What a cute read!! I love a read with a relatable main character and I wish there had been more focus on him rather than the other characters, who were not as fun. I think there were some moments that could have been excluded as they took away from character development and plot enhancement but overall, what a fun summer read.

This is the second book I’ve read this summer about a gay best friend getting swept up in their best friend’s wedding and finding love. DiDomizio’s book is by far the better of the two. It highlights difficulties in relationships, both platonic and romantic, and has character growth. The resolution has all involved parties recognize, and apologize, for their mistakes and poor actions, which was satisfying and realistic.

That said, for me it too long to reach that resolution. For most of the book, the main character is a doormat and his friends (and friends of his friends) petty and unpleasant. The two main plots didn’t fully balance for me. I would have liked either more romance and less focus on the bride and groom or vice versa. Likewise, while I appreciated the more in depth look at the gay best friend trope, sometimes it felt like the book was too focused on emphasizing that point than letting things develop organically.

For anyone who has ever had to play both sides, for anyone who has ever struggled to keep up with their friends, you will feel SEEN by Nicolas DiDomizio. Dom Marino, Italian American Gay BF of a couple who are about to marry is the best man for his childhood guy pal and on team bride for his new bestie who shares his love of SATC and skincare. This is a book about loyalty to your friends and loyalty to yourself, but it is told with DiDomizio's brand of humor and hijinks that reveals the humanity of each situation. With a bachelor party, bachelorette party, and wedding to attend in the direct aftermath of his own failed relationship, Dom has to navigate being a guy's guy, being the gay guy, being the LGBTQ counselor to a new friend, and learning his own worth. The book is a good time from start to finish, but it is also a temperature check on the roles we force people to play.

This book was so freaking clever and witty and funny I can’t even. I laughed so much.

The main character is a gay guy dealing with a lot of normal gay issues and I love how this book tackles some of those issues that a lot of people tend to ignore.

I was skeptical about the romance at first but in the end I thought it was cute. A story we don’t often get about a famous jock coming out in his thirties.

I definitely will recommend this book to everyone I love it so much.

This book turns the gay best friend trope on its head, making the character the center of the story, and showcasing the ways their friends take advantage of their friendship. Very messy drama ensues, so fans of reality tv may enjoy this often funny but very messy group of friends!

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

What is better than your two best friends getting married? Being ‘The Best Man’ at their wedding. However, what started out as an honor, quickly devolves into utter chaos. Will Dom be able to keep both bride and groom happy, or will his divided loyalties be his downfall?

If you are worried that the current writers strike will leave you desperate for entertainment, look no further than, Nicolas DiDomozio’s, The Gay Best Friend. This book is a hot mess. Just when I thought things couldn’t get crazier, they somehow did.

While this book has plenty of drama, it is also has tons of heart. DiDomozio explores complex topics such as friendship and sexuality. Getting to see things from gay man’s perspective opened my eyes to some of the struggles they face.

Special thanks to NetGalley, Dreamscape Media, and Sourcebooks Casablanca for allowing me to read and listen to this book in exchange for my honest review.

Dom is stuck between his two soon-to-be-wed best friends and while this book was fun and drama filled, I also felt bad for him being placed in that awkward position. There is a romantic subplot for Dom in this one but I didn't feel like this was the main focus of the story. I feel like the focus was mainly the dynamics of his friendship with his two best friends, it was rocky for a bit but ultimately nice to see how the conflict resolved. I do have to say that while I'm happy Dom found love, it was a bit cringe because he basically outed this other character without his consent.

Content warnings: Homophobia, outing, toxic friendship, infidelity, sexual content, gaslighting.

The Gay Best Friend
Contemporary/LGBTQIA+ fiction
4.5⭐️

Thanks @netgalley and @sourcebooks for the advanced digital copy. This book is out now!

How often do you know from the cover that you’re going to love a book?

That was me and this author’s 2021 debut novel, Burn it All Down, and I knew I found a new auto read author. The author’s writing style is the perfect blend of humor and heart, and I had a smile on my face for most of the book, not to mention all the laugh out loud moments.

The Gay Best Friend was just as enjoyable for me; I went in blind, and I think that’s best to watch how Dom’s story and relationships work out. Dom could definitely be self sabotaging and dependent at times, but as the story progresses we watch him grow and become his own person. I’m really looking forward to future books from this author!

While I’ll recommend this to everyone, in particular, fans of Byron Lane’s books should give this author a try. While the authors tell different stories, I felt a similar blend of humor and heart.

What’s an author who you think deserves more love on bookstagram? This book only has about 500 ratings on @goodreads which is just unbelievable to me!

I love Nic DiDomizio's writing and will always read his work. The Gay Best Friend was hilarious, emotional, relatable, and did I mention hilarious?

There were so many sarcastic comments or hidden jokes that had me laughing out loud or smiling to myself. But while many parts of the book were humorous, it also covered some serious and emotional topics. I think that goes to show how talented Nic D.'s writing is.

I also LOVED all the golf references and terminology throughout - huge fan!

Patrick and Kate are getting married and their Gay Best Friend Domenic is caught in the middle with the wedding hoopla. It is an interesting twist in how their relationships evolve so Domenic moves to being just their Best Friend!

Domenic’s two best friends are getting married to each other. As his own love life is falling apart, he has to spend the summer celebrating his friends and their love: first at the groom’s bachelor party, then at the bride’s bachelorette party, and then finally at the actual wedding. He finds himself in the middle of the couple and to make it even more interesting, he has a bit of a romantic run in with Bucky, one of the groomsmen and a PGA golf superstar.

This book is full of so much heart and left me feeling so joyful. This book had everything I love in a rom com - a real, chaotic and slightly messy main character, laugh out loud moments, sweet, tender, emotional moments, and an incredible cast of side characters. This book captured my heart from the very first page.

Daniel Henning did a fantastic job narrating the audiobook and bringing Domenic to life.

Mileage may vary here. It really depends on what you are in the mood for. If you want a messy, drama filled summer beach read then this is perfect. There is sooo much mess and sooo much drama. It made me a little anxious to be honest. If you are looking for a queer romance to make you swoon, I would look elsewhere or at least go in with lowered expectations.

Don't get me wrong, Dom does find love, but is a secondary plot line, and honestly, the romance failed to make me swoon until the last 20 pages. I think I would have preferred a more romance focused plot because Dom's friends are terrible people and Dom is a doormat. Dom spends nearly every page of this book being walked all over. I wanted to feel bad for him but it was hard. I screamed for him to grow a spine and stand up for himself. Dom is not perfect either. He manages to out someone, which is never something I want to see in a book.

This is a very fast read, and a few characters you meet at the bachelor party stole the show.

The Gay Best Friend follows Dom as his two best friends Kate and Patrick prepare for their wedding. Kate is suspicious of Patrick and asks Dom to keep an eye on him during his bachelor party weekend. While there, Dom runs into fellow groomsman, Bucky, and sparks fly.

While I loved the budding romance, the story is about much more than that. I really enjoyed the friendship between Dom and Patrick and how they were there for each other. I also loved the character growth that Dom had through the book. He started out so unsure of himself and always feeling less than and awkward, and he ended in a much healthier mindset.

Overall, I thought this was a quick and funny read and perfect for summer. It had unexpected depth and I really enjoyed it.

This one was a miss for me. I didn't care for any of the characters nor the predicament they found themselves in.

This book was okay. I didn't particularly enjoy it, as I just didn't like the MC, Dominic.

I feel like I could see what this book was trying to do, but it just didn't quite do it. I didn't like any of the characters in the book, they were all obnoxious. Plus, all the very heteronormative stuff around the wedding and bachelor/bachelorette parties was quite ew, for me at least. Maybe the reason I didn't like this book is more of a me problem than a book problem?

There were a lot of things in this book that were kind of brought up and never dealt with. For example, Dom thinks about why he acts different when he's with different friends; like a bro-dude when he's with his male friends, and more camp and effeminate when he's with his female friends, and he's never able to be himself with either of his friends. But then this never goes anywhere.

TBH, I originally wasn't going to request this book, because I thought it might not be for me, and I think I should have stuck with my gut on this one.

I have just started reading this one, and I'm already laughing at some of the conversations. So I know that I will be enjoying this book.

This book is hysterical, adorable, and all around fun! The writing is sharp and witty but also irreverent at time. It is chaotic and cringe but like a train wreck, you can't look away.

Dom is best friends with the bride because he is childhood best friends with the groom. And there are secrets, a lot of secrets. You watch Dom unravel as he tries to make the most of his best friends wedding.

This book made me laugh and I really enjoyed it!

I voluntarily read an advanced copy of The Gay Best Friend by Nicolas DiDomizio. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you to NetGalley and SOURCEBOOKS Casablanca for this ARC.

This was a fun book, and I loved Dominic and his chaotic adventures during the wedding of his two best friends. I appreciated that all the characters had relatable flaws, which made it easy to care about what happened to everyone. This book was fluffy and perfect for a relaxing vacation read. I give it a solid 4/5 stars.
