Such a cute, fun, fast read. I loved being thrown back into this world. Highly recommended this book to all who read sorcery of thorns!!
LOVE LOVE LOVE this universe! I really enjoyed this novella and hope there will be a full length sequel :)
In the author's note she mentioned that she wrote this due to everyone asking for a second epilogue. So this is an extended epilogue in novella form. I didn't know we could just ask for these things!
This is a 1.5 so maybe there will be a 2. Back in the world of Sorcery of Thorns this is about Elisabeth, Nathaniel and Silas.
This book focuses more on romance and their everyday life in their magical manor house. I love banter and teasing. There were some issues happening with the manor that they were trying to solve so there was still the fantasy and magical in this story.
Would recommend it for those that enjoyed Sorcery of Thorns, for sure!
Thank you turnthepagetours, simonkids, margaret_rogerson for the gifted copy!
This was perfection, so charming, funny, and cozy. It’s a character story driven, especially more focused on the romance of Elizabeth and Nathaniel instead of a big adventure.
A few months have passed since Elizabeth, Nathaniel and Silas saved the world, and their life is now calmer until the manor decides to meddle and keep them hostage inside it. Now they have to find secret rooms and find a way to make the manor happy, instead of drama, this story feels a little more like a fairytale quest, where the characters have to cleverly solve almost impossible tests. This is my request for the author to publish a compilation of fairytales.
What awaits you:
• Lovely romance
• Magical and nosy house with secret chambers
• Sweet found family moments
• More about Nathaniel's family fast
I love to see the relationship between Elizabeth and Nathaniel progressing, they are so adorable and funny, and their banter and teasing keep their relationship healthy and entertaining. I also loved meeting Silas again, he is a little different, and Elizabeth is a little worried; their scenes together were sweet they are now family.
If you loved the first book and want more, this is perfect, it feels like a long epilogue with the right mix between romance and still a dose of mystery.
This book was short and sweet, and I really loved it. I loved getting to see all the loveable characters and their ridiculous magical adventures again. Who knew fighting off a hideous, magical horde of ancient clothing could be so fun...and romantic? Elisabeth and Nathaniel continue to be both adorable and hilarious, and I'm pretty sure it isn't possible to love them any more than I do. Elisabeth's relatability hits me so hard every time, especially with her whole "I'm a massive bookworm but also give me all the swords" vibe. And her love of food. My only wish is that there was more of it.
This was everything I hoped for. If you’re a fan of Sorcery of Thorns then this is a must read. I always wanted Sorcery to be a duology because I loved the story so much. Even though this is short novella it has a perfect extended epilogue feel.
I really enjoyed getting to learn more about Thorn Manor and the magical wards and different rooms. The magic was fun and silly at times. I found myself laughing out loud and I adored seeing Elisabeth work on the grimoires.
It was so much fun seeing the characters interacting together. Silas is amazing as always and I’m so glad we got more time with him. Elisabeth and Nathaniel’s relationship surprised me in a good way. I won’t spoil it but I’m so happy with the ending and I wish we could have seen certain events that would have happened in the future.
Overall this is a great feel good fast read. I highly recommend it. If you needed your Silas, Elisabeth and Nathaniel fix after the cliffhanger ending of sorcery this is for you!
What a great feeling to be back in this world again. I love these characters so much.
While this is a quick read, it does a great job of having a lot happen in the small amount of pages. I loved the relationship between Elisabeth and Nathaniel. I loved the closed and secluded feel of this book while they are all trapped inside Thorn Manor.
Silas, my favorite still, was the absolute BEST in this novella, completely stealing the show.
An absolutely stunning companion to my favorite book of all time, Sorcery of Thorns! Loved getting to go back into this world and it was just as comfy and cozy and whimsical as its predecessor! I want more!
I had mixed feelings on this book. The plot sounded interesting, but it felt like it took awhile to get to it, and it went in circles a bit. The characters were all great, but I hadn’t read book one in awhile and it was very confusing at first.
"There is no such thing as a good demon, mistress. Merely those who have manners, and those who do not."
If fanfic met "where are they now" buzzfeed posts then this would be it. Mysteries of Thorn Manor really and truly read like what a class reunion would dream of being or like a special episode of a tv show. There was so much love and care put into these pages that I just couldn't help but fall in love with these characters.
On the whole it's a pretty fluffy book. All four of them are living together in a manor that's unhappy that Nathaniel hasn't declared his intentions yet with Elisabeth and has decided to close them off from the world until a proper courtship can be made. Alongside that, Nathaniel has a massive sorcerer's ball to host and reporters at his door non stop. There's also the demon Silas now that has joined their fray and Mercy a new maid of the home.
This novella takes us on a tale full of fun moments like hidden ballrooms, wardrobes on the offense and grimoires with allergies. If you liked a Sorcery of Thorns - then you'll love (and need) to read this!
Thank you Margaret for writing some more about them.

Mysteries of Thorn Manor takes place about two months after the epilogue in its predecessor, Sorcery of Thorns. It does not read as a true sequel, which means if someone wants to only read the first story, it would still be complete; however, this was a very fun light-hearted story with a mystery plot and some romance. Elisabeth Scrivener and Nathaniel Thorn are settling into their life at Thorn Manor, except one day the manor shuts itself off from the outside world and they must find out how to fix it.
Not only does Nathaniel and Elisabeth get to shine further in this story, but their demon companion Silas also returns. The novella is full of fun moments between the three characters either through their interactions or through them as individuals. The romance between Elisabeth and Nathaniel blossoms more in this story and I loved their banter. They had great chemistry, and I loved their connection. It is nice catching up with all these characters as they have a great sense of familiarity. I enjoyed that even though it has been a while since I read the first novel, it was easy enough to fall back into the story and be apart of the world again.
Even though the story is not necessary to read, for me, to fully understand the first novel, it is a very enjoyable read and one that is the cherry on top to the original story. The pacing is enjoyable although, like most novellas, I do wish it was longer. The book manages to cover everything well, but I just loved the story and characters where I could read more about them. The stakes in this story aren’t very high, but it still has a sense of mystery and fun. Overall, this was a fun addition to the series and it would be fun to read more adventures involving these characters in the future!
**I give a special thank you to Netgalley and Margaret K. McElderry Books for the opportunity to read this novel. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.**
The beautiful cover perfectly matches this author’s fantastical style of writing. It’s been a little while since I read A Sorcery of Thorns, but it all came rushing back in the first few pages. The author weaves a tale between Elisabeth, Nathaniel, and Silas that leaves me feeling like Elisabeth may have more than one beau. What that just my imagination? There seems to be a lot of hand kissing and declarations of affection. If so, then Elisabeth will have one busy future! I will admit, once my brain went in that direction I did start to question things. Regardless, it was certainly interesting!
Just in case you were unaware, a novella is a short story. This one was about 188 print pages or 105 on my kindle, which is quite short. The story didn’t feel short though, it was very well rounded and quite complete. I just took a look at it on Amazon and I do feel like the kindle price may be a bit expensive for what you get though. This is a light-hearted bit of fun and unless you’re a super-fan, you may want to wait until it goes on sale.
If you are that super-fan and have been jonesing for another Margaret Rogerson story then jump on this one. It will give you a quick fix that will leave you wanting more. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I received a copy of this book through NetGalley and the publisher for an honest review and it was honest.
I have desperately wanted more Elisabeth, Nathaniel and Silas since the moment I got to the last page of Sorcery of Thorns. This is very much a sort of in-between book which gives me some hope for a second in the series. Set a few months after the end of the previous book, it shows how those events have affected the inhabitants of Thorn Manor, so it’s not something that should be read without reading that first.
“When you’ve grown up in a library with talking books for friends, there are some things you don’t think to question.”
Why do I call it an in-between book? Well, sure, there’s a plot (the whole trapped inside the manor bit) but it’s mostly concerned with the relationships between Elisabeth, Nathaniel and Silas. As it’s told mostly from Elisabeth’s POV, there’s a ridiculous amount of (highly enjoyable) lovelorn pining on Elisabeth’s part towards Nathaniel, who is mostly his charming goofball self. She’s also trying to figure out her relationship with Silas, recognizing that while she’ll never be able to trust him like Nathaniel does, she still cares for him in whatever way an immortal demon needs.
“Not every story has a happy ending,” she offered. “But most do, if you’re brave enough to keep reading to the end.”
“How can you be so certain?” He searched her face as though she were a strange, rare marvel—a flower blooming from cobblestones, or an unexpected light in the distant dark.
“I’ve read a lot of them,” she said seriously.”
And that’s what so truly charming about this novella. It’s just chockfull to the brim with love, and not just Elisabeth’s love for the family they’ve made in Thorn Manner. Nearly every action each character takes is a result of love for the others. And there’s a sense of belonging, of feeling like there’s no place you’d rather be, even if that place happens to be a manor surrounded by vicious topiaries. It’s heartwarming and the literary equivalent of a great big hug, and I had a smile on my face for nearly the entire book. Part of that, of course, is the humor interwoven throughout the book, whether that’s Nathaniel’s silly banter with Elisabeth or Silas’ deadpan commentary. There’s also moments of sheer ridiculous fun (the attic! the armor!). I mean, for goodness’ sakes, there’s a possessed dressing gown.
Overall, this is an absolutely exquisite comfort read, and my fingers (and toes) are crossed that the author chooses to revisit Elisabeth, Nathaniel and Silas again!
I received an advance review copy of this book from NetGalley. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
I love Margaret Rogerson. It's really nice to be back with Elisabeth, Nathaniel, and Silas. I love inhabiting their world, and was sad it was only a brief time.
Absolutely loved this novella followup to Sorcery of Thorns!!
I missed my favorite dramatic bisexual, and even injured Nathaniel manages to be his colorful self.
And Silas!!! We don't have too many questions answered, but I loved to see him again, and get more closure around how the first book ended.
This was a charming little story with magic and demons and books!
Absolutely adorable! The cozy fantasy sequel everyone needs in their life. It's incredibly short which made me sad because I wanted to explore the Manor more but it had the sass and coziness that is perfect for sitting in a warm chair next to a snowy window.
Mysteries of Thorn Manor was a really cute novella that showed Elisabeth and Nathaniel's life post the events in Sorcery of Thorns. I always love when we get to see how things are going after a book ends, so I really liked that. And Silas was my favorite, so I loved being able to see him again and to see how he was still manipulating everything. I really enjoy this world, so I'm excited to see what else Margaret Rogerson has in store for us!
I was super excited to see the Sorcery of Thorns trio again, and this novella didn’t disappoint in the slightest! These are some of my favourite characters (from one of my favourite books) and by the end of Sorcery it was incredibly clear that, regardless of romance, this is a trio and they all love each other deeply. This is carried over into this novella in the best possible way. Elisabeth, Nathaniel, and Silas are all given opportunities to shine and all of their relationships with each other are given their time in the spotlight. Rogerson incorporates all this through a relatively lighthearted plot masterfully, and despite the novella’s short length nothing ever felt rushed.
The new addition to the Thorn household, Mercy, didn’t feel like she was intruding at all. She’s not as close to any of them as they are with each other, but Elisabeth is firmly happy to have her around and she fits into the group seamlessly. Silas’ interactions with or about her were also highly entertaining. He makes no secret of how he’d prefer to work alone, but he simply has no say in the matter.
The main plot of this novella is the manor effectively coming to life and trapping the four occupants inside until they can figure out how to make the manor calm down. This led to many humourous moments, some action, and some exploration into the history of both the Thorn family and the manor itself. I really enjoyed learning more about the magic and history of magic in this world! There’s also plenty of romantic moments, which may or may not have a connection to the magic keeping them trapped.
We also learn a bit more about Nathaniel’s immediate family in this book. In Sorcery we learned that his mother and brother had died, and his father had been killed by Silas at some point after this while Nathaniel was still a child. In this novella we learn more about what exactly happened and also what Nathaniel’s family was like before everything went wrong. This is, ultimately, a lighthearted novella, but Rogerson also found room within it to deal with this heavy topic in a way that didn’t feel unnatural or shoehorned in and that didn’t subtract from the overall story.
In what is surely a very popular opinion, Silas is my favourite character in this book/series, and this novella provides extra insight into him as a character which is nothing short of a delight to me! Something in particular that this novella addresses about Silas is how long lived he is. He’s served and made deals with members of the Thorn family for countless generations and there’s no way that Nathaniel and Elisabeth are the first people he’s truly loved. He’s lost a lot of people, and one day he’ll lose Nathaniel and Elisabeth as well. His grief for those he’s lost, and his sort of anticipatory grief for the people he’s yet to lose, is probably more present than he’d like to let on, but he doesn’t let this cast a shadow on the life he and people he loves are leading right now. He’s the source of many moments that had me smiling and even laughing, and my love for him has only grown through reading this.
Also Elisabeth seems to carry Demonslayer around with her almost everywhere she goes, and I simply think that more characters should have emotional support swords like she does. Truly iconic of her.
If you enjoyed Sorcery of Thorns, you don’t want to miss this sweet and thoughtful follow up!
A wonderfully cozy follow-up to A Sorcery of Thorns!
Elisabeth and Nathaniel are back with a problem that's far greater than the end of the world - it's the fact the Thorn Manor is rebelling against them and refuses to let them leave. Each time they attempt it, the bricks themselves shutter in anger. Setting out to find answers in the mysterious halls only leads to more unanswered questions - and some very funny situations.
I adored this novella. It was so perfectly written to wrap up the ache I had from finishing the original novel. There's just something about wanting to know every little detail about the characters you love after you leave them. And while I did love the way Sorcery of Thorns ended, this feels like the cherry on top of an otherwise delicious piece of cake. It was sweet, it was wholesome, and it even brought a couple tears to my eyes.
Nothing can beat the magic and warmth that exudes from Margaret Rogerson's writing and this piece just feels like the quintessential cozy read. I can see myself picking this up again and again just to sink myself back into the story and the world. I can't wait to pick up a copy for my shelves!
Thank you to NetGalley, Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing, and Margaret K. McElderry Books for providing me with a copy for an honest review!
I adored Sorcery of Thorns, and this was one of my most anticipated reads of the year. I was not disappointed. It’s fun and entertaining, and there are some incredibly touching moments too. The story takes place a couple of months after the conclusion of Sorcery of Thorns and is set in Thorn Manor, as Elisabeth, Nathaniel, Silas, and their new employee Mercy are trapped within. Elizabeth and Nathaniel must figure out what happened to the wards and why the house is working against them.
This is a great fantasy for people who love books. Elizabeth had a special connection to grimoires, and her love of and affection toward them makes my book-loving heart happy. The supernatural elements are also fantastic, and I love how so many regularly inanimate objects have distinct personalities, especially the grimoires and the house. Oh my gosh, the attack topiaries, the murderous clothing, the cursed coat of arms – it’s all so magical, entertaining, and fun, and it can be a little dangerous.
This was one of the things she loved best about books. She might never know who had written the dedication, or how long ago, or to whom, but she could briefly clasp hands with them across eternity, a chance meeting of souls made possible by their shared love of a story.
I also like that we learn so much more about Thorn Manor and its past inhabitants. I was hoping more of Nathaniel’s past would be explored, as well as his ancestry, and we learned a ton about the Thorns, the house, and Silas’s connection to each. With some of these revelations, we also learn how Nathaniel struggles with his memories, which manifest in his nightmares. Poor Nathaniel! I feel so bad for him and all he’s gone through. He and Elisabeth (and Silas) deserve some happy, peaceful times! Of course, first they have to figure out why the house won’t let them leave, and they have a ball to prepare for, as Thorn Manor is hosting, much to Nathaniel’s displeasure and Elisabeth’s curiosity.
It was so fun being able to revisit Elisabeth, Nathaniel, and Silas. I adored these characters, and to see how they are doing after what happened in Sorcery of Thorns is fantastic. Nathaniel is healing, Silas is acting strangely, and Elisabeth is adjusting to her new normal. Their relationships are growing and changing, and they have formed this unique family unit and unbreakable bond. Oh, and Mercy has come to work for Nathaniel! She had a small but important role in Sorcery of Thorns, and I was curious about what happened to her. I love that she has a bigger role in this book, and her personality really shines.
The focus of the novel is the relationship between Elizabeth and Nathaniel, and even Thorn Manor wants to know more about their feelings for each other! Nathaniel’s humor and charm are everything, and his devotion to and love for Elizabeth is so sweet. Elisabeth describes falling in love so well, and I love all the ways they both profess their love for each other without actually saying the words. Plus, their banter is top-notch. And the final scenes are beautifully romantic and magical for Elisabeth and Nathaniel.
The relationship between Elizabeth and Silas is another highlight of the story, which isn’t a surprise because I ADORE Silas! He’s changed, yet so much of him has stayed the same, and his growing friendship with Elisabeth is fabulous. The scene where he teaches her to dance is a wonderfully touching moment and says so much about their feelings toward each other. We see a tender side to Silas, which I love!
I would definitely recommend this novella to readers of ya fantasy. It’s clever, unique, and super fun, and I love Rogerson’s immersive writing style. Special thanks to NetGalley, Turn the Page Tours and the publisher for gifting me a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.
