This is one of those books where the title will drag you in, but the story itself will not.
I did not care for the social media/influencer trope. The story felt too much like it was trying to copy other already popular ones, which also is put as cameos in the story in quite a bit of different dialogue. It just did not feel unique to itself. The MC I could not care for at any point, and honestly with some plot holes, she most definitely would not have gotten away with it.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of How to Kill Men and Get Away With It by Katy Brent. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thanks to NetGalley and HQ for this ARC.
I'll admit that I went into this book, judging it by its cover. The cover looks quirky and lighthearted. That is not what we got. We instead have a female serial killer who is heartless and big on killing jerk men. It was well written, but I couldn't connect. Also, I felt the friends tended to be very shallow and lacking depth. I give this book 3/5 stars.
This book was so much fun! Right off the bat I was sucked in and never wanted to put it down. It was so fast paced and enjoyable. This definitely had me laughing out loud, and I loved every second of it. This is perfect for fans of Finlay Donovan is Killing it! I definitely would recommend this book!
This intriguing book was followed Kitty Collins, a glamorous Instagram influencer. She is beautiful, rich heiress and very popular. Her daily life was full with parties, clubbing, product promotion, and social promotion. But Kitty also has darker side of life that she not share with everyone.
Kitty's character is complicated and flawed with her mixed personality. Her nararation lacing with dark humorous. It switching smoothly between her present and darker past. For Kitty, rapist and sexual predators both deserve to die. World will become safer place for women when she can get rid of them, and she did it well. Too good to be true actually.
I enjoyed the writing style, it is successfully tackled sensitive topics about violence against women with lighter way and easier to read. But although all interesting premise is there, this story need strengthen details at the thriller part. All the murders are too easy to solved. I almost feel like the police didnt make proper investigation. This book look fun but also provide bloody scenes and should comes with several triggers for sensitive readers.
Thank you Netgalley and HQ Digital for provided my copy. My thoughts are my own.
I have to admit that I was instantly hooked with the title/cover. I know you’re not supposed to judge a book by the cover, and I totally have been burned by this, but in this case it worked for me. It wasn’t realistic but I didn’t enter it expecting that. I was hoping for a horror movie vibe with a woman killing rapists and abusers and I was not disappointed. This is one of those books where I didn’t like a single character (Charlie came close but let me down) but still loved the story. The main character was happy living a vapid life despite knowing it was vapid and there was more out there. She whined about having to be an influencer but yet enjoyed her lavish lifestyle and freebies. Kitty is your typical Instagram influencer. She posts sexy pictures, she goes to all the right clubs, she surrounds herself in other beautiful privileged people, and she has a secret hobby of killing men who hurt women and don’t deserve to live. What can go wrong?
As someone who is writing a dissertation about anti-heroines/women who do bad things and get away with them, this title easily caught my eye. Sadly, I was a bit disappointed by the story. I felt like I was dropped into the middle of a narrative in that it took me a long time to feel like I knew Kitty and understood her motives beyond the obvious. Her friends never felt like very real characters to me, which is a shame considering the story’s trajectory. I wanted to be a big fan, but this felt lackluster.
Kitty Collins is an Instagram influencer who's not always the most likeable character, being rich and vacuous. She also drops being vegan into the conversation a LOT which gets a bit irritating... the story on the whole is good, fast paced and feminist but there are a lot of triggers for violence (pretty obviously given the title) but also miscarriage and rape. Not for the faint hearted I would say, but darkly funny, tongue in cheek humour. The author wrote this during lockdown and I guess a few people were thinking about how to kill men and get away with it!!
A brilliant book - fast-paced with dark humour, unlike anything I’ve read before! I couldn’t put this book down.
Kitty Collins isn’t an easy character to like. But when she stands up for her friends and women she knows, even in the most extreme ways, she becomes an anti-hero (or anti-villain?) of some sort. After all, if justice isn’t protecting us, where’s the hope for us? There were times I hated Kitty *the Instagram star*, but then in other situations, all I wanted to say was: “Kitty, teach them a lesson!”
I had so many expectations for this book, and while it was a bit different than what I had imagined, I still ended up enjoying it. It was such an easy and fast read, and it even got me out of a reading slump, so despite my initial indecision, it definitely deserved that extra star.
Here are some things I LOVED about the book:
🧡 Lessons are learned…but with (dark) humor
While this book talks about serious topics, and a sad harsh reality that, unfortunately, is part of our society, it does it in a satirical format. This means that if you take Kitty’s actions too literally, you’ll be in for a shock. Indeed, there are many female Dexter moments, lots of blood, and shocking murders. Sometimes, you’ll wonder, despite the book’s title, how did Kitty even get away with it? The beauty of this book is that that’s not the point. This is not a typical thriller. The purpose is not to find the killer or dig deeper into accurate police investigations. The more I read, the more I understood that this is a satire of our society. The blood, though very much present, is the reflection of the ugliness of those who need to (but are unable to) defend against those who harm them. In a world where victims are judged — even if they aren’t killers. Even if they aren’t Kitty.
🧡 Kitty as a not-very-likable character
You might wonder why I am adding this to the things I loved about this book. Could the protagonist have been more relatable? Maybe someone we could even empathize with, from the beginning? It could. But I don’t think it would be the same. Unlikable and gray characters are not a bad thing. In this case, I thought it worked really well, and it added to the whole dark humor vibe of the book. I mean, our killer is busy being a social media influencer and ensuring her beverages are dairy free. At the same time, she’s also getting rid of bodies. You might not love Kitty, but she’s the perfect vigilante for this story.
How about the things I didn’t love? Well…
🌧️ The whole stalker plot / sub-plot
I understood that we were trying to add some suspense to the narrative, but I just couldn’t feel invested in this plot. At some point, I was convinced it was the main plot of this story, to the point it even distracted me from the actual character-driven story. However, throughout most of the book, there’s not much going on in that aspect. There’s an interesting twist at the end, but I was still not a major fan of how this one was developed.
🌧️ Gruesome details
This one is on me! I know it’s weird to say I didn’t like the fact that a book about a murderer was gruesome. I mean, what were you expecting, right?
Rooting for a social media influencer who’s a part-time murderer sometimes can feel a bit too much (even if her victims REALLY are the worst).
Overall, How to Kill Men and Get Away With It was a surprisingly addictive read that I still enjoyed it and would recommend to fans of this genre.
Kitty is a social media influencer living the good life and then some. She comes from enough money that she really doesn’t need to work, but she makes enough as an influencer that she doesn’t even need to touch her inherited riches. But walking home from the club one night, Kitty has an interaction with a drunk guy who simply can’t take NO for an answer. And when that drunk guy ends up dead, it more or less starts a new trend with Kitty and the men who really don’t deserve to breathe…literally. Reading this book was touch and go for me at the start. I thought it was going to be a much lighter type of story, but it actually came around with more substance the longer I read. Although there are a few holes (could be because it’s an ARC) and more than a few parts that challenged the believability scale, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and would consider more from this author in the future.
Special Note: Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
truly was excited because hello? The title??? So much potential. but alas that's the world
Thank you netgalley for the arc.
Let's talk about kitty (which? The amount of hello kittys in here were insane i approve, definitely a star of the three were for that), i wanted to like her, truly, but? she fell flat, like so flat. the killing was cool tho, i admire her for that i guess.
hen was insane actually, but like,i get daddy issues, i get craving attention, but holyshit she did go too far.
Charlie was ok but i do not trust him
Adam was one messy dude and i personally didn't feel shit for him
all in all, a solid book, a kiss to whoever came up with the title tho you made me feel so good for like a second<3
4,5 ⭐️. Wowsa! This was an epic journey from start to finish! It was an amazing read and had me hooked from the first page! Lots of humor and shocking twists that will leave you wondering what the **** just happened. Could not put this book down, you get such a big dose of girl power and empowerment. Also feeling such sadness about the reality of being a woman in todays (and all at all times) society. It’s truly sickening. Kitty Collins is my new idol.
Definitely check TWs, lots of graphic unalaving and descriptions of assaults!
Thank you HQ Digital and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. IYKYK, my reviews are always honest.
One sentence review: It had all the right ingredients but the proverbial baking soda was expired so this did not rise to expectations
SYNOPSIS
Popular Instagram influencer Kitty is rich and lil bored. When she accidentally k!lls a certified creepo who followed her home from the bar, she seemingly finds her true calling: k!lling r@pists. But with a stalker watching her every move, will she be able to get away with it?
MY OPINION
UGHHHHH!!!! I REALLY wanted to love this one, or at least slap a Honda Civic Reliable rating on there and call it a day. Women nurdering r@pists? Yes please. And doing so with tongue in cheek humor? Double yes please. Plus, cmon, that title is everything! This was shaping up to be a dark Finlay Donovan-esque book, but unfortunately, it was not meant to be for me 😢 The reason I finished this is because I was hoping and praying it was sort itself out for at least a three star but.... nah.
Kitty could've been a great character, but the inconsistencies in her behaviour and logic made her hella annoying. In short, she was hypocritical. She loved bankrolling her life with her Instagram money but constantly bitched about what it meant to be an influencer. And despite considering herself intellectually superior to everyone on the planet, Kitty surrounds herself with vapid, shallow friends from similar wealthy backgrounds. When she literally said "I'm not like these other girls" I wanted to yack. Sweetie, your propensity to pop pills, down straight shots of vodka, and throw money at your problems makes you JUST like the girlies that run in your circle.
Another point of contention was the author's cringeworthy pandering and using this book as an opportunity to promote veganism. I saw another review that said the word vegan was used 250 times in this book. Sorry for the spoiler, but the fact she's a vegan legit has NOTHING to do with the plot. If she had been poisoning these men with a Beyond Meat burger then okay, I get it. I hate that I have to say this but I have NOTHING against vegans. I barely eat red meat myself, and chicken truly freaks me tf out. But I'm not a fan of using a novel to pontificate like a mofo just because you're a passionate vegan.
Then we have my least favorite kind of unreliable narrator – the liar for funsies. A "proper" unreliable narrator is one who truly believes what they're saying is reality due to a mental illness or maybe they're constantly coked out and don't know their ass from their mouth. Regardless, lying to the reader about events until the very end just for a lil twisty twist is lazy af.
Kitty's relationship with Charlie also ruined the book for me. No spoilers, but... yeah. NAH.
And lastly, I'm not a fan of smut in my mystery/thrillers. Ain't no way you're afraid to have a picnic in a park but let some dude finger bang you outside of an axe throwing facility?????? Maybe I'm exposing myself as a "prude", but... are ya'll letting a mans pull your titties out and dj your nips on a regular Tuesday afternoon in a CCTV monitored elevator???
PROS AND CONS
Pros: fun premise, some of the humor was on point
Cons: Kitty's character was all over the place, swiss cheese ass plot, a lot of pandering, author was pontificating about veganism for no reason, last 30% really went sideways
I usually read quite gritty crime fiction and psychological thrillers, so this book was a bit away from my norm. I wasn't sure what to expect and have to admit that I rolled my eyes a little after the first chapter, about a girl called Kitty who was a social media influencer.
However, it just got better and better from there and I quickly found myself caught up in her world and wanting to know more. Kitty 'accidentally' kills a man who was following her home and she gets a taste for it, starting her own campaign to rid the world of predatory men.
This book is well written and very funny, although there is a serious undertone. I thoroughly enjoyed every page of this book and will be looking to read more by Katy Brent.
My thanks to NetGalley and the Publishers for sending me this ARC in return for an honest review.
A murder mystery that can be empowering and sends a serious message. Don’t put up with being harassed and stalked by men. If you have goosebumps, and the hairs on the back of the neck stand up, then follow your instincts and run! Take all necessary precautions, but, don’t follow the example of Kitty Collins, who is never without her Japanese friend Shun.
Kitty is a rich Influencer, she spends her life going to events, parties and posting to media sites. Whilst walking home alone from a bar one night, she is aware of being stalked. She “ accidentally “” kills the man, he “ fell”.
Now Kitty decides that men who threaten her and her group of friends should be taught a lesson. It will be one that they take to heart and they will be all cut up about it!!
I liked the dark humour, but it did become too repetitive, some events were too contrived and convenient. Kitty’s friends were quite shallow, with hardly any redeeming features.
There is a serious message in this book, women should be safe to walk alone at night in safety, but life is not always kind like that. Rape and sexual assaults continue. I enjoyed the twist at the end when the identity of Kitty’s stalker, AKA The Creep was revealed, nope, didn’t guess that at all.
I found this book to be the strongest at the beginning, when Kitty is not under suspicion and still has some moral fibre, before she becomes obsessed with revenge, sometimes on the flimsiest excuse. The second part I found to be disappointing with shallow and unlikeable characters.
My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers HQ, for my advance digital copy, in exchange for my honest review. I rated this as a four star read.
This book is just not good which is super disappointing. With such a wonderful title I thought this book was going to be amazing. But it did not deserve such a wonderful title. This book starts off pretty wild and I was hooked. However, after the first killing the book the killings just got repetitive. I felt like most of them were not justified. This book had a lot of unanswered questions and I felt like it was all over the place. And I also just thought the writing was bad. I would not suggest this one.
Thank you NetGalley, and HQ Digital for the ARC of this book.
4.5 stars for me, but rounding up! For any fans of Shondaland or You, this is a book for you - and one I’ll be recommending that my friends read.
This was such a fun read, but quick trigger warning there are a lot of mentions of murder, rape, assault and potential incest.
I loved getting to watch her live these concurrent lives where on one hand Kitty has this highly publicized life where everyone stalks her every movement, but on the flip side she has a dark vigilante side. I have to admit I was very nervous when the author first introduced Charlie, a charmer who renounced his family wealth to open a charity, because I didn’t want her to turn him into a monster, but I won’t spoil how it turned out for the pair.
I expected the revelation of her stalker to unravel differently, but all in all I really liked the direction the author took.
I can’t put my finger on exactly why this wasn’t a perfect 5/5 for me, but I think I wanted to see Kitty for the line of danger a bit more. I wanted to see her evading the police or being tied to more of the murders to give it more suspense.
Overall, I loved this book and it’s one I’ll be talking about!
“It’s astonishing how even the world’s worst monsters are desperate to keep living. Are they worried about what comes next? Can they feel those fires of hell warming their faces already?”
Kitty has a face most recognise, she’s an heiress and an influencer. She lives a privileged life. But she is merely going through the motions until after a night out with friends. She is followed home by a man. After a freak accident where he dies and she walks away she finds a new purpose in life. Protecting women and ridding the world of scum.
This dark comedy is a great read, though not for the faint heart. Think Killing Eve x Made In Chelsea. I enjoyed reading how Kitty navigated her new hobby as well as maintaining her prefect public face.
This book does touch on some key social issues in the world today with ramming it in your face.
Thank you to Katy Brent, HQ Digital, and Netgalley for this free eARC in exchange for an honest review!
How to Kill Men and Get Away with it follows Kitty Collins as she juggles her day life as a famous influencer as well as her nights as a killer of men.
To be quite honest, this book was utter chaos, and I loved every second of it. This story follows our...heroine...as she as she leaves her mark on society (off the socials) as she paves her way dripping in sarcasm and blood. Despite this story's darkness, it came off as oddly empowering since the scenarios that happened to the women in this book are too real and unfortunately happen in real life far too often.
It can get a bit gruesome at times, but everything is written in a very cold yet humorous manner, with our main character being depicted with a very distinct personality.
Overall, this is the perfect story for lovers of dark humor, and for those interested in following a rather unconventional girlboss as she makes the world a safer place for women.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
I started this book having not read the book description but thinking it looked like a book which would be quite comical.
The whole book reminded me of C J Skuse's 'Sweetpea' series which I loved. If you enjoyed that series then I'd recommend this. If you are easily offended and don't like dark humor, this book is not for you. I however found it great and such an easy read.
Kitty Collins is a rich Instagram influencer which given her 'hobbies', you shouldn't like. I can't help but like her character and felt she always meant well resulting in her coming across as some sort of heroine 😄
I found the book quite fast paced and contined that way throughout the book. As I was coming towards the end of the book I did guess one part right but it didn't take away how much I liked the book.
It did make me question whether I needed to take a long look at myself and the characters I like within books 😄
Katy Brent will be an author I will keep my eye out for in the future.
