Sarah Shaw is a nurse on duty when the police arrive to tell her that her husband is dead. They had only been married a few months and had met while she was nursing his dying first wife. It appears that William has been murdered and the investigating police officer is Sarah's ex...
The Nurse's Secret is a mix of crime/police procedural and psychological thriller set in the UK.
Sarah is newly widowed and her husband died in suspicious circumstances. She moves in with a colleague but is unsettled by Kathleen's overbearing attitude. However, she shows little emotion as she is numb from the devastating news and the worry about the police investigation. The couple had not been married long and his first wife had only died a few months earlier.
The book is written from three third person perspectives: Sarah, Nick and Charlie. The latter two are detectives and Nick was formerly in a relationship with Sarah which was kept a secret from his friend and mentor Charlie.
Secrets are hinted at throughout the book and gradually revealed. I had forgotten the prologue for the first third of the book and then my brain started racing trying to work out how the events and characters link together. Charlie and Nick have been keeping secrets from each other and this threatens the whole investigation.
I really enjoyed the police procedural elements of the book and felt included in the case thanks to two of the perspectives. There is the forensic detail of the post mortem which is very graphic and may upset some readers. The detectives are affected by this experience which shows us their softer side. In contrast, Sarah's viewpoint focuses more on the psychological elements as she evaluates her relationships.
The Nurse's Secret is a well plotted novel with plenty of secrets to reveal.
A good read with lots of twists and turns. Each chapter told from the point of view of the main characters which I did find a little pointless, I think the book would’ve flowed better with just normal chapters. The conclusion was a little far fetched and unbelievable but on the whole an entertaining read.
I hadn't read any Liz Lawler before, but I enjoyed this one!
I expected it to be a little like The Nurse by J A Corrigan, which I loved!
This had some of the same elements, and had lots of drama later in the book, but was a little muted at the start. The second half was great and I raced to the end.
It's a very quick read, and could easily be read in one sitting!
This is my first book from this author and I am sorry to say I was not enamoured with the story.
Sarah (the nurse with the secret) is in my opinion a dislikeable character, she got on my nerves if I am honest. It got to the point where I could not care less of the secret the storyline was about!!!!
Nick, the leading police detective and Sarah's ex who is still in love with her should come through as a romantic side to the story but felt to me quite pathetic and I love romantic aspects to mystery/murder stories.
Sorry but it did not work for me...
The Nurse's Secret by Liz Lawler Narrated by: Sarah Durham and Length: 11 hrs and 7 mins was an enjoyable audiobook I was gripped from the beginning till the end and was a great book to listen to whilst doing your favourite hobby - Crocheting. This was a psychological thriller, which is fast paced with great twists and I found it hard to turn it off. Liz's books are always a great read and this one was no different I loved it especially all the characters were brilliant.
The narrator Sarah Durham was excellent.
This was a bit of a tedious read. It is so slow going until the end where it suddenly picks up enough speed to wrap everything up in about 2 chapters. I also wasn’t a fan of Sarah and was kind of hoping she was the killer to make her less of a pushover. Nick was also pathetic and so immature. I think the only characters that I did like were Charlie and Joe. Normally Liz’s reveals are exciting but this one, although sad, was predictable and a bit of a letdown.
I received a copy of the ebook via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
Sara is a well respected nurse. One night her shift is interrupted by the arrival of the police to tell her that her husband is dead. He was shot in his bed. They have only been married a short while & Sara is in shock. Her workmate Kathleen takes her home while the police investigate. In charge of the investigation is Nick, who is Sara's ex although he wants to make sure no-one knows this apart from his friend & co-worker Charlie. Nick has no intention of letting anyone else investigate. The story is told by Sara, Nick & Charlie. Charlie was the only one I really warmed to as I didn't trust Nick & felt quite irritated with Sara- how did she put up with Kathleen for so long ( I did like Kathleen's husband Joe- a saint if ever there was one!)
I found this quite slow going until suddenly it hurtled forward with revelation after revelation. It was an OK read but not as good as expected. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book
Sarah,a competent respected Nurse has recently married William Shaw. William has been getting anonymous letters and calls lately,so when Sarah tries to check in with Jim from her shift, there's no answer. Increasingly worried, she calls the police to do a welfare check at her home. There they find William,dead...a gun shot in the mouth. Sarahs distraught and her colleague Kathleen suggests she stays with her for the time being.
There's alot to like about this book and while it slows a little in places, the start itself will grab you...and the end reveals all. Everyone's hiding something in the good psychological thriller.
BLOG TOUR REVIEW
Review for 'The Nurse's Secret' by Liz Lawler.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 31st October 2022.
This is the second book that I have read by this author. I have also read 'The Next Wife' which I would also highly recommend.
I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching cover and intriguing synopsis. I am also a huge fan of Liz Lawler and if this book is half as good as 'The Next Wife' it is guaranteed to be a page turner. The synopsis stated that this book is 'An addictive psychological thriller that will have you glued to the pages until the final shocking twist. Perfect for fans of K.L. Slater, Shari Lapena and Clare Mackintosh.' I am a massive fan of K.L Slater and Shari Lapena so am looking forward to see if it lives up to this statement. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of a prologue and 66 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in Bath, England , UK 🇬🇧 . I always enjoy when books are set in the UK as I'm from Wales and have sometimes visited areas mentioned in the book. This makes it easier to picture the scenes. I have, in fact, visited Bath so am hoping to be able to set the scenes smoother in my head.
This book is written in third person perspective and the main protagonists are Sarah Shaw, Nick and Charlie. The benefits of books written in third person with several protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.
This book is extremely well written and the fantastic descriptions definitely add to the dark atmosphere. The synopsis and the cover worked very well with the plot. I am most definitely looking forward to reading more books by this very talented author.
The storyline is extremely compelling and addictive as well as very dark. It was a slow burner but starts picking up later on in the book. It is character driven and has a fantastic mix of medical and police procedurals. It is filled with secrets, tension and a fantastic twist that the book builds up to. The fact that Liz has done her research so a huge WELL DONE to Liz as its a huge disappointment when authors don't do any or enough research into their subject and the book is then littered with unnecessary mistakes. I enjoyed that we get to see the perspectives from three characters with two being detectives and one a nurse. It is an intriguing and compelling read that will keep you guessing throughout.
This is only the third book that I have listened 100% on Audiobook. If I listen to a book on audiobook I usually also read the physical book between but for the third time I listened to the whole book and I was impressed! I must say a HUGE congratulations to the narrator Sarah Durham who did a great job bringing this story to life. I would listen to it in the car and while walking at any opportunity and Amalia did a fantastic job on both male and female characters voices!!! I'm not only looking forward to reading more books by Liz but also to listening to more books narrated by Sarah!
The characters all played their roles very well. Each of the characters seem to have their own hidden secrets that I was intrigued to discover. I was never sure who I should or shouldn't trust throughout. I had mixed feelings on the characters but whether I liked them or not they all work perfectly together to make this such a page turning read.
Make sure you read to the very end of the book to read an excerpt of Liz's absolutely gripping 'The Next Wife' which is another addictive page turner and one I have read myself and would highly recommend!!
Overall an intriguing and page turning medical and police thriller.
Genres covered in this novel include Mystery, Suspense, Thriller, Psychological Fiction, Drama, Medical Thriller, Police Procedural, Women's Crime Fiction and Psychological Thriller amongst others.
I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of K.L. Slater, Shari Lapena and Clare Mackintosh.
368 pages/11 hours 7 minutes.
This book is £1.99 to purchase on kindle, free on kindle unlimited, £20.03 on audiobook and £9.99 in paperback at time of review via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!
Rated 4/5 (I enjoyed it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

I received this book via NetGalley and give it my honest opinion
Although this book was slow to begin with, by the end it was gripping. I enjoyed it, it is not my normal read but I will be reading more by Liz Lawler as I quite liked the writing style.
Sarah is a well qualified nurse and is beside herself when she can’t reach her husband on the phone, so she calls the police to check on him. She is shocked and devastated to learn that the police have found her husband William dead. Of course Sarah becomes a suspect, and the investigating officer jumps in quickly to prove her innocence while trying to find the killer. His name is Nick and he is Sarah’s ex. He doesn’t let on that he was formerly involved with Sarah because the conflict of interest would get him removed from the case.
Nick is not he only one holding secrets in this story. Sarah has a secret as well. She is definitely hiding something. As Sarah‘s home is now a crime scene, she has nowhere to go. Fortunately, coworker and fellow nurse Kathleen opens her home to Sarah. Unfortunately, Sarah is more than uncomfortable with Kathleen’s escalating creepy behavior. This takes this murder mystery into an additional interesting direction.
Everyone is hiding something in this exciting latest book by Liz Lawler. While the secrets are becoming exposed one by one, there is a huge twist as the story begins to draw to a close. I loved The Nurse’s Secret as it was an intriguing and compelling read.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Told from several different POV, The Nurse's Secret is a cleverly plotted psychological thriller/police procedural. It's a slow starter that soon picks up pace. Definitely very compelling and full of twists and turns that had me on high alert throughout incase I missed anything.
Sarah was definitely an interesting character wasn't she, not only was she a liar, she wasn't very nice either and I took an instant dislike to her, but needed to know what the extent of her secrets and lies were.
Overall, it's an entertaining, engaging one sitting read and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Many thanks to Bookouture for my tour spot.
Rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐
One night while working her shift at the hospital, Sarah Shaw is nervous when she can't reach her husband William. They've only been married a few short months, but in that time he received many threatening notes and phone calls. But when the police discover him dead by suspicious circumstances, they start to question Sarah. Nick, returned from London after fleeing a bad breakup is the detective in charge of the case along with longtime policeman Charlie. This case could make his career so he reluctant to share his previous connection to Sarah. Add in the creepy and overprotective fellow nurse that takes Sarah in during the investigation and it seems that everyone in the story is hiding secrets.
This book was slow at first setting up the backstory and all the plot points and twists and even after finishing the book I'm still confused about a few things I felt were dropped. Overall just an ok read for me.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Absolutely incredible! It’s an accomplished psychological thriller that you get completely immersed in with a totally unexpected ending.
This was a very slow read and had quite a lot of characters which was confusing at times. It took until over halfway through before it got interesting which is a shame. This could have been an exciting read but, it didn’t hit the spot for me. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
Sarah has recently married William; she is a respected nurse and William Shaw is dead, shot in the mouth and found in their home. He had been receiving anonymous calls and letters. The police speak to Sarah and send DS Charlie Bowden Charlie a veteran police sergeant who is pleased to see the return of DI Nick Anderson after he fled to London a year ago without so much as a by-your-leave. Now he is back and heading up the investigation into William's apparent murder. Another nurse, Kathleen takes in Sarah to help her, but Sarah doesn't seem like a typical grieving widow...
The story unfolds after the attention-grabbing prologue which immediately set my cogs whirring. A great read with an unpredictable ending.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel from Bookouture via NetGalley at my request and this review is my own unbiased opinion.
Unfortunately The Nurse's Secret did not work for me. I found it to be drawn out and slow with totally unlikeable characters. I found it really hard to follow and I just could not get into it like I hoped I would from the description.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC.
This one was painfully slow with unlikable characters and I ended up not finishing it after 33%. I listened to the audiobook but didn’t like the narrator, I’m used to narrators doing different voices for characters and this was all monotonous. This would not be a book I would recommend as it wasn’t for me but I’m sure others will enjoy it.
A slow burn mystery with characters that are hard to like, but a few deaths I needed to know who the killer was. I know in most thrillers, the characters are harboring secrets, but wow, the characters in this one definitely had more than their share of them.
This one will definitely keep you guessing. I got a little bogged down in the story when it wasn’t focused on the police, but really enjoyed both Nick and Charlie’s investigation styles.
I flipped back and forth between the book and audiobook and thought Sarah Durham was engaging as the narrator.
If you love slow burn murder mysteries, then you should pick this one up.
This sounded like a great book. Murder, medical, and mystery all wrapped in one book. Unfortunately, I just couldn’t get into this book. As a nurse myself, I found the main character unbelievable. I had a hard time liking the characters and this ended up being a DNF for me. Thank you to net galley and the publisher for an ARC
