Halle Jacobs has just secured her ideal position as an investigative reporter for a rising TV production company. She quickly becomes involved in an inquiry regarding an abnormal surge in childhood cancer cases on a housing estate in East London.
With the help of her researcher Todd, she encounters a community that, instead of uniting in the face of this tragedy, is divided by intolerance and racism.
As Halle pushes the investigation forward, she uncovers two family businesses that played a role in constructing the housing estate in the 1980s, both led by dominant patriarchs. While investigating these families, Halle discovers a mother imprisoned for murder, a group of ruthless businessmen, a questionable financial trail, and a daughter eager to uncover the truth behind the two families' connection. Thank you to NetGalley and The Book Guild for providing me with an ARC of this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
Thank you the Book Guild and Netgalley and sorry I took so long to read this amazing book.
I was hooked from the start and couldn't put it down.
So many twists and turns.
Highly recommend.
Colin Wade's novel is an explosive thriller. The plot is the sort of story that would have made headlines in the 'News of the World' a few years ago. It is also an exposé of one of this country's greatest failings at the moment: to provide safe housing in a safe environment for its inhabitants.
Edward Allcock and his sons are characters written in vinegar: misogynistic, racist, crooks, risking lives with their greed and dishonesty.
The story is complex and clever, twisting and turning through four decades, until three women decide to fight back against the Allcock brothers.
It would be a lie to say there is a killer twist at the end, because there are two!
I couldn't wait to finish this book, and read it in one sitting. Plots twists galore from beginning to end. I will read more in future.
Thrilling and utterly compulsive! An incredible read, impossible to put down. Incredible storytelling! Recommend you read this book! A propulsive read that never let me go from start to finish!
A racy thriller, tackling a conspiracy that has been going on for years. Halle is on her first investigative reporter job. She meets some strong characters, both good and bad, leading to an explosive finale.
Excellent, fast paced thriller, with great characters. Addictive read which I loved!
This was a book that I devoured in the span of a day because I couldn't put it down. The plot twists were incredible and I loved the story/character development. It's definitely a page-turner and the antagonists are so unlikeable and thoroughly obnoxious (very well-written!) that you really want to keep reading in hopes they get their just dues. Now it's up to you to read it and see what happens...
Started to read this but all the discussion of the men being anti-women and then the talk of racism about one guy put me off the story and I could t finish it. Way to unbelievable re those aspects and ,add me not interested in the story.
This was a great book. I loved every paragraph, every sentence and every word of this masterpiece! I read it in 12 hours, which is a lot for me to do! It had everything and more laid out in the novel! I sure hope he writes more! I am totally hooked!
The Sins of the Father by Colin Wade.
Halle Jacobs has just landed her dream job as an investigative reporter for an up-and-coming TV production company. She is immediately thrust into an investigation about an unusually high number of childhood cancer cases on an East London housing estate.
Ably assisted by her researcher Todd, she is confronted by a community that, rather than pulling together under these distressing circumstances, is torn apart by intolerance and racism. Halle progresses the investigation, identifying two family firms that were involved in the construction of the housing estate back in the 80s. Both firms are run by strong patriarchal figureheads. As she delves deeper into the two families, Halle comes across a mother in prison for murder, a set of ruthless business men, a suspicious money trail and a daughter determined to find out what is going on between the two firms. Will Halle crack this case and expose The Sins of the Father?
Really enjoyable read. Couldn't put it down. 5*.
