I had really high hopes for this one, but it wasn't for me. It felt like an action movie that my husband would watch, so there's definitely an audience for this, but it wasn't me.
I appreciate the chance to read it, and I'll recommend it to action-lovers, though!
I anticipated this being more horror/thriller than action. Not a big action girly. That's not to say it wasn't good, just not for me.
I needed more character development and more thrill/mystery/build up, less action.
I didn't love the characters, which is a huge deal breaker for me.
I received What Have We Done by Alex Finlay on @Netgalley earlier this year. I was so excited in the moment to try it out since I have enjoyed his previous two books. However I didn’t hear the best of things and it caused me to continue putting it off. I finally decided to put a hold for the audiobook in from my library to help me finally get to it.
What Have We Done follows a group of people who at one time knew each other when they were living in a group home. It’s now years later and they are all living their own lives. However they seem to be getting targeted by someone and they have to come together again to figure out who is after them.

I’m disappointed to say that the negative things I had been hearing were right. This is my least favorite of the 3 books I’ve read by this author. I found it to be really confusing and lackluster. I didn’t care for any of the characters. It comes off more action movie than thriller. Listening to the audio made it difficult to figure out what timeline I was in. It didn’t clearly show if we were jumping back in time or if we were in the current timeline. It jumps from one thing to the next very quickly without much development, which made it hard to really connect with anyone or anything that was happening. I contemplated dnfing it a couple of times due to lack of investment. I find even being only a few weeks removed that it was kind of a forgettable story. Bits and pieces stand out, but everything else kind of fades to grey.
2 stars! ⭐️⭐️

After The Night Shift, I was thrilled to get ahold of this one. While I really enjoyed it, I didn't like it quite as much as The Night Shift. I loved the characters and I couldn't put the book down; I had to know what happened to each of them. I do wish that there had more information on what happened in the past, but overall, a great read and I can't wait for Finlay's next book.
This book was really good. I read it in one day. I would definitely recommend this book. It had me on the edge of my seat with all the twists! It is a must read!
This book was fast paced from the beginning; probably something similar to a blockbuster movie. For me, it was difficult to track all the characters as there was a lot of back stories flipping from past to present. It was a lot of who dunnit and what the heck is going on. It's fun to see the how it all plays out but it didn't hook me from start to finish. There were characters I was more invested in and others I skipped over. They payoff was that I didn't see the reveal coming and that's always something!
I disliked this book because of the disjointed characters and olot lines. It was really a spy book, with characters i disliked.
What Have We Done is a solid read by author Alex Finlay. At first I will admit I was a bit confused as to how everything was going to fit together. The story does go back and forth from past to present, but once I really got into it I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery/thriller! I would definitely read more from Finley!
Thank you to St Martin's Press, Minotaur Books and NetGalley for this advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review. My opinions are my own.
What Have We Done was my first of Finlay's. It was a solid suspense-thriller with enough twists and turns to keep me on my toes. Looking forward to more by this author!
The nightmares of the past become the nightmares of the present in this one. Three adults revisit the past they shared in a home for parent less teens. I don’t want to give too much away but Finlay knows how to tell a story.
Thank you #StMartinsPress and #NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review
The twist you won't see coming in this raw and gritty must-read!
I couldn't put this book down once I picked it up! I highly recommend it!
This one missed the mark for me. I was so excited for another Finlay read, and while the beginning gripped me, the mutli-POV felt a bit confusing and I got lost. Still really excited for Finlay's next book coming out in 2024!
This thriller started strong. Immediately there are three POVs, all realizing there is someone out to kill them. The first 30-40% was non stop action. But when it got to 50% and we still weren’t really figuring out what was going on, it started to get a little boring. From there it dragged and got confusing, and then the end was anticlimactic. Honestly, it would be 2 stars but the first 40% was very good. Bummer it didn’t finish that way.
BTW - Jenna CARRIED.
This book had a decent plot. The beginning had me hooked but by the middle I found my interest just wasn't there. I pushed through to the end but it just didn't capture my attention like I hoped it would
"What Have We Done" by Alex Finlay earns its four stars with a magnetic first sentence that hooks readers instantly. The multiple character viewpoints not only provide a nuanced exploration of the narrative but also keep the suspense alive, offering a mosaic of perspectives that enrich the storytelling. The deliberate placement of cliffhangers at the end of each chapter is a masterstroke, propelling the reader forward with an insatiable curiosity. Moreover, the book's abundance of twists ensures that the plot remains dynamic and unpredictable, making it a riveting and thoroughly satisfying read. Finlay's craftsmanship in blending these elements creates a compelling tapestry of mystery and intrigue that is sure to leave readers captivated until the final page.
I really wanted to love this book but I just didn't. It had a nice premise and the characters were pretty interesting, but overall parts of it were boring for me and I wasn't super engaged in finding our how it ended.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an advanced copy of What Have We Done by Alex Finlay.
This was requested when I first found out about NetGalley and I had requested so many ARCs that I could not get to all of them before they were archived. I really wanted to get to this one, as it seemed interesting. If I can find this somewhere for a reasonable price, I will try to get it! I am giving this book three stars, as I don't want to give it a good or bad rating, since I did not get to it and we have to leave a star rating.
I’m very sad to report this is my least liked Alex Finlay. It didn’t have anything to do with the writing, the flow or characters really. I just didn’t care for the plot. I didn’t find it very compelling, and after having read it a few months ago, I had to reread the last chapter in order to remember I had already read it. Yikes!
I really enjoyed this book and am so thankful to have an early copy! Alex Finlay always gets my heart pounding! Thank you so much to netgalley for this advanced readers copy!
