I went into Debra Webb's "The Nature of Secrets" with a bit of a chip on my shoulder. I'll admit it: police procedurals and I? We're not exactly besties. It's like trying to get me excited about watching paint dry, only the paint is evidence collection and interview transcripts. So, yeah, that definitely colored my experience.
The book plops you right into the middle of Colton, Alabama, where a murder has shaken up the peace. Detective Kerri Devlin is on the case, and Webb does a solid job of setting up a classic small-town mystery. Everyone's got a secret, and nobody's quite telling the whole truth.
Here's the thing: Webb knows how to write a mystery. There were twists and turns, and I did find myself trying to guess who the culprit was. But honestly? I just found myself getting bogged down in the details. All the "she analyzed the fiber," and "he cross-referenced the database" stuff? My eyes just glazed over. I know, I know, that's the point of a procedural, but it's just not my jam.
Kerri was…fine. A capable detective, for sure. But I didn't feel a real connection to her. She felt like a character I'd seen a million times before, just with a different name. And the supporting cast? They were there, but they didn't exactly stick with me after I put the book down.
The ending felt a bit…meh. Like, it was a logical conclusion, but it didn't give me that "whoa!" moment. I was hoping for something that would make me forget my procedural-induced eye-rolling, but it just didn't happen.
Look, if you love police procedurals, you'll probably enjoy this book more than I did. Webb knows her stuff, and the mystery is well-constructed. But if you're like me, and you'd rather read about characters than crime scene analysis, you might want to look elsewhere. It's a solid 2.5 stars from me, rounded up to 3 because, hey, maybe it's just me being a procedural grump.

I loved this book. Idk why it took me so long to read it it. But it was so good! I need the physical copy. It literally had me in from sentence one.

Another great Finley O’Sullivan novel! I love the thriller aspect mixed with the detective/investigative part. It just makes you want to keep reading to find out what happens next. Can’t wait for Book 3!

My biggest struggle with this novel is that it's the second book in a series and I haven't read the first one. While most of this novel is a struggle, it does end on a feel good note. It just wasn't really my cup of tea

Thank you to Netgally, the publishers, and Debra Webb
When I requested this book I was unaware that it was apart of a series, one that requires you to read the previous books for this one to make sense. I am unable to read all the previous books along with this one before the publish date. Therefore, I will rate this a fair 3/5 stars and will adjust the rating and review when I am able to read all the books in the series along with this one.

Debra Webb never disappoints. She masterfully develops characters and expertly keeps the reader engaged from the first word the the very last.

Debra Webb's "The Nature of Secrets" plunges readers into a gripping tale of suspense and mystery, where legal investigator Finley O'Sullivan navigates the treacherous waters of deception and betrayal. Following a year marked by personal tragedy, Finley's professional resolve is put to the test as she delves into the murky depths of a high-profile murder case.
The narrative unfolds with Finley tasked with defending Ellen Winthrop, a powerful figure in the financial world accused of murdering her husband. As Finley immerses herself in the intricacies of the case, doubts begin to surface about Ellen's innocence, leading her to confront uncomfortable truths about the Winthrops' marriage and the possibility of a pattern of violence.
Webb's skillful storytelling keeps readers on the edge of their seats, weaving a complex web of revenge, uncertainty, and lies. Despite my initial skepticism towards book series centered around police procedural or private investigators, Webb's masterful execution had me utterly enthralled from start to finish.
The character development of Finley O'Sullivan is particularly noteworthy, as she grapples with her own demons while relentlessly pursuing justice for her clients. Webb adeptly explores themes of resilience and determination, making Finley a compelling and relatable protagonist.
From the immersive plot to the dark and suspenseful atmosphere, "The Nature of Secrets" delivers a satisfying reading experience that leaves readers craving for more. Webb's knack for crafting intricate plots and keeping readers guessing until the very end is evident throughout the book, making it a must-read for fans of suspenseful thrillers.
Overall, "The Nature of Secrets" is a captivating and exhilarating read that will keep you glued to the pages until the final twist. I devoured this book in half a day, thoroughly enjoying every moment of the thrilling journey it took me on. Thank you to NetGalley & Thomas & Mercer for providing an ARC of this enthralling novel.

This book was really good. I enjoyed it a lot. I love how well it is written. I enjoyed the characters.

Debra Webb is one of my favorite authors! She always creates and waves such an intriguing plot that often has you putting your detective hat on thinking you've figured it out. But you never do! I absolutely love Finley. She's a strong woman full of a lot of unresolved trauma that starts getting figured out in the Nature of Secrets. I enjoy her and Matt's friendship that is turning into more and her relationship with Jack. Ellen, the vigilante protagonist kept you guessing the entire book! Outstanding

I did not finish this one, it was not for me, I couldn't relate to the characters, and just did not care for the story.

I think this could've been a higher star read for me if I read the first installment in the series. I don't think I would read this as a standalone. BUT I did think this was a great legal thriller and it was super entertaining. I'm definitely considering reading the first book.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC.

This book captivates readers once again with a heart-pounding story of deceit and homicide. Focused on the relentless legal investigator, Finley, the book immerses us in her challenging mission to exonerate Ellen Winthrop, accused of her spouse's brutal killing.
Webb's masterful storytelling effortlessly intertwines a gripping narrative, brimming with unexpected revelations that will keep readers hooked until the final pages. With a resilient female lead and an intricate tapestry of hidden truths to unravel, this compelling novel is an absolute must-read for enthusiasts of suspenseful legal thrillers.

This book was just not for me and I ended up having to put it down and choosing to DNF it unfortunately, but thankful for receiving the ARC. I see why people liked it though it just wasn't for me.

The second series book was absolutely delectable. Webb never fails for a suspenseful thriller and unique plots when it comes to the absolute fun and intriguing mystery. Full of revenge, uncertainty, and lies leaves Finley more determined to find out what happened to well-connected millionaire Ellen Winthrop's young husband. Finley has a difficult time not letting her own difficult year and finding the men responsible for her husbands death not get in the way of the current case. Because even though her and her Uncle's firm were hired for Ellen's innocence, as she digs, it seems less and less likely she's as innocent as she claims.
It's funny because I'm not one for book series, especially police procedural or private investigators, etc. but this author has me absolutely enthralled with her books just for how she writes, her plots she weaves & always leaving me shook! I shamelessly devoured this book in half a day with nothing been done and I have no regrets. It's epic, as her first; captivating, rooting for Ellen as the plot unfolds and becomes more intricate and deep. It's satisfying, excitingly dark and a salaciously teeth-sinking revenge type novel leave you wanting more!
Thank you to NetGalley & Thomas & Mercer for this ARC!

As Finley digs deeper into the case, doubts about Ellen's innocence arise, unveiling a dark history of potential spousal murders. Prepare to lose sleep as you immerse yourself in this captivating tale of deception, betrayal, and the quest for truth.

Debra Webb is a master. Incredibly good this sequel to the Finley O'Sullivan series. I cannot wait for All the Little Truths to come out at the end oft the year. When authors have like a gazillion books out, sometimes I doubt wether to read anything by them or not... I was proved wrong by my little inside voice that is very opinionated and sometimes not so nice. I am glad I gave this series a chance. Now I'm a fan.

Thank you to Netgalley, the publishing house and the author for the opportunity to read a complimentary copy of this book in return for a review based upon my honest opinion.
This author always writes a great book. This is book two in the Finley O'Sullivan series and it is just as good as the first book in the series, if not better. Finley O'Sullivan might be one of my new favourite characters.
Still reeling from the brutal death of her husband and assault of herself, Finley is trying to get on with her life. But Finley just cannot let things lie and finds herself not able to let the matter go. Meanwhile, she and her boss, Jack get a new client, a very rich, self made woman whose husband has just been found murdered and for whom she stands most likely to be accused of his murder. Finley starts delving into Miss Winthrope's life and finds that perhaps she and her client have some things in common. Great book with lots of action and a great storyline. Cannot wait to see where Finley's story goes next.

Thank you NetGalley and Thomas &Mercer for this ARC. I was happy to ready about Finley O’Sullivans newest adventure and I can’t wait to see where her story goes next!

I received this book from net galley. Did not realize it was the second book in a series. So on that note, this book was okay. The story line was good. It did give a little background info from the first book so I wasn't totally lost. I think I would have enjoyed it more had i read them in order.
