This was really cute! A story about the oldest sister feeling like she doesn’t have her own space at home, which is crowded with noise and people. The drawings are cute and I really like Pauline’s imagination and her love for her family, even though they can be a pain sometimes, lol.
This one straddles the line between graphic novel and picture book. It's a bit longer format but has a plot one sees more typically in the picture book set. Easy enough to follow and Pauline is certainly a relatable child.
Pauline feels like she has no space or attention for herself with her loud, hectic family. She decides to run away, but finds she already misses certain things before she's even gone. A sweet little story about how ensuring children have space for themselves. I feel like the parents in this story should have done a little bit better job of paying attention to Pauline's needs before she felt the need to run away, but this could serve as a good reminder for busy parents.
Note: I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley. I was not compensated in any other fashion for the review and the opinions reflected below are entirely my own. Special thanks to the publisher and author for providing the copy.
'A Place for Pauline' by Anouk Mahiout with illustrations by Marjolaine Perreten is a picture book told in comic book form about a young girl trying to find her place.
Pauline lives with her parents and 2 younger siblings with another on the way. The house is loud and she is always getting blamed for doing too much or too little. She has a hideout, but it's time to move on, so she starts to plan.
This was a sweet story that made me laugh. The art is pretty great too! I love stories that have charm and heart and I think older siblings will relate to Pauline.
It was a sweet quick read although I would say it's targeted more at children than adults. I would definitely recommend reading this book to any first children with siblings who may be feeling overshadowed. Cute story with lovely illustrations.
Pauline is the oldest child in her family, with a younger brother, toddler sister, and a sister on the way. Her home is a busy place that seems filled with noise and people everywhere she goes. She doesn't know how to help with her sister (mom is inconsistent); her brother is very active and complains, so she gets blamed.
What Pauline wants most is to visit her grandmother (so much like her) in France! But almost as good, she uses a closet with pillows and books where she has quiet!
She makes a plan to go to France, but something changes her mind... What could it be?
This is a sweet story of a girl who wants to help and feel valued, but nobody gives her quiet time to think and talk. It's hard to do with so much happening. They seem to think she can take care of herself already. But little girls still need their family, and if the family is smart, they will see they need her too!
4/5

I think I expected more pain from this than I was given, which is an odd thing to say LOL. A Place for Pauline sounded like it would be a little love letter to the older sisters/siblings in the world that don't necessarily feel the best and it was good but I expected a bigger punch to the gut and it was just a light whack.
I liked the illustrations and it was good, but not what I thought or hoped as I didn't necessarily identify with the main character like I thought I was going to.
This book was given to me via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was a cute story with creative pictures about a girl who feels she needs a place to herself. She is imaginative and curious. My child enjoyed this story.
A very short book but so full of charm! I immediately fell in love with the art style and I related so much to Pauline. So much heart in a small package. I highly recommend this for something light and sweet.
Thank you House of Anansi Press Inc., Groundwood Books for the egalley! All opinions my own.

This adorable children's graphic novel follows Pauline who, as the eldest child, is struggling to find where she fits in her growing family. What follows is sweet and relatable, and I completely understand her desire for peace and quiet.
I found this very well-paced and think it would be lovely read for any child, but especially one who is in Pauline's situation. This story explores themes of independence, freedom, family, home, and belonging in a lovely way. It's simple, but that absolutely makes sense for a children's story.
The art style is also quite simple, but colourful, adorable, and a bit quirky. I was originally drawn to the cover because that is my ideal life right there: surrounded by books, pillows, and a cat. I feel this would make a wonderful gift for any child!
My copy was horizontally squished, but that wasn't an issue with the book but the copy on NetGalley.
This book is so cute. I remember feeling just like Pauline as a child. Even now sometimes. I wish I had a place in my house where I could hide away and read my books in peace and quiet. I thought it was sweet at the end where she decides to stay instead of hopping on the boat to run away and instead was able to bond with family when she didn't think anyone was paying attention to her.
Adorable short (50pg) coming of age story about finding your place. Especially when you think you dislike where that is, all set and ready to move on. Only to see the world from a new point of view and learn how the value of things, people, and you; in the role you choose.

A cute little coming-of-age comic about accepting the role of eldest daughter! Wish it was longer and the characters were fleshed out more, but it's a quick enjoyable read nonetheless!
Sweet, endearing, and heartfelt! The less than 50 pages of A Place for Pauline to beautifully express so much emotion. Because of how strongly you identify with it, though it can be read in a single sitting, this is the kind of book you want to take your time with.
Pauline's conflicting feelings, such as feeling out of place, yearning for isolation and a quiet environment, finding comfort in literature and silence, or wishing to leave it all behind, struck a chord with me. I particularly adored the stunning artwork and red accents.
An excellent read that makes you think about what home is and makes you long for it.
This was such a cute book! It's about Pauline who is the oldest kid in her family and has no place to herself. So she decides to make a place for herself. Then she decides to leave and go on a boat trip. But as she's trying to leave she's reliving memories of her siblings, father, and mother.
This was adorable and I really loved the artwork.
this book was so sweet! This book shows the difficulties of not fitting in and having complex emotions. The message was so important and I would recommend this to EVERYONE, especially people who are struggling with fitting in.
Mental health breaks and a space of their own are both very important things for kids. Pauline's home seems too crowded, loud, and busy, but she's able to get a little break in her secret room under the stairs. But even that doesn't seem like enough, and she's all ready to run away to France, but before she can, she gets something she really need: one-on-one, calm time with a parent.
Part picture book, part comic book. I think the blending was a wise choice. The story itself isn't long enough for a full graphic novel, even for a child, but it would be WAY too long for a picture book. Together, it's a longer read, but also a good one for bedtime. Not much happens, and that's soothing.
Advanced reader copy provided by the publisher.
Adorable illustrations, Pauline is delightful and easy to relate to. I will definitely add this one to the library!
A very sweet little story. This reminds me of the show Bluey in the best possible way. A very heartwarming story all around.
Very cute, short graphic novel about the troubles of an oldest child. Pauline is the oldest, but she doesn't feel like she fits in her family. So she decides to run off...but wait. Are those cookies?
