Olivia and her nine year old daughter Ellie are trying to get their lives back to normal after Olivia's breakup. They move and are settling in, but Olivia needs someone else in her life. She then meets her next door neighbour Michael and soon they are together constantly, but it doesn't take Olivia long to realize that something is not right between them. This story takes us along on an exciting journey.
I thank the author publisher and Netgalley for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Twisty and gripping and kept me engaged. Parts of this book seemed very familiar to me so it is possible that I have read it before but I don't mind rereads and I still really enjoyed it.
This was my first Kathryn Croft book and I found this book a bit slow to begin with. I kept waiting and thinking something interesting would come along or happen but I did still somewhat enjoy the book as it is well written and creative in points and glad I did stick it out as the ending had a shock factor to it!! I would definitely like to read more of Kathryn's books in the future to see what they are like compared to this one.
Huge thanks to netgalley and canelo for sending me this book in exchange for my honest review
I have read several of books by Kathryn Croft and have to say this one was not up to the standard of some of the others that I have enjoyed.
I felt like I was forever hopeful that something interesting or engaging would happen but it was stagnant and repetitive throughout and predictable to boot I found the main character really frustrating and the ending just disappointed.
I didn't realise until I was halfway through that I had previously read this book under the title 'Behind Closed Doors'. I really enjoy Kathryn Croft novels but typically this was my least favourite read probably why it took me so long to realise.
A psychological thriller about Olivia Taylor, a woman whose marriage has recently finished and is hoping to start a new life with her nine year old daughter, Ellie. But unfortunately things are about to get worse when she meets Michael Crossman.
From reading other peoples reviews it appears I had the same experience as many others, good start and a page turner but then a feeling of disappointment and anti climax.
I fully understand that I can't expect to enjoy every book I read by my favourite authors and will gladly read her next book.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Canelo for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Reading this book is like watching a train wreck in action and you can't look away. It is essentially the story of a woman who becomes obsessed with an awful man and how her life unravels as a result. Olivia is recently separated from her husband Carl and along with her ten year old Ellie, she moves into a lower flat. She is feeling lonely and unsure of herself when she meets the upstairs neighbor Michael. Michael is an awful person and he never really came alive for me as someone real. He provides Olivia with some awesome if violent sex but then ghosts her for weeks or months, is almost always in a bad mood and is a neat freak who doesn't seem to like little Ellie. He also has a sister Chloe who is. a heavy drinker and has many mental issues and who involves herself in his life to an uncomfortable degree. .
Olivia continues to seek Michael out even if her fights with Michael and issues with Chloe and with another man she briefly meets tear her life apart and leave her with no energy to care for her daughter. I found Olivia to be a very neglectful mother and she seemed concerned only with sex. The book is written in a second person narrative which can get annoying after awhile and I think it would have worked just as well in a first person story. The last third of the book becomes a bit scattered with the same things happening over and over and some snippets suggesting Olivia is at a mental health facility at some point. I did not guess the twist at the end but wished it had ended differently. Four stars for original writing and story. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free ARC in exchange for a review.
Olivia is making a new life for herself and her daughter after her divorce. she meets a man and things go bad quickly. I didn't like the ending as it ended abruptly.
Reading thinking this book thinking it would actually go somewhere interesting but it didn't.
Repetitive and a lot of sexfor no reason really seemed to flow around horneyness. Got boring after awhile. Left wondering what happened to certain people in the book as well.
This definitely wasn't interesting or worth my read.
Thanks to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for an early release of this book.
I really enjoyed this book! It hooked me from page one and kept me hooked the entire time. Highly recommend!
Although I found the story a little slow and repetitive, I still enjoyed reading it.
Thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for allowing me an ARC.
Love this book!!! Another utterly gripping story from Kathryn Croft that I really didn't not want to end!
The story is told from the perspective of Olivia, she has recently split from her husband, and along with daughter, Ellie, she moves to a flat where she forms an attraction to the neighbour upstairs, Michael. The narrative is largely as if Olivia were talking to Michael. I don't want to give spoilers so won't say more about the plot, other than to hint that it is twisty, shocking and deliciously dark!
The writing is superb, a real treat to read. As for the story - this one will be with me for a while. Definitely one of the best books I have read this year.
My thanks to NertGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an advance copy.
Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free, electronic ARC of this novel received in exchange for an honest review.

Olivia is crushed after her marriage with the love of her life ended with his infidelity. Left to co-parent her nine old daughter, Olivia is desperate to start over and bring happiness into her, and Ellie’s, life again. When she moves into her new flat, she is eager to make friends but when she is introduced to her upstairs neighbour, Michael, it becomes so much more than that. Soon, Olivia and Michael are in a relationship and after so many years with her ex, who ended up betraying her without her knowledge, Olivia misses all the red flags- including the strained relationship Michael has with his flighty, unstable sister, Chloe. It all comes to an ugly head when Olivia begins to receive threats, threats to herself and to young Ellie. Who means to cause them harm? And, most importantly, why?
“The Neighbour Upstairs” is the newest novel by U.K. author Kathryn Croft. Although I’ve only read one of her previous works, “The Girl You Lost”, I loved it enough to eagerly anticipate getting to read this new story!
The story is told completely from Olivia’s perspective, during the time after the divorce and leading up to when Olivia meets Michael. There are a few snippets scattered throughout where Olivia is narrating from some sort of institution, with very few others around for support (later determined to be a psych ward, although we aren’t given the reason for her admission until the end) but this portion only serves to add more tantalizing suspense to the dramatic plot. The snippets are not separated from other parts of the chapters, and although it was easy to determine where Olivia was narrating from, I would’ve liked to see a more definitive marking (perhaps an italicized script?) to ensure an easier flow.
Each and every character, with the exception of Ellie of course, were not particularly likable. This seemed purposeful, as I had suspicions about each and every one until the very end. Olivia started off to be someone to root for, but once she began a relationship with the neurotic, domineering and controlling Michael, and fell prey to his gaslighting, I felt more pity for her than anything else.
Croft has a way of keeping her readers guessing and the ending definitely took me by surprise. It was heartbreakingly tragic, and supremely discomforting at the same time. Each character and plot line received a firmly cemented end, but there is no way I would’ve come close to guessing the twist in this one. “The Neighbour Upstairs” is suspenseful and creative, which shouldn’t come as a surprise to Croft readers, and it is definitely something that will keep you up at night!
This book just didn't do it for me. Olivia was selfish and insecure. She let Michael treat her horribly and she didn't pay enough attention to her daughter. While I was initially intrigued, the story took a long time to get somewhere. I really didn't like how the story ended. It was so abrupt and didn't give real closure. I was left wondering what happened to Ava, Chloe, and Micheal. I have heard great things about Kathyrn Croft and I would give her another chance, but I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.
I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Normally I absolutely love Kathryn Croft books but this one didn't do it for me. Olivia just came across as a horny hysterical pushover. No characters had any depth to them. It was all just meh.
I am a big fan of Kathryn Croft and have read all of her books, however this did not stop me rereading this excellent psychological thriller.
I loved the dark foreboding atmosphere as Olivia obsesses about the guy upstairs, and there is the ongoing mysyery of why she and her daughter have left her husband. All the characters are believable and its extremely suspenseful and full of drama with an explosive climax.
The Neighbour Upstairs
by Kathryn Croft
Thank you, NetGalley, Canelo, and Kathryn Croft for letting me read “The Neighbour Upstairs” in exchange for an honest review.
I did not really enjoy the book. And the ending, was just that, an abrupt end to the book. I was left feeling, what the hell happened? It really just angered me.
I thought I knew where this was going to end. I even changed my mind as I believe the author wanted me to. But, nothing prepared me for the ending. It's not a "feel good" book, so be prepared for that. The writing style was unusual and I often found it offputting but I couldn't stop reading. Unfinished in just 2 days.
Olivia is making a new life after her divorce with her daughter Olivia. She then meets Michael, from there things go bad.
This was predictable, dull and anti climactic. I hope further books by this author are better.
I really liked the sound of this book, so I was very pleased to have been accepted to read and review it.
Ive managed to read this in a day as I just couldn’t put it down. It had me hooked from the start.
It started off with Olivia meeting her neighbour upstairs. The story is told as though Olivia is writing an account to this neighbour as he’s referred to as ‘you’ through parts of the book. I wasn’t really sure where it was heading but you instantly could tell something was to happen with this neighbour and I couldn’t wait to find out what was going on!
As the book progressed, things really started to get quite tense and I started to really dislike the neighbour. I was getting quite annoyed at Olivia for not being able to see his behaviour was peculiar. Then things started to get really strange and I couldn’t wait to find out what was going on!
The ending had me shocked, when all was revealed! Although I had my suspicions of the storyline I still wasn’t expecting the ending.
Overall an enjoyable thriller!
Thank you NetGalley and Canelo for allowing me to read and review this title.
I just love reading this amazing Author.
