I got this book before reading more about the Enneagram origins, partially due to Mama Bear Apologetics. I now know why parts of it resonated with me and why some of it didn't seem to fit. I think that this book has some good insight, but I also think that the Enneagram should be looked at with some caution.
Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I have always been interested in how your personality and astrology plays a role in your relationships with others. I was intrigued by this book as I am currently engaged and looking to self help books to prepare us as much as possible for marriage. This workbook was easy to understand and helpful as we discuss how we want our marriage to look like.
Thank you NetGalley and Baker Books for this eARC in exchange for my honest review.
I originally thought it was a regular book, but it's an actual workbook that takes you and your spouse/partner through 7 weekly activities.
It does take a lot more than just love to keep a marriage alive. I loved how Jackie Brewster touched on "unspoken expectations." I feel as though this is such an important aspect. Both people in a marriage must communicate expectations early on. I also appreciated how building a "strong infrastructure" was highlighted. Jackie also points out that it's important to recognize healthy and unhealthy thought patterns and behaviors. Did you know that your patterns of behavior were developed from early childhood?
If you're struggling to communicate with your spouse or partner, develop healthier behavior patterns, or just trying to reconnect, I highly suggest this workbook!
I really enjoyed reading through this workbook with my husband and thought the author did a nice job of relating the enneagram types to communication styles within marriage. I would recommend this to couples who want to learn more about themselves, each other, or how to communicate. The only critique I would add is that the section on defense mechanisms seemed underdeveloped. Some of the "defense mechanisms" were more like poor communication styles rather than true defense mechanisms. I had a hard time understanding the takeaways from that section. All in all a really good overview of the enneagram as it relates to relationships.
As a 9 married to a 5, discovering the ennegram has really helped me understand my husband better. This book didn't go into as much detail as I had hoped, but it was still helpful.
I’ve always enjoyed self-improvement / learning books, and in recent years I’ve enjoyed learning more about Enneagram, so even though I am currently going through a divorce, when I saw this book, I knew I wanted to check it out!
While some of it didn’t apply to me, it was an interesting introduction to the enneagram.
This is a good introductory workbook for couples who are new to learning about the enneagram.
I received an ARC from NetGalley. The book will be released on March 21, 2023.
I enjoyed this book as a huge enneagram fan. I found it helpful to go through it with my husband but also learned a lot on my own going through it. I plan to come back to it as a resource, often!
