This book felt like a personal attack with it's relevancy to my life, a great selection for perpetually single millennials who need a pick me up
This was my first time reading this author’s work, and I LOVED it. I’m a librarian, so I was instantly attracted to the plot, since Sloane is a librarian, and the many book references and book quotes throughout the story thrilled this old librarian’s soul. The book has five different viewpoints, and at first I thought this might be a little confusing, but it actually adds the perfect amount of depth to the story, and you get to know these five very different people on a more intimate level. All of these distinct personalities culminate into a thought-provoking, soul-stirring read that will grab your heart and not let go. (I was a sobbing mess by the time I finished the last few chapters). I would highly recommend this book to everyone, and I look forward to reading more of Lucy Gilmore’s work in the near future.
Book Review of The Lonely Hearts Book Club
What a sweet book about how friendship (even with unlikely people) and books (even the ones you’re not crazy about) can help you understand yourself and others.
As with many books, the quote that precedes the novel doesn’t come clear until the end. In The Lonely Hearts Book Club, author Lucy Gilmore quotes Anne of Green Gables as saying: “All things great are wound up with all things little.” In other words, the most important parts of life—love, relationships, purpose, and hope—grow out of tiny seeds, a kind word here, an extra effort there—no matter how small or seemingly insignificant you feel like those words and actions are.
This book is about small things that are really big things. A seemingly “small” librarian with a “small” life makes decisions that lead to big changes in the lives of the people around her. The characters, who seem to have little in common, develop a bond over their love of books and, in doing so, find companionship where there
once was loneliness and purpose where they were once only getting by.
A colorful cast of characters tell the story from their points of view. Gilmore does a great job of distinguishing each voice and giving the reader a reason to root for them. I have to admit, though, I really didn’t like Arthur, an irascible retired professor, until the very end. Disliking a character sometimes slows down my desire to read, but rarely stops it.
It was worth hanging on, which I guess is another lesson of the book. Give people grace. Give others, especially those who are different from you, the opportunity to reveal their hearts before deciding they’re not for you.
This book is so special! It is told through the point of view of five characters who are all very different personalities and yet connected. It’s about love relationships found family and of course, books. My favorite interactions are those between Sloane and Arthur, their sparring banter is endearing and made me laugh out loud. Over the course of the book these very different individuals come together to form a unique book club and learn truths about themselves. .
One of the most beautiful books I've ever read.
There's a lot of things I can say about this book, first thing, if you're a reader, a book lover you're gonna love this book.
We had the story of this people who feel like they're alone in the world, they feel like they don't deserve happiness, or love or the life they wanted, they're lonely people.
And we see their journey, getting g to k ow each other's story and realizing that maybe they're not completely alone, and the thing that bound them together are books.
As a book lover, I love books that talk about books, and this one was so incredible.
The characters are people that you can relate to, their probably the most human characters I've ever read, they are feeling to much and tahye had the ups and downs we sometimes feel, and that's one thing I love about them.
This book made me feel understood and I relate to the characters, it made me feel a lot of things .
I think this is going to be one of the best books of this year
This was such a wonderful book about journey of grief and the healing from the pain with books and friendships. How reaching out to someone struggling helps form the bonds of human connection; and, how those bonds strengthen with time spent together. While I thought this book would be lighthearted, it packs an emotional punch. Each character was written in such a nuanced way as we learned about them. Sloane and Arthur had the most complete character arcs in the book. While Mateo, Greg and Maisey had open ended arcs. All the characters coming together as a group was done in such a thoughtful way. All around a lovely book. One I will find myself reading again. And one I will be recommending to people to pick up.
Thank you to the publisher, the author and NetGalley for the ARC!
I absolutely loved every second of this one! Any book that focuses on books, bookshops, book clubs, etc. I’m completely there for, and this was no exception! I absolutely loved the main character, and the author’s writing was incredibly well paced and the character were well rounded!
I went into this one not really sure what to expect and I think going in mostly blind is the way to go. I really enjoyed this story and all of the characters and definitely started to care about all of them and actively root for them which doesn't happen often to me when reading. I really liked the use of the multiple point of views in the story and think it helped to develop the story and the characters. I would for sure recommend this one. I want to thank NetGalley and SOURCEBOOKS Casablanca for the digital arc in exchange for an honest review.
I really felt good Sloane in this book. She is content with her life, but doesn't really realize that she can have more. When Arthur the curmudgeon comes into her life a lot of things change and she starts making more connections with people around her.
Loved all the books in this story and how they helped bring all these characters together.
Thanks NetGalley for this ARC.
I have come to love this authors work. This book is packed with heart and you can tell the author put a lot of love into it. Will definitely be purchasing when it releases!
A touching, well written story about the power of human connection and how one person can change your whole life. An uplifting read that you will really enjoy
It’s been about a week since finishing this book and I’m still unsure how I feel about it. I loved how characters were developed and the overarching messaging of this story.
There were just parts of it that I wish had been further expanded on or reworked. Over all you do grow to love these characters and their relationships
There is so much going on in this story, so many emotions and life changes.
The characters are so entertaining and I enjoyed meeting each of them and learning their stories. Sloane and Matteo work at the library, where grumpy Arthur stops daily. One day he doesn't come in and Sloane gets worried. She tracks down his house and then we meet Maisey, Arthur's next door neighbor (and her daughter, Bella); Greg, his estranged grandson; and Nigel, a long lost colleague. As the story goes along, they all step in to take care of Arthur and form a book club. All the stories are so well crafted and twisted together.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for a temporary, digital ARC in return for my review.
This book was not expected. I thought it would be a lightheaded read, but it has introspective takes on love, loss, and families/friendships. I was surprised in a good way!
The Lonely Hearts Book Club was a cosy and heartwarming read. Being able to dive deeper into each characters own perspective made me, as a reader, appreciate and love them so much more! I know a lot of readers at the bookshop will absolutley adore this book!
I really enjoyed this lovely read. After getting to know and like Sloane, I was a little put off to be introduced to a new POV. But I soon learned that each new POV character was equally compelling, leading up to the expected softening revelations about grumpy Arthur. I rooted for all of them to gain confidence and begin to really live full lives, bolstered by their new bonds of friendship.
This book was so so heartwarming. I fell in love with the characters and am sad to leave them (although they will stay with me for a long time I am sure). This book was everything I could ask for: sarcastic, quirky, sentimental. I was hooked until the very last page. I cannot wait for this book to be released so that others have the opportunity to experience this wonderful book.
Thank you netgalley for the arc!!
The Lonely Hearts Club Book Club was a charming read. I have read many novels with book club in the title, yet this novel managed to be unique. Told through the viewpoint of several different characters, the plot was steady with just enough twists and turns and a very satisfying ending. I enjoy books with dynamic characters who evolve throughout the novel. I think this novel will appeal to a wide audience and provide a very enjoyable read.
When librarian Sloane Parker notices the absence of patron Arthur McLachlan after several days, she is concerned enough to look up his address and check on him. Neighbor Maisey informs her he had been taken to the hospital but is back home again. After discovering he is all alone, Sloane and Maisey decide the three should start a book club - it wound keep Arthur occupied and allow them to keep an eye on him. Along the way, Arthurs estranged grandson Greg is drawn into the circle, along with fellow librarian Matteo and Arthur's former associate Nigel. The camaraderie formed daily interactions and book club meetings changes all their lives.
