This was a beautiful book on both levels!
Information was ideally suited for its audience of young people with plenty of interesting facts to keep their interest.
However it was also a beautiful book to 'look at'' The graphics & illustrations were stunning made batter by reading the book on the NetGalley Shelf app - much better reading experience of graphic heavy titles.
The book is even 'prettier' in real life.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for giving me this eARC to read.
The art in this is great and while I feel like the book is more aimed towards younger audiences, I did find it extremely interesting and interactive as it would ask questions and then answer them.
I didn't realize this was a children's book when I requested it from Netgalley, so that was disappointing. I've read a number of other (adult level) books in this vein and thoroughly enjoyed them. This one was mostly artwork and not a lot of actual information.
An interesting assortment of locations featured in this collection (though one might quibble with the use of the word "kingdoms"). Not a super thrilling read but one worth perusing on occasion.
Ever since I was little, I've had a fascination with lost cities and world mysteries. This book beautifully connected the two with gorgeous illustrations and a lot of historical information.
So first I have to start with my compliments for both the illustrator and the book designer. The pages are absolutely beautiful spreads of these legendary and historical lost cities. The maps at the beginning of each geographic section are excellent introductions.
The combination of mystical lands such as El Dorado and Atlantis, but also actual historical places like Carthage was absolutely fascinating. There was even historical context provided for the lost cities that may have existed at one point, but not as the legends portrayed them.
In addition, the sheer breadth of the different cultures covered in this book was phenomenal! From West Africa to Brazil to France, and beyond. I was blown away by all the representation.
I plan on immediately buying a copy of this to share with my nephew!
Thank you to Quarto Publishing Group and to NetGalley for the opportunity to review this ARC!
A surprisingly comprehensive guide through places of myth and lore, including many cities and countries besides the classic Atlantis and Troy that I had never even heard of. And I love the crowded pages! It might be due to my zoomed-in file of the book though, but at closer look the illustrations look a little thrown together - and while they aren't the most creative design-wise, they certainly get the message across for the kids.
This book was fantastic! The illustrations were beautiful and accompanied the information on real life, lost places. It was fascinating, and it also gave me fresh story ideas for my books! This is a book anyone can enjoy, from kids to adults! It’s also a great opportunity to learn things that could be lost if it wasn’t for this book.
Thank you to Netgalley, the author and publisher, for a chance to read and review this book.
I'd have LOVED a book like this when I was growing up. It's beautiful, it's exciting, and bursting with wonder!
This book is brilliant! I love history and I’m always intrigued by historical mysteries or lost artefacts etc so I couldn’t resist reading all about lost kingdoms!
Not only are the illustrations for this book beautiful, but they’re bright and colourful and really draw the eye too! I also loved how as well as having the kingdoms illustrated, there was a double spread illustrating where all these particular kingdoms should be on the section of the world map that’s being covered in that part! For example, the map of Europe had locations for all of the kingdoms mentioned in the section so you could picture it!
Did I also mention that the illustrations take up the whole page? It’s seriously stunning!
There’s also a wealth of information and it’s all in small bite size chunks that’s perfect for kids! I loved the little comments here and there as well as the more solid chunks of text!
Honestly I love this book and I need to pick up a physical copy, I had such a good time reading it and found out so many interesting like tidbits!
Thank you Netgalley and Publishers for an advanced copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
I probably shouldn't have read this straight through. I think this should be treated like a reference book, You can periodically read different sections at a time but maybe not all in one go as I did.
Some of these "kingdoms" I've known the names of, but it was nice to read about their origins too. I think it's fascinating how history and fables are intertwined at times with no concrete way to push through the veil between fact or fiction.
It's a great starter reference book to then take that knowledge and go research further on these lost kingdoms and/or their tales.
Such a cool look at kingdoms and places of long ago! Sure to spark more questions from curious minds, this book does a great job of introducing and explaining the disappearance and theories behind some well-known and not-so-well-known long lost worlds.
Absolutely stunning book, the illustrations are gorgeous and the stories are brilliant. Fantastic introduction to lost kingdoms of years gone by, these will make for some wonderful bedtime stories!
Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publishers for letting me read this book in exchange for my review.
This was both fun and informative, looking at the long held belief in mythical lands, their locations and how people perceived them over time. There was a really good mix of places and stories I was familiar with, alongside many that were new to me. The illustrations were lovely and complemented the text very well., and I loved the details about how these places had been included in maps over time. Very readable, I don't doubt this will issue well in our libraries,
I received this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This was a really cool guide with lots of places. Engaging for kids and adults!
What an amazing book! Broken into the continents, each section of stories begins with a map to help you orientate yourself. The stories include both well known and less familiar tales. With gorgeous pictures and text broken down into small, manageable sections, this will be the perfect read for those with a fondness for travel and adventure. We'll definitely be buying a copy for our school library for children to enjoy again and again.
Breathtaking collection of maps of ancient lands, long lost kingdoms and mythological places. Little bits of information blending myth and history, facts and fiction. A book to pour over, perfect book for my elementary library.
A beautifully illustrated book full of tales of lost kingdoms, cities and islanda. Some are based on historical and archaeological findings such as Babylon and Carthage, but some are mythical, folk tales or explanations of how the world was created such as Atlantis, Ile Ife etc.
I am interested in historical stories anyway and it is lovely how Emily explains clues that have been found as to their existence as well as exploring myths that could be explained in other ways. This is split into sections such as Europe, North america, Asia,Africa and each section has a map at the start so you can either read the book from start to finish or select what interests you.
A very cool book that showcases where lost civilizations would be if they still existed today. I really enjoyed the art style and the blurbs about each location!
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an arc for an honest review!
I really would have liked to read this book but the children got to it first. They were so entranced by it that they took my kindle and passed it between themselves for more than a few days. Excellent ,brilliant and extra good apparently it is. Eventually got the kindle back but they continue to look at this book everytime they visit (which is pretty much all the time).
What a beautiful book!
I absolutely loved learning about all these places and stories, some of which I have never heard before, and mythology is always interesting. This book is packed with gorgeous illustrations, fascinating facts and tons of myths to keep the reader interested.
Despite this being a book aimed at children, I really found myself enjoying it - it can be fun to read for all ages.
A fun, well-illustrated and informative book. What more could you want?
Thank you to NetGalley for the arc.
