As a pregnant teenager, Ruth ran away from home. It has been just her and her daughter, Catherine, for over twenty years. Catherine is an adult now, and ready to spread her wings. Ruth is not ready for her daughter to leave.
Gone Tonight is told using Ruth and Catherine’s points of view. Both characters think they know the other better than they really do, which makes for an interesting read.
A slow-burning, tense, and twisty psychological thriller. Recommended to readers who enjoy thrillers centered around mother/daughter relationships.
I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I am a huge fan of Sarah Pekkanan. I think have enjoyed her thrillers and have also enjoyed her earlier books This book unfortunately, fell short. It was not believable and I could not connect with either of the main characters. I
Also felt that it was very predictable. The author remains an auto read for me but this book really fell short. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I am a fan of Sarah Pekkanen - either solo or with her writing partner. Gone Tonight was one of the best thrillers I read this year, and navigating the relationship of Ruth and Catherine is one wild ride.
Pekkanen's masterful storytelling keeps you guessing until the very end, leaving you questioning the nature of love, family, and the lengths we go to protect those we hold most dear.
Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for sharing this one with me. All thoughts are my own.
im a huge fan of her books and ill likely read anything she writes! Very twisty, fast paced. The plot was something that I hadn't seen before which is refreshing with this genre.
The pace was a bit slow for me for most of the story, but revved up at the end. This book was overall fine, but at times I felt I was a bit contrived and lackluster.
This was a bit of a roller coaster. Mom and daughter have a strange relationship that unfolds throughout the story. It's hard not to be frustrated with the characters throughout most of the book. I enjoyed the read. Thank you for the ARC!
Wow. That is just one word to describe this book. I am still stunned. This was my first Sarah Pekkanen book, but it most certainly will not be my last. This book was incredible. I loved how solid the structuring on this book was. The twisting plot and the tension, oh my! I also really enjoyed the multiple POVs. I was captivated the entire time and was on the edge of my seat. This was such a great read!
Rounded up to 4.5 Stars. I love love love this author and all of her books have been 4-5 stars. What a thrill this book was it kept me intrigued the entire time.
Thank you #netgalley for a copy
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! No spoilers. Beyond amazing I enjoyed this book so very much. The characters and storyline were fantastic. The ending I did not see coming Could not put down nor did I want to. Truly Amazing and appreciated the whole story. This is going to be a must read for many many readers. Maybe even a book club pick.
Gone Tonight follows the alternating points of view of Katherine and her mother. Katherine is a young woman excited about breaking out on her own, but her mother is displaying some disturbing signs of Alzheimer’s. Katherine wants her mother to get confirmation from a doctor, but she’s hesitant. Ruth, Katherine’s mother, is hiding a few things from her doting daughter. I enjoyed watching the story unfold through both women’s perspectives. I thought this was a well written, thought provoking thriller.
I loved this book!! At first I was confused by where the story was going with all the talk of dementia. But once I got about 30% in to the book...wow. This book kept me on my toes! I loved the dual POV's, the suspense and I liked both characters. I would highly recommend this book if you enjoy suspense and books about family drama
This was a unique thriller in that there is a very big focus on the mother daughter relationship in this one. The beginning was a tad slow but the twists kept coming and were some ever juicy! Once I got into the story, I couldn't put it down anymore - it just sucked me in and would not let go! I can't say much without giving away the plot but I enjoyed this one!
CW: Sexual assault, child abuse, bullying, domestic abuse, alcoholism.
A huge thanks to St-Martin's press and NetGalley for the ARC for review, all opinions are my own.
GONE TONIGHT is an up-all-night mother-daughter thriller that asks the reader how well do we really know those closest to us?
Centering around single mum Ruth and her daughter Catherine, Pekkanen takes us on a chilling journey of what lengths a mother will go to, to protect her child. Ruth and Catherine have always been close as its been just the two of them for all of Catherine's life, When Catherine accepts a new position at The John Hoskins Hospital in Baltimore, ready to start her own life, she notices a steady decline in her mothers health.
Chock full of tension and twisty secrets, I read this in one sitting. Brilliant, suspenseful, emotional and utterly entertaining.
Thank you St. Martin's Press and Netgalley for the EArc in return for an honest review.
Mother and daugher duo Catherine and Ruth have always been close. Ruth, being a single mom, protests Catherine fiercely.
Ruth starts to forget things: her keys, missing money, her sense of direction. The doctor thinks she's showing signs of early dementia.
Naturally, Catherine is worried and starts digging into her mom's life. What she discovers will change her life forever.
Told in dual povs and past and present timelines, we delve into the life of the close-knit mother/daughter. We see how lies and past decisions can change the trajectory of a relationship once those things come to the surface. I love this author's books. I will continue to read her work.
This one kept me up all night! I could not put it down!! Fast-paced and an unforgettable twist!!!
Pekkanen knows how to write a beautifully crafted family drama! I thoroughly enjoyed the multiple point of views that were presented, giving us all sides of the story.
This was an interesting storyline with mom and daughter. It would've made everything simpler/easier if mom confided in her adult daughter about her secrets but then there'd be no story lol. Still 4-stars as the story kept me entertained.
The storytelling here was next level! This one hooked me from the start and took me on a wild ride of suspense. I loved how the story was told from both POVs but then also the journal entries of the earlier time. Definitely up there for favorite thriller of the year!
I love Sarah Pekkanen's books and Gone Tonight is another fabulous read that will keep you turning the pages until the very end.
This book is truly what a psychological thriller is all about. It's multi-layered, it's fast-paced, and each with chapter comes another element of the story that will surprise. While it's a bit of a slow burn in the beginning, it's not necessarily paced slow. She takes her time setting up the story and making the reader question everything. The last half of the book moved so incredibly fast that I couldn't even believe I when I came up on the ending. And the end was definitely awesome.
Another win in my book from Pekkanen!
4.5/5 stars!
Thank you St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the eARC!
Ruth and Catherine, mother and daughter, have been inseparable for Catherine’s entire life. The only thing Catherine really knows about Ruth’s past is that Ruth cut ties with everyone and ran away when she found out she was pregnant.
When Ruth starts to become forgetful and then is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Catherine feels the urgency to learn everything she possibly can. But the more Catherine digs, the more questions he has - how much of what her mom has told her is even the truth?
Great read! I really got sucked in and couldn’t put it down. The way that Ruth’s past came to light bit by bit kept me guessing which way it would all go.

Hold on tight while we go for a wild ride learning Ruth's life story she never told her daughter Catherine.
This book was so gripping and captivating! I loved the alternating points of view, the pace of the story and the shorter chapters. Once I started, I could not wait to discover the pieces of Ruth's life and follow on her journey! You will believe the story ends one way, but instead may be another. I highly recommend this book!
