Very fast read. I enjoyed this more than a Good Girl's Guide. Interesting characters and a lot of twists.
I read this entire book in one sitting. This book was nonstop engaging. However, I did struggle at times with the characters, due to not really rooting for any of them. Despite not enjoying the characters, I still could not stop myself from devouring the book to find out the plot twists.
Meh, this one was just ok. I normally really like a closed door thriller but I didn’t love these characters. It was entertaining but not anything that will stick with me. Thank you netgalley for my free copy.
This was okay, definitely not my favorite from Holly Jackson. The story was interesting but I didn't particularly feel myself rooting for anyone and it felt really unrealistic at times. I understood the conclusion but it felt a little far-fetched. Three stars because I loved the writing and the setting.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I LOVED AGGGTM by this author and saw some amazing reviews so I was super excited to get my hands on this one! Unfortunately I think my expectations were a little too high and I’m in the minority for this one
This book was easy to get into which made it fun on audio, and the second half was way more action packed than the first half! I found myself just waiting for something to happen in the first half and then everything was happening all at once.
I liked the ending! I think everything wrapped up pretty well but there was just something missing, I think maybe if we got to see more of certain characters I would have enjoyed it more —Overall I thought it was fun read but it didn’t quite hook me like AGGGTM did!
I don't think that reading this with my eye is working. So since that's the case when I can get the audio book I will because this is interesting to me but I just can't get into it reading without someone tell me the story so since that's the case I'll be waiting 4 weeks to get the audio book and give a full review because I'll read along side it. Okay it's 7/6 and I finally listened to the book. This was crazy and so entertaining. I would recommend this to everyone. Also make this a movie please. I will watch it if no one else will.
I absolutely LOVED AGGGTM from Holly Jackson so I was super excited to read this one. Unfortunately, it fell just a bit below the mark for me. I did really enjoy the twists and I felt for Red with the loss of her mother. Overall a decent read but won't go down as one of my favorites.
I've really tried with this one, after loving Holly Jackson's previous series, but it felt written by someone else.
It was so repetitive, messy, not organized at all? I couldn't get past the first few chapters. A miss, was not expecting it by this author.
Another super fun teen Mystery Thriller from Ms. Jackson, a mandatory purchase for all libraries especially for those looking to better engage with teen readers
If you’re claustrophobic, I don’t think you would like this book. Everything takes place in the walls of a 31 foot RV. I love how Holly Jackson is able to write a mystery that is intriguing to adults, but is still approachable for teens. I think the characters in this were very well-rounded, although I did have an issue telling the boys apart and I felt like Simon was not really a necessary character. I also liked how their stories slowly unraveled instead of being an info dump. I think the final reveal at the ending was in equal parts expected and unexpected, depending on what part you’re talking about. Some of their interaction was a bit more adult conversation than a typical teen would have: they sounded more like a Gilmore girl teens than actual teens. But I find that’s common in YA lit—adults are writing it after all and it’s not like you can tell much of a story in random TikTok quotes and saying “bet” every other sentence. This was a solid teen mystery with a satisfactory payoff and, best of all, it’s a one-off!!! We stan a stand-alone!
Five Survive had a lot of potential. I liked the closed room aspect of them being trapped on the RV as it added to the tension and helped ramp up everyone's paranoia. I think Holly Jackson did a good job of creating this premise of this group of teenagers being stalked by a sniper and with keeping things moving at a quick pace. I like my thrillers to be fast paced and exciting and I think this definitely did that.
I think my problem lies with the conclusion of the mystery, I found it a little over the top and just not conceivable. It didn't work for me and therefore I had to deduct some points. I also never really warmed to Red as a character, I found her incredibly frustrating.
I wanted to read Holly Jackson's newest book ever since I heard about it! Unfortunately this lacks so much of what I enjoy about her initial series, a likeable protagonist, an interesting mystery, and a cool format. This one fell flat for me.
What a wild ride! Holly Jackson continues to come through with the thrillers. I was on the edge of my seat and finished this thriller in just two days.
It did start off a tad bit slow, with getting to know the six individuals in the RV, and how they all knew each other. However once they get stuck on the road and the sniper comes out it was a whirlwind of action.
The characters in the book are hard to like, they have some serious flaws, but that is not a problem for me, I love some good unlikable characters! Oliver was my least favorite, I hated how he treated pretty much everyone. Red is the main character and sometimes a little flighty. But overall they're a good mix of people, all with secrets.
I thought the ending was good, and satisfying.
Short synopsis: Red and her friends are on a road trip in an RV when the tires get shot out, and a voice on a walkie-talkie demands secrets to be told.
My thoughts. This was an entertaining read, although somewhat predictable imo. Totally bingable, but also somewhat forgettable. I do feel like the ending came a little too quickly and was quite descriptive for a YA read. But the ending dispatch call, letter, and newspaper article were a nice touch.
I liked Red as a character, and all her backstory being told as the night progressed. I also enjoyed the other 5 characters and some I liked to hate.
Read if you love:
- Locked room suspense
- Secrets
- Spring break trips gone wrong
- Tragic backstories
- Characters to like and hate
Another great hit by Holly Jackson. It’s gripping with lots of twists and turns, but at my acceptable level of YA thriller (I’m a chicken.) I’d highly recommend it.
The book follows six friends who are road tripping across the US and find themselves lost and cut off from civilization. It doesn’t take long for them to realize that there is a trained sniper responsible for their isolation, and that they weren’t chosen by chance. One of them is hiding a secret that the sniper is willing to kill for. It’s up to them to find out who and what it is.
As with most thriller/mystery novels, the book has a few twists and turns that it throws your way. It also has a fast pace style of narration, so it’s almost guaranteed to keep your attention throughout. My main gripe with the plot was that I felt a lot of the twists were predictable and I spent most of the book being incredibly annoyed at one particular character. You know how oftentimes with isolation plots, there’s one or two characters that are despicable throughout the entire thing? This book has one of those and I couldn’t, for the life of me, understand why everyone else kept putting up with them. You’re all about to die, have some agency for crying out loud!
Honestly, due to my annoyance at how the characters were behaving, I was set to give this book 3 stars. It was the ending of the book that really got to me and resulted in the higher rating. Holly Jackson is an incredible writer, and she knew exactly how to pull on my heart strings in the final few chapters. This isn’t a book with likable characters, but it is a book that will get your heart racing in some of the best ways possible.
I may not have enjoyed this as much as A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, but I would definitely recommend this for fans of YA thrillers, particularly ones with unreliable narrators and plots involving being cut off from the rest of the world.
Call Jackson is one of my favorite YA mystery authors. Her books always hold your attention and give a little bit of a throwback to a good old fashion RL Stine, teen scream. This book is no different. While the beginning starts a little slow, it definitely ramps up a few chapters in. The main character red her mother was murdered, and since then read has a hard time with warm family dynamics. Rod and her friends go on an RV journey to the gulf Shores for a little fun in the sun, but instead find themselves in the crosshairs of a long range rifle, the man holding the rifle wants to know a secret once again, this mystery thriller rates, right up there with the rest of Halle Jackson’s books!
When 6 friends get stranded on the side of the road, their RV under attack by a sniper, and someone controlling their every move via a set of walkie talkies, what could possibly go wrong? How about every last damn thing!
As the night unfolds, each character blames themselves for the “secret” their captor is asking for them to share. Each person is pointing fingers at who they think is responsible for their predicament. As morning breaks truths are revealed, lives are at risk, and friendships are put to the test.
At the halfway mark, I thought I had “Five Survive” figured out but holy smokes was I wrong. The ending? Worth the wait.
I tried to get into this book, I gave it a solid 10%+, but there was just nothing really gripping me. I WANTED to love this and be consumed like I was with A Good Girl's Guide To Murder, but it is a DNF for me right now. I may try again at another time, but after a few chapters and having no desire to continue I put the book down and moved on. With books that are thrillers, students (and adults) want to be captivated from the start. This just missed the mark for me.
This book kept me up at night! I couldn't put it down and certain parts scared the bejeezus out of me! Five Survive is about 6 young adults headed to spring break in an RV. A series of wrong turns and lacking cell service leaves them stranded in the middle of nowhere. Then someone shoots out the tires on the RV and the gas tank, gives them a walkie talkie, and a short amount of time to reveal a specific secret, or they' ll be killed.
Five Survive is a perfect thriller - it's fast paced, keeps you guessing, and an absolute page turner.
