Unputdownable! Twists and turns everywhere. Loved it. A big thank you to Netgalley and Loreth Anne White for a review copy of this book. Would totally recommend. Also look forward to more from this author.
The past few years have brought plenty of "Maid" titles in the thriller genre, but this one manages to stand out in the crowd. It strikes a great balance -- more suspenseful and grittier than Nita Prose's "The Maid," and offers a longer list of suspects and more detective-drama than Freida McFadden's "The Housemaid."
"The Maid's Diary" took a few chapters to take off, and I had to pay attention as the large cast of characters was introduced so I could remember who was who. A few chapters in though, I was hooked, and kept reading until well past my normal bedtime. I didn't see the resolution coming, and didn't guess any of the twists and turns that made this book so much fun.
My only complaint, and it's a small one, is that the book left one small question unanswered. Who was in the car with Daisy? I was expecting it to be wrapped up on the last page, but I was left guessing.
When a detective arrives at a house where clearly a crime has been committed but there is no body, she’s confused. the couple who live there and the maid are missing.
I was lacking the suspense here. I think it’s because the first few chapters switched a lot with perspective and time. I found it confusing. Some of the later Daisy chapters could’ve been shifted forward more to make it easier for the reader.
This book was published only a few days ago. It's The Maid's Diary by Loreth Anne White which I received from Montlake (Amazon Publishing) via Netgalley.
A maid who can't stop snooping around. That is, untill she comes across a terrible secret. A secret so dark it turns quite dangerous. A horrific scene at a luxury waterfront house is just the start.
Twist after twist when reading this thriller. It wasn't clear untill the last part what actually happened, and I do like thrillers like these a lot. It was a fast paced psychological thriller that left me with questions that I needed answered and that's why I had to keep reading. Loved the pace, the story itself and the characters. All were quite well worked out so it was an amazing ride.
5/5⭐
This was my first Loretta Anne White novel, and all I can think to say right now is WOW! I am usually pretty good at figuring out plot points and endings, but this book kept me on my toes. There are so many twists that left my jaw on the floor. I was a little hesitant in the beginning because each “chapter” is a different person’s point of view and a different period in time, but it all came together so easily. My favorite quote in the book: “People can seem so ordinary on the surface, but scratch the veneer, and there’s always a secret beneath the gloss.” Can’t wait to read more by Loretta Anne White! I highly highly recommend this book.
I would like to begin this review by thanking all of my Goodreads pals that have sung the praises of Loreth Anne White. You did not steer me wrong!
Kit Darling makes her living as a maid for wealthy clients in Vancouver. She also admits to having a snooping problem. One day she is sent to a new clients home and upon entering she is stunned by who the clients are. The Rittenbergs. John Rittenberg is a two time Olympic gold medalist in skiing and his wife, Daisy, comes from an extremely wealthy family well known in the area for their ski resorts. Seeing their happy framed photos around the home has triggered many traumatic memories for Kit. Memories that trigger Kit into action. It's time to do a little snooping....
Meanwhile, a very pregnant Daisy befriends Vanessa at a yoga class for pregnant mothers. The two hit if off and become fast friends. Vanessa invites Daisy and Jon for dinner so they can meet her husband and get to know each other better. A bloody scene is all that remains of the dinner. Vanessa and her husband are no where to be found. Daisy and Jon refuse to cooperate with authorities.
I know what I just wrote isn't saying much but I'm too fearful to spill the beans. This books is Devious with a capital "D". I never once fully grasped what was happening so when the reveals came I was so very shocked and satisfied. I adored Kit and couldn't help but to root for her. The baddies were perfectly done baddies. The detectives on the case, Mal and Benoit, were also excellent. I really enjoyed watching the investigation unfold and I was practically holding my breath until the bitter end. And that ending? Perfection! 👌 4 stars!
Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake for my complimentary copy.
Twisted thriller with plenty of twists and surprises. Not very many likeable characters tho and a pretty unbelievable plot.
Wow! What a book! So many emotions! Geez! I really felt bad for the main character but in the end I loved how everything went! This book had it all! It had suspense, intrigue, action, murder?, mystery, and so many crazy twists and turns! And I mean crazy! The storyline was so very interesting and had me glued to my Kindle! I could have never guessed how this story was going to go! I highly recommend reading this book! Its so worth reading! I absolutely enjoyed reading this one! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
I loved this book! It’s so clever and well written. Nothing beats a good psychological thriller and this book is one of the best.
It’s got plenty of twists throughout and a fabulous ending, I’d definitely recommend.
Shut. The. Front. Door.
This wasn’t a novel….it was a puzzle!! Of the best kind. Wealthy people, underhanded people, dirty, dirty people & a damaged but clever woman.
I’d never read this author before, never even heard of her but WOW. Stayed up too late & in under 48 hours, I DEVOURED this book!
If you love some fun, psychological suspense, spend your weekend with The Maid’s Diary. You’ll gasp, laugh, ponder & ache reading this mind-blower!!!
Having read this authors previous novels I knew I was reading an intricate layered psychological thriller carefully blended with a police procedural that kept me guessing until the end. Kit Darling (she kept her ex husbands name) is a improv artist, ensemble theater player working as a maid. She loves the anonymity the job gives her as she loves to ‘snoop’ through her wealthy clients lives. Kit is young attractive, acts carefree but has a deep deep past trauma brought to light by inserting herself in a clients life. Mallory is the detective who has to sort through the story of a missing person, a murder investigation and the aftermath of what Kit discovered.. Thoroughly absorbing and twisting.
This had me hooked from the start. The book starts off with a bang and it does slow down a bit in the middle but the ending really ramps up again.
The characters were all complex and real although they were also just the worst people lol! But they were bad people realistically, not pantomime villains who creep about and act suspect all the time. You recognise so many of the character traits in real people you know. The behaviors and attitudes.
The narrative is interest with excerpts from the maids diary which adds another layer to the narrative. It also gives you the inside perspective of why things in the main story are happening.
This story is very character based but it never gets bogged down in too much narrative and the story is kept moving forwards. It's such a fascinating story about deeper issues and it does touch on some painful subjects, but does so very respectfully and honestly.
It an amazing psychological thriller which keeps you engaged throughout and really gets under your skin. A must read!
"If you see a shocking secret . . . you could be in trouble. People--rich people--will do anything to protect themselves and their families . . . even kill."
Kit Darling is a maid with a self proclaimed “snooping” problem. When she discovers something that could destroy them both!
This is the first Loreth Anne White novel I have read but it won’t be the last! It’s clear this author can write an entertaining thriller!
There was very good character development. I disliked most of the characters in this book but that’s when you know it’s done right!!
I felt the pace of the book started on a high note, went downhill a bit in the middle, and then spiked at the last 20%.
This book also touches on some more deeper issues, which gives the book more depth.
To say I didn’t see the twists coming is I know, predictable (I hardly ever see them coming!) but it’s definitely twisty and exciting!!
I really enjoyed this twisty book, it was very well written and I just couldn’t put it down. The ending was brilliant . It’s a long time since I’ve enjoyed a book like this for awhile. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
"Hey, I found your nose. It was in my business again." (Unknown)
Kit Darling can't help herself. She's fascinated by the lifestyles of others. She'd even admit that she's an uncontrollable snoop. Searching out and sliding open closet doors or pulling back the secrets that people keep in their underwear drawers. It's how she's programmed.
And her latest occupation is enabling her like a kid in a candy store. Kit works as a maid for a cleaning company in Vancouver. Her eyes have zeroed in on mountains of secrets easily accessed by the turn of a key or a security code. Kit does have an A rating with the company after eight years and does get to the cleaning aspect of her job as well. Speed is the priority in order to clock in time for snooping.
Kit also keeps a journal of her exploits. It fascinates her to re-read sections at a time where her cleverness has paid off.
Enter Daisy Rittenberg, extremely pregnant and extremely swollen in places that pregnant women know only too well. Her husband, Jon, is a former gold medalist known for his talent on the slopes. He now works for Daisy's family enterprise and is up for a promotion. Daisy and Jon will become new clients of Kit. Kit is about to stumble upon some deeply guarded secrets behind these doors. Buckle up......it's gonna be one rough, rough ride.
Loreth Anne White is a stellar writer. The Prologue alone in the beginning pages will have you huffing and puffing. She certainly knows how to set up a scene and make it last. Her character choices are well thought out and we readers nod our heads with bug-eyed approval. My favorite characters were actually Detective Mallory Van Alst and Corporal Benoit Salumu. Both have interesting backstories. Please, oh please, bring them back again, Loreth Anne. This could be the start of a mighty fine series with them in starring roles.
The Maid's Diary is gonna be big......really big. White carves out a storyline that is finely intricate with many strings attached. She makes the readers work diligently for this one. Everything changes within nano seconds. Just like we like 'em. Whew! And double whew.
I received a copy of this book through NetGalley for an honest review. My thanks to Montlake Publishers and to the talented Loreth Anne White for the opportunity.
Get this book! What an absolute awesome domestic thriller!
As the summary states, Kit Darling is a maid with a snooping problem. As she moves from mansion to mansion we are along for the ride as she does her own style of detective work in the homes. Little by little we learn more about Kit and how she became a maid and why she is trying very hard to stay invisible in the very wealthy enclave in a ski town.
While the start of the book is interesting, the very middle just takes off! You will love the twists and the ending is superb. Believable and achievable. Loreth Anne White has created a unique domestic thriller and I recommend you grab it! If you like twisty thrillers, domestic stories of the rich and the powerful or are just a fan of the fantastic story telling of Loreth Anne White, then The Maid's Diary is for you!

This is silly. It is campy. I hated all of the characters.
OMG I loved the entire book. I love books about how fake social media is and how we should be noticing our maids.
The ending is so good. So so good!

I haven't finished reading The Maid's Diary yet, but I feel compelled to review it.
First, I'm very grateful for the advanced copy...thank you.
I started reading this book last night around 7pm, and at midnight my eyes refused to allow me to keep reading, even though I desperately wanted to. I was hooked from the first sentence and I'm thoroughly enjoying the way Loreth writes...her descriptions allow me to form a vivid picture and the twists and turns have me very invested in the characters. Totally a page turner. I got up early today so I could get a few things done, allowing me time to sit uninterrupted and finish the book, which I plan to do as soon as I send this review.
I highly recommend The Maid's Diary. It keeps the reader turning the page, never feeling like there's fluff to add to the word count, which often happens in books.
Very good book, wonderful writing and a storyline that keeps you guessing. Buy it, and plan to get lost for several hours, because you will not want to put it down.
The Maid's Diary by Loreth Anne White was a hard book to put down.
White’s writing style really packed a punch complete with twists and turns right to the last chapter.
I was gripped right from the beginning. She sucked me in and never let up.
As usual this book was very well written the story was riveting from beginning to end.
I really liked that the plot twists were not easy to see coming.
If you’ve enjoyed her previous titles you’ll love her newest.
