Found this to be very average for the most part but the twists were actually really good. I just wish I connected with the characters more. A few plot holes but overall a good thriller. Would recommend for beginners of the genre.
Well written, but a bit too action movie like for my taste. I was hooked from the beginning and the mystery kept me on my toes, but my interest did not hold.
I am a huge fan of dual timelines + past and present mysteries that come back to haunt our characters. The premise of this book had me hooked and while I had fun reading it was a little over the top for my personal taste. I never felt a true connection to any of the characters and while I could get lost in story I wasn't wholly invested in what happened to them.
I find there's been a recent surge of 'off the rails' books that combine high-octane action, over the top characters and circumstances and a lot of fast-paced action. While I can sometimes lose myself in the books it's not my go-to genre and not what I was expecting. I think it's a solid, bingeable book. Suspend some disbelief and hunker down for the ride. This book had a cinematic feel to it.
I was curious how the past was going to get wrapped up and while I enjoyed multiple POVs in the present I do wish our characters "reunited" sooner in the present day to find out who was coming for them.
I was such a massive fan of Every Last Fear and will continue to keep an eye out for what Alex Finlay writes next.
Thank you to NetGalley and Minotaur for the ARC.
I could not finish enough of this book to be able to leave a comprehensive review, but I hope it finds its audience and I am grateful to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an advance copy.
4.5 stars
I was confused at first with the multiple people and bouncing around, I was struggling to keep the names straight. Once I got it straight in my head, this was a fantastic book. The feels like one of the better Alex Finlay books. I definitely recommend. Nothing adds up until you get to the end and the epilogue twist, perfection!!
An action packed thriller, the twists and turns were pleasing!
The pace did drag in some parts, and the main characters were not likable in my opinion. The story line, however, was interesting.
What an excellent read! I enjoyed every moment of this fast-paced thriller. Tons of twists and turns that kept me glued to every page. Can't wait to read Alex Finlay's other books.
I loved this book! It was fast pace, suspenseful, and I had no idea where it was going. That is my favorite kind of book. Made for the perfect train commute getting time to read this. Big fan of all of Alex Finlay's books and he has yet to disappoint me!
I have read or listened to every Alex Finlay book so far. His debut book "Every Last Fear. Is a must read as it was amazing. With that being said, I highly recommend What Have We Done.
In normal Alex Finlay fashion, What Have We Done leads with gruesome murder and then takes you through the events that led up to it and after it. Alex Finlay takes you through the past and present of the individual(s) involved.
At first it was a bit hard to follow all the different characters' perspectives because it was not very clear as to how all of the characters were connected but once you are about 1/4 of the way in, it becomes a lot clearer. When that happens, it makes it much easier to get into the book.
I enjoyed most of the characters in the book but there was in particular that I really struggled with until the very end. It was also this characters supporting characters that I struggled with. I'm not sure if it is because of the individual's lifestyle and career choice or if it was the narrator for me.
The female assassin is one of my favorite characters. You can truly understand where she is coming from and why she is making the choices that she is. You can really feel the strong sense of family bond both marital and friend family throughout the book.
The story itself is written well. It has a lot of twists and turns. The story around Savior House is one of my favorites, which is really the center of the entire book in my opinion.
Trigger warnings: orphanage, sexual predator, child murder
Rating: 4 out of 5 because I struggled with the connection between all of the characters at first. Also, because I struggled with one of the characters until near the end. This is a definite recommendation though for me because if you like a good mystery thriller then this is a book that will keep you guessing and going "what?!" until the very end.
Thank you #NetGalley and Minotaur Books for this this arc of #WhatHaveWeDone in exchange for an honest review.
Thoughts:
I recently read The Night Shift by this author and really enjoyed it. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on his latest and greatest. Ended up feeling disappointed with not loving it.
Overall, it was well organized. I guessed who to expect to be the “bad” person in the book. That said, I didn’t really care about what was to happen. It was more exciting to have finished the book, yay - something to check off the list, then to have eagerly turned the pages to see what happens.
This suspenseful novel by Alex Finlay is a captivating tale about three adults and their experiences growing up in a foster home. Told from the alternating perspectives of the three main characters, this book instantly draws you in with its engaging narrative. Both easy to read and fast-paced, it's a page-turner that will keep you hooked from cover to cover. The characters are well-developed, and the plot is filled with action and intrigue, leaving no room for boredom. If you're looking for a thrilling read with unforgettable characters and a gripping plot, this book is a must-read. Trust me, you won't regret it!
This was my third Alex Finlay. And one of my favorites. This took a twist I wasn't expecting but I enjoyed it! Especially those evil twins. Loved that.
This one started off really strong for me but unfortunately fell flat for the rest of my read. This mysterious thriller is multiple POV that are all pretty gripping from the start! I was totally intrigued with the story after being introduced to Jenna, Nico, and Donnie. As gripping as they all were, they started to drag on for me and I was wanting more and more during most parts of the book. I enjoyed the ending and how everything ended up coming together but wasn’t a fan of the SLOW burn from this one. This was my first Alex Finlay read and I’ve heard amazing things about The Night Shift, which is on my shelf at home to read, so I’m excited to try that one out!
I’m just gonna say this tho some may take it the wrong way- I feel like this was a dudes book. Like for a man who likes action packed thriller movies from the 90’s. Not for me. Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for this copy for review
This book was an interesting and innovative storyline, I liked all the different characters and their connection, however I thought it was just a little too over the top a little too unlikely. But then again historically speaking that's what mystery novels are like so it's not a bad thing I just prefer a little more grounded story.
I've really enjoyed Alex Finlay's books and am a little on the fence with the latest. The plot is great if a little complicated - how the actions of the past may or may not influence a group of people into adulthood. But there are a LOT of characters to keep track of and it got a little confusing at times. I was also bothered by how the neurodiverse character was presented and described. But overall, a super fast read that gets really exciting in the final third of the book.
Read this book in a day.
A stay-at-home mom, a has-been rock star, a reality-TV producer. Three disparate lives. One deadly secret.
The foster children of Savior House never knew the peace of a normal childhood. Raised in an institution, a group of four friends from the home have now grown and gone their separate ways. They haven't seen one another since they left those abusive foster-home halls, until, twenty-five years later, they are reunited for a single, inescapable reason: someone is trying to kill them.
To save their lives, the group will have to revisit the nightmares of their childhoods and confront their past – a past that holds the key to everything.
I just reviewed What Have We Done by Alex Finlay. #NetGalley

This book was admittedly a little hard to get into, so at a certain point I was expecting it to be a pretty predictable thriller. But that’s the thing about this author - Finlay set it up to seem super predictable but then gave us a bunch of wild twists to throw us off in the end, without making the twists feel overdone. That’s, in my opinion, what brings a good thriller to a great thriller. There were still some things that I predicted ahead of time, and by the time it got to the end, I had figured out a big piece of the puzzle but that didn’t make it any less enjoyable to watch the plot unfold.
The only real complaint I had was that I had a hard time feeling connected to any of the characters or feeling the depth of their friendship until close to the end, since the flashbacks were all in short paragraphs within the story rather than having chapters following the non-linear timelines. I also felt Jenna’s storyline was a little unbelievable but I still LOVED it and it made the epilogue even better!
I love Alex Finlays writing style and previous books, and I enjoyed the complexity of the characters and how well their backgrounds were described.
I LOVED this book. Literally ate it up. Read it all in 3 hours. Read this- you will not regret it! I like Alex finlay typically, but I really really liked this one
