I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the ebook. Very informative! This books teaches you how to use your skillets and how to care for them. The recipes look really good! I can't wait to try them. Highly recommend.
This was a winner!! I love my cast-iron and I also love one-pot/bowl/pan meals, so the concept of this one immediately intrigued me. The book is divided into sections--veggie/eggs, seafood, chicken, beef, and pork--and while not all of the recipes have photos, the vast majority do. A good variety in terms of flavor profiles, with recipes for smaller groups or a crowd, and many kid-friendly pleasers. Some unique twists on classics--such as a chicken pot pie topped with baguette slices instead of mashed potatoes--as well as some recipes/flavor pairings I'd never considered! I bookmarked a ton of recipes, and am *very* excited to get cooking!
My husband comes from the South and loves cast iron. Me? I grew up in the North and we didn’t really cook with it, so knowing that it needs special care I was always leery of using it. No longer! This book not only gives great detail on the care of Cast Iron, it comes with fabulous recipes that are made in the skillet itself. I’ve used our cast iron skillet for corn bread and my husband uses it to brown steaks we’ve cooked in the sous vide, but he always cares for them. Now it’s my turn!
The recipes are easy to follow and don’t use hard to find ingredients, making this a huge plus for me! A few more pictures would be nice, but this books is about actually cooking and using the pan rather than just providing food porn. I am going to get this book for the younger women in our family along with a cast iron pan for the holidays. It’s time to add cast iron cooking to our repertoires!
Thank you Netgalley and Sasquatch Publishing. I am excited to try some of these recipes. But there are not as many images which is more helpful to me. But it was enjoyable to read through.
Thank you, NetGalley, for an e-ARC of Cast Iron Skillet One-Pan Meals by Jackie Freeman.
As a lover of cast iron skillets, this cookbook is a win. A wonderful collection of main meal recipes using a variety of ingredients. Freeman gives the reader recipes that are simple to replicate yet seem extravagant. Most recipe items can be found in traditional grocery stores, or are items found in a well-stocked pantry. The beautiful photographs of each dish and the information on maintaining your cast iron collection make this a cookbook I intend to purchase.
I’m from the South so everyone has a cast iron skillet (my kids even had one in their play kitchen when they were little) but when I think of recipes using my cast iron it’s a meat recipe. Maybe cornbread. This cookbook turns that notion on its ear! I love a one pot meal and I love my cast iron. This cookbook combines the two! & there are so many recipes for meals I never would have thought of!
Pros:
*Great tips for caring for your cast iron.
* Super unique recipes
* One Pot dinners in the cast iron (seriously mind blown)
* Easily found ingredients.
Cons:
* I wish there were more pictures but there were a lot. I just like to see what a meal is supposed to look like.
Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for this arc. I have multiple cast iron skillets of all shapes and sizes, this book was very informative and full of tasty recipes.
Almost everyone who owns cast iron pans loves them. They are perfect for many things, and for those who want to expand their cast iron repertoire , Cast Iron Skillet One-Pan Meals: 75 Family-Friendly Recipes for Everyday Dinners is the perfect way. Who knew that entire dinners could be made in one big cast iron skillet. This excellent cookbook has plenty of information in the beginning of the cookbook about cast iron; taking care of it, storing it, etc. The remainder of the cookbook has mouthwatering recipes, many with beautiful photographs.
The recipes are written in the traditional way so they are easy to follow. In fact, most of the recipes are fairly quick and easy and suitable for both beginning cooks as well as advanced cooks. The recipes include a chapter on vegetarian meals; perfect for vegans and vegetarians, but also tempting to carnivores. There are also chapters including seafood, Poultry, Beef, and Pork. While the recipes are fairly easy, they are absolutely not boring; in fact, they are unique and will help make mealtime interesting instead of same-old, same-old; they will make us actually excited to cook something new. There are however, some mainstream dishes such as a Tuna Noodle Skillet Dinner and Turkey Pot Pie (with a twist). The recipes have flavors borrowed from all over the world including Middle East, Asia, America, Mexico, Italy, etc.
If you love your cast iron cookware, you’ll also love this excellent cookbook. It will make an excellent addition to any cookbook shelf.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
Yum! This book had tons of great recipes, many of which seemed doable in terms of the number of ingredients and skills required to complete them. The directions seemed clear, the pictures were lovely but straightforward, and it's the kind of cookbook you could come to rely on. It also comes with great information on purchasing, caring for, and maintaining your cast iron skillet. I'm looking forward to trying a few recipes from the book.
Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for providing an early copy of this book!
I liked this book and found the variety of recipes to be great. I think any sort of one-pan/one-pot recipe situation is great and takes into account that for people who want easy recipes with not a lot of clean-up, they need that sort of recipe.
Pros:
There was a lot of variety in the recipes. Aside from having different sections for poultry, beef, etc., the types of cuisine that were being provided had variety.
All the recipes seemed pretty simple. I didn't get the impression that any of these recipes were designed to be overly complex.
I liked the section on tips for cooking with a cast iron pan.
Cons:
I wish each recipe had a picture with it.
I'm a picky eater so a lot of these recipes either didn't appeal to me or would've required some tweaking based on my tastes.
Overall, I liked this book and would for sure take a look at it once it's released as a physical copy. While most of the recipes weren't exactly to my tastes, those that were looked really yummy.
I’m a big fan of cooking in my cast iron skillet, so I was excited to read this cookbook. I appreciated that there was a variety of recipes, even vegetarian. I plan on trying several recipes in this book, like the skillet turkey chili, meatballs with caramelized onions and lemon rice, and the Reuben Dutch baby. So many options for wonderful one-pan meals to try in this book!
