This is an excellent mystery, an original plot and two heroines to root for. A police detective who works within the system and outside of it, who is tracking a serial killer of young boys, her son included. And the woman, she works with a criminologist, a psychologist and a sociopath, who is helping get her out of jail. Very interesting, twisty and lots to think about with this one.
This series is just...wow. I loved seeing a (slightly) softer side of Gretchen in this book, and the progression of her friendship with Lauren. As usual, the plot kept me guessing, and I was riveted to see how it would all end. Highly recommend!
Gretchen White quickly became my favorite sociopath. This book was full of unexpected twists and a great ending. I hope it’s not the last we’ll see of Gretchen.
My favourite sociopath is back on the scene and I couldn't be more excited.
When Det. Lauren Marconi is found guilty of murder - one that she herself has owned up to - criminologist and self-confessed sociopath Dr. Gretchen White refuses to accept it. After all, had an astute detective like Marconi been the killer, she never would have gotten caught. She decides to get to the root of the case and dives headfirst into Lauren's past that is mired in secrets, stalkery and serial killers.
I cannot stress enough how much I have enjoyed each book in the Gretchen White series. Gretchen's sarcasm is hilarious and her thought process - a sociopath trying to fit into normal society - is fascinating. If I thought Gretchen's banter with Shaughnessy and Marconi in the previous books were engaging, the verbal exchange between her and the strait-laced Lachlan were downright laudable. Though I was familiar with the author's flair for suspense build-up and multiple plot twists from her previous books, I must say that she has simply outdone herself in this one.
While the previous books portrayed Gretchen as a stoic sociopath with no emotional connection to anyone, Book 3 reveals a more evolved Gretchen - fiercely loyal to her friend Lauren to the point of bending rules and breaking the law to prove her innocence - albeit with the same sting and sarcasm in her words.
Overall, a fantastic sequel to a brilliant series. Thanks to Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for providing a digital copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Gretchen White is the polar opposite of what someone would expect of a beloved character. However, she is very beloved...to me. I've enjoyed watching her development over the past two books and despite her innate prickliness, I find her a goshdang delight. On that note, I appreciated that with this book, we got a better look into Lauren Marconi.
Love this author! Great character development. I especially have enjoyed seeing the change in Gretchen over the course of the three books. What a complex character! I really hope this wasn't the end of the series. I'd love to see more.
Brianna Labuskes' "See It End" is a thrilling and enticing read. The central plot is around Detective Lauren Marconi's past, and the puzzle pieces of her sudden erratic behaviour and past conduct come together. This is the third book of the Dr Gretchen White series and qualifies as a standalone (this is my first book by the author). However, I strongly suggest that readers go back to books one and two to understand these remarkable and well-fleshed-out characters better.
Dr Gretchen White is one of the best characters I have read. Most crime/suspense books follow the linear path of revealing one of their characters being a sociopath. But what happens if the tables are turned, and we have individuals who strives to make integral choices based on their coping mechanisms? Her brilliance, wit and sarcasm are unmatched, and her moments of doubt and frustration are well-written. The supporting characters and the list of suspects are carefully and cleverly woven into the plot, and the twists and turns are well-timed and genuinely shocking.
Fans of psychology, mystery, thriller and the classic whodunit, please do not skip this one.
Thank you, NetGalley & Thomas and Mercer, for giving me an ARC. This honest review is left voluntarily.
I have enjoyed this series thus far and found this one to be the best installment yet! The character development in book 3 was phenomenal. I loved the dual timeline and the deep dive into Marconi’s story. This series feature unique, complex characters and interesting plot lines. I look forward to the next in the series!
Oh my gosh another series but you can totally read this stand alone. I can see how if I’d read the first book there would have been more details on Dr Gretchen White, but honestly it did work for me. I didn’t feel like I was lacking in any details by picking this one up out of order.
Criminologist Dr. Gretchen White thought Detective Lauren Marconi could never cross certain ethical lines, but one day Dr White gets a call from Marconi saying “I did it”. Of course, Dr White is going to investigate. With Detective Marconi in jail, Dr White teams up with the jerk of a detective Lachlan Gibbs. As the investigation progresses Dr. White keeps getting more and more questions thrown at her and fewer and fewer answers. Will she be able to get to the bottom of things before time runs out for Marconi?
This book comes in at about 380 pages but its such a fast read and you won’t want to put it down! If this is how the rest of this authors books are written, then I have found a new favorite. This one is the third book in the Dr. Gretchen White series, and it is explosive! I guess in the other two books, Marconi helps Dr White out – unlike this one, so I am excited to read them. This book is expertly written, and keeps you engaged the entire time. There wasn’t a dull moment.
If you’re looking for a fun ride that won’t disappoint, then check this one out April 18th of next year! The publisher, Thomas & Mercer, and @netgalley, provided me this e-arc copy for review
he third installment of the Dr. Gretchen White series, hopefully not the last and just as recommended as the first two.
This time the mystery is centered on Marconi’s past. Lauren Marconi, the BPD detective is the closest thing Gretchen has to a best friend, and partly because of that Gretchen is compelled to investigate the murder for which Lauren is arrested for plus because Lauren personally told her not to – so she teams up with Laurens IA boyfriend Lachlan Gibbs to prove that Lauren is innocent of the charges.
In the process we learn a bit more of Marconi's backstory and we see why/how she is able to cope with Gretchen’s ways unlike almost everyone else Gretchen interacts with. We also see the effect of Marconi on Gretchen in that she has more success in understanding and relating to what she calls being an “empath”.
Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for an ARC of See It End in exchange for an honest review
I was super excited to see another book in the Gretchen White series. The first two were really good and though technically this could be read as a standalone, you will understand a lot more if you read the first two books before this one publishes.
This time things are turned upside down. It’s usually Lauren who helps Gretchen. Not this time. Lauren has killed someone and tells Gretchen to leave the case alone. Yeah right, not going to happen with Gretchen. Turns out Gretchen isn’t the only one with a horrifying past. This one kept me guessing page after page. I’m going to stop talking about the story now to avoid shark infested spoiler waters.
Another fast paced twisty story and I only hope that this isn’t the last we see of these two. Gretchen is one of the most unique characters I’ve come across and I hope the author has more for her to say.
I've been following this series since last year and it did not disappoint. It's consistently dark yet enticing but not without salient points that make you think about perspectives on ethics and morality. Again, as with the past 2 books, I'm in this more for the ride than the destination. The author's way of telling the story is such a journey. She employed a multiple person perspective and not once did it become boring or confusing. Another smashing hit from Brianna Labuskes!
I had no idea this was the 3rd instalment in a series, but continued to read this ARC and was not disappointed. This book could act as a standalone, as it mentioned previous storylines but gave no spoilers. I immediately located the 1st and 2nd books from this series, also plan to read more from this author. Great premise of the Professional female lead, her Sociopathic traits and childhood trauma.
I requested this without realizing this was a series. I felt like I was missing some important parts while reading this. I want to read the series in order and revisit this later as the writing was intriguing.
As for the first two books in the series, I loved this new installment of the Gretchen White's story.
She's so interesting and enthralling that her interactions with the other characters and her actions are never 100% predictable.
"See it End" concentrates on Marconi and, since she's my second favorite characters in the series, I appreciated the chance to get to know her past. However what I did miss from this book was Gretchen and Marconi banter and their chemistry.
I really hope it won't be the end for this series because I'm not ready to say goodbye to this (anti)heroine and all the messes she get into!
At last I'd like to thank the author and the editor for the chance to read the book for free through this platform.
Brianna Labuskes has written a dark, edgy, multi-layered murder mystery with See It End. Her writing is flawless, and her unusual characters are well drawn.
Though this is the third book in the series featuring Detective Lauren Marconi and Criminologist Dr. Gretchen White, the story stands well on its own. It's told from the POV of Gretchen White, a non-violent sociopath, whose personality is brilliant and disturbing in equal measure. I was able to appreciate the author's writing skills despite being unnerved by the inner workings of Gretchen's mind and the subject matter of serial child murders.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Thomas and Mercer for providing an ARC to read for review. This review will appear on Bayside Book Reviews at https://baysidebookreviews.com and its Instagram page on release day. *NetGalley Top Reviewer*
Absolutely fabulous story. It really hooked me in from page one. Finished the book in less than a day. This was my first exposure to the author. Once I found out this was the third book in a series I had to go back to read from the first book.
This is a story about a police detective and a psychologist consultant for the police that know each other so well that when Lauren a police detective comes to see Gretchen to let her know she is guilty of murder and for her not to investigate,Gretchen is convinced Lauren is taking the blame for someone else.
Will Gretchen find out what is going on and why Lauren turned herself in for a murder? Why does Lauren want Gretchen to stay away from this? Who is the man Lauren is supposed to have murdered and why? This book will keep you on the edge of your seat! Truly enjoyed the book. Thank you netgalley for complimentary copy.
This was a propulsive, fast and intense ride, I was all in on this one and binged as fast as I could! Bravo, 4 stars from me!
I'm really loving this series and I couldn't put this one down! Gretchen is one of the most fascinating characters I've ever read. There's mystery, suspense, and so much more. It kept me guessing. I was still guessing right up to the reveal and I love that! This is one of my must read authors and this book shows why. Highly recommend this one.
Gifted Criminologist..
The third in the Dr Gretchen White series and more murder, mystery and mayhem is about to ensue for the gifted criminologist. Nothing is ever as it seems. Distressing and disturbing themes are prevalent so be warned, characters are wholly credible and the narrative immersive with the main protagonist continuing to shine throughout.
