WoW!!! What can I say, yet another fantastic book in the Danny Flint series by Trev Negus.

I absolutely LOVE this series, which is gripping, keeps you on your toes and always a great twist storyline.

The Danny Flint series is especially a great series to read if you are from the Nottingham / Mansfield area. You won't be disappointed.

I can wait to read the 9th book in the series.

Thank you Trev for another amazing read.

Part of a series, though it reads fine as a stand alone. Set in the 80's, without the most modern forensic techniques, the old fashioned detection is interesting and makes a change from more modern techniques of using the internet and mobile phones. The plot is quite drawn out, perhaps a little too much, though is intricate and clever, not in a showy way, just interesting. There are a couple of twists in the story which also had a very sad aspect (other than the deaths) which does reflect on life in the UK for immigrants.

The story starts off with six bodies found dead after what appears to be a poisoning. Nobody know how and why they've been targeted if that's the case.
DCI Flint and his team are to carry on the investigation and put an end to this from happening again.
I enjoyed previous books by the author and this shows once again why I like to read so many police investigations series. You can never know what you'll get through a case and the suspense is always so addictive.
The story is told in more voices, even the villain one and that's always a highlight for me because I want o know what drives them to act and do the things they do. I knew that some plants can be toxic and deadly but to what extend and some people are using it to cause harm , was really interesting to read about.
Looking forward to see on which adventure is the author taking these characters.

Grateful to the publisher for my review copy through Netgalley

The Devil's Breath by Trevor Negus.
DCI Danny Flint Book 8.
Nottingham, 1988. A family of four are found dead in their home, killed by a deadly toxin.
A few days later, an elderly couple are murdered. Also poisoned. DCI Flint and his team are tasked with finding the killer. They quickly establish that the victims have a single, tenuous link - both families bought groceries from the same supermarket. It’s the ultimate investigative nightmare – someone is poisoning food on a seemingly random basis. But why? Are they killing for pleasure? Or do they have some other motive?
Really enjoyable read. Liked Flint. Twisty. Had no clue who it was. 4*.

In 1988 a family of four was found in their home dead. Few days later a elderly couple were found murdered.
Dci and Flint are asked to investigate these murders? What are they going to find?
Flint realizes he’s in a deadly race against time – if he doesn’t catch the killer quickly, more innocent people will die. What will happen with the people in the supermarket?
Great story line, quick read, highly recommend reading.

This is #8 in the DCI Danny Flint series but can easily be read as a standalone.

The story starts 16 years previously, when a well-to-do family was expelled from Uganda and had to make a new life in the UK. All went well for a while, then their business started to suffer due to a huge chain supermarket being built near their corner shop.

Fast forward to 1988 (the ‘current day’ of the story) and a family of four are found dead in their home, and they turn out to have been poisoned. DCI Danny Flint and his team start to work on the case when an elderly couple are found dead in their home, apparently poisoned by the same thing as the young family.

Now it’s a race against time for Danny and his officers to find the killer before anyone else suffers.

Another brilliant instalment from Trevor Negus who has fast become one of my favourite crime writers. I really enjoyed this book and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

Thank you to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for an advance reader copy in return for an honest review.

The Devil’s Breath has a carefully constructed and interesting plot. In some parts of the story, I really enjoyed the detailed development. But in other parts (particularly early on), it felt a little too bogged down in detail.

This is obviously part of a series, and I have not read any of the other installments. As a result, some of the reoccurring characters felt underdeveloped to me. But the characters specific to this volume were better described and robust.

Toward the end of the book, the action really picked up and I felt compelled to keep reading and see what would happen. The ending was satisfying, albeit a bit predictable. No real twists or surprises here. Just a well written, neatly concluded story. It’s a good choice for those who enjoy police procedurals or a well planned heist!

Many thanks to Inkubator Books, and NetGalley, for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of The Devil's Breath.

When six people are found to have been killed by a deadly toxin, DCI Flint and his team are tasked with finding the killer. But, how to even begin? The poisoner could be anyone and the poison anywhere.

The Devil's Breath primarily takes place in 1988 and gives the viewpoint of, not only DCI Flint and his team, but also the poisoner, and the manager of the superstore that's being targeted. All three were interesting to read. Also interesting was how the toxin was created from the flowers of a plant known as Devil's Breath (or “borrachero”) shrub.

I didn't enjoy reading this book as much as other reviewers have. Perhaps that was due to the fact that #8 in the series was the first book I'd read. As it was, I felt The Devil's Breath plodded along with too much detail. Maybe if I had started with #1 of the series I would have been more used to how the author writes. Still, it was an interesting read.

Oh wow! This book really blew me away. I was absolutely not expecting such an insane story, and yet one that is so steeped in reality. This had me hooked. I loved the complex storyline and the split narrative. It's just a really well written thriller that is even more terrifying since we all know that that is something people have yried to do in the past. Absolutely recommend n can't wait to read more of the authors back catalogue

Oh my, how twisted can one person be?

DCI Flint and his team respond to a call of four people found dead. Two are adults and two are children. The pathologist indicates poison. It turns out to be scopolamine. It is a product of a rather rare plant.

Before long, two more people are poisoned. This time it was an elderly couple. How many more? It must stop.

The book is interspersed with vignettes of the story of the poisoner. How they got to this point, their plans and so on. It is a very interesting story. I won’t pretend to feel any sympathy for the individual, but it was fascinating to see how they got to the point of poisoning total strangers.

The book also includes the story of the manager who is in charge of the superstore that is being targeted. Also interesting. This book is very well written as are all of Mr. Negus’ novels. This is a brilliantly written police procedural. It details the investigation without being overly wordy. I will continue to read Mr. Negus’ books.

I want to thank NetGalley and Inkubator Books for forwarding to me a copy of this engrossing book for me to read, enjoy and review. The opinions expressed here are solely my own.

The story starts with a wealthy and educated Asian family being forcibly expelled from Uganda in 1972, who go to Britain, only to find that their circumstances are very different to the opulent life they led in Uganda.

In 1988, in Nottingham, a family is found dead in their house, killed by a mystery toxin. Just a few days later, an elderly couple are found dead in their home, also with the same signs that show that the same poison was used.

The race is on to find what actually killed these people and why.

A local supermarket manager receives threats in the mail, which he discounts as a hoax. Then, the Head Office receives the same letter which is handed over to the Police.

Through sensible Police work, the motive for the killings is exposed.

This is the first time I have read a book by this author, and definitely want to read more by him!!
What a fabulous book! Kept me engaged from the first page. I just could not wait to see what comes next.
The plot was well thought out, and the writing just flowed so perfectly.

Many thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Inkubator Books for an advance copy of The Devil’s Breath, the eighth novel to feature DCI Danny Flint of Nottinghamshire Police’s Major Crime Investigation Unit, set in 1988.

A family of four is found dead in their home and then an elderly couple is found in similar circumstances. Both families have been poisoned and the big question on Danny’s mind is why. That question is quickly answered when the local supermarket receives an extortion letter.

I must admit that I didn’t find The Devil’s Breath exciting or absorbing and don’t rank it as one of the better reads in the series. I didn’t find the subject matter particularly interesting, but full credit to the author for picking something relevant to the era in his plot. I know that younger readers will find it hard to believe, but product tampering for extortion purposes was a problem back then.

The novel is told from two points of view, the investigators and the poisoner, and as the poisoner is named and his intentions and actions are all laid out early in the novel the reader gets the catch up from Danny and his team. I much prefer a novel with an unnamed and fairly invisible killer that gets me involved and keeps me guessing. Having said that the investigation is well organised and fairly fast moving as they try to prevent more death. It also seems relatively realistic.

The Devil’s Breath is not to my taste, but it’s a solid procedural that will appeal to many readers.

A Plethora Of Poisoning…
The eighth in the DCI Danny Flint series finds the detective and his team with a plethora of poisoning on their patch. The only link that can be found between victims relates to their shopping habits - they all shop at the same supermarket. A letter will soon be received that will begin to shed some light on the bizarre and tragic series of events. Another immersive outing in the series with a credible and well crafted cast of characters, a compelling narrative and an unpredictable storyline.
