As a person who avidly watched romcoms with her mother as a child, this book had its clutches on me from the getgo. I can't wait to talk about it with my mom!
This book was so cheesy I didn’t expect to be crying at the end!
I loved Harry and Sally so much
All the of the romcom sketches were perfect and honestly just what I needed. If you like Bridget Jones, Pretty Woman, How to Lose A Guy you need to put this in your TBR pile immediately!!
Might have to read a horror to break my heart from all this happiness 😅
Special thank you to NetGalley for supplying the ARC eBook
Nobody Puts Romcoms in the Corner was a super cute, easy to read book. The title was the thing that turned me on to the book, but it's a bit of a mouthful, too, isn't it? If you are looking for a light-hearted, charming, and funny read, this is your book!! Coming February 2023!
Once again, I find myself wishing Goodreads would allow half stars, this was a 4.5 for me, thoroughly enjoyed reading it, I have talked about it since I have finished it with other book friends, but for me personally I like a tiny bit more spice.... So honestly, that's on me, not this lovely author!
This book had all the love, but it was not super spicy, with mostly closed-door scenes nothing to fret about if your mom picked this book up. The themes in this book are true love, parental loss, divorce, and long-term friendships. There were several points in this book that I had a big smile plastered to my face, or I had laughed out loud and needed to yield stares from people in the same room as me. The author did a lovely job of picking out those moments in all of our favorite romcoms and sticking them to our hearts with little pushpins.
This story follows Sally, a lover of all things rom-com and a diehard romantic. Sally is the owner of a cafe and big sister to Amy. Sally's friends Vince and Kitty play major roles throughout this book as well. Although I wanted to slap Kitty for the vast majority of the book, I digress....
Meet Harry, a builder by trade, cynical grump who has just broken up with his ex and carries big baggage from him childhood and from his past relationships. Harry is Sally's lodger. Due to Harry's ex-girlfriend not moving out of his house, come on, Harry, where's your backbone? :D
Harry and Sally could not be the opposite, but the one thing in common is that they both need to make a bit of extra money. They begin reenacting popular scenes from major romantic comedies throughout time. Harry's character plays the perfect grump for this grumpy VS. sunshine trope. The grump is paired perfectly with a healthy dose of sarcasm and good old britt style slap-stick humor. I think without those qualities, his character would have been lacking, and it would have been hard to create a bond between the MCs. Harry's pals Jack and Mike play frequent and important supportive roles.
Sally is the perfect counter to Harry's grump, a cheerful, bright, bubbly, lover of pink. She is a diehard, hopeful romantic, almost to the point of naiveté, she flirts with that line, but her character was so loveable that she never crossed that line, for me personally.
You learn a bit of Sally and Harry's backstories in the later part of the book, I know placement wise it made sense to add that bit in later in the book, but as a reader, I feel like it could have been more useful to draw in both MC back stories earlier in the book to really create that connection between reader and story line.
Overall, all of the characters were loveable, and the story had a light plot that was full of all the things I was looking for when I picked up this title. There is a 3rd act breakup that lasted longer than I was hoping for for this lighthearted book, but I was happy Kitty redeemed herself in the end!
As an American reading this book some of the slang terms were a miss for me and distracted me but I am sure that's the same for anyone reading a book written by an author not from their area... I feel like I would have loved this in audio book form, though!
I do have to say thank you to @Netgalley and @HarperCollins for giving me a copy of this book. My reviews on this matter are of my own volition and are not subjected to approval by either party.
Harry and Sally become roommates when Harry’s ex cheats on him and doesn’t want to move out of his house, so he is left with renting a room at Sally’s. They are both strapped for cash, and on a drunken bet they decide to recreate the iconic dirty dancing lift and while they fail at it, Sally posts it and it goes viral. Sally sees this as a way to monetize from recreating romcom moments. Sally loves romcoms and really believes in love while Harry is a romance cynic.
I found Harry and Sally to be lovable characters, found myself relating to Harry a bit when it comes to believing in love and that attracted me more to him since the characters overall feel a bit on the realistic side. They’re growth is seen quite throughout, even in the slightest ways that you could miss it. This was an enjoyable read, it was funny, a bit cheesy and of course romantic.
This book is perfect for readers like myself and Sally that are romcom lovers, but also like Harry, a love cynic or cynical about love.
I love the idea of this book. Two singles forced to live together that have virtually nothing in common. One is a hopeless romantic waiting to hear the bells of true love as she falls wildly in love and lives happily ever after. The other is a cynical man who believes love in itself doesn't even exist. Cue the cute rom-com tick tocs they are about to make.
Everything screams adorable, rom-com, Harry met Sally ( that's their actual names) and it is a pretty good book. There were definitely parts where I was shaking my fist and yelling at the Kindle, just realized you were all in love already! It was frustrating to see them vocalize their feelings for each other but still like yeah I know we're just friends with benefits, totally not going to fall in love with each other, haha. 🤦🏼♀️
Thank you netgalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Sally co-owns a coffee shop with her friend, loves romcoms and is in serious amount of debt. Harry builds houses for a living, owns one himself (obvously 🙄), but can't live there, because his cheating ex lives there rent free and has no plans of moving out. So Harry rents a room in Sally's apartment.
He's never been in love, so romcom moments seem silly to him, for example - Dirty dancing "lift". So both of them film a video to prove that it is (or isn't) romantic. They put a video online and immediately it gets popular. So they figure thay would make more of the famous moments with their own twist on it and gain some money from posting videos on TikTok.
If you love romcoms, then this book is for you. You can even try to guess which movie are they gonna do next. As you might expect it's full of clichés, but still with few surprises. And as I already mentioned to the author @kathryn.freeman_author I had a bit of crying sesh while reading this book. 😄 This is a fast read - read it in a day, so that says a lot.
Tiny bonus stars for mentioning @harrystyles a.k.a. Hazza and one of my favourite movies - Love, Rosie.🥰
Solid 3.5
I really enjoyed the premise of the book. Who doesn’t love acting out scenes from iconic rom coms. Also the characters names are Harry and Sally 🤭
But my big issue was with Sally herself. She felt incredibly annoying and selfish at times and it was hard to keep reading. But it ended fine and I think Harry is an incredibly written character!!
One thing I really enjoyed was the relationships outside of the main love story. Both Sally and Harry’s family and friends (except kitty i really didn’t like her) were so charming !!
thanks again to harpercollins and NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review
This was such a fun take on romantic comedy. I love how Harry & Sally start doing the TikTok videos of famous romcom moments even though Harry is more of a curmudgeon than romantic enthusiast like Sally. Romcom reenactment fails with this kind of couple would be fun to watch. The story has a lot of ups & downs which keeps the reader in=vested in the characters' stories. Highly recommend reading this one!
Thanks to the publisher & NetGalley for advanced copy in exchange for my honest review
This one was so adorable! Any romcom lover will love this. It’s full of references and scenes of every romcom movie I’ve ever seen, not to mention the main characters are named Harry and Sally. Like come on! This is so cute.
Throughout this book Harry and Sally recreate iconic romantic scenes from popular romcom movies for their TikTok channel. What starts as a way to earn some extra money, quickly turns into something more. Except Harry doesn’t believe in love and Sally is falling harder than ever.
This one is for all the rom com lovers in the world! Sally is a lover of all things romcom and Harry is completely against the idea of love. Sally ends renting a room to Harry and the opposites attract love story begins. Overall, a cute and fun read! Thank you NetGalley for the chance to review this book.
3.5 stars!
she was cute! not the best piece of literature you’ve ever read but i did enjoy all the nods to other rom coms (not like that’s in the title or anything). a lot of cute, a little cheesy, but what’s not to expect?
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
A feel good romance, highlighting special romantic moments from films with a comic twist. Good fun. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me review this book.
I'm not sure how I feel about this one. It's not a bad book but at the same time it didn't quite work for me. The premise is great, the writing is good, there's nothing really wrong with the characters but somehow it doesn't really deliver. I think what I miss is the fun and joy of romcoms. The focus was definitely more on rom than com. After Harry meets Sally (yes, really) they act out some classic romcom scenes but it feels forced. Also, the films referenced are mostly from the 90s and at no point it's acknowledged that these are old films, especially for characters in their late 20s.
In general there isn't much conflict after Harry meets Sally, but of course, there's a 3rd act breakup. It's triggered by the actions of an evil ex, which is something that always annoys me.
At the end there's sort of a grand gesture, but I feel it could've been so much grander to finally introduce some romcom fun to the story.
So yes, this book definitely has it's flaws, but it's still a decent read.
From the publisher:
Sally is a classic romantic and Harry is a classic cynic, but when a drunken bet leads the new flatmates to (badly) recreate ‘the lift’ from Dirty Dancing, and the video goes viral (#EpicRomcomReenactmentFailure), they both realise there’s potential financial benefit in blundering their way through the romcom lexicon for their suddenly vast social media following.
Now, as Harry and Sally bring major romcom moments to new life – including recreating that classic diner scene – their faking it turns to making…out and suddenly they’re living a real life romcom of their own! But like all the greatest love stories, the road to happily ever after is paved with unexpected challenges for this hero and heroine.

My Review:
Another romcom book from the UK…and I really liked it. Sally is a hopeless, unapologetic romantic and Harry is a love-fighting cynic. Their easy banter was engaging and being able to be inside both of their minds was a nice touch. It gives the reader a glimpse into their rationalizations, their compromises, their hopes and their fears. Harry and Sally both have family obstacles to overcome and their support of each other is also realistic, sweet and hopeful.
Sally’s friend Kitty is pretty nasty and dour in her overprotection of Sally, and I found her annoying. She redeemed herself by the end and Sally’s friend Vince is a good guy. Harry’s friends are pretty stereotypical guys—always baiting him, making somewhat crude comments (are grown men really like that when they know a friend is in love with a woman???). Harry’s ex and his mother are also mildly infuriating. LOL.
I enjoyed it, and the recreations (with a twist) of the movie romcom scenes they did for social media were fun to envision. But seriously, what guy would really do all that? I guess one who falls in love? ;-) Good book for those who enjoy the genre.
Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK for an advance digital copy in exchange for my review.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 stars
Nobody Puts Romcoms In the Corner follows Harry and Sally. This is a grump/sunshine romance. Sally loves romcoms and can't wait for her own romantic HEA. Harry is in need of a room and Sally has one up for rent. A little after getting to know one another, Harry agrees to help Sally film funny romcoms remake videos so she can get sponsors and earn extra cash on the side. Through all of these romantic gestures, these two characters end up falling for one another. This one was a bit cheesy to me.
This was such an adorably hopeful story of the forced living situation troupe and of grumpy meets sunshine in human form. This was written well enough that it wasn’t too much. I think the main character is one of the most lovable I have read in awhile and appreciate the growth. Thank you to NetGalley for letting me read this book in exchange of an honest review. I recommend when you want something fresh and light and lovely.
I am a sucker for a good romance novel and this one was no exception. Full of laughs, love, love, and tears, I am predicting it will easily be one of my favourite reads of 2023.
I had not read any of Kathryn Freeman's books previously, but now I am a fan!
The character development was superb and I felt as though I knew each characters thoughts and feelings. A perfect, opposites attract novel!
I've never been much of a third person fan, but I loved the style in which Freeman explored it. It kept me engaged and wanting to know more.
I highly recommend for any romance lover!
I found this a little slow to get going but once the reenactments of iconic romcom moments began I started to love this couple and will them to get together. Can a true romantic who wants the full love and marriage package with bells on and a cynic who has never known love ever meet in the middle? Can love win the day? Of course it can, and thousands of tik tok followers are watching their video moments and hoping it can too.. A likeable heroine, a hunky hero, an ungrateful sister, warring parents, and some good friends all bring something extra to the story. A good solid readable romance!
Oh this book was so good. All the fabulous rim comms were quoted and acted out as Sally and lodger Harry got to know each other, The Dirty Dancing lift and the Harry met Sally orgasm start the videoing off. Harry is bruised by his upbringing with cold parents and we follow both him and Sally as she tries to work out if he makes the bells of love ring for her, and he has decide if love even exists. I shed a few tears for the couple, but also laughed at their antics - a lighthearted read.
This was a very enjoyable read. A romance-loving lady ends up renting a room in her very pink apartment to a hunky, romance-skeptic builder. And their names just happen to be Harry and Sally. After a few drinks one night, Sally explains the real meaning of the finale in “Dirty Dancing” to Harry and he counters with the observation that any strong guy could do “the lift” and that it’s the sexual attraction rather than true romance that is the motivation there. That leads to them trying the lift in their living room which Sally films and posts online. The next thing they know, she’s getting tens of thousands of clicks and she decides that they can reenact classic scenes from rom-coms and perhaps get sponsors to pay them given that both need some money.
Their reenactments are cute, but what I really enjoyed was getting to know these characters better. Harry is a hunky softie who has never experienced real love from his parents or from his former girlfriend who refuses to leave his house. That’s why he needs to rent a room in Sally’s apartment. And Sally isn’t just a fluffy lover of romance. She’s a girl who was orphaned at 16, but went on to give up her dreams of university to start a business so she can raise her younger sister.
We know that Harry and Sally are going to fall in love and some of the plot twists are quite predictable. Does anyone doubt that, once we know that there is a sexy video on someone’s phone that it is going to one day be uploaded online? But that aside, it was still a fun read that kept me enjoying it to the end.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book that I received from Netgalley; however, the opinions are my own and I did not receive any compensation for my review.
