A great book for those who want to try a vegan lifestyle but indulge in "fast food" from time to time. It has great dupes for most fast food outlets.
This book was okay. Fairly complex. If you are looking for some fun, gimmicky, project vegan food, or miss some particular fast food indulgence, this book is for you.
This is a fabulous book for anyone short on time, wanting to make a delicious meal. Its a no fuss book that uses readily available ingredients.
Such an incredible book. The recipes and pictures were perfect. I plan to buy this food and cook some of the recipe shared. Thank you for allowing me to read an advanced copy! I would highly recommend this book to others.
Super easy to follow but as always just adjust the spices to your individual tastes. Not too many fried items but that did not really bother me. Loved the pictures and the writing style too!
Very enjoyable cooking book, I adapted a recipe for a vegan "steak" and it was the best burger I've made!!
Lots of recipes, advice and also different options. Explained very clearly and wittily.
I want to thank NetGalley and Harvard Common Press for a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
I live Thee Burger Dude's YouTube channel, his breakfast burrito recipe has gotten me closer to the meal prep lifestyle than anything else in my life.
This book was a touch disappointing. Maybe I should have guessed based on the title and topic of the book that it would include a lot of fried items. But the majority of the recipes are the same with the smallest deviation in the seasoning of the dry batter. The recipes that stood out to me the most are ones that weren't fired and weren't reliant on mock meals. But that's a reflection of personal preference than the book.
The book had clear recipes and book photos for each one. For sure I will be trying the Cheddar Bay Biscuits this weekend. Overall a good book, but I will be sticking to just watching his channel.
Brilliant recipes to enjoy some fast food at home, with less of the guilt. Often the vegan recipes are super green and healthy, and while this is not food for every day, it’s good for a change and will content even the meat eaters in the house!
Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publishers for letting me read this book in exchange for my review.
Vegan Fast Food: Copycat Burgers, Tacos, Fried Chicken, Pizza, Milkshakes, and More! by Brian Watson is a great alternative cookbook. The recipes are easy to read, and the ingredients are widely available. The pictures make the recipes come to life. All types of eaters will enjoy this cookbook.
***** I received an ARC from NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for my honest review. *****
I got this book for my teen who would like to eat more vegan food 'if only there was an alternative to xyz...' and rejects my preferred veggie based food!
Unfortunately as I feared, a lot of the ingredients for the savoury dishes were impossible to get hold of for me, in a small town outside of the US. But I appreciated the various options and found the bean burger very tasty - I shall just tweak it a bit more with local ingredients!
On the other hand the couple of sweet dishes I've tried (dinwhich had much more accessible ingredients) have been successful and really tasty so I'm confident that the savoury dishes would be good too with the full ingredients.
So I would reject this for those who like my son, would like vegan versions of the food he craves, providing you are in the US or in a large city!

I absolutley love the idea behind this cookbook: To veganize famous fast food menu items.
Personally I'm not vegan, and I quite frankly can't imagine myself becoming one full time (I respect those who can do it with my whole heart though). Despite this I've always wanted to have more meat free days, where I try vegan dishes. The problem (for me) was that none of the vegan dishes that I saw online appealed to me (until now.)
Another great thing about the cookbook is the pictures. They were real noice 👌🏼.
While the idea and the recipes were great, there's still some things I would like to add or talk about:
1) The author of the book Brian Watson has a Youtube channel (and a website) where he has videos of him cooking these dishes. It would be amazing if he had aded a QR-code to each recipe. That way you'll be able to compare the cooking process and see how the final outcome should look like.
2) As a want-to-be-halftime-vegan some of these vegetables, spices and ingredients were unknown to me. While the author has tried to make a couple pages explaining some of these meat substitutes, I would've liked an index (or something like that with pictures of the vegetables and the spices).
Other than that, it was a great cookbook.

Fantastic cook book, I wanted to dive in and try everything, straight forward and clearly written, beautiful photos, really appealing as you read, I’m a meat eater trying to eat more plant based and I’ll tell you these are just as good as the original meat versions , cynical about veganism try the recipes in this book, you won’t be afterwards

Ok the variety of recipes alone. You know EXACTLY which fast food items to try. I died over the In-n-Out Animal Style burger. The recipes were so simple and turned out well. I only wish there was a nutrition label for each recipe so you could see how the vegan and original versions compare.
Brian Watson wrote a fantastic cookbook full of copycat fast-food recipes. His book is beautifully laid out and designed, and all of the recipes look delicious. I especially loved that he gave a very detailed description of the basics in the beginning (basic burger patty recipes, basic chicken recipes with options for air frying and deep frying) and then followed those up with many and varied recipes using those basics.
I attempted three of the recipes myself, the Panera white cheddar mac and cheese, the homemade tvp/seitan burger, and the In-N-Out double double animal style burger (which I made with the homemade patty).

Overall, these recipes were easy to follow and delicious, but did call for specialty ingredients. For example, the mac and cheese called for lactic acid, and the burger patty required potato starch and mushroom powder. I had to substitute all of these, so I ended up using vinegar, cornstarch, and mushroom-infused oil respectively (this last one was a definite stretch).
While the recipes still turned out wonderfully, I would have liked to see more detail on substitution options. For instance, Watson lists vinegar as a potential substitute for lactic acid in the beginning of the cookbook, but he never gives a substitution ratio, so I had to do quite a bit of guessing, since it was far from 1:1.
This book gets a solid 4.5/5 stars for me. I’d recommend this to anyone who’s not afraid of deep frying and specialty ingredients!

As a non-American, I know most of these fast food chains in name only. That didn't make me less excited (or even more so?) because this cookbook gives me an idea of what the famous dishes known from mainly the internet (;)) taste like! And they taste like... insanely great beige comfort food that is ideal after a night out. And I absolutely loved it. What I loved most, is that these instructions are easy to follow and the recipes aren't overly complicated. Amazing job!
Excellent ideas!
My husband and I are fairly recent vegan converts (August 2020), and much like Brian said in his introduction, we would have laughed at thinking this would ever be our new life, but it got to a point that we could no longer ignore the animals.
Many of the ideas are some that we have had as well, we do faux macs with a store-bought sauce, but will definitely be trying his homemade version, how I never thought to steam melt my vegan cheeze is beyond me (but I absolutely tried it the other day and it was a game changer), and that BK original Chick’n sandwich remake is definitely on my radar!
There are plant-based vegans, vegans for health, vegans for the environment, vegans for the animals, and vegans just because they are. Whatever category you are in if you ever get one of those cravings for or a desire to try something that is more about a palate pleasure as opposed to health, Brian’s Vegan Fast Food has something for you!
I will absolutely be purchasing this one!
Vegan Fast Food by Brian Watson
Copycat Burgers, Tacos, Fried Chicken, Pizza, Milkshakes, and More!
Feasting on the photos was a delight and made me drool…would love to have picked up a burger ready to eat right from one of those pages but instead hope to make one at home in the future, if I can find the ingredients here in Lebanon.
What I liked:
* The gorgeous photos with every recipe
* Concise recipes that are easy to follow
* The ingredients are probably easy to find in the West and sources and products are recommended
* Reading about variations on how to grill the burgers
* That there was one bean burger I can probably find the ingredients for locally
* That there were alternatives offered for basic “not-meat” ingredient
* Safety tips
* Kitchen tools, tips, and suggestions
* How closely the vegan recipes resembled the real fast foods
* Recipes I’d like to try: rice paper bacon, vegan Ranch Dressing Recipe and other condiments, actually… a lot of them!
* Kind of wondered about the nutritional information on the recipes but perhaps it is better NOT to know ;)
* The variety of recipes provided
What I didn’t like:
* That many of the recipes are ones I probably cannot make locally as many ingredients are not available in Lebanon and if they are, they are prohibitively expensive due to the current local economy.
Did I like this book? Yes
Would I give it as a gift to someone? Yes

Vegan Fast Food was an awesome compilation of the foods I miss when eating vegan!
I loved the imagery, recipes, and vibe of this book. I found it easy and exciting to read through. I’ve already started recommending it to friends!

This book was around 3 stars for me.
This book is full of copycat recipes of fast food chains and various fast foods redone as vegan recipes. I was surprised to see things like fries in this book since some of them are already vegan. The book has a variety of recipes that focuses on recreating burgers, milkshakes, etc. While these are vegan recipes a lot of them rely on ingredients like vegan cheese or vegan meats which don't always appeal to me. There is a nice black bean burger recipe included as well.
Overall this is a helpful book if you're looking for ways to assemble vegan options for finger foods and like meat alternatives.
This may not be the healthiest cookery book on my bookshelf but my vegan husband thought that the had died and gone to food heaven. A great book for the weekends or occasional treat , and better than a takeaway.
