Alex Finlay is the master of twisty thrillers and What Have We Done is no exception. The novel is told from three different points of view— Jenna, Nico, and Donnie. They were the best of friends when they met as parentless teens at the Savior House group home, but lost touch when the home was shut down following the disappearance of several children.
Now, circumstance has brought them together once more. And like last time, the circumstances are far from ideal. The three must reunite to discover who's trying to kill them and why.
Finally got around to it, and was it good! I love a good suspense book that leaves me wanting more page and page!
Many thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This story had me at the beginning. Happily married woman with a husband she adores and 2 step daughters she's trying to form a bond with gets dragged back into her old life as an agent working for "The Corporation" as a contract killer. Yes! For the most part it moved along at a great pace and introduced some interesting characters.
Things got a little muddled for me towards the end and I found my interest slipping. So while this was not a 5 star read for me it did introduce me to Alex Finlay and I will try again with some of his other books which have really great reviews.
I had a great time reading What Have We Done but as time has passed it’s been hard to remember what the story was about. It hasn’t stuck with me like some other thrillers I’ve read.
So many twists and turns that I did not fully anticipate!
I loved that we got a background into each of the characters and a look into their current lives as they all come together to figure out who is trying to kill them. I did find it interesting that we mainly heard from the characters who weren't guilty, but it was cool to see them all piece it together in their own ways.
The ending was not as I expected, but it seemed to wrap up in a nice little package as they went on about their lives!
This was my first book by Alex Finlay and won’t be my last! I enjoyed the storyline and the well thought out plot a lot!
3.5 stars!
A house of horrors for a group of kids with a crazy whirlwind of actions afterwards. I didn’t love it but I would pick up another book from the author
What I Enjoyed:
• Action packed! There was always something coming around the corner.
• Short chapters
• Fast paced
• “who dun it” (even tho it seemed quite obvious which meh)
• Honestly the characters were interesting and I was invested in all of them.
What could have been better?
• While I enjoyed most of the action, at times it felt randomly thrown in for suspense and I didn’t understand why. It wasn’t always needed. A bit overdone.
• Abrupt change between past and present made it hard to keep up
• While I enjoyed all the characters, I was hoping for more development as the story went on.
Overall: it was okay!
I love the trend of a friend group (or former friend group) with a secretive past. And this group's past came together so well! It didn't feel like Alex Finlay's other books, but neither is better or worse.
The characters and their backstories were very well developed. I was drawn right in and certainly intrigued by their pasts. I liked the way the book was written as somewhat of an ensemble in the present, but everyone came together in the scenes that took place in the past.
The plot certainly takes some suspension of belief, but it was a fun and wild ride.
This book was completely wild from the beginning pages, and while I appreciate how swept up I became in this saga, there were just too many leaps of faith required of the reader to feel plausible at all.
Finlay never fails to captivate me! I loved this read and was left mind blown with all the twists and turns. Such a great book!
Thanks to Netgalley, St. Martins Press and Alex Finlay for this ARC. I am running behind on my reading, so sorry . I l like this author so I was very excited to get this new book. I enjoyed this read as much as his other books, it was riveting and exciting and I had a hard time putting it down once I picked it up, and life got in the way or I would have read it in my normal 2 days for a thriller. . Savior House for teens, adults who return because of someone who wants them dead, and my read for Halloween , all contributed to this 5 star review. A heart pounding thriller !
OMG I was so excited to get an advance copy of What Have We Done by Alex Finlay from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review and opinion. I absolutely love his writing and couldn't wait to read this! This book will not disappoint you in any way. Absolutely heart pounding action that will at times make you hold your breath to see what is going to happen next. Do not waste any time - read this ASAP!
A twisty read that led to some unexpected events! This novel is one that I struggled to put down. The story is told in a 3 POV that gives a different viewpoint of the same scenario. Finley has become an author whose books I will pick up with no hesitation.
Twenty-five years ago Jenna, Donnie, Nico, Ben and Artemis lived at Savior House, a home for parentless teens. When the home was shut down, they all went their separate ways and tried to put the abuse they suffered there behind them. When one of them is killed and attempts are made on the lives of the others, they reunite to figure out why they are being targeted and by who.
What Have We Done is told from the POV of Jenna, Donnie and Nico. We meet each of them when the attempt on their life is made and then follow them as they try and figure out what is going on. Through each of their POVs we also get a look back at their time at Savior House and what life was like for them. I really liked getting the back story on these characters. I liked Jenna the best. She was one badass woman.
I loved all the twists and turns this book had. I never figured out who was after them or why. As the book neared the end the tension and suspense ramped up and I was on the edge of my seat.
I really wanted to like this one because I love this author. It was too slow for me and was hard to keep focused at times. Not my favorite, but will definitely read his next book.
I have really liked Alex Finlay's previous works but this one just fell flat for me. I can't quite put my finger on what didn't work but the vibes were just not there. I liked the idea of Jenna having been a trained assassin and someone is hunting her down. I think if the story was only focused on her character it could have been a lot better. Too many things going on with the book and ultimately I didn't care about any of the characters. Not terrible but very forgettable.
What Have We Done is a mystery thriller with multiple POV. Secrets buried 25 years ago by a group of teenagers that were thrown together into a home for parentless teens. Their secret has remained unspoken over the years. Each child has grown into a successful adult. They kept their distance and never spoke. Until now. What has changed? Each one has had an attempt on their life. Forcing them to face their unspoken and shared secret. Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for ARC read in exchange for my review
✨What Have We Done by Alex Finlay✨
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
📖 I received this digital copy of What Have We done from @netgalley and @stmartinspress.
This is the 3rd book I’ve read by Alex Finlay and he always has such unique story lines! Jenna, Donnie and Nico were best friends when growing up in a group home. But, now someone wants them dead…
I really enjoyed this book and the suspense throughout! I did not expect this ending at all!
In What Have We Done, there are three friends who are friends of circumstance. They were together at a group home for orphans. At that group home, they were subject to many different forms of abuse. Back then, the group home was shut down because kids started going missing.
These friends hadn't seen each other since that final day at the group home, until now. Now, someone is trying to kill them. This fast paced thriller is pretty much what you'd expect from Alex Finlay, which is a good thing. I really do enjoy his books.
This was a great book for anyone who loves a fast-paced read. Character depth is minor, but you still learn enough about each character’s past to have the present time make sense!
