Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC. Great twisty thriller right on time for women!! First time reading this author, but won't be the last. Four stars.
I really liked Beulah, the elderly lady who starts the book rolling, but that is the last thing I enjoyed about this book.
A great deal of this thriller feels like it has been done before, either in thriller format or in the film Promising young woman.
This book is about the revenge a maid takes when she realises she is working for the man that raped her.
The writing is clunky and every conversation is filled with too many words for absolutely no purpose.
I would recommend this book to someone who has neither seen that film or read many thrillers.
I received this book as an ARC from Netgalley in return for an honest review.
The Maid's Diary was exactly what I wanted in a thriller. It kept my attention, it was fast paced and it was fun. I like how there were many different POVs and of course, all of the twists and turns. If thrillers are your jam, I definitely recommend checking this one out.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this eArc in exchange for an honest review!
I think the overall story of "The Maid's Diary" was good. It was entertaining, had good twists, and a satisfying ending. What I had trouble with was the delivery of the story. It felt too drawn out and I felt like I constantly didn't fully catch everything going on sometimes. At the start of the novel, we are presented with a bloody murder scene and no idea who was killed, and who was involved. I usually enjoy these types of mysteries, where you are trying to figure out the victim and the murderer. However, it made this story more convoluted and confusing at times. Despite the pacing, I think the reveal at the end makes this worth checking out!
"My name is Kit. Kit Darling. I'm thirty-four. Single.
Vegan. Love animals. Feed birds.
I'm a maid.
My passion is amateur theater.
My superpower is being invisible."
I could not put this book down. It was engaging, surprising, diabolical, and much, much more!
There are multiple points of view and a few different time streams that weave this tale. Sometimes that works for me and sometimes I feel that this format can lead to a lot of repetition-which loses me as a reader. White wrote this in such a smart way and I was 1000% focused on this tale of trauma, revenge, and finding oneself when you had all but lost hope.
Everyone in this book plays a part in this intricate tale and watching the pieces fall into place was riveting!
I cannot recommend this book enough. This story-and it's twists and turns that I didn't see coming-will definitely stick with me!
I read and reviewed a copy of this eARC thanks to Montlake publishing via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

This is a clever multi person point of view book. It’s a fast paced thriller that involves a whodunnit scenario with interesting characters that all fall into the gray. If you are interested in books that involves detectives, then this one is for you. For me, I dig fast paced thrillers but I did find this one a little predictable and personally, I struggled relying to the characters. It was a solid 3 star rating for me.
Thank you to the publisher and author for letting me review this copy on NetGalley!
I love a Loreth Anne White book. They’re filled with mystery, suspense and keep me on the edge of my seat. I usually devour the book in one or two sittings. This time was no different. This story is told in a few perspectives and weaving different timelines throughout. We have Kit Darling (the maid) who has a bit of a snooping problem at her workplaces. She sees something she shouldn’t have. Something that her clients (the Rittenbergs) are willing to potentially kill to protect. And we have Detective Mallory Van Alst, who is called to the scene of a homicide where there is plenty of blood but no body. As Detective Van Alst investigates she begins to learn nothing is as it seems.
Boy this was a riveting read. The story was interesting, twisted, thrilling, a bit creepy, but good. Really good. 4 stars from me.
A great read.
This is the first book i have read by this author but after reading this I need to see if she has wrote anything else.
Kit darling is a snooper she likes to snoop on her clients but that can get you in trouble.
I didnt guess the ending so that is a bonus, And twists and turns to the story great.
What an amazing read! I’ve been looking for a thriller that really pulls me in and this is it! The novel follows Kit Darling as she cleans the homes of the local wealthy families in her area…unfortunately, Kit has a snooping addiction and we are able to see all the trouble that it causes. The twists and various POVS/timelines made me unable to put the book down! I highly recommend this book if you’re looking for an easy read thriller!
This was a really good book. It centers on Kit, who cleans houses for a living and loves to snoop. She finds something that will blow her clients’ lives up if it gets out, and also has a personal tie to her. Her story is mostly told through diary entries but you also get chapters from the couple whose house she cleans and from the police detective, Mal, who is trying to figure out what happened when it all comes to a head.
The book is fast paced and I liked the changing POVs as well as the dual timelines, so you know that something happens and you get to see the events leading up to it. There are some great twists, one that I didn’t see coming at all, though once I figured it out I realized just how expertly the author laid the breadcrumbs. There are some horrible characters in this book but also some really likable characters and the overall revenge theme was well done. The author had a way of really endearing me to the characters and feeling like I “got” them without spending a lot of time on each one. I particularly felt for Mal, who is struggling with her husband’s early onset dementia. I even felt like I could emphasize with the elderly neighbor who only has a bit part in the book.
The ending was satisfying for me. I can’t figure out how realistic it was, but I didn’t care because I liked the way it all turned out. I also enjoyed the Vancouver, BC setting; I know the area well and rarely see books set there.
Overall, this was a fun and fast paced read with characters for which I rooted. I’d recommend to those who like thrillers and psychological thrillers. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I got Gone Girl vibes from this one.
Kit Darling is a maid to the wealthy. She uses her occupation as an excuse to snoop, because that's what she does to deal with past trauma. Her snooping eventually causes her to question her next path in Loreth Anne White's thriller about confronting the past with your own sense of justice. White left me rooting for Kit the entire time while reading this fast-paced, psychological punch-packed entertainment.
This book has trigger warnings, particularly regarding sexual assault.
Since Gone Girl I always approach any story based on a diary doubting the ability of the story to surprise me- I'm I'm hyper alert to misdirection. But here, the author pulls it off. She delivers a compelling read that sucks you in and keeps you off balance. Well done!
Great read, regular fans of the author will love it. THE MAID’S DIARY paints for the reader murder, missing persons, things behind the images of wealth and luxury, a shady past, clandestine memories you thought you left behind, and impacts of social media. You have a maid that loves to snoop around who discovers more than what she has bargained for, friendships in question, affairs that can ruin reputations, and a homicide investigation that unravels secrets long buried. Grab this book now if these pique your interest. White gives the reader fleshed out characters and multiple perspectives that grip you with every page. Recommend for mystery readers.
Characters are very well written, and I raced through this book. Gripping from the start and everything that a psychological thriller should be. Dont take my word for it.......read it ! You wont be disappointed
Many thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read an ARC 5 WELL DESERVED STARS! You will want to read this in one sitting because you are on the edge of your seat the entire time… I was mad at life getting in the way!
Well, well, well. I might just have found another author to satiate my thrillaholic needs. The maid’s diary was dark, suspenseful and twisty in just the right way.
Synopsis:
A maid loves to snoop in the houses she cleans. When she discovers a secret the occupants of a house she is cleaning is hiding, her life is in danger. The couple living in the house might just do anything to prevent the secret from coming out.
The book has different POVs. There is the maid, writing in her diary. You also meet the couple where the maid is cleaning, and a police officer.
The story is cleverly written and I found no inconsistencies. It’s obvious that the author is well versed in writing novels. There is a perfect balance between the police investigation of the murder and the people involved in it. Already pretty early on a bombshell is dropped. I think my eyes probably bulged and my mouth was wide open as the penny dropped.
I also loved how multilayered the story was. There is so much going on. It’s about trauma, revenge and standing up for yourself. My favorite character was Kit (the maid) herself. Her diary entries are short so we really don’t know too much about her, but my heart reached out to her nonetheless.
If you’re looking for a well-crafted psychological thriller, the maid’s diary will check all your boxes.
Thanks to netgalley and montlake publishing for the arc in exchange for my honest review.
"The Maid's Diary" unfolds with multiple points of view and diary entries. The story enfolds gradually, leaving the biggest reveal for the end. I enjoyed the twists and turns of the story and the fast pace. pace kept me reading. However, It is a particularly dark story to stomach (shares plot points with the film, "Promising Young Woman"). I would not recommend this for sensitive readers. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
What a twisted tale of revenge! This started off rather slowly while all the characters were introduced and the stage was set, but about 50% in the story really took off. This was a good psychological suspense novel.
Twisted domestic thriller that is impossible to put down. Kit is a maid with a dark history and a problem with snooping on her clients. On one of her house cleaning jobs she makes a discovery that brings her past back with a vengeance. Kit wasn’t always a maid, she was a smart young women with a bright future ahead of her. That changes one night when the unthinkable happens at a party. Fast paced, super smart thriller that I could not stop reading. I think this is the best book yet by this author.
Loreth Anne White is a one click author for me. This book was a Prime First Read for February and had a reduced whispersync price so this was a win-win all around! I enjoyed the narration and felt that the various accents and character voices were well done. We’ve got a snooping maid’s journal, the rich couple whose house she’s cleaning with secrets galore, and a police detective investigating a potential murder scene. The book itself was a bit difficult to follow at the beginning as there are multiple POVs and timelines but, as things progressed, the plots converged and it all came together for some explosive twists and turns by the end! If you enjoy a good revenge mystery, this one’s for you!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
I really wanted to like this book. I really did. I love most of Whites books. I sort of enjoyed it off and on but I really disliked the ending all around.
A lot of the book left me confused and wondering what was going on.
Not my favorite of hers
