Wow! Just wow! Within 5 pages this book had me hooked. The twists and turns and the way it is told non-sequentially is brilliant. Edge of your seat reading!
Kit is a maid with a snooping addiction, poking into her wealthy client's lives. It's all harmless, until she sees something that she can't unsee, making her dangerous to her clients... and her clients dangerous to her. When Homicide cop Mal is called to a bloody scene, there is no body, the home owners are gone and the maid is MIA.
This took a while before I got into it, but the second half is super fast paced. Told in multiple POVs and timelines, this thriller/mystery has lots of twists and turns. Although I wasn't really interested in some of the POVs in the first half (Daisy's was the only one in which I really was interested), at about the halfway mark I got super invested and tried so hard to figure out what happened. The author didn't go as far as I thought she might in my many hypotheses, but it was really entertaining to try and figure out. This was my first book by this author, but certainly not my last!
I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Don't go into reading this book thinking it's about a maid who tells you all the dirty secrets she learns from her clients. This book is definitely full of twists. I just wasn't fully into the storyline. I did enjoy the elderly neighbor character
The Maid's Diary is a twisty and often shocking thriller that explores the complexities of power dynamics that exist between people. The book presents an intriguing premise and an engaging storyline, but there were a couple of things that took away from my reading experience unfortunately.
One of my main issues was with the writing, and the dialogue, which at times felt unnatural and forced. It was not always clear how the characters were feeling or what their motivations were, and this made it difficult to fully immerse myself in the story. Additionally, there were moments where a character would reveal an overwhelming amount of information during a conversation, which felt somewhat unrealistic.
I also wasn't 100% onboard with the characters themselves. Some of them weren't well-developed and instead felt flat or 2-D. Some characters even seemed like caricatures of themselves, lacking the depth and complexity that would make them truly compelling.
I do think that for fans of thrillers who don't rely too much on character development, The Maid's Diary is a worthwhile read. The book tackles interesting themes such as power, privilege, and class, and it does so in a way that many readers will find compelling. The plot is engaging, and there are enough twists and turns to keep the reader hooked. While I had some issues with the writing and character development, The Maid's Diary is still a book that is worth checking out.
2.5 stars.
Thank you Montlake and Netgalley fot this arc. I was really involved in this crazy life of secrets and pretendings. It is really an unique way of points if view that capture you from the start to the end. It waa quite a long but not too long book. Really disturbing but really well written the tension was there to cut. A diary that was so much more
Kit Darling is a maid with a snooping problem. What starts out as curiosity becomes a dangerous game. How far are people willing to go to protect their secrets, or to seek justice for secrets kept?
WOW! I just thought this book had me hooked at the start. But as the story kept progressing, I COULD NOT STOP READING! Who needs sleep? White does a fantastic job of grabbing your attention and keeping you guessing until the very end.
The only slight critique I have (and I hate to even throw this out there because this book really is fantastic), is that the explanation of events toward the end is borderline 'over-the-top' for me. I know that is vague but I don't want to give anything away. Even with that, I still highly recommend this book and can't wait to read more from Loreth Anne White!
I’ll confess, I read 7 Loreth Anne White books last year. The main draw for me is always the twisted nature of each story and the addictive pacing. The Maid’s Diary did not disappoint on either front. The opening had me hooked, and I never looked back. The plot is told through a variety of viewpoints, including a slew of potential suspects and the detective trying to clear a crime scene, in a variety of timelines. All five of the narrators are intimately involved in the story, and are all well-written. The main narrators are the three women: Kit the maid, Mal the detective, and Daisy the wife. These women are complete and unique characters, with emotional depth and backgrounds that permeate every decision they make. Weaving together these multiple viewpoints could have resulted in a convoluted, trying-to-be-clever, mess. But instead, the pacing allows for reveal after reveal that pushes the story forward into a full sprint to the finish line. The ending was satisfying in a way that’s hard to achieve. All my questions were answered, but the mystery still stuck with me for days afterwards.

Loved it!! What did I just read!?! There's so many twists and turns, I could have never guessed what was really going on. I'm not sure how Kit Darling actually had time for cleaning houses. Kit was actually brilliant, I'm not sure how she planned it all out. I don't think I ever want a cleaning lady, especially one like Kit. All the snooping!! Did I feel bad for Daisy and Jon? Not the least bit. I hate to say it, but I still smile about the ben-gay incident. Jon truly deserved it. The ending with How it Starts, shows Daisy's true colors. It's hard to feign innocence, when you know exactly what's happening and try to clean up and hide everything. Daisy and Jon truly deserved each other. Loved the ending when everything was finally revealed. I was definitely shocked. Who would go to all that trouble?? Someone out for revenge!! I felt really bad for Kit. Her parents, especially her dad, treated her horrible after the traumatic event. They pretty much blamed her. It was terrible when Kit discovers what her best friend was hiding all those years. I was hooked from the first page and couldn't put the book down.
Definitely recommend the book. It was a great mystery/thriller. Loved the characters (even though most of them are horrible people), story and writing style. Look forward to reading more books by the author.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Montlake through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
A story of long thought out, cold revenge. Two very rich couples, pregnant, super mansion houses and apparently everything anyone could want, and their maid. One of the houses is found covered in vast quantities of blood but no body. Police are, not surprisingly, brought in. Each chapter is told by one or other of the characters, before, during and after the murders. Although clearly noted it nonetheless made for messy reading. Oh it's Jon two weeks before the probably murder; nope it's the detectives two days later. Aspects of couple relationships, family, history and revenge, people who are or are not who they seem. There's a lot of dialogue and discussion which, at times, drags. The characters being unsympathetic don't help. A slow psychological thriller with, sadly, not a lot of new twists. Not one of the author's best to my mind. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy.
I couldn't get into this and had to DNF. It's dragged out and I didn't like any of the characters. I also feel like this plot has been done before so often that Im kind of over it.
Won't be reviewing anywhere else as I didn't finish it.
The Maid’s Diary is a high suspense and twisty read in multiple POVs. Kit Darling is a maid with wealthy clients that live in high-end luxury homes. She is a bit of a snooper and uncovers the secrets of her clients. Mix that up with a stressed out detective, an unreliable witness, and a cast of characters that are quite frankly horrible people and you’ve got a pretty good read. Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake for a free e-copy in exchange for my honest opinion. The Maid’s Diary is now available.
Thank you to NetGally and Montlake.
This was my first Loreth Anne White book and I will be reading ALL her others.
I could NOT book this book down. Just when you think you knew what was happening or had things figured out there was another twist. I would rate this as a top book so far for this year and for 2022!! Have already started recommending this to my friends and family.
If you are looking for a story about a maid who has a traumatic past and a snooping problem, then this book is for you. Will leave you on the edge of your seat!
I’ve been curious about this author for a long time because her books tend to get unusually high ratings for a thriller author (this one currently sits at a 4.3 average), so i went in with pretty high expectations.
I felt like this one was good in theory but a little too dragged out - it reminded me a lot of Look Closer but a less interesting or surprising version of it. I’d still like to check out more from White though
The Maid's Diary is a book that will keep you on edge. You're never quite sure what's going to happen next. Kit Darling is a maid that travels from house to house cleaning for various clients. Kit is good at her job and is popular with the clients. However, the clients don't know that Kit is a snoop. She likes to look in drawers and closets, try on clothes, jewelry, shoes, etc. What happens when Kit finds out something about her rich clients that could ruin their lives? What will Kit do with that information?
Everything changes when Kit becomes the maid for Jon and Daisy Rittenberg. Jon is a famous former Olympic downhill skier. He's well known, good looking, married, rich, and everyone loves him.....well almost everyone. Jon has some things he's done in his past that could get him in trouble if anyone found out. Daisy is very protective of Jon's reputation as she wants their life to be golden. Daisy is pregnant with their first child and they've recently moved back to be close to her parents. Daisy's father owns his own company and is very wealthy. He told Daisy if they moved back he would give Jon a good job in the company.
Daisy meets Vanessa at a yoga class and they become fast friends. They're both pregnant and are well off. Vanessa is married to Haruto and they live in a house known as the Glass House. It's a beautiful house with huge windows that sits by the water. There are no blinds or curtains so you're always on display. Beulah Brown is the neighbor who is across the street and confined to the top floor of her house due to illness and disability. She passes time by sitting at the window watching the neighborhood and writing down things that happen. Her son recently got her a pair of binoculars to keep her entertained. She doesn't have much time to live and is on a lot of heavy meds. Beulah wakes up one night after hearing a woman scream. She calls 911 and reports it and says she thinks it came from the Glass House. Beulah tells the police she saw 2 people dressed in rain gear drag a rolled up rug to their Audi and put it in the back seat before driving off.
Detective Mallory and her partner Benoit are in charge of the investigation. The Glass House has blood all over it. Whoever lost this much blood couldn't have survived. Whose blood is it? Who screamed? Who were the 2 people in rain gear dragging a rolled up rug to their car? How does the maid fit in? Do Jon and Daisy know anything as they are friends with Vanessa and Haruto? This book will keep you guessing until the end and the ending will blow your mind! I'd like to thank NetGalley and Amazon Publishing for an advanced copy of The Maid's Diary in exchange for a fair review. #TheMaidsDiary
First off I want to thank @netgalley, @montlake & @lorethannwhite for my free ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This one was an enjoyable mystery/thriller. I was intrigued from the beginning and enjoyed the countdown to the murder in each chapter. It kept me hooked and needing to figure out what was happening. The multiple POV's added to the book and intrigue.
The characters were highly unlikeable for me, but kept me intrigued in figuring out who was lying. Throughout the book I kept changing my mind on who the culprit was. The only really likeable character was Mal the police investigator.
I found it to be cleverly written and intriguing, but I don't think the ending was as suspenseful as I would've liked. But there were twists that are sure to keep you glued to your seat.
If you're looking for a good psychological twisty thriller try it out !
Wow! A complex mystery that will keep you on your toes. You definitely need to pay attention with this one. I love a fast paced book with shorter chapters that keeps flowing.
Kit Darling is a maid with a snooping problem. When her past and present collide she’s taken down a dark journey. What she finds in her new clients home could end them, or her.
A clever ending, interesting characters and lots of twists for you.
Sadly, I had to dnf this book. Many characters and a hint of suspense but I couldn’t get into it. I tried a little longer in case but this book just wasn’t for me.
Entertaining quick read with tight plot, satisfying twist, and well-fleshed-out characters. I enjoyed this suspenseful mystery even more than I thought I would.
Thank you to Netgalley and Montlake for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
Omg, what a story! The Maid’s Diary by Loreth Anne White was such an exhilarating read. First let me just say that I had never read anything by this author before. Big mistake, BIG, because this book was really good. There were so many twists to this story that there was no way I could figure it out. What I can say is that it was a perfect case of getting revenge and extracting karma. The ending just blew me away! I sure didn’t see that coming. If you love mysteries, police procedurals and reading about women scorned then you need to read this book! After this, I know I’ll be checking out all of this authors backlist. I’d like to thank NetGalley for the arc that I received off the Read Now section. This was a great read and it deserves a 5 star rating!
This book is one of those thrillers where you think its obvious what has happened, so you know there must be a twist coming...repeatedly. So really I was kept on my toes to the very end, even when I felt I knew where it was going. We get a lot of points of view, a lot of characters with dark thoughts, and obviously lots of questionable behavior. I really enjoyed it! I won't say much about the plot because it is very twisty and I don't want to give anything away. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to provide my honest review.
