I felt some parts were out of place or unnecessary. The story did go back and forth with timelines so it gives you an idea of childhood through adulthood. It was an interesting read overall.
Minka Kent has had some big winners for me (The Thinnest Air, When I Was You); this one falls a bit short. It is pretty good, nothing spectacular, but not bad either.
This is told in alternating POV of sisters Celia and Genevieve, and both in past and present timelines. Since the story centers on the disappearance of Celia I went in expected more chapters from her POV but it worked out well to have the big chunk of Gen chapters in the middle as it left what exactly happened to Celia a mystery. When Gen starts investigating her sister's disappearance everyone seems like a suspect. I didn't really expect who the bad guy was until we are presented with a glaringly obvious clue, lol. But I liked that each of the conversations had me guessing.
Thanks to Thomas & Mercer via Netgalley for the early copy to read and review.
In the early morning hours the day after her 40th birthday party, Celia Guest vanishes. In the days after, her husband and estranged sister Genevieve try to make sense of why Celia decided to get on a train at 4am and disappear from her seemingly perfect life with great friends and successful loving husband. The long hidden past starts to bubble to the surface and Genevieve comes to understand thatCelia had it far worse growing up than had ever been known.
I've come to know Minka Kent as an author I will read every book she writes. This was full of interesting twists and characters that were likable and believable. I was sucked in instantly, knew there was a hidden past about to be revealed and the pages flew in order for me to find out. It was juicy and evil. I so thought I had it figured out but was wrong.
Notable trigger warnings:
Violence against women
Traumatic birth
Violence against minors
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read in exchange for my honest review. As always, I loved this most recent Minka Kent thriller,!
This time next week, I'll be gone.
We are introduced to Celia 25 years ago, suffering in her fire and brimstone religious family. She has to find a way out no matter what.
In the present, she's turning 40 and had a little shindig. She's still shy about opening things in front of others so later that night, she's going through gifts and happily reading cards from friends when she stumbles across a folded letter that says she doesn't deserve what she has.
While she doesn't necessarily disagree, she can't imagine who at her party knows all about her past and why they'd want to hurt her this way. Suddenly everyone looks suspicious!
This was a quick read but it was about religion way more than I expected.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher!
Another page turner from Minka Kent! Three sisters raised in an ultra-religious home are brought together when something happens to one of them. Fast paced and twisty!
This was a weird read. Some parts were harder to read that others. Lots of triggering situations to some, I would presume. And some parts where you kind of wish it would just get to the end so we know where this is going. I definitely didn’t see the big twist coming, and then kicking myself because it was all kind of set up for you to see. Again, lot of triggers and lots to unpack with this one.
This book is why I love Minka Kent. I could not put this one down. I had to know what was going to happen. I loved the past and present views of Celia and Gen. I loved how Gen stepped up to make sure her sister was found and that in the end, the sisters came together to be a family. Down with the horrible dad!
This. Book. Minka Kent has crafted such a twisty, turny novel that kept me turning the page till I finished. I read this book in two days and I could not put it down.
If you like complicated family thrillers, this is the book for you!
Couldn’t put it down! Was my first Minka Kent novel and I look forward to reading more. There are several good twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. Some of the plot lines are a bit unbelievable and distracting but others are better developed and more compelling to follow.
Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the opportunity to read this ARC.
The book started off with a great plot, woman gets mystery note after her 40th birthday, decides to go to NYC for a while to decompress then is mugged. Her family is frantic with her disappearance. Her somewhat estranged sister starts looking into her disappearance and the past comes to a head.
I liked the concepts in the book the MC’s past growing up in a ultra strict religious household, running away with a 30 year old when she was 18 and starting a new life. She begins talking to her little sister again but refuses to acknowledge her youngest sister who was 2 when she ran away.
This books could have been so much more than it was. So many of the concepts were not matched up well. There were many missed opportunities to make this a book you’re constantly on the edge of your seat for.
All in all, I liked the book but would push readers to read something else from the author over this one.
2.5 stars
This was an easy, quick read, but one that I have found hard to review. I really liked this author's book, The Stillwater Girls, and a few of her other books as well. However, this one missed the mark for me. The premise was a good one; hidden secrets between three sisters that were raised in a strict religious household with a cruel domineering father. The resulting mystery was an intriguing one, but the pacing of the story was off and some of the actions and interactions of a few of the characters was questionable. Overall, the anticipation of suspense and mystique was just not there for me.
My sincere thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer Publishing for giving me the opportunity to read and review a digital ARC of this book.
Minka Kent is a favorite thriller author of mine as her books have original characters you can relate to and plots that are mysterious and make you want to keep reading. This one was not a favorite as it seemed to be mostly about family relationships and the main character and main plotting weren't centered enough in the story. The book starts out with Celia returning home from her 40th birthday party. She is married to Rob who is 58 and they have a happy marriage. She had mixed feelings about the party especially since her younger sister Genevieve did not attend. When she opens her gifts she receives a note saying "You don't deserve this" and that notes sets off the action of the book.
Celia does not know who sent the note and the next day she decides to take a train to the city (New York) to think. There her story stops for a bit and we then hear from Genevieve who is trying to help Rob find his wife. The story talks a lot about the abusive childhood these sisters had along with a much younger sister Celeste. The parents were heavily involved with a fundamentalist church and raised the daughters (mostly Celia) with vicious beatings and being locked in a dark storage unit.. There are a number of scenes where Genevieve meets with friends of Celia but none of them know anything so these meetings seemed useless. as they didn't present anything new to the reader except one woman's gossip that turned out to be untrue. We later find out some things about Celia''s childhood that have affected her as an adult but there were some things never explained that didn't make sense to me. These parents didn't celebrate holidays of any sort and were vicious and hateful but then it is mentioned they randomly took the daughters to DisneyWorld. We never really find out why Celia took a random trip to NY and checked into a cheap motel or who attacked her. I did find Celia to be a likable character and like Kent's style of writing but this was just an average read for me. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a free book in exchange for a review.
Minka Kent is a go to author for me and I adore every book she writes. This one is FABULOUSLY CREEPTASTIC. Unputdowable and immensely enjoyable! Read this book!
I want to thank NetGalley and Minka Kent for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
After inhaling The Silent Woman, Unmissing, and Stillwater Girls, I was eager to read an ARC copy of Gone Again. Kent has become one of my favorite binge-reads and this had lots of the twists that come with Kent's books.
The story revolves around Celia and Genevieve and is told from both of their perspectives as sisters growing up in a strict Christian household with their third sister, Celeste. I don't usually do well with time-jumping, but I felt that Kent made is seamless. It's mostly told through Genevieve's point of view, as Celia goes missing after a random attack.
Though I've loved all of Kent's previous novels, this one fell a bit flat for me, while still being a great read. I felt like the end was rushed. We never really learned who attacked her, we never really learn who left her the note on her birthday. We're lead to believe that it was her sister, Celeste, but nothing felt confirmed. We were randomly introduced to her friend Isabel and their tumultuous relationship, but that too was dropped.
That being said, this still kept me guessing and audibly gasping at points and I highly recommend it. Can't wait to read what Kent has next!
Thank you NetGalley, Minka Kent, and Thomas & Mercer for this ARC. This was a quick, good read that started a little slow but definitely picked up with a great ending. The author did a great job of telling the story through different perspectives with flash backs woven in. I give this book 4.5 stars, I can’t wait to see what Minka Kent writes next!
3.5 rounded up. Started out slowly but did pick up. Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book
Another amazing Minka Kent story!! I live for her books.
As if turning 40 was a big deal in itself, Celia finds herself entangled in a mystery with her estranged sister.
Just when you think you know where the story is going, it takes a hard left turn somewhere else. So hard to do reviews for Minka Kent books without giving away and plot twists but this book has edge of your seat thrills.
Minka Kent has been one of my favorites and she never disappoints! This book was amazing and I can’t wait to read another amazing book by her!
Book Title: Gone Again
Author: Minka Kent
Publisher: Thomas & Mercer
Genre: Mystery Thriller
Pub Date: March 7, 2023
My Rating: 3.2 is Stars!
When I read " Unmissing" in November 2021, my comment was that I was looking forward to my next Minka Kent novel!
Celia Guest is actually looking forward to turning forty and has everything she wants beautiful and great friends and has received tons of well wishes for her birthday. But one note isn’t wishing her a Happy Birthday but states ~ You don’t deserve any of this!”
Then the next morning she disappears.
~ This got my attention~
She and her sister Genevieve grew up in with strict parents and both felt unloved. Story is told from the POV of both ~ present and past.
I did like getting to know Celia and I liked the Epilogue. This wasn’t a 4 star read for me. I am not generous with giving stars - to me 3 =Good. 4= Better 5= Best!
Want to thank NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for this early eGalley.
Publishing Release Date scheduled for March 7, 2023
Kent has written a quick gripping read about a woman who grew up disappearing from her religious fanatic abusive family. Celia hid in places around the house, and finally ran away at age 18.
The book opens after her 40th birthday party. After she receives a note, she is gone again. Where to?
