I absolutely adored this book. Reading this was such an experience, it felt like actually falling into the story and being part of the race to find the ring alongside the characters. I loved the dark and creepy atmosphere of this book (old relics, bones, magic, hollowers, and an unforgiving world). I also loved the MC, she’s strong with a realistic world view and is fiercely independent. Literally cannot recommend this book enough and I’ll definitely be reading it again.

A race to claim an Arthurian ring. Dark world, magical creatures, brutal competition. Action adventure YA fantasy on the dark side of things. Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read the book for an honest review.

This one was super interesting! Like Lore, I found some parts of this - the worldbuilding especially - a bit over confusing and convoluted. Yet, the heart of the story still shone through! After about 60%, I couldn’t put it down. I absolutely need to know what happens next!

My favorite read of the year! Beginning was a little slower while giving all the backstories but once it got going, oh boy! The plot twist after plot twist kept this book interesting the entire way through. It has everything from mystery, magic, curses, love, sisterhood, and loss. The last few chapters have had me on an emotional roller coaster and then the cliff hanger ending has me desperate for a sequel to come quickly! I will definitely be recommending this book to everyone I know!

Although it took me a while to get into the story, I ended up really enjoying it. Tamsin is such a great character and I love her humor and strength. I loved the whole cast of characters and I thought they meshed really well together. Even though it was slow at times, the ending was incredible and I can't wait to see what happens next!

Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Children's for an early copy of this book! Below is my honest review.

When I saw this book on NetGalley, I was so excited to request it. Alexandra Bracken is one of my favorite authors, so this was a highly anticipated read for 2023 (or 2022 since I read it this year).

Summary of the plot:
In this book, we follow Tasmin Lark, a Hollower (someone who steals relics and sells them to people for money). Typically, Hollowers have magic called One Sight that allows them to see magical symbols and curses. But Tasmin doesn't have magic for some odd reason, which puts her at a huge disadvantage against other Hollowers, so she depends on her intelligence and wit to steal.

Due to the abandonment of her "foster father", Nash, Tasmin has become very closed off and scared to let people in. The only person she cares about is her brother, Cabell, who is cursed to essentially become a werewolf at random moments. Because Cabell is turning at a frequent pace, Tasmin goes on a quest to find the Ring of Dispel, a ring that has the power to break any curse (with a price). She ends up joining forces with Emrys, her fellow enemy Hollower who wants to be free from his father's grip, and Neve, a sorceress who is trying to find out more about her background.

They end up in another land, where curses are just the beginning of their problems.

Thoughts on the book:
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I think it had a really nice balance between being character-driven and plot-driven. Tamsin isn't the main character that everyone likes. In fact, she can be really blunt and mean sometimes. But because the readers get a good look into her thoughts, it's easy to understand why Tamsin is the way she is. I think Tamsin developed naturally through the book: not too fast, not too slow.

Aside from her relationship with Cabell, I liked seeing her banter back and forth with Emrys. They have so many soft moments together and it makes my little teenage heart beat faster. Seeing Tamsin also build a relationship with Neve was also very touching.

In terms of the world, I'm not going to lie, but I got lost in the sauce. While I understand the general gist of the story, there are a lot of details and stories and names. I found myself forgetting a lot of minor things (which is no major fault on Alexandra Bracken) since I was reading the book over a course of three days. I do like how the story isn't so much a retelling of King Arthur. It goes beyond the bare bones.

The ending is a little tropey, but honestly, I don't really care that it's tropey. I just want to read the next book! I'm a little mad that I have to wait over a year for the second book, but at least I got to read an early copy.

Would I recommend this book? Yes!

I wanted to like this one but much like Lore by the same author, the premise for this one is great but the execution of the actual text was not. The mythology for me was lacking, and the characters felt dull and uninviting. There didn't seem to be much... direction for the plot, and I didn't feel a connection to the characters.

I devoured this book in one sitting and boy am I glad I did. I wouldn't have been able to put down Bracken's imaginative storytelling, compelling characters, and incredible fight scenes. I am entranced by anything she writes and can't wait to recommend this book to everyone.

It was a bit of a slow read at parts but it was an interesting premise with endearing characters. I thought the book was going in one direction and was surprised by the end. That ending left me speechless and I already want to know what happens next.

I really love this author so I was very excited to review this book! It did not disappoint and I could not put it down all day! The story was full of adventure and depth but fast paced enough that I never felt bored. I will be purchasing this book and recommending it to all of my family and friends.

Thank you Netgalley and Knopf Books for Young Readers for this eARC, these opinions are my own. This was such an exciting read! Tamsin is searching for a cure for her brothers curse so when a sorceress offers her a dangerous job she takes it, even though her enemy Emrys wants the job as well. But Tamsin doesn’t have the ability to see magic and when the quest has her looking for the father that abandoned her she teams up with Emrys to go to Avalon the Otherworld Realm that was once ruled by King Arthur. Will all be as it seems when they arrive? Can the two trust each other? Will Tamsin find her father? I enjoyed Tamsin very much and also really enjoyed Neve, Cabell, and Emrys! This was a fun fantasy with lots of action and intrigue! I liked the uneasy partnership between Emrys and Tamsin! Alexandra Bracken create another wonderful world! This story will make you laugh and will provide twists especially at the end where it’s twist after twist! All very heartbreaking! I can’t believe that this book is it even out yet so it’s that much longer to find out what’s next! But I’m excited to get my hands on the printed version when it comes out! I recommend if you like fantasy stories and if you’ve enjoyed Alexandra’s previous works!
