ending, while open-ended, was still beautiful and perfect. Yet, a sequel we received. This story wasn't as nearly as interesting, nor as high stakes. I found that I simply did not care what was going on, and the romance fell flat for me. This was a bit of a bummer, considering how much I enjoyed the first book in comparison.

Immortality A Love Story has left me speechless. I’m trying to collect my words but I can’t say anything besides the fact that I am elated about Hazel and Jack getting their happy ending. Anatomy left a small hole in my heart after Jack’s death, but was easily repaired while reading immortality. I must admit that as soon as I started the book I kept hoping Jack would show up. I would have loved having him show up in the middle of the story and not towards the end, but I think it worked perfectly this way. I enjoyed the concept of the Companions to the Death. Schwartz made an amazing job in making you believe they were a great society, but still keeping a conspicuous air so the plot twist wouldn’t feel inadequate. I loved Simon and just like Hazel I felt like I was betraying Jack during the first few chapters. I’m glad he didn’t resent Hazel for turning down his offer, but it was the best decision she could’ve taken. And I absolutely adored Eliza and Charlotte. When Eliza was first introduced I knew I would love her character, and to see her and princess Charlotte fighting for her love and getting her happy ending was truly delightful. I was a little disappointed with Hazel’s inability to find a cure to the Tincture. I felt like it was extremely important and necessary for Jack to grow old, especially with Hazel. I would’ve loved to read about Hazel finding a cure in the future for them to grow old together. However, I still loved the conclusion to this book. I loved what Hazel represented for women who would become surgeons in the future. She was the spark that ignited that change. Hazel and Jack’s story is one I know I will remember for the rest of my life.

Immortality: A Love Story is the follow up to Anatomy: A Love Story. In this sequel we meet back up with Hazel where she is arrested, but is saved by a mysterious message. Its great to revisit these characters, especially since I feel like I was left hanging at the end of the first installment. Great read!

Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this in advance; I was so excited to see this pop up on my Kindle! I listened to Anatomy, the first book, back in October and LOVED it, so I was thrilled to finally get an addition to the story! I devoured this book in about two hours- I think the plot was excellent and moved at a great pace, the banter between characters was really fun to read, and the ending of the story couldn't have been any better. I absolutely loved the first book but I may have even liked this better than the first one! I highly recommend Dana Schwartz's writing, and if you haven't read Anatomy, definitely do so before starting Immortality. I would love to see another book from her with these same characters, but if this is the end, then I am happy all the same:)

This series is especially perfect for anyone who has an interest in the medical field; its such a cute little story and I love the historical element in regard to medicine. This title is released in February of 2023 and I look forward to purchasing a physical copy for my shelf!

After the ending of Anatomy I was absolutely on dire need of the sequel— especially because until months ago I thought it was a standalone! The story picks up shortly after the events of Anatomy and follows Hazel as she continues on with her medical practice after the death (?) of her love and co-conspirator Jack. As a young woman in Edinburgh in the early nineteenth century— practicing medicine is something she needs to do on the down low, treating patients who either aren’t bothered by her gender or come from family circumstances that require a certain discretion in their medical practitioner. When one of her patients accuses her of a crime she didn’t commit, Hazel is placed on death row. But at the final hour, Hazel finds herself whisked away to London to treat the mysteriously ill Princess Charlotte, saving her life and pointing her future in a new direction.

Although a lot of this book I didn’t find necessary to the plot and character development, Dana Schwartz’ writing is so compulsively readable that I easily could have read another 400 pages of Hazel’s daily life. I’m not sure if it’s the way she writes her characters or the particular mix of humour and history in the setting that just does it for me, but I truly love her writing style. I really enjoyed the elements that harkened back to the previous book’s plot centring doctor Beecham, and while certain elements were definitely far fetched/ a little abrupt, I found the plot as a whole to be both entertaining and strong enough to hold my attention throughout.

I do wish the romantic side of it to be a tad more developed. I don’t want to get into any spoilers, but while I was happier with the ending there definitely was a lot of chemistry and potential with Hazel and a certain handsome swede doctor. Perhaps that was the point, though. Hazel’s choice reflected her own agency and love and I can’t help but root for that.

Overall, this duology is perfect for fans of VE Schwab, Stalking Jack the Ripper and gothic stories with a strong feminist lean. I really enjoyed both novels and thought they were the perfect easy reads for a winter’s night.

4/5 stars

Spoilers for Anatomy!

I absolutely adored Anatomy and unsurprisingly, Immortality has clawed its way into my heart. Immortality picks up right where Anatomy left off and Hazel is mourning the loss of her first love, Jack. Hazel is throwing herself into her work and achieving her lifelong dream of becoming an accomplished surgeon. She has made a name for herself and news travels fast. Hazel soon finds herself in a tangle of a secret society and politics, as well as a new romantic entanglement.

I was very pleased with the ending of Immortality and got the closure I so desperately needed. If you enjoy reading Gothic Romances, then Anatomy and Immortality are for you!

I really enjoyed the first books in this series, so I was excited to check this one out!

However, I didn’t enjoy the sequel as much as the first book, “Anatomy: a love story”.

This book picks up where the previous one left off, Jack has been hanged and Dr. Beecham has gotten away with murder. With her heart broken, she devotes herself to writing a medical textbook which will be accessible to all. She is then falsely accused of being an abortionist, a crime punishable by death in her time.

This story gets out to a great start, but I felt that it dragged in the middle. For that, I’m deduction a star.

Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martins Press for providing me with an eARC of this book to read and review.

After losing the love of her life to lies and politics, Hazel dives deep into her work-her absurd, odd work as a female surgeon. After all she’s done for the people of her community, she hasn’t gotten any further in acceptance in the medical community-until a few wild twists take her to the Royal family. “A” love story is understating it-the amount of love in this book is beautiful and scary. Being close to the royal family brings political expectations-including some you wouldn’t think of in a thousand years!

*Spoilers Ahead*
I absolutely love this book. When Jack showed up out of nowhere in the most unexpected place it was fantastic! Up until that point I was still unsure of his status of life and death! After Hazel almost lost her own life it was too perfect to have him show up.

The appearance of Marie-Anne and her comrades was a fun twist-until
It wasn’t! Byron made himself out to be the bad guy, but that was a fantastic red herring and shows not to expect too much of the obvious.

I will say that as soon as Hazel finally went to collect her inheritance from Beecham, I knew he was going to be the lawyer, but what else would have been a better way to bring him back into the folds? I really hope this isn’t the last of this series and we get to follow Hazel and Jack in New York or another city-perhaps 200 years later? Thanks for another great read!

Thank you Dana Schwartz, Net Galley and St. Martins Press for the ability to read and review this book!

I loved this conclusion to the story that started in "Anatomy." My only complaint is that this was the last one we get with these characters!

There aren't enough stars to give Dana Schwartz! I had previously read Anatomy, A Love Story and was so excited about this book. Let me tell everybody it didn't disappoint. Any questions you may have from Anatomy will most likely be answered.

I became engrossed from the very beginning. This well written page-turner had me reading nonstop. I love Hazel and the amazing surgeon she is. The world build this author weaves helped me enjoy the book almost as an experience since in my mind I was inside the book, with Hazel, and all the vivid characters she encountered. I felt my heartstrings pull when she was imprisoned but also when she was rescued to be Princess Charlotte's personal physician.

I highly recommend this book to all It is a great read with an amazing storyline. I hope this author continues to give us more of this series.

Immortality: A Love Story by Dana Schwartz is the sequel I've been waiting for!
And she is here stunnig as ever! I wouldn't have expected anything less! After devouring Anatomy!

Dana Schwartz is a phenomenal storyteller, the ability to weave a beautiful story such as this it's truly remarkable!
A captivating historical, gothic tale with mystery, romance and a strong female protagonist!
The atmosphere of this book is done extremely well. It was as if I was walking among these characters.
My gosh and the writing!!! Hot damn.... Dana Schwartz writing is beautiful, descriptive, and captivating.
I don't know how she can top her next book! Because her first two are just wild and intensely-gripping.
I had the absolute best time devouring Immortality!
The beautiful cover is absolutely gorgeous and I can't wait for this be out in the world!

Wow! Wow wow wow WOW!

I absolutely loved this sequel to Anatomy. Immortality follows Hazel Sinnett, the scandalous female surgeon who brought shame to her family by breaking off her engagement and practicing medicine. Now she lives alone at Hawthorne Castle, treating patients and working on publishing her own research. Everything Hazel wants is impossible for a woman in Edinburgh 1818.

But when one life saved turns into a wrongful accusation of murder, she is thrown in jail, pending her hanging. She is rescued by The Royal Palace, requesting that she be the personal physician for the country’s beloved Princess Charlotte in exchange for her freedom. She arrives to London, where she embarks on a journey of secret societies, grief, and love.

Immortality is a spectacular sequel to Anatomy. The book weaves incredible themes of womanhood, independence, social progress, and ‘the greater good.’ And of course, a love story. Dana Schwartz does an amazing job of making the story feel whole with her pacing. She gives us an entirely new story while also wrapping up all the questions we were left with from Anatomy. I absolutely loved the way she included historical figures in this novel and the secret society she created in this world.

I fell in love with new characters, gasped with all her twists and turns, and every question from Anatomy was answered for me (plus all the new ones from this book). I have to say this will be one of my most anticipated releases- I can’t wait to talk about this book with others!

I have to mention the beautiful way Schwartz talks about a woman’s love for her career and independence, while also feeling pangs of solitude for a world that finds her intimidating and isn’t ready for her fierceness. I see this theme play out in today’s world with all the powerful and trailblazing women I see- and have felt that myself. I simply cannot recommend this book enough!

You must read this sequel. Her storytelling is impeccable.

First off, thank you for meeting cover expectations with this equally gorgeous cover from Anatomy!

Now, the review: I adored Anatomy. I felt the plot moved quickly and had a clear story arc whereas Immortality felt a bit less defined. I still enjoyed the story, but there didn't seem to be a specific story arc to follow in this book. Instead, this novel felt like a middle ground, a continuation of the hooked ending of Anatomy (which caused me SEVERE heartache), and almost a placeholder for the next challenge Hazel Sinnett must undertake. That being said, I still loved it. The pacing was well done and the tension between Hazel and Simon was beautifully crafted. It is so hard for me to not fall in love with a man who appreciates a woman's mind in literature.

We finally get answers about Jack, and thank-god we do because I am still not over Anatomy's ending. I will say, I do have a LOT of questions with the ending of Immortality, so Dana Schwartz, I am politely asking for you to please give us one more to tie up some of those loose ends.

As a side note, I was curious about Hazel's mother and brother. It would seem that her mother would want the access to the royal family and would almost seem a smidge proud of her daughter for finding herself residing and treating near the beloved Princess; but we don't really hear anything about them during the meat and potatoes of the story. I'm curious to know what Hazel's mother was doing/saying in regards to her position.

Things I loved: Princess Charlotte's real reason for illness, the King's Doctor Simon (swooned a little too hard for him, I almost picked him over Jack!), the Companions of Death, I definitely want some more of this.

ANATOMY was my fave book of the year so you know I squealed when the sequel arrived. From my review earlier this year: Although this may not have been the romance story that its tagline suggests, it’s definitely a love story. A love story of: finding what you love to do, the love for others, the love for science and discovery, and of course, some romantic love as well.

IMMORTALITY, did not disappoint. The sequel has more romantic love, with the other kinds sprinkled in too. We follow Hazel’s journey from Edinburgh to England and I’m grateful we get to read how Hazel’s journey ends, her brilliance and caring nature make it impossible not to root for her happy ending. Hazel genuinely wants to help people. The multiple love stories didn’t hurt either. With a mix of historical fiction and magical realism, this was a great end to a fantastic duology.

*4.5 STARS*

I would say this is a pretty lovely great close to the duology. Just like Anatomy, this book was the perfect amount of mystery, gore, and romance stitched together (pun intended) that made it a very enjoyable adventure. The author's bending of history/historical figures made it fun and I especially adored her addition of Princess Charlotte of Wales. I don't want to give any spoilers, but her ending was much lovelier than in real life and I appreciate who her romantic partner was.

As sad as it made me, I loved that whether Jack died or not is a mystery for a good deal of the book (you'll have to read it to find out), especially since you assume that he lives at the end of book one after writing Hazel a letter. Well, Dana Schwartz will flip that all on its head, because did Jack actually write that letter? I was surprised at first that the author decided to do that, but it really made Hazel's journey and grief that much more unique and engaging. It also welcomes the possibility for new relationships in Hazel's life.

I loved Hazel and Eliza's easy camaraderie. They were such fast friends and a happy dose of female friendship. I also adored Simon. He was so sassy, yet classy, and the biggest cinnamon roll. I would marry that man in a heartbeat. I really enjoyed that the author did not make him overbearing or aggressively manly. He was intelligent and caring and didn't feel threatened by Hazel being a female physician. I loved him and Hazel together so much I was torn between wanting them to be together and feeling guilty I wanted them to be together because I was holding out hope for Jack! Honestly, best part of the book for me! I also have to give a shout out to the Companions of Death - such a cool addition for a historical fiction junkie like me! I wish I could say more about them, but wanted to leave a spoiler free review as always!

I didn't get the full 5 stars for me for the same reason I gave in my review of Anatomy. I didn't feel like Hazel felt the consequences of a lot of her actions of being a well-known and unmarried woman of the ton (wandering around by herself, being with men without a chaperone, etc.) It was just so unheard of regarding a lady of her class. She faces more consequences in this book, but for smaller parts of the story that historical reality falls at the wayside. However, it's not enough to take you out the story and I appreciate that Schwartz did put more stress on Hazel "acting correctly" in society this go around.

Overall, fantastic YA read and cannot wait to buy the hardback to join Anatomy on my shelves! Thank you Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for providing an early copy in exchange for an honest review!

Ahhhh I wanted to love this one so badly because I LOVED Anatomy! And I did enjoy this book for the most part..
I do think this book is a bit slower paced than the first book, and less of the gruesome and gothic vibes. But that was okay with me, I was still excited to see what would happen to Hazel! and I had to know if Jack came back?!?!?

However...

CW: it mentions two girls making out and both are naked from the waist up. That alone, and the fact that it becomes a bigger part of the story, is NOT my thing. More on that below in the spoiler section.
One steamy-ish fade-to-black scene between a man and woman

SPOILERS ahead!!

There's suddenly a lesbian relationship thrown into the story out of no where.. and I just feel like it was done more for the sake of being 'woke'. And then I felt like there was suddenly so much focus on that side plot, than on Hazel and her own future/story..

I WANTED MORE OF HER AND JACK!!

Yes Jack is alive and I love him and Hazel together sooo much and I'm so so so happy that the author gave us an HEA for them😭❤️❤️ their parts together were my favvvvv!! We needed more of them!!! I would have loved to see him show up earlier and/or have them working together more, but what we did get of them was so so sweet and I loved that.

So.. in a nutshell, I enjoyed it.. but I feel like the Charlotte/Eliza thing was out of left field and unnecessary to the story, could have just focused more on the secret society and immortality and Jack and her, but that's just me! This is supposedly YA but I would not be giving it to my kids!

HOLY COW! I have been invested in this story since book one and I'm so glad I got to read this. The sequel was just as amazing as the first. There is so much love I have for Hazel as she tries to navigate her life without Jack. I feel for her as she tries to deep dive into her work so as to not think of the pain she has endured. I also love that she wants to be independent. This has to be one of my favorite sequels to date. I cannot wait for others to read this when it comes out!
A big thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book
