This was my first time reading this author's work and it will not be my last. It is a riveting thriller about a mother-daughter relationship built on many lies. I enjoyed the characters and the two points of view. The build up of tension as we find out more about what is really going is effective and the slight twist at the end was well done. I also enjoyed the retirement setting and respect shown to the it. I really enjoyed the book. 4.25/5 stars
Thank you St. Martin's Press for my #gifted ARC and audiobook! I opted to listen to this because it was narrated by Kate Mara and I love when celebrities narrate books.
I’ve been a big, big fan of Pekkanen’s other works, so I was so excited to get an early copy of this! I loved the mother/daughter duo and relationship. It felt like a new take on this dynamic and one I haven’t seen often! The dual POV was so good. I did end up enjoying the mom’s POV most because of how the past started to unravel.
This is more suspense than it is a thriller, but it was perfectly paced. Things begin to unfold and at exactly the right time. It will keep you engrossed the entire time.
This was an interesting thriller about a mother and daughter and the secrets we keep..Ruth, the mom, has been diagnosed with dementia and through the split point of view writing style, we learn she isn't at all who you think she is. This was an enjoyable novel with good pacing.
Previous books by this author were good and I looked forward to more of the same, but not in this case.
Mother and daughter have only each other and it has been this way since the daughter was born. Now she is about to move out and move on to a new path and finds herself needing to cancel those plans when her mom starts forgetting too much. A diagnosis of Alzheimer's seems in order with the mom's secret history of her own mom having had early onset Alzheimer's. That is something many of us could understand.
What's ironic is that the daughter's job is caring for patients with Alzheimer's in a memory unit. She is filled with horror at the thought of her mom going through that. Spoiler alert! Mom isn't who she says she is and it actually seems mean to inflict that on her child, knowing how the patients weigh on her daughter's mind.
Daughter does some light research and finds enough info to not trust mom anymore. She tries to find mom's real identity which leads to a mess, of course. Mom is in hiding.
The timing and other aspects just all fell into place too easily and the alternating chapters were so closely related that I had to stop and see which one was telling this chapter. It started off good, but then somewhere the ball was dropped and it was a struggle to want to finish. I really didn't care what happened, just make the book end!
3 stars as it started off good, but that can't be said for the entire book. I received this book as an advance reader copy and submit this honest review voluntarily. Thank you NetGalley.
This book was so well-written. I couldn't help but keep reading and/or listening to the audiobook to see what would happen next. The twists and turns are well-planned out and flow easily into the storyline. The author is clearly gifted in creating a story that the reader becomes obsessed with.
Catherine and her mother, Ruth have always been close. For this reason, Catherine believes she knows her mother. So imagine her surprise when things happen one day and her mother seems to be a different person from he woman she always suspected her to be. At times the plot twists can feel a little far fetched but by and large, the book is a solid entry for this genre and I enjoyed it immensely.
AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: In addition, I also reviewed the audio version and found it to be quite well done. The narration felt perfect for the characters and really kept me sucked into the plot. Well Done!
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC.
I'm a big Sarah Pekkanen fan, particularly of her books co-written with Greer Hendricks. I had high hopes for this one, but I struggled with a few things. The overall story of Catherine and Ruth's life was 1) far-fetched and 2) obvious in that it wasn't a normal life. As Ruth's story became more and more unraveled, and Catherine's childhood history was told, it was so clear that things just weren't as they seemed. So the further the story went, the less believable it became. Overall, I enjoyed the characters (although I had a hard time truly liking Ruth) and the story was intriguing enough to keep my interest through the end, but I think I had an expectation for the book based on previous books I read, and it just didn't meet it for me. It wasn't bad; I just hoped for more.
Thoroughly enjoyed this new thriller from Sarah Pekkanen! I was obsessed with both POVs, which really had me suspecting the other person the entire time as they were switching back and forth. I also loved the idea of them being a mother/daughter duo - I'm not sure I have read a book like that before! I didn't see the twists coming at all and loved reading it all unravel through the ending. While one part of the end was not my favorite in the way it just seemed too good to be true, the other left me wanting more in the BEST way. I will definitely read more from her, and I absolutely must try lasagna pizza now - if you know, you know!
In Gone Tonight we follow two main characters, Ruth and her daughter Catherine. They have both just found out the devastating news that Ruth has been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's Disease. Catherine is dealing with the thought of having to take care of her mother who has a condition that is irreversible, when she starts to develop feelings that maybe that isn't really the truth. She starts to realize that maybe she doesn't even know her mother at all. The book is told in dual points of view, and through this we get told the truth and see how this story folds into something else completely.
While I did enjoy reading this book, I felt like it just was very average for me. I didn't feel like there were parts that really blew my mind as far as the thriller go, and it was just too much of a slow burn for me. I felt like the characters fell flat and wished that we spent more time with them at the end when all the action happened instead of such a long build up to the major twist. It wasn't bad, just not something that I'll probably remember in a years time.
Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book. All opinions within this review are my own.
Gone Tonight is a slow-burn thriller. Started off a bit slow, but then kept me on the edge of my seat as the story unfold. Twists that NOBODY will see coming!
I had an e-copy as well as audio. The audio was very well done and I appreciated her different voices for the characters. With dual POVs (Catherine and Ruth) sometimes this is difficult to do.
Gone Tonight was an emotional page turner and recommended for anybody who loves a twisted tale! Loved it so much!
I really thought I would like this book more than I did!! But still I thought that was okay. I would not read it again, but definitely recommend
6/10 - This book reminded me a lot of Pieces of Her by Karin Slaughter! A very similar plot about the relationship between a mother and her daughter. Coincidentally, I gave that book the same rating lol.
Overall, it was a quick read with a very predictable ending. I was hoping for a bigger twist at the end, but I still enjoyed the mother/daughter bond that was displayed throughout.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for sharing this digital copy in exchange for my honest review.
I was approved for this one after pub date, but I couldn't wait to finally read it after hearing so many positive reviews!
Everything you have heard about this book is true. It's fantastic. It grabbed ahold of me and didn't lose my attention. I don't often reread books, but this one one I will probably read more than once. Highly recommend!!

It's always been just them, Ruth and Catherine, and no one else. Well, that's what Ruth wants her daughter Catherine to know. Catherine has always believed what her mom has told her and she never questioned anything. That is until Ruth started being forgetful. A lapse in memory here and a slip-up there causes Catherine to become suspicious of her mother and starts to dig into her past which leads them down a dangerous path. Will all secrets be revealed? Will Catherine and Ruth's relationship survive? Find out in Gone Tonight.
I truly enjoyed reading this book! The dual perspectives from both Catherine and Ruth gives insight into their thoughts, who they are, and the dynamic of the mother-daughter relationship and how it changes throughout the book. The pacing and writing of the story are perfectly in sync which helps create the right amount of tension at the right moments as the mysteries are revealed and when the characters are faced with life-threatening issues and hard truths. This leads to a satisfying ending, but at the same time, you want more. With how the book ended, my fingers are crossed for a potential sequel!!
Thank you, Netgalley, St. Martin's Press and Sarah Pekkanen, for providing me with this ARC in exchange for a honest review.
An enjoyable slow burn of a thriller for me! The interconnected pieces slowly show their faces much as someone does keeping watch from the shadows. Ruth is certainly a mother that you don’t want to cross. One of my favorite pieces of the story is Timmy and how he connects with his sister - she takes care of him through everything. Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for this fun read!

This is a story which interchanges chapters, written as one chapter moms story and the alternating chapters written as the daughters story,
Mom and daughter live together but as the story unravels you quickly realize how different they are. Each one is doing what they think best to protect the other but this of course will come at a cost. With their relationship almost destroyed each one must work hard to repair the mess they created.
Lots of twists and turns which kept me riveted. This is the first solo attempt written by this author that usually writes as a team. Well written and exciting.
I look forward to future books by this author.
I am a little late in reviewing this, so I won't write a full review, but I will say that I enjoyed "Gone Tonight" immensely! I honestly could not put it down, and I felt compelled to finish it the same day I started it (even though that meant staying up until 2 a.m.). I highly doubt you will be disappointed if you pick this up!
Thanks so much to St. Martin's Press, Sarah Pekkanen, and NetGalley for this ARC!
Thank you to NetGalley for providing a digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Catherine and her mother Ruth live a quiet, 'vanilla' life together, living in the same apartment and working humbling jobs. Things start to make Catherine second guess Ruth's actions once Catherine accepts a new job and gets her own apartment in a town a couple hours away. As the unraveling begins, the reader can easily see through Ruth's intentions and the impending roadblocks ahead. For this reason, I thought of this as less thriller/mystery and more on the side of obvious foreshadowing. There was potential to throw some curve balls I didn't see coming.
GONE TONIGHT is a riveting suspense thriller penned by author Sarah Pekkanen. Fans will recognize the name as half of the award winning, dynamic writing duo Pekkanen/Henricks. GONE TONIGHT is Pekkanen's first solo venture in the thriller genre, and the result is a gripping tale centered around the relationship between a mother and daughter and how well they really know each other. The story that unfolds is compelling, heart pounding and captivating.
Mother Ruth has spent a lifetime protecting her daughter from a past she fled as a pregnant teenager - one her twenty-four-year-old daughter Catherine knows nothing about but is beginning to question as she prepares to leave their home to begin her nursing career in Baltimore. Unfortunately, Mother Ruth is displaying early signs of Alzheimer's making Catherine leery about leaving her alone. With no known relatives to turn to for help, she cancels her plans to move. Frustrated with her mother's continued refusal to discuss her past or reveal the identity of Catherine's father, she begins checking up on her mother's activities and finds some puzzling inconsistencies between what her mother says and reality. Suddenly, the close relationship that's always existed between mother and daughter becomes awkward and strained as each are forced to look at the other differently. Since Catherine's birth, it's been just the two of them against the world, but with each secret Catherine uncovers she's left wondering if she ever knew her mother at all. Ruth will do anything to keep her daughter close and her secrets buried to protect her, and Catherine will do anything to find the missing key that opens the door to the past revealing what and/or who her mother is hiding. When it's all said and done, their world will change forever.
GONE TONIGHT is an addictive, tension laden thriller that unfolds through the dual points of view of mother and daughter, giving readers insight into both unreliable characters' thoughts and plans. Readers are privy to Ruth's emotionally charged backstory as they hear her words read from journal entries foreshadowing the potential threat Catherine's unknowingly unleashing with her covert probe into the past. Pekkanen utilizes short, choppy chapters with mini cliffhangers to entice readers to keep turning the pages without stopping and believe me, it's highly effective. The pace escalates with the rising tension as layers are peeled back and secrets revealed with danger creeping ever closer. The author does a fantastic job of exploring the complexities of a mother daughter relationship and utilizing them in weaving a dark, twisted story that explodes into a shocking climax. While GONE TONIGHT starts off a bit slowly allowing readers time to tune in to the situation, it soon grips readers by the throat refusing to let go until the final astounding page.
Sarah Pekkanen has crafted a stunning, well-structured and paced suspense thriller delivered via unreliable narrators. The exploration of the many facets of mother-daughter relationships, especially when riddled with half-truths and secrets, lays the groundwork for a highly emotional, immersive suspense thriller. GONE TONIGHT solidifies Pekkanen's place as a solo artist in the genre. Highly recommended to fans of suspense thrillers.
This is one of those books that could go any direction while you’re reading it, so it keeps you guessing the entire time. I absolutely loved it and read it in a night. Worth the hype!!!
If you enjoyed The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave, I think you'd like Gone Tonight by Sarah Pekkanen.
Both books do a great job of switching from past to present and slowing uncovering secret pasts while creating a sense of tension.
Gone Tonight introduces us to Catherine Sterling, a nurse at a memory care facility who is about to move to another state. But Catherine's mother Ruth seems like she's willing to do anything to stop her. Ruth's past has always been a secret to Catherine, so when Catherine catches Ruth in a shocking lie, she decides to dig further into her mother's past.
The beginning is a slow build, letting us get to know Catherine and Ruth, both in the present and the past, but from about the halfway point on, it's fast-paced action. If you read a lot of thrillers and mysteries, I wouldn't expect to be surprised at most of the twists and turns, but the quick paced writing style and sense of urgency did make this a fun and enjoyable read.
