Enjoyed it but not quite as much as the previous? It still very much felt like it was placed into a victorian setting without the wording or mannerism of the time. I had fun but may have to come back in the future to try it again, perhaps after rereading the first book.
I read the first book, Anatomy, last year and I absolutely freaking loved it; I couldn’t put it down. So I was very happy when I got approved to read an ARC of this.
Hazel is hands down one of the most consistent characters I’ve ever read. She’s passionate about what she does and isn’t afraid to speak her mind. And she remains this way for the entire duology. And I will say this definitely had a different tone than the last book; think less gory and more scientific, but it was still enjoyable either way.
I don’t have much else to say, but this was just as good as the first book and this is something I’ll reread again in the future.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
I don't know what I was expecting going into this but it definitely wasn't a woman trying to become a doctor in an age where that was not allowed. I was unaware that this was a second book when I requested the ARC but I was glad to finally get the first book off of my TBR! My biggest complaint about this book is the love triangle, but also that I didn't like either men? One of them seemed like he wanted nothing to do with her, and the other just seemed Too Perfect. He was very quick to be like "Yup! We can do whatever you want!" and I like a little more angst in my romances. Overall this book was just ok for me, not sure if it was the writting, the historical setting, or the fact that the main character continuously got everything she wanted without much struggle. I know this author has written a few other books including a YA contemporary and a memoir and I'd definitely check them out to see if I like them more!
I really loved Anatomy and I was so excited to get my hands on Immortality. It was great being back with Hazel in this gothic historical fiction. Immortality is a very character focused story, and I personally wished there would have been more to the plot because the story progressed very slowly and not much happened in the book plot wise. It definitely left me wondering if there’s going to be a third book because I can see the story continuing.
This book was a disappointment after how much I enjoyed the first book in the series. The reason I loved the first book so much was that Hazel was such a spunky and determined character and while there was a love story between her and Jack the real love story was between her and her love of anatomy and science. The Hazel in this book didn't feel like the same character and none of new characters felt fleshed out enough. Add to that the lackluster love triangle and historical inaccuracies and it really felt like this sequel was not needed.

I wanted to love Anatomy, but wasn't thrilled with the story line, so I've been hesitant to read Immortality. I was pleasantly surprised though and enjoyed this book a lot more than the first story.

My thoughts: I’m glad I immediately picked this one up after reading Anatomy because I was so engrossed in the timeframe and the cliffhanger had me hanging.
I did a mix of audio and e-reading this one. The narrator did such a great job of bringing the characters to life and telling the story! I also thought having a separate narrator tell the news stories a fun addition.
I really loved how Hazel fought to defy the odds placed against her in becoming a female surgeon. It was enjoyable to see people come to respect and trust her opinions.
I really liked the way the ending played out, and without giving too much away I believe I love beyond life!
Read if you love:
* Strong female characters
* Overcoming odds
* Falling in love
* Love triangle
* Royalty and expectations
Thank you to Wednesday and Macmillan Audio for copies of this book, available now!
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for this ARC of Immortality! I really enjoyed Anatomy as it was a decent read for me and I was interested in Immortality and to see how it would follow up. I think the highlight for me, and really the most memorable part was the romance between Hazel and Jack because the secret society plot was just there, personally, but overall, I think I felt the same as reading Anatomy.
Anatomy: A Love Story was a favorite read of mine last year, but I was anxious to pick up this sequel once I learned that book one’s ending was, in fact, not the ending at all. While this installment takes a somewhat different route plot wise, I still enjoyed reading it and being immersed in this familiar world once again. This book isn’t as gory as book one, which was a real shame, but I understand why the author chose to go the route that she did. There is a love triangle introduced here, and that made my heart anxious because of my love of Jack in the first book, but I think it was well done and felt content with how things wrapped up in the end. If you enjoyed part one of the Anatomy duology, I think it’s worth the read to continue on with book 2.
The had potential, we had (false murder charges that left Hazel in a state you would think would break her in some way. Some trauma but wasn’t played on much. A kind of secret society, I felt like it was a bit out there not very secret if you ask me. I just felt like this could have been better though I did enjoy it, the romance between Hazel and Jack was giving soulmate!
All Hazel Sinnett wants is to be a female surgeon even if the world is against her. After the dramatic ending of Anatomy: A Love Story, Hazel is trying to get her life back on track. She is pursuing her dream (on the down low) and trying to recover from a broken heart. When she suddenly finds herself treating a Princess.. she is unsure what is to come next.
I really enjoyed this book. I absolutely love Hazel. I think she is the perfect example of a strong female character that shows her strength through intelligence and quick wit. It was a perfect blend of historical fiction mixed with magical realism. It was faced paced and exciting. It was gruesome but in the best way. Overall, would definitely recommend!
I loved this book. I read it all in one sitting, exactly like the first book. I loved the historical setting and that Princess Charlotte was featured. Bridgerton fans, if you want a different take on Princess Charlotte, definitely give this series a try!
I loved the marriage of science and alchemy in this story and was so glad to see that it stayed true to the first book. Mostly science but a touch of magic. I also loved the historical figures featured in the story.
I am a huge Dana Schwartz fan and will most definitely continue to read her books.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Immortality is the final installment in the Anatomy Duology. Another beautiful book cover. Just absolutely stunning!
We reunite with Hazel Sinnett again in Immortality, where she is arrested and then saved by a peculiar request, to be the personal physician of Princess Charlotte. She still cannot believe what has happened in the past year with the immortality, Dr. Beecham, and her love, Jack. Is Jack dead or alive? What is actually going on with Hawthornden Castle and the Companions to the Death?!
While I will say, I did enjoy Anatomy a bit more, this is a perfect end to the duology. There were a lot of subplots going on, and a few events surprised me in a very good way. I enjoyed reading and being on Hazel’s adventure. Can’t wait to see what Dana Schwartz does next!
It was ok.... but not as good as the first book.
I was very excited to come back to this world and to see what Hazel and Jack are up to and what will happen next. This book picks up a couple weeks after the end of the last book, and we're following Hazel as she visits her patients & deals with what happens at the end of book 1.
I was sincerely enjoying the first 30% of this novel and could not put the book down, but after that the pacing slowed down and it almost felt like a completely different story to me. New characters were introduced and I unfortunately wasn't a huge fan of most of them. We also were introduced to a new romantic lead, meaning that this book had a love triangle...
The last 70% of this book was very predictable and honestly felt a bit unnecessary. It felt like Hazel was taking a step back in character development rather than forward. And I did not enjoy the ending, it felt like the author didn't tie up enough of the loose ends and plans to write another book in this world to update us on the characters in the future.
Overall, disappointing ending to this duology. If I knew how it was going to end I probably wouldn't have started book one.
Immortality: A Love Story is the perfect follow up to Dana Schwartz's debut, Anatomy: A Love Story. With the same tone -- it's eerie, creepy, and a little bit gory -- it infuses even more romance to give the story even more warmth and good feelings than the first iteration. A really great, fun read in a unique setting.
Hazel, still practicing medicine at her home, becomes embroiled in a legal mess that lands her in jail - potentially awaiting the hangman's noose. That is, until she is saved by an unlikely source - The Royal Family. Hazel is sent to be the personal physician of the ailing Princess Charlotte of Wales who has been suffering from an unknown illness for some time.
I found this to be a well rounded ending to the duology. A little unbelievable at times - but what series about immortality wouldn't be?
Yet another spectacular read from Schwartz. Loved everything from the characters to the plot to the twists and turns.
I was so excited for Dana Schwart's sequel in The Anatomy Duology and this didn't disappoint. I was eager to find out if Jack survived that cliffhanger!! This story introduced my new favorite characters of a pampered, dramatic princess and a sweet Swedish doctor. Hazel has risen in popularity and now is a physician to the royal family. Add in a devious secret society, everlasting list, and love = a recipe for
for Gothic Fantasy perfection!
3.5 stars ☆ I was excited to read this book after finishing anatomy. I'm still in awe of how beautiful the cover is. stunning.
The ending from the last book really made me pick this book up cause it made me feel like I need answers from it. Now, this book isn't the same feeling as what I felt from reading anatomy. I had high hopes for it, especially from the beginning but as I read through, it started to get messy and predictable. I still enjoyed reading it, I was just disappointed.
Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher for the arc !!!
