Interesting plot twist, just when I thought I had it figured out. Honestly, the MC got on my nerves but she was young so what can you expect? Another lesson of, be careful who you marry!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for my honest opinion.
I enjoyed this psychological thriller, which was wonderfully narrated, and which kept me interested throughout.
The story focuses on Anna, and experiences that she had with her ex boyfriend in the past, which are now catching up with her in the present day. The book goes back and forwards between the past and the present, which I liked.
Anna's ex boyfriend, Anna's close friend and Anna's husband are all around her, but who is the one who is causing her to live in fear? You will have to read the book to find out! Highly recommended!
Many thanks to the author, narrator, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.
ARC audiobook provided by NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
“The Millionaire's Wife” is a mystery/thriller led by the titular protagonist, Anna Blackwell. Anna married into wealth, namely her husband, Will, and together they have lived a happy and comfortable life. The story begins with two timelines, following Anna’s life in both the past and the present. As the timelines draw nearer, it becomes apparent that life hasn’t always been perfect for Anna. She is haunted by her past life with her ex-boyfriend, Finn. That past has led to many secrets which she has kept well hidden. Until now.
A woman has been murdered, and Anna knows who is responsible. Anna’s past and the present collide, leaving her faced with some tough decisions. Should she reveal her secrets to Will? Who can she turn to for help? Who can she trust? Is she next? One thing is for certain: Anna has to stop Finn before it’s too late, no matter what the cost. The thing is, Anna isn’t the only one who’s been keeping secrets.
This was a great twisty novel that held quite a few surprises along the way. The author has an easy, engaging writing style that kept me invested in the story from beginning to end. The general plot outline for this book makes it sound as if it is just another formulaic thriller, but the author’s take was fresh and original. The characters are well-developed and likeable, making the twists and turns throughout the book that much more surprising. I’m usually good at guessing the twists in a book, but I was pleasantly surprised with this novel. The pace of the book was good, not dragging anywhere, and the ending was satisfying.
My copy of this was an audiobook, so I must also comment on the narrator. I thought she did an excellent job. I frankly hate it when a narrator does a poor character voice that just pulls me right out of a book. This narrator did an excellent job with both male and female voices, allowing me to become immersed in the story. Her narrative pace and intonation were also done very well. I would definitely listen to other books narrated by her.
Overall, this was a great mystery/thriller that I ripped through in roughly a day. Based on this book, I will be looking into this author’s back catalog to delve into more of her writing. I highly recommend this book for fans of mysteries, thrillers, and fiction in general, as well as readers new to these genres. I also recommend this book in both audiobook and written formats. If you’re looking for a fast-paced, engaging, original story that will be sure to give you a few surprises along the way, look no further.
Many thanks to netgalley and Bookouture audio for my ALC.
Can you ever really know the ones you love?
After seeing a news report about the death of a woman on the other side of the world, Anna Blackwell realises that her past has caught up with her. That her greatest fear is about to come true. That it’s her turn next.
I enjoyed the writing style, it was starting to become very entertaining. Unfortunately some of the scenes were a little too far fetched and unbelievable for me.
This was my first book by this author, and while the book overall didn't work for me, I'm looking forward to reading what she comes out with next.
When Anna sees the news about a woman who has recently been murdered, she knows her past will be knocking on her door very soon. And it does.
This was a great book to listen to on audio. I think the narration definitely assisted to bring out the twistiness of the book. I do feel a lot of the situations were a bit OTT though and this is probably why it isn't one of my faves by this author. It is still an intriguing read and I was keen to get to the end to see what happened.
In 2017, Anna Blackwell is happily married to Will and enjoying a comfortable life. Her best friend, Sian, is engaged to Will's best friend, Remy. The two couples do everything together. Anna is enjoying her life but at Will's birthday party, her past comes back to haunt her. Can her past rob her of this wonderful life she has now? This story is told in the present (2017) and flashes back to Anna's past. It builds the story of Anna and how she got where she is today.
I listened to the audiobook and didn't want to stop listening. The narrator, Katie Villa, is fantastic. Are people we love really who we think they are? This book will keep you coming back to find out what will happen in Anna's life. Thank you to NetGalley, Shani Boland and Adrenalin Books for the audiobook copy of this book.
The Millionaire's Wife By: Shalini Boland and Narrated by: Katie Villa was brilliant from the beginning till the end with Great twists and turns throughout. I did start to read this book when it first came out But I could not get into it. So I was pleased to get a chance to listen to this audiobook from Bookouture. I loved it.
The Narrator Kate Villa was excellent throughout, One of the best Narrators out there.
Big Thank you to #NetGalley and #Bookouture audio for supplying me with a copy of The Millionaire's Wife in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you Bookouture Audio and Netgalley for this audio. Unfortunately was not the autor best book. I feel terrible with drama of the main character. So impossible dilemas, but maybe not disturbing for many people. I am so sorry I could not enjoy more and I hope the next one I read will work me better. Thank you Farah for reading/listening together.
The Millionaire’s Wife starts off with intrigue and suspense. I had an audio version and I found myself speeding up the reading speed because I had to know how it ended. Overall, I felt the ending fell a little flat. Ironically, it’s an ending I’ve always felt is realistic but then reading it play out I was disappointed because I wanted more. All in all, it is an interesting take on moving ahead in life. Too prevent spoilers I’ll let the reader find out what that means!
When Anna moved from Sweden to the UK her and Sean became instant friends. When Anna‘s parents announced that after graduation they were moving back to Sweden and do to her excellent a levels wanted her to attend college there she moved in with Finn instead. They both worked part time jobs and live in a Studio apartment and can barely make ends meet. He worked at a surf shop and couldn’t hide his hate and distain for the rich guys that go in and spend money like it’s no big deal. But when he and Anna get life-changing news his reaction finally causes Anna to see him for the abusive delusional man he is. Thankfully Sean was there to help her pick up the pieces and after a trip back to Sweden she’s back in her life couldn’t be better. She is married to Will a kind loving man who happens to be rich but when she gets a text from Finn it throws her life back into the chaos she thought she escaped. Now let me just say there’s a few parts in this book where you will be rolling your eyes and think “really,“ but it’s written so well that you don’t realize the absurdity until it’s over. I have a real pet peeve of story lines that aren’t plausible and this has a little bit of an plausibility but I was listening to this book until way after midnight. That’s big plot points I didn’t mention in my summary because I didn’t know them going into the story and it made it that much better so I don’t want to ruin it but this book was so good. It’s books or escapism this one is top shelf the narrator was so good she did all the voices perfectly and had great character distinction even male and female. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. I received this book from NetGalley and the publisher but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
This is second audiobook of Shalini Boland's that I’ve had the pleasure of listening to and I’m looking forward to reading more from her.
I like her writing style and find that her books keep me on the edge of my seat. There were twists and turns throughout as Anna weaved herself into a web of deceit by keeping secrets. But her keeping her silence catches up with her and has her on the brink of losing her one main love.
Anna’s inability to have the courage to be open and honest with her husband was a character flaw that I found to be so frustrating. I wanted to give her a good shaking!
Narration by Katie Villa was superb adding to my listening enjoyment and had me finishing the book in one sitting!
I am grateful to #NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for the pleasure of receiving this ARC. This opinion is my own.
This was a great, quick and twisty thriller.
I definitely feel like more depth could have been added to Ana’s current relationship, I loved the dual timeline at the beginning of the book and would have loved this to have continued further through. Some of the side characters would have benefitted from some more depth as well, really building on their relationships as they are adults as the early years are done well.
I enjoyed this and the ending was good too - not the oh my god I can’t believe twist/shock I love in a thriller but also not disappointing. It all tied up very nicely.
I would recommend if you want to read a quick, good thriller.
Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture Audio and Shalini Boland for letting me listen to the audio book “The Millionaire’s Wife”, read by Katie Villa. Released on September 19th 2022.
I am torn. Realistically I should not like it, the irrational side of me at this up: but let’s go in order ….
First I have to say that I am not the typical audio book Listener. I am a reader, as in text please. But I wanted to give it another try. I had some previous audiobooks that I abandoned because I could not stand the voice. Plus I fall asleep easily when listening. 😅
But I have to say, I really really enjoyed being read to by Katie Villa. She has the right voice for me, with the right accents. I enjoyed it. Her reading is very clear and understandable. Not over done. It felt natural listening to her. So the voice gets 4/5 ⭐️.
I also liked that I had the option to speed up, and it’s still understandable at maximum speed. I read quite fast, so even maximum speed felt slow at times, but easy enough to keep up. 3.75/5⭐️
I think it’s a matter of taste, having the male dialogue read by a female. It would be different if it was first persons dialogue. The change in the voice was subtle enough, you could make out the different characters easily. It was ok, but I was not too excited. Sometimes I missed the emotions. I imagined them differently than they were portrayed. But oh well, maybe I am after all a reader and not a listener. I have to add, I was reading along on my kindle, makes it easier for me to comprehend. But that’s my personal preference.
I guess the overall narration is 3,75/5 ⭐️ for me, without taking the story into consideration. I am just not the typical audio book listener, too slow for me. But that’s my problem and not the narrators fault.
What I kept wondering, wasn’t the younger Anna having any Swedish accent, having moved to England only two years prior? Still she was narrated with an English accent. She explains she had no trace of an accent anymore, but it felt weird to me. I wish I could get rid of my accents that easily (German living in Finland)…Ok, I am overthinking. Ignore me.
This is my first book by Shalini Boland and I was really excited! Was i blown away!? Unfortunately not, but that does not mean I did not have a good time. Was the book believable and realistic? No sir. It went haha in the end and should have toppled off the cliff with Will and Fin. But again, does not mean I did not enjoy it. Who cares for realism? That’s why I read books. Reality, I have my life. Sometimes it gets so ridiculous, that it’s good. So I was totally fine with it, it was what I needed.
Synopsis:
The Prologue gives it already to us, a murder that could have gotten away as an accident?! We don’t know yet. Lots of questions, little answers.
Then we meet our heroine Anna, who moved from Sweden to England as a teenager. In the present day, we find out that the murder is connected to her. It’s her husbands birthday party and she receives a picture of a dead woman. What and how?!
The timeline jumps between now and then: we get glimpses of teenage Anna and her budding first love with a bad boy/loser. These days she is married to wealthy Will. Anna knows that her ex Fin is behind the threads. Will she be able to protect her secrets? Will her marriage survive, heck, will she survive?
Anna was naive to the point that she annoyed me at times. I wanted to shake sense into her. Wake up girl! Get out of la-la-land. And to be honest I was pissed at her for supposedly not having an accent. What a Petty Betty I am. 😳😜
Story was bonkers but I stuck with it. Not my favourite but I will give Shalini Boland another try.
This book absolutely blew me away. It was so twisty and turny and I never saw any of it coming! I listened on audio, and between the writing and the narrator, it was a page turner for sure! Giving it 4.5 stars because there were a few things in the plot that were definitely not believable — but overall it was a fantastic read!
Thank you for the ARC. I listened to this in one go with no breaks. It just flowed. I loved the narrator and the story.
If you’ve read any of Shalini Boland’s books, you know that things are going to build up for an explosive ending. And that’s definitely the case again here! I was a riveted listener to the very end as everything built up and got torn down. So many secrets, so many lies! I don’t want to mention any specifics because these books are best when you go in blind.
*Thanks to Bookoutre and NetGalley for the audio copy to review
Unfortunately, this one just wasn’t for me. I found it too unbelievable and the story just fell short.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for an advanced audio copy.
The Millionaire's Wife had me on the edge of my seat from its brutal start all the way to its conclusion.
The story follows Anna over the last decade of her life. It starts in the present day when we find out the brutal murder from the opening of the book has a link to Anna. She knows who the killer is and it’s her ex-boyfriend. The story then Goes back and forth between the past and present-day to get you up to speed on Anna’s past and her ex.
The story lays it all out there for you and makes it seem like the book will be predictable but then it hits you with a twist around the halfway mark that I did not see coming and I absolutely loved it. After that twist, we start the denouement which was satisfying but I really expected one more big twist. I love the twist we got, but with it coming so early I was expecting something else significant that never came. It still has an excellent conclusion and I would highly recommend This book.
I give this 4 stars! It was awesome especially the ending! The pacing was really good for this storyline and the characters were pretty good too. The only criticism I have for this is how annoying and indecisive Anna was at times but besides that it was great. I love Psychological Thrillers :)
Although The Millionaire's Wife is 5 years old, a new audio version releases this month and I was lucky enough to get an ARC from Netgalley. Full disclosure, I am a Shalini Boland fan and have read and enjoyed 9 of her previous books; this one did not disappoint.
The Millionaire's Wife is a solid psychological thriller featuring an intelligent, but foolish, Anna, and a past that comes back to haunt her. I cannot say the one line I want to say because it will be too much info and ruin the journey for you - so I'll just say, this one was unputdownable and I listened to the whole thing over the course of a day.
As to the audio part of the review, Katie Villa is establishing herself as an exceptional reader and her stories are well done. She has a distinctive, warm tenor and manages to voice both hardened criminals and hurting moms with the same level of believably.
Thank you to Bookouture Audio and Netgalley for allowing me to listen in advance.
