I have read and enjoyed several of Alex Finlay’s books and am a big fan. Unfortunately, this one was just OK for me.
The premise of the book was interesting - several kids from a foster home grow up and become all kinds of different things - all pretty successful, except for the ones who disappeared.
The beginning of the story was REALLY intriguing, and I could not wait to see what the heck was going on. It just went in a strange direction and never really righted itself. It could have went so many other ways and could have been such a fantastic story. I guess I was just disappointed.
There were a couple surprises along the way, but the story just went kind of flat for me. So many untold stories behind the plot just really made me want a different book about the same people.
It was interesting. It’s just not the story I wanted.

At first this book had me hooked but after a while the story felt dry and drab. If you are not the type of person that reads a lot of thrillers then it might be a good pick for you, but if you are an avid thriller reader you have probably read something like this before.

I hadn't read an Alex Finlay book before this, but I have seen them highly praised - so I was excited to be approved for this ARC. I was expecting more plot twists and more build up/mystery. Instead, this book was pretty straightforward. With the “whodunnit” and the "why'd they do it” given away relatively early on, I was wondering what was left for me to discover or figure out?
However - this is a very readable, fast-paced, action-packed novel, however, it was missing the tension that I was expecting. The premise is interesting, but I definitely had to suspend my disbelief to feel like I could enjoy it. Big action, small character development.

I know this book has a lot of mixed reviews, but I really enjoyed it! I loved the premise and read this one pretty quickly. It was fast paced and kept me intrigued. You do have to suspend your belief a bit for this one, but that didn’t bother me.

After reading some of the other reviews, I feel I most enjoyed this book. I found the characters to be different in each of their ways but distinctively unique and intriguing. I found the action in this story exciting, but the past flashbacks were heartbreaking at times. It kept me interested and on the edge of my seat. I enjoyed the character Jenna and her backbone to protect her family and solve the mystery of who is hunting them down.

3.5 stars
Thank you to Net Galley, St. Martin's Press and Minotaur Books for an ARC copy of this book
What have we done is a multiple POV thriller revolving around a group of children who endured a challenging childhood being raised in a children's home named Savior House. Several children disappeared from the house and eventually Savior House was closed down.
25 years later members of the group are being hunted and exterminated. What secrets from the past justifies killing everyone from Savior House?
The group cross paths as they search for answers and try to escape the monster hunting them, determined to silence them forever.
Alex Finlay produces great character building and mystery to this thriller. With some twists and turns, it will keep you guessing who will survive until the end.

I loved all the twists and turns this book had. I never figured out who was after them or why. As the book neared the end the tension and suspense ramped up and I was on the edge of my seat. I loved that we got the three different POVs from the three main characters, I absolutely love stories with alternating POVs! This was a solid thriller and kept me hooked the entire book!

This book is extremely faced-paced which I love; right from the beginning there's a lot going on. I'm also a fan of multiple POVS because I feel like we are able to get full view of the plot. The short chapters really get my attention and suspence HIGH. Would recommend if you want a quick read, face paced thriller.

This book was full of suspense as one character after another is targeted to die. The connection to the characters is explained in the first quarter of the book, but I don’t want to ruin that here. As each person lives their life and tries to outrun those trying to kill them, the suspense builds. I especially enjoyed the chapters that featured Jenna. She was a strong female character. I enjoyed the overall book, but I felt like the ending didn’t live up to the suspense and build from the rest of the book. Had the ending been better, I would have increased my rating to four stars.
Thank you so much to Net Galley for a gifted e-copy of this book!

Having enjoyed this authors other books, I was excited to read this one. Unfortunately, this was nothing like the others and was not a great read for me. My main complaint is the lack of character development. As a reader, we weren't given enough backstory and development of the characters when they were young to care and distinguish them as adults.

What Have We Done" Started off so strong for me. I found the characters interesting. The situations they were being thrown in suspenseful. I even thought the premise felt original and promising. However, by half way though, the story started to feel a little dry and very predictable.
I felt the main characters come together much to late into the story, I didn't get enough of the whole group dynamic playing out. The main twist I felt was obvious a mile away, and the one twist that could, and in my opinion, should have been kept hidden for longer was exposed pretty quickly. All in all the novel was still enjoyable, it just fell a little flat. Almost like we were reading a first draft of a great novel that wasn't fully fleshed out.
In the end I would describe this as the perfect airport thriller. A quick enjoyable read that you don't have to focus to hard on what is happening.

Three individuals’ lives are threatened after the death of another. Twenty-five years ago Jenna, Donnie, Nico, Ben and Artemis lived at Savior House, a dysfunctional group foster home, Savior House. They are now adults who have not kept in touch, but the death of Ben brings them back together. Shortly after Ben dies, the other three have near death experiences due to attempted homicides. The remaining reunite to figure out why they are being targeted and by whom. This book was refreshing since it differed from the other psychological thrillers I have ready, but it fell a little short. It wasn’t an action packed book and parts of the book were repetitive or dry. It was a quick and easy to follow read though.

I think the biggest drawback for me is the orphan turn assassin turn yoga stepmom. It was kinda cartoony for me. I love assassins in political thrillers, you know, spy stuff. In this case, why are there so many assassins?
The book overall is entertaining. It's fast paced and kept me interested throughout. That's about as good as it gets though. The characters aren't well developed and when I got to the end and saw how it all fit together I thought "Is that really it?" Although the cat-and-mouse excitement in the present day was gripping, I just didn't feel like I got enough from the past to appreciate the motive of the bad guy(s) or even to understand the motivations of the characters.

What Have We Done is both an edge-of-your-seat thriller and a gut-wrenching coming-of-age story. And it cements Alex Finlay as one of the new leading voices in thrillers today.
Review:
This book is a case of interesting premise, poor execution. I DNF’d pretty early on. I had heard about Alex Finlay’s other books being amazing, but unfortunately this was not one of them. This feels like a second draft. The characters were not multidimensional, the pacing was off and I didn’t feel connected to the story. Maybe if I reread it, I’ll have another opinion. As for now, 2/5.

What can I say Alex has done it again with another great read. So glad thst I found this author. Can’t wait for another from him

This read was devastating for me, not because the book was sad, but because I unfortunately didn't enjoy it.
I'll start by saying Alex Finlay is one of my favorite authors and I will literally read anything that he puts out. But compared to his other thrillers, both of which I gave 5 stars, this one didn't hit the mark for me.
What Have We Done follows a group of foster siblings and the mystery that brings them all back together. My main issue with the book was the plot. It felt like it was all over the place and didn't make a lot of sense to me. There were side characters who felt like they were shoehorned in and no real "mystery" that we were trying to solve.
While I didn't enjoy What Have We Done I will still read each and every one of Alex Finlay's books and I highly recommend both The Night Shift and Every Last Fear.

I loved Alex Finlay’s first two thrillers, Every Last Fear and The Night Shift, but What Have We Done was less to my taste.
I enjoyed parts of it, and it’s not a bad book, it just wasn’t for me. I originally DNFed it back in February, and went back to it this week to read the entire book.
What Have We Done is an action-heavy book centred around a former hitwoman, Jenna, and several of her friends from a group home where they lived as teenagers. Jenna is forced back into her old life when her husband and children are threatened, and she's told to assassinate an old friend.
Because the emphasis is more on the action and less on the characters and mystery, the characters fell a bit flat for me. It was fun uncovering their previous lives and secrets at the group home, and I particularly liked Donny, the rock star, but the mystery didn’t have as much emotional impact as I liked.
The scenes with twin sorority-girl type hitwomen were over-the-top but I wound up really enjoying them. Once I leaned into the silliness, I liked the book more, and I’m glad I gave it another try.
Thank you to Netgalley and Minotaur Books for my review copy of this book.

3.5 stars. Unique story but the characters didn’t feel all that believable. I would have preferred fewer characters or fewer action/chase scenes and a little more character development to be able to relate to and root for someone to win. Definitely a fun thriller read though - I sped through it!

DNF at 30%. I think this is a case of right book, wrong time. I had trouble following plot and characters.

Alex Finlay writes thrillers that keep you guessing and this is no exception. What Have We Done is fast paced and full of action, but I was disappointed with the ending.
