The Silent Child by MJWhite was a very interesting novel. Cora as a character had a very strange gift and it gave this book a bit of a magical feel.
Apart from Cora, it followed a fairly normal storyline for a thriller and while I enjoyed it, it didn't feel like anything special.
A murder and a mute child are they linked? Second in this series,a book with good characters and plenty of twists and turns.
This was a stand out book of 2022 for me and i really enjoyed reading more about Cora. It was clever and i loved the way MJ White can write characters and plots in such a way. With different aspects all starting to intertwine it leaves the reader guessing and puzzling till the very end
Wow. Another great book in this series.
A great story line with lots of twists which had me hooked. The believable characters made the story.
I look forward to reading more
When a body is discovered at an abandoned Suffolk farm, DS Rob Minshull and the squad believes it’s the latest casualty of the drugs war terrorising rural communities. But when the victim is identified as a well-respected local teacher, the case is thrown wide open.Read it! You won't be disappointed
Wow……Damn this was entertaining
One mystery thriller done to perfection!
This is the second book of the Cora Lael series but this is the first time I have started reading this series. And I actually enjoyed reading this book really much.
The story starts with a discovery of a dead body in a lonely barn. The body was identified that as of a school teacher named Oliver. Meanwhile, Cora is asked to see a teenager named Lottie Arundel who stopped speaking a year ago. As Cora gets to work with Lottie, she finds that there is a similarity between Lottie and the current murder case that Cora sets to work with the detectives to find the vicious killer and the reason why Lottie stopped talking a year ago.
This was a completely compelling and gripping thriller. The author has done a good job of drawing the reader into the story thus making the reader feel like they are a part of the story as well. There were some twists and turns, the story gets more and more interesting towards the middle and the end, when you find out that even the victim has some sort of a dark history. The story talks about sexual molestation happening in shcools and how the teachers seemed to have ignored it and I like how the author handled the sensitive issue. Neverthless, the ending really gripped me and completely unexpected. I cannot wait to read more books from Cora Lael series! Worth five stars.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the Hera for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.
This is book 2 in the Dr. Cora Lael series. Cora is an educational psychologist with the unique ability to pick up auditory messages from someone's emotions. It has almost overwhelmed Cora, and led her into great risk in the first book. In this second book, Cora is learning to control and filter the overwhelming messages. She's agreed to help with a teenager who hasn't spoken in a year.
In the meantime DS Rob Minshull and his team are called into investigate a body found in an abandoned barn. It's believed the barn has been used by local criminals funnelling drugs into Sussex. .However, the body is soon identified as that of a popular young teacher. A teacher at the school Cora's patient attends. To complicate matters further, a local vigilante group has recently been formed and creating a headache for the police.
Some may find this a dark book and it should come with a trigger warning for anyone not comfortable with crimes against children. Eventhough it is a second book, it's not necessary to read the first. A great deal of backstory was woven into the book. Overall an enjoyable read.
Cora Lael and Rob Minshull are fast becoming my favourite crime solvers. Cora has a new job and is settling back into life and coming to terms with her gift which she hopes will come in handy when she is assigned Lottie a teenager who has stopped speaking. Rob and the team have a murder in a remote barn with not many clues.. when Cora finds a link between Lottie and the dead body she becomes involved in the Suffolk polices enquiries. With a dark plot and a lot of twists this was a really gripping read which I wasn’t able to put down. I
This is the second book in the Dr Cora Lael series. After the events of the previous book, Cora is working in a new role in education. She is trying to help teenager Lottie who has stopped speaking, meanwhile DS Rob Minshull is investigating the murder of a schoolteacher nearby. Cora and Rob soon realise that things are more connected than they imagined, and just how dangerous uncovering the truth might be.
This book had a lot to live up to after such a fantastic start to the series, The Secret Voices, and I am thrilled to say that I was not disappointed!
Without a doubt the best part of the book is the characters. They are so genuine and you get a real insight into theirs thoughts and feelings. I found myself fully invested in their lives, relationships and jobs. I loved the plot, it was completely captivating and very well-written. Cora's unique ability gives the book such an originality that you won't find anywhere else.
I am delighted that there is another book planned because I am not quite ready to let go of these brilliant characters. I highly recommend The Silent Child for a book that you won't bne
Thank you NetGalley and Hera Books for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
The second book in the Cora Lael series, it can be read as a stand alone. Dr. Cora Lael is a psychologist with a spècial gift. She is asked to work on the case of Lottie a teenage girl who has stopped speaking. A dark read in places. For me the first book was better. All in all a good read.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.
4.5 stars that I will round up to 5 gladly.
The Silent Child is second in the series and it the writing and story just keeps getting better.
Cora is back and she is determined and will go to any lengths to help Lottie who has not spoken in over a year.
What is Lottie holding back . Could she have a secret that is so devastating that it prevents her from speaking.
DS Rob Munshull and his team are racing against the clock to solve the murder of a popular teacher.
The pages fly by with twists and turns and an ending I did not see coming .
There is a lot of depth to the story and one that will keep you thinking for a long time to come.
I can not wait until Book 3 to see what Cora and Rob will be doing.
Take time to read the author's notes as they are powerful words.
Thanks to NetGalley and Hera Books for a page turning read.
Dr. Cora Lael is an educational psychologist with a unique ability to hear voices and emotions from objects people have touched. She is called upon to work with a girl who has stopped speaking. The girl, Lottie Arundel, attends a school where a teacher has recently been murdered. DS Rob Minshull is working the case. This was a page-turner in the "just one more chapter then I'll go to bed" vein. Lots of suspense and good characterization.
Apparently this is the second book in the series, which I didn't realize when I requested the book. It made sense, but I'd suggest reading the books in order. The premise was quite interesting, and the book and characters held my interest. Cora's gift was briefly recapped, so to learn more, it'd be necessary to read the first book in the series. I enjoyed the alternating POV chapters. The characters/team worked well together, and the team dynamics were interesting. The pace was appropriate for the genre, and chapter endings leave the reader turning the pages.
Really well written story around a difficult subject. Loved the police characters, who displayed the petty jealousies that are often missing from books of this type. Really liked the character of Cora and found myself wishing I’d read the previous book. Very interesting idea of someone who can hear voices from inanimate objects. I will be looking out for the next one in this series.
This is the second book in the Coral Lael series and can be read as a stand alone. The characterisation is good, with a very interesting plot. A good pace, with plenty tension and a stunning ending. I thoroughly enjoyed the read and would recommend it. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
This is the first book I've read by this author, but it won't be the last. I did not realize that this was the second book in a series, and I do feel like I missed out on some character development from the first book. It was still a very enjoyable story, and I was surprised by the twists and turns. I find Cora's gift very unique and it gave the book something special.
Thanks to NetGalley for the book to review.
The Silent Child is the second book in the new Dr Cora Lael series by MJ White (Miranda Dickinson). Not many authors many to cross genre successfully but Dickinson is one of the few to accomplish this challenge flawlessly.
You do not need to read the first book (The Secret Voices) but there are numerous references to events in that novel, so I would recommend that you do read it, so as to understand the relationships between the characters - having said this, the author is careful not to give away any spoilers.
Dr. Cora Lael has a particularly unusual gift, she is an "emotional synaesthete". And I'll rely a quote from the author to explain the condition better than I can, "an ability to hear voices from objects, previously touched by people." Cora is working as an educational psychologist and has come to work with a young girl called Lottie Arundel, a troubled teen who stopped speaking a year ago. Cora starts to suspect that Lottie's trouble may be linked to some suspicious events at her secondary school - events that involve the recent murder of a popular teacher.
Be warned that there are regular references to grooming and abuse in this story and while the scenes are not graphic, the references are frequent and the ending is rather gruesome.
A fun and rather unexpected, and as long as you are not bothered by the trigger warning, then I would recommend.
The second book in the Cora Lael series.I really enjoyed the first installment in the series and was pleased to have the chance to read this book,I wasn't dissapointed this was a great read I could'nt put it down.
Cora is a great character and I'm looking forward to reading about her next case.
Thanks to Netgalley and Hera Books for the ARC
