This sequel to the Last Lie Told is even better than the first installation of the Finley O'Sullivan mystery series. Webb has created an intricate mystery for Finley to solve which brings up many issues in Finley's own life. What is compelling in this story is that as Finley works to solve the latest mystery, she can't help but see parallels to her own life. Finley is still dealing with the death of her husband and all of the guilt associated with it on top of the burning question of whether she truly knew her husband at all. Hence, there are two cases to captivate the reader. Highly recommend in particular if you enjoyed the first book in the series!

Legal investigator Finley O’Sullivan has had a difficult year in the wake of her husband’s murder. But in her line of work, there’s no time to grieve. Her job is to protect the firm’s clients and defend their innocence through grueling investigative work.
Ellen Winthrop is a force to be reckoned with in the financial world. In a male-dominated industry, she shattered the glass ceiling by empowering and promoting women. But now her husband is dead, killed in the Winthrop family home and she stands accused of his murder.
Finley, as the investigator at the firm Ellen Winthrop hired to defend her, has a clear objective: prove that Ellen didn’t do it. But the deeper Finley digs into the Winthrops’ marriage, the more she starts to doubt Ellen’s story. The uncomfortable truth is that Ellen Winthrop may in fact have killed her husband.
And he might not have been the first.
Really enjoyable read totally recommend

Finley O’Sullivan is an investigator in for a law firm. Her husband was murdered and she was brutally raped, and she is searching behind the scenes for the reason behind her husband's murder.
In the case that she is investigating, there is a very wealthy woman who is accused of her husband's murder, and Finley does her best to find out who the murderer was, and why. However, the more she uncovers, the more certain she is that Ellen Winthrop is not innocent.
She also finds out why her husband was murdered and why.

This book was well plotted and flowed very well. I liked Finley and felt that the character was very compassionate because of what had happened in her life.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is the second book in the Finley O'Sullivan series but can be read as a stand-alone. I really enjoyed it. The author did an exceptional job of creating relatable, flawed characters who read like actual people.
Finley experiences a very traumatic event in her life which leads her down a different path than the one she was loving before the murder of her husband. No longer a practicing lawyer, she now lives in the "Murder House" and is an investigator for her godfather's law firm. Finley is very good at her job and will do almost anything to help her godfather win his case. Their current case involves a wealthy woman accused of murdering her husband. As Finley investigates the case, she is also still grieving the death of her husband and trying to find revenge on who was involved.
The story is so well written and lets you see into the world of investigating a crime and how deep you have to look to put it all together. It is so much more than mystery thriller, it is also a love story, the story of family drama, unexpected loss, processing grief, the nature of forgiveness, as well as starting over.
I think this book would be appealing to a wider variety of audience than your usual crime read. Everything about this book worked for me.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

This is a great example of how a thriller should read! You have not just one crime but multiple. Some tie in together but not all. You follow along with an investigator as she uncovers a string of unsettling events that take this case in different directions. And through it all, you consider the difference between law and justice.

Finley is a disgraced former ADA who emotionally fell apart after the murder of her husband. She struggles with the after-affects of her own assault, while questioning whether she even knew her husband at all. She tries to make a new life for herself as an investigator, but her mind is still processing the facts like an ADA. This makes her great at her job, but also puts her in danger. Meanwhile, she continues to search out information on those who attacked her and murdered her husband. She is not a vigilante, but her depth of loss drives her into very dangerous places,

Ellen is a very successful, intelligent and methodical woman suspected of murdering her husband. The first question is 'did Ellen kill him?' Then you question who was this man that was murdered? Who was the crime really against? And you again question the difference between law and justice.

Even though the case is solved, you still have broken people that have to put back the pieces of their lives and find new purpose. The supporting characters, such as the friend Matt, the friend and boss Jack, and even Mom the Judge, add such a richness to Finley's emotional stress that you relate to her doubts and decisions. The ending was perfect because there is no tidy little bow, and it leaves the door open to more in the series. I really hope that Finley's story continues!

A most excellent book! Finley O'Sullivan, a legal investigator, sets out to find evidence to support the innocence of a high-profile client at her law firm... but her digging is made unreasonably hard when all signs begin to point to her client, Ellen Winthrop, being heavily involved in the murder.

I found Finley to be an wonderfully written character. It's not often that I find a narrator/main character with the same delicate balance between competent go-getter and unmitigated disaster. Usually, books seem to take their main characters to one extreme or the other, and it makes for an unrealistic, overly quirky, and sometimes downright unreadable book. Debra Webb, however, has achieved a perfect balance worthy of the gods, and lemme tell you, it makes all the difference. I couldn't put down this book.

Characters were super compelling, and I loved the little details of the family and web of connections Finley has surrounded herself with. Jack and Matt, Jack especially, were delightful. All the little plot details that came up through the course of the book were resolved, and I loved the brief but telling chapters from the other characters' POV. This book exudes feminist energy, but not in an overbearing way, and I loved how different the plot to this book was compared to the other books I've read. It's a different perspective, but I good one, and I couldn't put this book down from the get-go.

4.5 stars, because I did find the constant comparisons between Finley and Ellen Winthrop to be slightly forced and fabricated. The narrative itself, however, was excellent and very detailed. I highly recommend this book.

The Nature of Secrets by Debra Webb is a book definitely full of secrets. This is book 2 in the Finley O’Sullivan series and is about a well-connected woman who stands accused of her husband’s murder. She’s innocent—unless Finley proves otherwise. A lot is going on in the story, which is quite intriguing. The author is able to develop the characters with good writing and an engaging storyline.

There is a good amount of suspense and "secrets" to keep me interested and engaged. Finley is a strong character, and we get to learn more about her and what happened to her in the first book.

I look forward to more books in this series and recommend this book and this author. A solid 4 out of 5 stars. It took me a bit to get into the story, but once I got past the first couple of chapters, I was hooked.

Thank you NetGalley and Debra Webb for this opportunity to read this. I was gripped right from the start, the opening chapter is not for the faint hearted. Not all superheros wear red capes and some don't have a choice but to keep going. I loved that the main character didn't give up on the case and herself considering how hard these past years have been for her. Brilliant book.

I was very excited to be given the opportunity for an early read of this second book in the Finley O'Sullivan saga. This book picks up where "The Last Lie Told" leaves off. Finley is still suffering from her husbands murder a ittle over a year ago. While she continues to watch the three men involved in her husbands murder and her beating and rape, they are watching her too.

Finley gets involved with the murder of Ellen Winthrop's husband as an investigator with Jack's law firm. Finley is investigating all she can so that they can be prepared when Ellen is charged with the murder. During this investigation and her own personal life investigation, things blow up.

There is a lot of suspense and more murders and more lies and secrets than you could have imagined and they all lead to a really amazing ending. I had no idea where all this was going to end up and I love the way the author's protagonist doesn't seem to know either. We get to view through Finley's eyes and mind.

I loved the first novel in this series and this second one, even more so. Truly the best ending!! Thank you NetGalley and Thomas and Mercer for this early read.

I love this author's writing, you can always expect good, strong characters, and a strong and intriguing plot (with lots of twists) so I was thrilled to be able to read this author's newest book early. I look forward to each new story from her and each time I say the same thing..."This was the Best YET!"...but it is always true, she outdoes herself with each new book.
This book knocked my socks off! So full of action, duplicity, secrets, and surprises, everything you want from a good thriller...but this book had so much more with emotional shockwaves that carry you through from start to finish.
I don't normally do a synopsis of the book in my reviews but I will tell you this, this is book 2 in the Finley O’Sullivan series, and questions will be answered, but, oh, the rollercoaster ride you are in for in getting to those answers! You really don't want to miss this book!

I’m gonna be honest…it took me a wee bit to get back into the swing of this series. Then…BOOM 💥, I was hooked and could not put it down.

What a ride. Holy Smokes. I need more.

There was so much going on. And man Finley is so dang smart. I love her guts and tenacity. She is
a bada$$. I’m looking forward to more. Debra Webb is truly a master storyteller, and just when you think you got it all pegged she flips you over and makes you scratch your head. She gives me whiplash!

Book 2 in the new Finley O'Sullivan series by Debra Webb. This one started out a little slow for me, especially compared to book 1. However, the author did not disappoint! Once it picked up, this one kept me guessing for a while. Like the first one, it was dark and gritty. I love Finley's character.. I loved the twist at the end, and I can't wait to see where life leads her next!

The Nature of Secrets is book two in the Finley O’Sullivan series by Debra Webb
In my opinion this series is one of her best. I've enjoyed reading Finley's story and following her in this journey.
She is a legal investigator and one badass woman.
She is smart, determined and relatable.
I loved the storyline and the characters are very likeable.
Webb creates surprise after surprise with twists that definitely made this a page turner.
A fantastic story that had me hooked from page one and I tore through it as fast as I could.
I can't wait for book three.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review "The Nature of Secrets" by Debra Webb. This is the second book in the Finley O'Sullivan series, and starts up right where the first book left off - with Finley trying to get to the bottom of her personal hell, while investigating the newest case to come to her firm.
When Ellen Winthrop - a financial genius who heads an all-female firm - comes home to find her young husband brutally murdered on their bathroom floor, all signs point to the wife. But she has an air-tight alibi which the investigating officers will try to break, and Jack and Finley will have to investigate, along with all other avenues.
At the same time, there are further developments as to what her late husband may or may not have been up to, along with more retribution.
But, as usual, all is not as it seems, and as Finley delves deeper and deeper into Ellen's late husband, Jarrod, a web of deceit, lies and crimes and misdeeds begins to unravel, leading her to the ultimate conclusion while simultaneously bringing to light past wrongs which have been righted.
At the same time, Finley begins to uncover more evidence which will slowly lead her to the light, as far as what Derrick had been up to, and why 'that night' and its consequences happened. And the evidence points exactly as she thought - bringing this part of her life to a close.
Highly recommended, and you don't really have to read the first book, "Last Lie Told", but it wouldn't hurt for some further background.

I have read both books in this series. I can honestly say they are the best fiction books I have read in years. The characters are very well drawn..I could almost see them living their lives in the pages of this book. They were real and flawed humanity without being dark snd hopeless. This book had a real and believable plot. A plot so well thought out that the pace of the book was perfect. I believe this would make a great movie or pilot for a series. Several of the main characters have the strength and force of character to make writing scripts for them easy. I have tried to write this review in such a way as to not give even a hint of a spoiler because you will want to savor every word on your own. Congratulations to this author for giving us a story well worth reading.
