This was so cute! I really liked it! The title is quirky and fits perfectly for this book. I liked both main characters and was rooting for their live stories.
Sally loves romcoms. She believes everyone can have a classic met cute every lasting love. Harry doesn’t believe in love, but his parents were never good examples of what a partnership should be. When Harry breaks up with his girlfriend and she won’t move out of his house he has to find a temporary solution. Sally is looking to rent her sisters old room. This unlikely pair become roommates and quickly become friends. After a heavy debate on whether romcom scenes liked Dirty Dancing are special they end up recreating a scene and Sally posts it on TikTok. The video is blown up and gives Sally an idea to recreate more scenes. At first Harry wasn’t on board but a cute blonde made him change his mind. The time they spend together makes them realize they truly have chemistry. Is it enough to be together?
This book really took me by surprise, I wanted to read up my romance books I have on Netgalley this month as it is February and the month of love! This book was so much more, I loved the storyline it reminded me a bit of the flat share but was more spicy. I'm really getting into my spicy books at the moment and this one was a big 5 stars for me. Also loved the reference to Tiktok as i know some readers will love this!
This was such a good idea as a book. I loved the story line and the way it was executed (for the most part) but there were some things I wasn’t keen on.
The grumpyXsunshine was actually pretty good because both characters had a bit of both. I really liked Sally’s character mostly but some things really annoyed me. First of all, she is far too obsessed with “hearing the bells ring” to actually realise what an amazing person Harry is and it blinds her to the reality of her situation. Obviously it is overcome and they have a HEA but that still grated on me.
Harry was a good character and he actually seemed to have a brain and realise what he was feeling unlike Sally. He had good character development and overall genuinely added to the story. I thought that Isabelle (yes it feels weird 😭) was a good way to show the realistic way that some relationships can end. I thought the way she behaved was awful but something that people have probably experienced.
Overall I really liked it but some miscommunication and aspects of Sally’s character annoyed me so 3 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley, HarperCollins UK and One More Chapter, and author Kathryn Freeman for providing an arc in exchange for an honest review. Nobody Puts Romcoms In The Corner comes out February 27, 2023!
Pick up this delightful little book if you love rom coms! Harry and Sally are reluctant roommates. Sally runs a romance-themed cafe and is a rom com aficionado. Harry is a cynic and broken-hearted grump. Sally uploads a tik tok of her and Harry trying to recreate the Dirty Dancing dance move and it goes viral. The two then take up a tik tok campaign of recreating famous rom coms. Very cute plot!
Sweet and uplifting romance perfect for a lighthearted feel good read. The relationship was believable and the tropes not overly obvious. My reading was enhanced by them not tripped up.
Did this book prompt me to watch all the romcoms? Absolutely, it did. Was it also the CUTEST (that’s right, all caps) book to read in February? Of course! “Nobody Puts RomComs in the Corner” by Kathryn Freeman is about how Harry met Sally- wait, not that Harry and Sally! Sally happens to have a room open, and Harry is dealing with a messing break-up (his ex won’t leave his house), so he moves in. Sally has an idea to make money creating tiktoks of classic romcom scenes and ropes Harry in, but Harry might just be more of a romantic than he lets on.
This book is pretty much a what you see is what you get kind of situation. Harry and Sally complete a bunch of classic romcom scenes with slight twists and find themselves falling for each other in the process. It’s kind of like a nostalgic trip down romcom lane. I feel like even if you haven’t seen all the movies in this book, you’ve at least seen one and this book will make you want to watch it.
In the end, this book was a great February read. I gave it a solid 4 stars!
Thanks to NetGalley and One More Chapter for an ARC in exchange for my honest review!
Nobody Puts Rom-coms in the Corner
This has hand on heart got to be one of the best books I've ever read. Everything about the book is just me. I loved the main characters, the film references, the friendships, the love. If you love rom-coms and romance books you will love this.
Honestly I can't recommend this book enough!!
This is the fourth book I’ve read from this author and I think this is definitely my favourite so far!
Lovers of romcoms, both written and on the big screen will love this one. The multiple references to iconic scenes from Dirty Dancing, when Harry met Sally and Ghost to name a few, will have readers reminiscing and giggling in equal measure as the main characters’ attempts to recreate them often end hilariously.
There’s a really contemporary feel to this one with the videos being uploaded and going viral on TikTok and it feels fresh and quirky. The Love Bean cafe and its decor is also a highlight for me.
The two central characters, Sally and Harry (who else?) are like chalk and cheese and their ideas about love are poles apart. Both are extremely likeable characters despite their different personalities and they make the perfect foil for each other to learn about themselves as they battle with understanding their obvious attraction to each other.
Sally’s love of all things pink and lack of body confidence is in sharp contrast to Harry’s hard, blunt exterior but we come to learn that maybe they both have hidden depths they don’t normally allow the world to see.
I particularly liked Harry’s dry sense of humour and the ensuing banter and flirtation between him and Sally had my interest piqued from the start. The story is peppered with humour and I found myself giggling out loud frequently.
This is a wonderful, feel-good, easy read for anyone who loves a good romcom!
With thanks to the author, Rachel at Random Resources and One More Chapter for the opportunity to participate in the tour.
3.5 stars. A romcom about romcoms!
Sally is a classic romantic, but her roommate Harry is a classic cynic. While pretty drunk one evening, they end up badly recreating "the lift" from Dirty Dancing and the video goes viral. Realizing there might be money in working through the romcom lexicon with some more #EpicRomcomReenactmentFailure. As they keep recreating major romcom moments though, their faking starts to feel a lot less fake.
First off, as a major romcom movie lover, reading about another romcom lover recreating iconic moments was exactly what I was looking for. Sally and Harry are so funny as they try (and fail) to implement those moments for the camera. I also really enjoyed the setting of Brighton and getting a taste of the city through the book. Many of the friend group are really fun (Kitty is a bit of an enigma, but I think we could love her) and I want to see their stories as well.
In terms of things I didn't enjoy so much, this is a bit difficult. For some reason I just couldn't really get fully invested in the book. When I was reading the story, I liked it, but I found myself setting the book down much more than I would like. I wish that I could have been more engaged. Sally and Harry were cute, but I don't feel that they had super amazing chemistry, particularly romantic chemistry, which I think impact how much I was invested in their success. The conflict was also entirely expected and extremely frustrating.
Overall, if you enjoy movie romcoms, definitely give this book a go. It's a fun summer, palette-cleanser read. I think it would be the perfect vacation read as well.
Nobody Puts RomComs in the Corner follows Sally, a romantic, and Harry, a cynic, who attempt to recreate the lift from Dirty Dancing. The two come together when Sally needs a lodger and Harry needs a place to stay. Their initial lift video goes viral, which leads to the two of them recreating other iconic romance scenes from movies. I loved going through all the different scenes, like the ones from Ghost and When Harry Met Sally. Sally and Harry bring a fun vibe to the story with their grumpy/sunshine dynamic and witty banter.
In addition to the lighter romcom recreation side of the story, there are some heavier topics weaved into the story, too. Sally has a complex relationship with her sister Amy, which is dealt with throughout the story. The two had to rely on each other a lot after the death of their parents. I am not sure if this story will become part of a series, but I could see a novel featuring Amy as a main character in the future. Both Harry and Sally use their parents’ marriages to shape their views on love. Sally believes that her parents’ love story was the goal while Harry’s are not the best example.
On its surface, the story seems to be very straightforward with a romcom loving girl and a more cynical guy. It took me a little while to get into the story as it gained complexity, but it was greatly enjoyable once I was there. I would have appreciated a little more build-up of the backstory for each character as there was more telling than showing. Sally was easier, at first, to get to know compared to Harry, but it was easy enough to connect with them. Overall, this story was fun and a great read by the author. Since it is my third read by the author, I look forward to reading the fourth!
**I give a special thank you to Netgalley and the publisher, One More Chapter, for the opportunity to read this novel. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.**
The romcom focus of this romcom was a really fun premise. The characters were sweet and likeable with great chemistry. This is a perfect book to recommend to those who don't mind a little spice in their stories, but don't want it to be the main focus.
Thank you to HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter and NetGalley for the ARC of this novel. The concept of acting out well-known scenes from romantic comedies is a golden concept and it was executed quite well in this novel. In typical romance novel format, one of the main characters does not believe in love but you know what you are getting into with these books. This is something that is also explored in the novel so I did enjoy that the character (and author) are self aware enough to comment on it and use it as a plot point. These are not real life but it felt like maybe it could be which is more than I can say for most books in this genre. This was a quick read for me and I liked it more than I thought I would. 4 stars.
What a cute read! Perfect for the month of Valentine's Day!
When Harry and Sally (wink, wink) become roomates they don't expect to become famous TikTok stars. But when they agree to act out famous scenes from romantic comedies-beginning of course with the Baby and Johnny lift from Dirty Dancing-, they become viral sensations. There are so many nods to romcoms. This was my favorite part of the book!
This was a light read but also dealt with some more serious issues of family dynamics, loss, sibling relationships, unrealistic expectations in relationships, etc. Making it an even more enjoyable read in my opinion.
The secondary characters were awesome as well. And I have to mention the adorable cover! This is the perfect book for romcom fans. Great idea for a plot and well-executed! Truly enjoyable read.
Thank you for the ARC!! The writing, in 3rd pov, was nice, although I didn't appreciate very much how the author made it obvious/described constantly how attracted the main characters were to each other. The idea was creative, even if I found it a bit awkward here and there (maybe that was the charm).
Kathryn Freeman’s style was funny and wrote just the book I did not know I needed. This book was a melding experience of beloved romcom movies and a book with just the right about of formula without being too trite. Good character development and lovable side characters.
I found this was a 1 out of 5 spice…. Closed door, but the window is cracked (that sounds like a voyeur metaphor). I give this book 5/5 because it made me laugh, escape and love all the characters.
Thanks for the eARC read through NetGalley.
When Harry, a guy who doesn't believe in love, finds out that his girlfriend has been cheating on him with her boss, he is in search of a temporary place to stay whilst the ex refuses to move out. Enter Sally, a rom-com lover, who has a spare room and needs the extra money.
I liked them recreating the iconic rom-com scenes. I've always been a fan of rom-com movies so it was very fun to read them putting their own spin on scenes any rom-com lover knows. From the Dirty Dancing lift to Pretty Woman and Never Been Kissed, there are so many iconic movie references. Although I usually despise references in books, it didn't bother me as much because they're there for a reason. The only references I truly hated in this were the movie After (no please) and Tiktok. For some reason saying that it's on TikTok gave me the ick.
The plot was predictable, which most rom-coms are. I understand we're trying to emulate every rom-com to exist but ugh. Their romance was ok. Their tension was great and the smut was fun, but I didn't believe they actually loved each other.
As for the characters, Sally was kind of annoying at times. The fact she couldn't tell that what Harry did was a form of love pissed me off. Especially since a lot of rom-com movies have this, so she should've known. Harry was my favourite, even though he wasn't a new book boyfriend or something. The side characters were fine except for Kitty, who was the worst.
Overall, enjoyable but not as great as Italian Job.

2.5 stars
This took me way longer than I thought it would. I loved the idea and a lot of parts throughout the book are really good. There’s just a lot of drag in between those good parts.
In between all the RomCom reenactments, Harry and Sally just have the same conversations over and over again.
Third act breakup was over a stupid reason that didn’t hold any ground.
This book just didn’t feel like it had a lot of driving purpose.
I really wanted to love it but it needed to be strung together better.
Great tension and ok spice. 18+
Special thanks to Netgalley and the authors and workers at HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter who deserve a fair contract for this digital ARC
I think I want to marry this book. I love ROMCOMS, from Dirty Dancing to Never been Kissed and everything inbetween and so this book made my soul sing.
From the main characters Harry and Sally to their rendition of the iconic lift going viral, every bit of this book made my heart fly.
There is a decent amount of spice too. I loved it
I feel mean giving this a 2.5 ⭐️ review. Honestly, I thought I was going to love this book. It has great reviews, it’s about romcoms- it seemed like a shoe in. But it felt slow and a bit repetitive with the romcom make believe. I was annoyed that Harry couldn’t just get over his ridiculous lack of communication and I don’t feel like it dug deep enough into the emotional side of how much his parents really screwed him up. One thing that really annoyed me is Sally was so patient the.whole.book. Even when the story hits its climax (at like 86% 😫) she’s still just weepy and not totally angry. She forgives him for everything and never really sticks up for herself and it just felt not real. The ending felt really cheesy too. It was a struggle for me. I think I wanted more from the characters. More depth. Clearly I’m missing something because soooo many people loved it. Thanks @NetGalley for the opportunity to read this!
NOBODY PUTS ROM COMS IN THE CORNER is my favorite book for 2023 so far. It’s funny, sweet and seriously clever. There’s passion, romance, the green eyed monster and the perfect guy in Harry who believes he can’t ever love anyone then meets Sally who just by being herself, shows him what he is missing in life..
The whole premise for the story is brilliant to those of us that know and love our rom coms. Sally, with her friends Kitty and Vince watch their favorite movies over and over, rebelling in the iconic scenes. Harry becomes Sally’s lodger and finds all this quite foreign. He’s a no nonsense guy, and romance is nonsense to him. When you meet his parents, you’ll see why.
Sally is all sunshine, helpful to a fault, and looking for “The One” that will live her as much as she loves him. She learns some valuable lessons about love.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley.com and this is my voluntary review. Loved it!
