If you're sick of hearing about women being abducted, raped, harassed on a walk home. This is the book for you. It's so relatable to the feeling of not feeling safe when walking alone, especially on a walk home. I'm sire every woman has had at least one thought about ways to make walking home safer for women. I can't say I've ever though of the extreme that Katy Collins will go to....
Where do begin with this read? It's probably a bit more blood and guts than I was expecting, but boy is it a page turner with a great final showdown. Not necessarily characters I could relate much to, other than being a female and experiencing horrible walks home or the fear of being followed and maybe not as much of a punch of an ending I had hoped for, but this is a fantastic debut novel! I'll be keeping my eye out for future books by this author.
How to Kill Men and Get Away With It is the debut novel from Katy Brent.
"Kitty Collins is an influencer. She's tired of dealing with men's boorish, aggressive behavior where they treat women like things instead of people. One night while walking home from a bar, she accidentally kills the stalker who was threatening her - the man just slipped. Now she wants to spend her time ridding the world of all of the jerks who deserve it - until one night she kills the wrong man..."
This is a dark book from Brent. It is full of lots of drinking, drugs, sex and murder. Kitty Collins has a lot of issues with men and there are very few decent men on the pages. She reminded me of characters from Swanson - you know, characters you like but they don't mind a little murder. Kitty comes across as a little self-righteous too. You might not ever eat sausage again when you find out how she disposes of her victims.
At times this feels like a rant against all men - in light of current events it's probably justified in a way.
Nice twist from Brent at the end. Didn't guess who the creeper was.
A different kind of villian/hero from Brent.
There is a great deal to like about this debut novel. It's unabashedly feminist and rages convincingly with the intense furor and helplessness so many of us feel about rampant violence against women. The writing felt somewhat uneven for the first half, but gains confidence as the story builds. The middle felt a bit repetitive. But the final quarter of the book is extremely compelling. Brent successfully builds a back story for this main character that allows her to be a protagonist we can have empathy for, and, surprisingly, root for. I can imagine this story falling flat had Brent been unable to imbue Kitty with relatable qualities. CONTENT WARNINGS for intimate partner violence, suicidal ideation, and violence. Thank you to NetGalley and HQ Digital / Harper Collins for the opportunity to read this ahead of publication in exchange for an honest review.
This book had me hooked just from the title!
Kitty is an influencer turned accidental killer in a very Dexter way; instead of killing other killers, she kills entitled, misogynist men. It’s fun, funny, sarcastic, and so very dark, and I loved every second of it. It is a fast pace read with excellent writing. This may be too dark for some people, so check the content warnings before reading. I ended up reading this book in a day; I enjoyed it so much. I will share this book with my book club once it comes out; I can't wait for them to read. Thank you, NetGalley and HQ, for the arc.
I'm all for crazy, empowered women who want to play vigilante for the day. At least, that's the impression I got from the summary on the back cover. I wanted to like this story; however, it left me feeling empty and unsatisfied. The main character isn't developed, and she's boring. Her reason for the killing was crazier than a vigilante. The storyline is prolonged. Some parts need not be there. The author just wanted to fill a void or delay the ending. The ending was so-so at best.
Thank you to HQ, HQ Digital and NetGalley for letting me read this eARC in exchange for an honest review.
The cover seemed to indicate a fun read, but the prologue soon dispelled this and reading the first few chapters was not very inducing. Story of a group of privileged young women with nothing to do except indulge in love affairs and parties involving sex, booze, and drugs, all except for Kitty the main character of the story. Who at an early age fell in love, besotted by sex, booze and drugs until she was devastated when the man tired of her, and dumped her without warning. So, she no longer trusted men and think that those that abuse and rape women are a blight on society. After accidently killing a man who tried to rape her, she began to use social media posing as innocent naïve young girls to entice predator men to their doom. It is so well written that one becomes hooked on how it ends, as slowly her tragic background and up bring is revealed that forms her character with an urge to kill for justice. Not the sort of characters to enjoy being with
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first requested this.
However I found it a bit of a page turner and wanted to find out what was going to happen next. I’m the early stages of the book I kept thinking to myself that it was very far fetched and surely she couldn’t just get away with what she was doing. Although it was about men being killed (which I obviously don’t encourage) I did find myself pretty engrossed if nothing more then for something a bit different to the romance I read all the time.
I loved the way the book was written and the short chapters kept me reading and I felt like I flew through it.
I very nearly DNFed this several times but it is a testament to the author's amazing writing style that I carried on.
Kitty Collins is a wealthy young Instagram Influencer and social media sweetheart. Yet she feels empty inside until the day she accidentally kills a man. Suddenly feeling alive for the first time, Kitty takes it upon herself to rid London of some of the undesirable men who prey on women.
The concept was great. I loved the idea of the #Metoo movement becoming a rage call for payback. The seedy world of male privilege and wealth hiding a multitude of sins was very well explored, lamented and used as a great starting point for Kitty's rage and her actual techniques for murder were well explained and executed.
The problem was that Kitty and her friends were such dislikable people that it was quite difficult to feel sympathy for them at times. They were Instatrash social tedium influencers with so many daddy issues they had a whole back catalogue. They thought nothing of eating disorders, liquid lunches, dropping thousands on shoes and doing drugs. Their friendships revolved around whoever has the most followers on social media and who could sleep with the most famous men.
The scene where Kitty refuses to go into an event where her friend is not allowed into the special VIP section because of her level of social media fame is laughably hypocritical considering Kitty, herself, introduces people with their names and follower numbers.
They are so shallow, even when attending charity galas and pretending to care about each other that it was honestly cringe at times.
The Gen Z speech and name-dropping were so overt it was painful and are really going to age the book.
It was very Dexter meets the Kardashians by way of Sex and the City.
However the book was extremely well written and, despite my apathy towards the main character, I did want to find out what happened.
Just me but this book was a little too dark in subject for me. A fast paced read where the main character, Katy Brent does the unlikely. The book hits on some great topics that certainly need to be addressed. Just a little too dark for me. Thanks#netgalley and #HQDigital for the eARC in exchange for a honest review. All opinions are mine.
Despite being privileged and absorbed with her life through the lens of instagram, Kitty is a lovable and compelling character. The book takes the reader on a spree with Kitty, remorselessly killing the vile and misogynistic men she encounters in her life.
I chose this book for the title and it certainly is light-hearted and funny. I found it easy to read but a little contrived and superficial. Kitty’s family conveniently own a meat processing plant, making it extremely easy for her to dispose of the bodies. Kitty’s stalker is integral to the story but seems to be forgotten at times. The killing scenes and the social scenes with Kitty’s friends are a slightly repetitive and feel cringy.
This book takes on important issues; women’s safety on the streets at night, consent and rape, miscarriage but fails to give any the depth they deserve. A decent debut novel for Katy Brent, I see potential and would like to read more of her work in the future.
Thank you to Netgalley for the e-ARC that I read in exchange for this honest review.
I absolutely loved this book. the dark humour and wittiness had me hooked and desperate for more. I loved the main character Kitty and was rooting for her, although i was not keen on her friends friends they were all pretty obnoxious. A great story with short sharp chapters. The whole story was told in kitty's first hand voice which i enjoyed. A dark but humorous read perfect for Halloween.
Murder has never looked so #fabulous.
Anyone who knows me, even just a little, knows that I'm obsessed with true crime. And Katy Brent just gave me the hottest serial killer for this season in her book that publishes today, How to Kill Men and Get Away With It.
If you want a hashtag worthy thriller with a little bit of comedy then you have to snag a copy of this book and be introduced to snobby, privileged, murderous Insta influencer Kitty Collins. She's fed up with egotistical males who think they can do whatever they want to women and get away with it. So fed up she's willing to kill. And the best part, the chick keeps up with her 'gram the entire time. But trust me, there's drama in this book as well. I mean, there's no way you can get away with offing a bunch of people and not get caught...or is there? You'll have to read to find out.
Kitty Collins is an online influencer, her life is a whirl of parties, brand launches, & posting photos on Instagram. Things look perfect from the outside but Kitty is feeling decidedly bored with it all. She hasn't really dated since she broke up with 'love of her life' Adam, but she watches her closest friends (Hen, Victoria, & Maisie) stumble from one bad relationship to the next. - being cheated on, lied to, & taken for granted. When she is followed home from a party & threatened with sexual assault, Kitty decides enough is enough & the guy ends up dead after falling on a broken bottle. The first death is accidental but Kitty takes that feeling & runs with it.
This was a very entertaining read with Kitty narrating & casting a very droll eye over the men in her life. Charlie, Kitty's love interest, seems to be a genuinely good guy but some of the others - oh dear. If you also have a dark sense of humour you'll probably enjoy this too. At one point Kitty needs a distraction & muses whether disemboweling a sex offender would help! The first half of the book is quite funny in tone considering the subject matter, but things take a grimmer turn in the second half. There's a sort of a Dexter-esque morality where Kitty justifies killing because she only kills bad people, but what would happen if she accidentally kills an innocent person?
There are some contrivances such as Kitty being rich & her family owning a meat-processing plant which comes in handy for disposing of dead bodies (Let's just say I'm glad I'm vegetarian!) There's very strong language, some of the killing scenes are very graphic, & there are some graphic sex scenes too. The book also deals with miscarriage, sexual assault, & infidelity, & a couple of quick memories about the family business & animal death. It's not for everyone but I loved it. 4.5 stars (rounded down).
My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, HQ, for the opportunity to read an ARC.
Murder by a glamorous vigilante influencer? What a brilliant recipe for a book!
Kitty Collins is a London influencer with a secret. She kills men who feel entitled to take what they want from women. And while the way she goes about it may not be the best way to handle things, you also support and cheer her on for being willing to take action. But she also wants to have a normal life, especially after she meets a man that makes her want love again but also reminds her that not all men are bad. And the book is also a story about her struggling to reconcile both sides of herself.
How to Kill Men and Get Away With It is a fast paced, witty, and darkly humorous book that is entertaining but also highlights some important and relevant issues.
Have you ever walked home at night, keys in hand, ready to throw a punch in self-defence? That’s how it all started. The killing spree, I mean.
I sort of tripped into this role… Literally. The first one was following me. That guy from the nightclub who wouldn’t leave me alone. I pushed him, he stumbled, and fell onto his own broken wine bottle. Oops. It was such a waste of a good house white.
But now I can’t seem to stop and nor do I want to… I’ve got a taste for revenge and quite frankly, I’m killing it.
Wow this book! I was expecting something light and bumbling but this book was so dark and funny! I could not put it down. You don’t often find yourself rooting for a killer, especially one that’s rich, spoiled and full of herself but Kitty Collins is utterly charming. Loved this book, can’t wait to read the next one.
A famous social media influencer taking it upon herself to be a vigilante of sorts, ridding the streets of London off scums who treat women like dirt. The abusers, the chauvinists who think themselves God's gift to the world, the pricks. What actually started off as an accident ended up being a killing spree. Serving up a weird kind of justice. It was morbid and gory and for most parts illogical especially at how she gets away with everything but it was wickedly fun, delectably exciting and a total hoot! All that hilarity however actually covering a deep take on misogyny, rape culture, drugging, abuse and toxic masculinity. (Please take these as TWs) It's fast paced and a major page turner with a few twists scattered about. Of course it's not perfect. There are parts that will irk you, make you cringe. Some baffling and gets you questioning your moral compass. A few emotionally tugging bits. For most parts, you'd just grotesque gasp.
The frivolous nature and lifestyle of this story might not be for everyone, even the detailed intensity of the killings. But if you can stomach Joe Goldberg and his shenanigans in You or shows like Dexter and that movie, Promising Young Woman. Or if you have read My Sister, The Serial Killer and liked that one, then you will enjoy this. Thank you again Netgalley and HQ Digital for this delightful ARC. Do keep a lookout for this one!
While there were things I liked about How To Kill Men and Get Away With It, there were more things that I disliked. Sadly, this book was not for me.
There were a look of good ideas about this book but with poor execution. I found the dialogue unnatural, the pacing of the storyline off, and one of the main plot points (Kitty’s stalker) seemed to be forgotten about for majority of the book. The ending and “twist” had potential to be really good, but I didn’t find that the author left enough clues for the reader. Even if an ending is surprising, I like to think back on the hints that I missed. I felt like there wasn’t many for this book, which made the ending feel rushed.
I definitely can see the “female Dexter” approach, but in my opinion, Kitty was no where near as calculated and prepared as Dexter was in his series. While she only killed bad men, the reasoning was all over the place and felt like she just picked her victims at random without confirming that these were REALLY bad people. I didn’t root for her the way I did with Dexter, which was kind of a let down.
While this book wasn’t for me, I can definitely see why people enjoy it. It’s a quick read with short chapters. Kitty and her influencer friends might be enjoyable for some people to read about, and the romantic subplot kept me wanting to continue reading. All in all, I think this book was a decent debut and I can see a lot of potential with the author! I will likely pick up her next work.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and HQ for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review!
Ah this book had me laughing from the start! It started with a bang, and the punches kept coming.
This book is best described as a cross between Finaly Donovan and a female Dexter. Kitty Collins is an Instagram sensation with many many followers, she’s a celebrity. She’s super privelaged as she comes from old money, but her money is from animal processing and she went vegan after touring the processing plant. Once night, Kitty spots a predator, and decides to kill him. This sets her off on a killing spree of sorts where she targets men who prey on women. However, Kitty has a stalker, and he seems to know more about her than she’d like…then she learns the stalker has witnessed her murdering a few people. Kitty is unsure what to do. Her friends think she’s depressed after a bad breakup but that is so far from the truth. Can she trust the new man in her life? What is her stalker wanting? Will she be able to figure all this out before the cops wise up to her murdering ways?
This book was light and humorous albeit a little dark at times. If you’re a fan of dark humor you wont mind. I found the second half of the book was not as fun as the first, it was like something shifted, and it didn’t work as well for me. The ending was good, and tied up some loose ends, but the middle just got to me. Overall this is a fun one and pick it up if you need a humorous break from reality!
I gave this one 4 out of 5 stars, it would have been a 4.5 but the second half didn’t sit the best for me. I really enjoyed it overall though. Special thanks to @netgalley and the publisher, @hqstories, for an advanced e-ARC in exchange for this honest review.
How to Kill Men and Get Away With It introduces you to the brilliant Kitty Collins. An Instagram influencer by day, killer by night. Despite the dark, gruesome nature that comes with murder, this story was intertwined with witty remarks that had me smiling and laughing throughout. As horrific as Kitty’s actions may be, there is a certain likeability to her that will have you questioning your morals. I always found myself rooting for her, whether it be her murderous moments or the simple moments of her everyday life.
A fast paced read that will take you through all the ups and downs of life, love, family, and friendship.
Author, Katy Brent, tackles current issues surrounding sexual assault within the writing. She shines a light on the dangers that come with being a woman, and how many abusers never pay for their actions. It may be fiction, but the story is a reminder of inequality. A reminder of how far there is to go until women no longer have to walk home with a key between their knuckles.
