Great illustrations, great representation, but the story was so confusing. It would have been better to start the story slower so you can grasp what is happening, who is who, and what the plot is about.
I like the illustrations of this graphic novel. They are pretty attractive. Especially the usage of colors.
The story is not my type or it might needs add more contents in it.
I'm giving this 4 stars because I really enjoyed the art, but I think the story was actually more like 3 stars. I thought the ending was definitely too rushed, and looking back, the buildup of her power didn't make much sense either. I loved Lia as a character and seeing all her emotion but I felt the story was wobbly and not sturdy enough.
Stunning and spectacular! The first volume of Season of the Bruja is a gorgeously crafted and vibrantly illustrated graphic novel about loss, love and culture….just wish it was a kindle copy so I can come back to it!
Thank you Netgalley and Oni Press for providing an e-ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review!
This was a very cute but short start to this story. More volumes will come, and I am genuinely interested in where the story will go. It covers multiple supernaturals that have certain relations with each other, each one fascinating in there own way.
Althalia is a bruja; tasked with keeping the power and stories of the ancient ways from fading fully into history. After an encounter with a priest, she must grow into her powers and realize her destiny, before the priest and the church reach their ultimate goal: destroying the last bruja.
Though this was an enjoyable read, it did not feel like something blew my mind. However, not everything that I read must always blow my mind. This was a quick and fun in-between read and worth your time.
I was so confused at the beginning of this story that I honestly thought I was reading volume 2 instead of 1. It literally dropped you into the middle of a fight and that was that, which I guess is ultimately not a bad thing, but also kind of immediately threw me right out of the story. From the description "...paranormal museum with her friends, a real-life Chupacabra and a were-coyote." 1: I didn't know the museum was paranormal, and 2: I thought her friends were a dragon and a wolf. So now I feel even more confused.
As for the story itself, I enjoyed it; I enjoyed seeing Lia grow in power, but to what end? I do love me some morally gray characters :) Also, I liked the artwork, and the covers are beautiful.
In the end, I'm thankful to NetGalley and Oni Press for the chance to read this arc, but I don't think I will continue with the series past this point.
Season of the Bruja Vol. 1 by Aaron Durán is a really enjoyable witchy read for spooky season. It follows Althalia, who works in a paranormal museum with her friends, who just happen to be a Chupacabra and a were-coyote, while also living with and caring for her fiercely cool abuela.
It’s a really beautifully told story of religious oppression and preserving culture. The illustration, by Sara Soler, truly brings it to life and made me just want to physically step inside the story.
This is a fabulous read for Hallowe’en or any season, as well as supporting Latine authors! I really can’t wait to see what’s next for Althalia 🔮
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an e-arc in exchange for my honest review.
Season of the Bruja starts off with a bang with our main character, Althalia, in action against a demon that possesses a little boy. She chooses a dangerous route to save him & that seems to be a reoccurring theme throughout the story. Althalia knows she is a Bruja and the last of her kind, so when her abuelita goes missing, she does anything in her power to try and bring her back.
So follows a heartwarming story of love and acceptance as Althalia strives to save her abuelita. She finds herself immersed in a world of those against the existence of Bruja, and so her adventure begins with a bang as we learn more of the Bruja culture, the spirit world, and the creatures she surrounds herself with.
The art for this comic was beautiful and the dialogue was well done. I really wish it did not move as fast as it did, as the storyline was thrown off because of the pacing several times. I wanted more background on what a Bruja is, including descriptions of the creatures that were major characters in the story. 3/5 stars.
I wanted more from this so I'm glad this is just volume one. The story is a little confusing at times because I think you need to infer a lot from the photos and not just text. But overall, it is beautiful and I love reading anything having to do with Latine spirituality
Thank you to NetGalley and Oni Press for the eARC!
This graphic novel is incredibly beautifully illustrated. The creatures, monsters, and different worlds we were able to see were colorful and stunning. Althalia works in a museum with her friends, neither of whom are fully human. I enjoyed the small peek into Althalia's culture, but would love to have a bit more backstory on this and her friends (who ARE you? How did you get this way?) in potential future volumes. I do hope we get more!
This was such a marvellous read! Once I started it, I couldn't put it down. The plot was gripping and the main characters' motivations and desires were easy to understand. I loved Abuela and Althalia and I particularly enjoyed their relationship. I would love to see how their story continues.
The story wasn't just enjoyable to read but it was also informative and it shed light on historical events.
The artwork is exquisite!
Thank you to the publisher for allowing me access to this book and to the author and artist for making something so great!
This was so cool! The little I know about the Aztecs (and the Maya and Inca since they were all lumped together in world history) focused primarily on their architecture and “brutality” with a very one-sided perception of their culture and practices. I loved seeing more from a modern descendant of the Aztecs and combining the supernatural with decolonization.
My only struggle was that it felt like I was missing information when the story opened. An epic sequence is unfolding and I made it to about halfway through the book before fully understanding what had actually been happening in the opening scene.
I am, however, super excited for the next volume, and am happy to wait!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I've already read the three first issues of Season of the Bruja separately and I just needed to finish this first volume and to know what will happen to Althalia our bruja heroine and her friends and grandma after the museum incident.
I liked it mainly because it was inspired by latin culture. I loved the illustrations with the amazing colors. I thing that the story would be more liked by a middle grade audience. Anyway, I found it really enjoyable. Also, the message of Aaron Duran at the end of the book was really touching and I hope that he'll write some new adventures of Althalia.
This graphic novel reads like one of Rick Riordan's books (whose writing I adore to pieces). It is perfect for the Halloween season, with its magic, ambiance and witchcraft, and gods of death, and everything in between!
So, we start off with a bang - a dark artefact and a possession by an evil god. Then we meet Althalia (our main heroine), her granny (she is by far one of my favourite personages from now on) and her friends (totally share their love for good food).
This story has pretty much everything you can possibly want - a smart protagonist, supportive friends and family, a little impossible quest, a set of compelling villains and the best part - it is all based on lore and stories, and myths from Latin America.
What I particularly like, is that authors make a gentle introduction to the history behind the discovery of America, which later on may engage younger audience to look deeper into that. Topics that are brought up here are important to be explored and explained.
As to the plot, even though I find it well-paced and engaging overall, the ending feels a little too rushed, too hard to believe in. It would be absolutely stellar, if the writers elaborated and refined the aftermath of the main intrigue here.
I really do hope that this graphic novel will get its continuation, the authors will keep creating and we will keep reading and enjoying.
Great art throughout. However , I felt I lost out on not knowing much about the history of the mythology behind everything and so got a bit lost at times and didn't always make sense of what was going on.
Don't think I'll continue with the rest of the series.
ARC provided by NetGalley.
This was an okay graphic novel - it all felt too fast and wasn’t explained very well? I wasn’t impressed with the characters or the plot BUT the art is beautiful and I know that even if it isn’t of my interest, I will have students who will really enjoy this story. For that, I will be purchasing for my library!
Season of the Bruja is the story of Althalia, a very talented witch. Destined to be the last of her kind, she's tasked with keeping the power and stories of the ancient ways from fading fully into history.
Althalia works in a paranormal museum with her friends, a real-life Chupacabra and a were-coyote. First of all, Althalia's work sounds so fun and interesting, where do I sign?? Althalia lives with her abuela and she is super cute and kind and good. Her friends are also very nice and they care for her very much. Althalia is a very chaotic person and does not really think before acting, which is why her friends are in a constant state of worry for her.
I really liked the style of this graphic novel. The illustrations were very pretty and the colours too! This is a lovely way to start de Halloween season.
I know some people have complained about the Spanish of this book, but I am from Spain, so it was fine for me, but keep it mind and don't be surprised!
Thanks to Netgalley and Oni Press for this copy!
I adored the art style of the comic and how the different characters were portrayed. It's an adorable story that also delves into generational trauma and loss of culture.
It did feel a bit sudden at many points, not leaving you enough time to really care what happened and why and was quite predictable. But this could all be developed further in the next issues, so I'll look forward to reading those!
The Season of the Bruja is a lovely graphic novel full of colours and magic. I like that the narrative is mostly about love for the grandmother of the main character. I loved all of the magic creatures, but I would be happy to know more about them. I know this story is more situated for Latin-American readers and I did not understand most Spanish phrases. On the other hand, this is amazing for multi-cultural knowledge. I mostly read classical books, so graphic novel was my new experience, and I liked it! I am truly glad for this opportunity from Oni Press, thank you so much!
THIS WAS AWESOME! THE PERFECT ALTERNATIVE TO A REGULAR BOOK FOR THIS SPOOKY SEASON!
There is so culture and action and magic here! And THE ART! Great art! Soooo detailed! I'm amazed with how detailed the settings are special around cultural and magical elements. I loved the colorful depictions of the Latin American culture, the use of folklore like the Chupacabra and, (of course!) the fact that Althalia is following her family Brujeria traditions and her relationship with her grandma! The grandma is THE BEST! And this book is I new fav of mine now!
