Finlay is a master of their craft. It took me a while to figure out the story, but I loved every moment of the ride and liked how it played out. It was a whirlwind of Suspense, thoughts, and emotions. LOVED IT.
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC of the latest Alex Finlay. He has moved up the ranks to one of my favorite authors and I was really excited to be approved for this book.
What Have We Done starts off with a bang and ends with a bang. The entire and I mean entire book was edge of your seat. There were no lulls.
There are 6 kids who grew up in sort of an orphanage type place and they did something as kids. Now they’re adults and someone knows what they did. One of them is dead and the others are targets. The whole and why blew me away.
I wouldn’t classify this one as a psychological thriller but definitely a thriller.
I stayed up way too late reading this and I read it in about 3 days time. Finlay’s books just keep getting better.
Holy 'mokers, Friends...
Alex Finlay hit it out of the park again!
This book is so complex and well written; chock full of superb characterizations. I felt like I knew them so well and the dialogue was so genuine. I was SO invested.
This book grabbed me on Page One and I couldn't wait to get to the end even as I knew how sad I'd be when I got there.
This is not one to miss.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press/Minotaur for gifting me a copy. It is my pleasure to write an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press, and Alex Finlay for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Okay guys, this book was honestly a crazy ride from the moment I started it. I read another review that characterized this book as an “adrenaline thriller” and I have to agree with that description. The action starts in chapter one and literally doesn’t stop until the last sentence of the epilogue. The pacing of the book was pretty good, I didn’t feel like it lagged in any moments. the chapters were super short, which I loved, because it made the book feel as suspenseful as the story content. I wasn’t really a fan of the point of view that the chapters were written in (it was written in third person, but would go back and forth from all the characters). I think I would have enjoyed it more if it had been first person POV and switched between all 3 main characters! At times the plot was a bit unbelievable/unrealistic, which would kind of draw me out of the story. But overall, it was a solid read. The epilogue was a little crazy, especially when I feel like epilogues are usually like a resolution/all tied up moment and this felt more like a “let me throw in one more crazy thing” moment. Recommend for thriller/suspense lovers looking for unique and nonstop action book that keeps you on the edge of your seat!
This was a fast paced thriller with three points of view. I loved the premise, but the overall book, didn't quite live up to the excitement I was hoping. I didn't like the characters as much as I thought I would. However, this was still a good read.
I requested this book because I love Alex Finlay. He's a great author and his books are always taut thrillers that drive me to read the entire book in one sitting. "What Have We Done" is another excellent book that's very different than the other ones he's written. Instead of a usual whodunit, it's a wild ride with flavors of a spy thriller with a very interesting group of characters trying to figure out why they're all being targeted.
Jenna, Donnie, and Nico haven't spoken in years and suddenly are faced with their past in an abusive group home. Each one of them took the lessons from surviving the group home into somewhat successful lives. They realize they're all targets, and reconnect to figure out who's targeting them and why.
The characters are very interesting, although I found their lives oddly successful for the trauma they suffered, although I think Finlay was trying to point out that one can harness trauma into success, regardless of that that looks like. I was very invested in everyone's current lives and wish that we had spent more time in the past to learn more about the three kids and their relationship. Overall, this was great book.
Thanks to netgalley for the ARC.
Thank you so so much to St Martin's Press, Minotaur Books, and NetGalley!
I was so thrilled to read this one following Finlay's Night Shift. This one did not disappoint!
25 years ago, Jenna, Nico, and Donnie were teens in an abusive group home. They were split up when it was shut down and went on to successful lives. Now, someone hunting them down to kill them. To stop them, they have to revisit the trauma from the group home.
Wow! That was quite a read. I never saw the twists coming. Finlay does it again. The writing is excellent. Chapters are told by different characters in the present or in the past. I don't often like this style, but Finlay does a phenomenal job of holding my interest with each character. There's enough given about each character's life that I was able to connect with them. An impressive thriller!
This is being blurbed/promoted as “Alex Finlay's best [book] yet” and I have to respectfully disagree. I think it's quite the opposite.
AF's previous two books are full of twists and turns, cleverly connected characters, and plots that keep the reader on the edge of their seat. This story has none of those. It's honestly the most straightforward mystery/thriller I think I have ever read. The main past event is given away in the prologue and the current present day events are so obvious that I'm not really sure what the purpose of reading is. With the “whodunnit” and the “whydunnit” given away, I feel like there's really nothing left for the reader to discover.
That being said, I never felt like I wanted to stop reading and that's primarily because of the characters. There's just something about them that had me intrigued and curious about their stories. I do wish they had interacted together more, but I found them compelling enough as individuals to keep reading.
So overall, not exactly AF's best work but hey. You win some, you lose some.
25 years ago a group home called savior house was shut down after the disappearances of several girls. Three friends who tried to solve the mystery of the disappearances themselves are now being targeted. Someone wants them dead but who and why after all this time?
DNF at 55%.
So my first book by this author was the night shift and it was one of favorites I read this year. So seeing he had a new book coming out I knew I wanted to try my chance at requesting it! Thankfully I got lucky and granted an ARC! (Thank you NetGalley and the publishers!)
Unfortunately this felt like a complete shift from “the night shift”. Now I’m not saying every book by an author needs to be the same but I was expecting something more thrilling. To me this was like an action movie and although some parts were interesting it just wasn’t gripping enough for me. I honestly didn’t care for any of the characters, they all just felt kind of blah.
Also this story goes back in time to flashbacks of the group home and it can be hard to distinguish when that’s happening. One moment you’ll be in the present and the next line you’re in the past with no warning or context until your halfway done. I had to go back and reread some parts and say to myself “oh that’s the past…duh!” Haha.
I’m not saying this is a bad book by any means so please don’t let my review keep you away from taking a peak at this one. It’s just not as thrilling as I was expecting.
Thank you Mr. Finlay for this riveting, adrenaline-fueled thriller; you did not disappoint! Five teens living in a group home commit a crime, and 25 years latter, it seems someone is out for revenge. One is killed and someone is trying to kill each of the others.
The story follows 3 of the teens in their present day life, and the attempts being made on their lives. Are the attempts connected? Will they be able to figure out who is trying to kill them and escape before anyone else is harmed? While reading what is happening in the present, readers are given details about the characters' past, as they reflect on memories.. I really liked this format rather than having alternate chapters devoted to the past and present. The twists and turns were thrilling, especially at the end! One of my favorite parts of the book are the literary references used as clues! To elaborate further would provide spoilers, and that's not my style!
Congratulations, Mr. Finlay, I feel you have a best seller on your hands! My thanks to the author, NetGalley, and St. Martin's Press for the advanced reader copy. This review is my honest opinion.
Twenty-five years ago, Jenna, Donnie, Benny and Nico lived together in an abusive group home, sharing a terrifying secret. Now, three of them are reunited under the worst possible circumstances: someone is trying to kill them - and Benny is already dead.
Alternating between points of view, the action in this book doesn't stop for a moment - in fact, I would have enjoyed more character development and a slower pace. But for fans of fast-moving action drama, this book delivers two mysteries - one in the past, one in present day - that these characters must solve in order to escape their traumatic past and come out alive.
A solid, action-packed read.
Thank you #netgalley for a free advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinions.
What Have We Done is the latest story from Alex Finlay. Years ago circumstances brought the five teens together as friends. Twenty-Five years later circumstances bring them back together. Be prepared for lots of edge of your seat reading and wanting "one more chapter" before putting down the book. Finlay never disappoints. I want to thank NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an early copy to review.
First off Thank you Netgalley for this Arc
What Have We Done by Alex Finlay was my 1st read by this author & an easy 4 ⭐
Now I need to read everything by this man !
I loved reading from all the characters POVs & although the plot itself may not be super original Mr Finlay threw in some storylines to make it his own . It was a fun easy read that I very much enjoyed.
You kinda know where this book is leading you .. secrets never do anyone any good but I don't think you'll guess everything & that's the fun part. 🖤
Alex Finlay's suspense/psychological thrillers are fantastic and this one does not disappoint!!! From page one to the end, readers will not want to put this book down. Kudos and thanks for the advanced copy.
3.5 rounded to 4
Told from multiple POVs with frequent flashbacks, What Have We Done centers around three characters with a shared past and a huge secret that now threatens all of their lives.
Though the plot didn’t feel overly unique, I was drawn in by the characters and as always Finley’s impressive writing style. It was well paced and the palpable tension kept the pages turning.
I devoured Alex Finley’s previous two novels (Every Last Fear and The Night Shift) and was thrilled to be chosen to read the ARC for his third. Although I didn’t enjoy this one as much, I’m still an avid fan and will continue to look forward to future works.
Having really enjoyed Alex Finlay's last two books, I was very excited when What Have We Done landed in my hands. This one started out really strong for me but ultimately fell kind of flat and unmemorable. I will still be looking forward to reading more from this author in the future.
Thank you to St, Martins Press for an advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
This kept me interested, but who's behind it all becomes really obvious, and it's hard to believe that Jenna, who's supposed to be this master of espionage, doesn't piece it together until it's literally beating her over the head.
This is a thriller about a group of kids from a group home who have a huge secret that could ruin them all. One of them is killed, and then suddenly they all have threats on their lives. They end up working together to figure out who wants them dead, before it's too late.
Interesting premise but not that well executed. 3.5 stars.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you St. Martin’s Press, Minotaur Books & Netgalley for an eARC of What Have We Done by Alex Finlay!
This book follows 3 individuals who were, twenty-five years ago, the best of friends in their abusive group home for parentless teens. Jenna, Donnie and Nico were split up after the disappearance of several kids, leaving the home to be shut down. Each leads a different life now, but the trauma of their childhoods has followed them. When they find themselves reunited because someone is trying to kill them, the group is forced to revisit their childhood nightmares and confront their secrets from the past.
This was my first Finlay book (I know, I know, what have I been doing with my life?) and I really enjoyed it! I love multiple POVs, especially when done expertly as it is here. Each character has their own voice, personality and lives that makes this group so different yet similar in many ways. I loved solving two mysteries while reading - What happened at the group home when they were growing up, and also who is trying to kill the group - And why? I look forward to reading all of Finlay’s back list and whatever is to come next!
3.5 rounded up
Loved Mr. Finlay's other books and was super excited for this one. It is good, but IMHO it is not up to par compared to them. Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book
📚Book Review! 📚
First off, thank you to @netgalley and @stmartinspress for my advanced readers copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving my review.
Overall, this was a pretty good book, but compared to his other two books that I read which I really enjoyed, this one wasn’t my favorite. The book centers around these individuals that as kids were together in this group home for orphaned teenagers and have all grown up to take their certain paths in life. All of these years later, their lives take a turn when all of them are almost killed and they discover that one of their friends and former group home member has been murdered. This one shifts quite a bit between different perspectives and backstories which I wasn’t too fond of and overall I was just a little disappointed with the plot and ending. I wouldn’t discourage anyone from checking out this book, just wasn’t as big of a fan of this one as his other two I read.
