I want to be clear that my opinion remains objective, as always. It is certainly a mailing, but my principle is to remain objective and impartial, out of respect for myself and the publisher. Special thanks to Netgalley for sending this. Now that all this is clear, let’s turn to criticism:)

As you know, I tend to choose my works according to their coverage, here is not out of the question. Burja first reminded me of a book that absolutely wants to read, "Daughter of the Moon Goddess" by Sue Lynn Tan, this cover with the same flowers just sublime.

Then the son of my reading, he reminded me of several other works that you must also know, such as Miraculous the cartoon for children or two young children become heroes thanks to their akumas, The series Warrior Nun or the girl gets implanted in the body a religious sign that gives her powers to fight demons.

As well as the Guest series, with a man and a priest who perform exorcism to dispossess men of demons.

I asked for this book, because I thought it was perfect for the season, the Halloctobber, Halloween challenges, you will have understood this book deals with magic, witchcraft, and the gods of death, and everything else! What could be more perfect for the season.

This story highlights the following themes: quest, family, support and trust in others. All surrounded by convincing villains, based on the traditions and stories, and myths of Latin America.

We also talk about love, our heroine is ready to do anything to save her grandmother.

You will have understood it is a beautiful work with beautiful boards, alas I find that despite a rhythm that increases, the end and in my opinion precipitated, too difficult to believe. Everything ends too fast and too well. I know there are two other volumes, I’m curious to know what will happen.

An absolutely gorgeous story about family, heritage, and magic. Althalia and her abuela are attacked in a museum and thus begins a chaotic story full of heart and longing.
Visually stunning, my only criticism is that I want more.

I had the joy of receiving a free of copy of this comic for review purposes. Althalia is one of the last brujas. When a priest murders her abuela she has to wrestle with her greif, her powerful magic running a bit haywire, the priest trying to come after her as well and Althalias friends Chuey and Dana trying to help. The art of this book was absolutely gorgeous. The characters were interesting and fun to read about. The book is steeped in Hispanic culture and was super interesting.

i’m trying to get more into graphic novels given that i like to read japanese manga (major one piece fan), so season of the bruja came at the right time to explore that concept.

here we accompany althalia in a mexican brujeria influenced world where the church sees witches (brujas) as a threat and wishes to exterminate them all for the “greater good”.

reading this graphic novel was such a confusing experience to me. there are key details in the story and characterization that just aren’t there. it’s very action packed and focused, and unfortunately the lore and context of the world in itself is left behind. i understand that they might want to leave certain information to the following volumes, but when your audience is confused because they have no idea what prompted something, it can be frustrating.

another aspect that was a let down was the lack of graphic optimization. you see the speech balloons in 4K but the important bits – aka the drawings – are so blurry in its normal size (too small) and even worse when you zoom it in. i would expect a graphic novel, whose purpose is to tell a story with visual aid, to actually fulfill that role. hopefully when the real deal comes out it’s in better quality, though i won’t really read any further volumes.

i appreciate the respect and carefulness in talking about brujeria and mexican culture, but that was about it for me.

Trigger warnings: death of a loved one and mention of colonialism.

A Mexican inspired witchy graphic-novel following Althalia, who is a Bruja. Unfortunately, the Church wants to rid the world of the Brujas once and for all. Althalia must decide what is more important to her: her abuela or continuing her path with magic.

I requested this graphic novel because the title and cover drew me in. I absolutely loved the art style and how certain ritualistic items from the Aztec were woven into the story. I was intrigued the entire time and loved that the author and illustrator decided to put in Spanish words and sentences, however, the pacing was a bit off at times and I did not see enough of the characters' development.

I will definitely read the second volume once it is released.

Thank you to NetGalley and Oni Press for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I requested this just because I loved the cover and thought the art style was pretty, and I'm so glad that I did! Season of the Bruja was a fun and heartfelt story, and I loved how friendship and family were at the heart of it. It started off in the midst of action and stayed pretty fast paced throughout the story, which was pretty fun too. I did get a little confused about what was happening at one point, but things got cleared up after I read a bit further. This is definitely a story I could see teens and adults loving, especially in a library setting!

Season of the Bruja follows a young woman as she comes into her magical abilities and faces reemergent threats from the past. From a young age, Althalia knew she would someday be the last of her kind—a bruja, tasked with keeping the power and stories of the ancient ways from fading fully into history.

This was an interesting read. Most are afraid to approach the subject of spirituality outside of being Christian; yet I’m intrigued and excited that this work exists. It’s important to the culture.

I enjoyed reading the story as well as the visuals. It helped pull the story together. Ready for volume 2!

This book has such a fun and exciting premise and the art inside is breathtaking, unfortunately, I really struggled following the plot line of this story as it fell straight into the deep end without any prior explanation. Sometimes this works, I just didn't think it did here!

That being said, I would still LOVE to see where this story goes as the characters introduced were all so complex and vibrant! Especially our main character who is appearing to be rather chaotic. Excited to see where this all goes!! The combination of not fitting in between two sides of both your culture and heart will really resonate with a lot of people- this story is going to be so important.

Overall, the reading experience is very fun but a little confusing! This isn't always a bad thing!

I read this comic book from NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Season of the Bruja follows the story of Althalia, a bruja in training who works in a museum with her friends: a Chupacabra and a were-coyote (at first I thought she was a fox, sorry). One day she has an unfortunate clash with a catholic priest and her world turns upside down.

I’m a huge fan of Sara Soler’s work (read Us, please) so I was looking forward to her next big project. And I wasn't disappointed. Her style is flowy and dynamic. She uses bright and vibrant colors that really pop in the action scenes. I also love how she draws petals and flowers. And faces! So expressive! She is just so good with body language.

I was a little confused at first with that in media res opening. But I ended up enjoying the story a lot, the worldbuilding is interesting and engaging and I wouldn't mind a second volume now that I know all the characters.

Season of the Bruja is a fun and fresh comic, and now I have to learn how to make conchas.

I received an arc for this book from NetGalley.

The art of this comic is really beautiful. My problems lie with the story itself, and then mostly with the characterbuilding and the pacing.

I learned more about the characters from reading the description on goodreads than from reading this first volume. Should have read that first, I guess. Cupacabra and were-coyote? Never once mentioned in volume. Sure we see animal people, which confused me, and even more when it was never even mentioned at all. So I figured that maybe that's just the normal of that world, like in books such as [book:The Tea Dragon Society|34895950], but all other characters seem human like and they do pretend to be/look like humans, so I guess not?

This whole volume feels a bit rushed and the story jumps forward, without providing the much needed background information. Scenes that should be impactful are not because we just don't know these characters, nor do we know/understand the world they are in. Is it our word, but with hidden magic? Is it completely different? I'm not sure.

This made it hard to really get into the story and I ended up not really caring about it much. It definitely has potential, but it just didn't work for me.

Genuinely, one of the most heart-warming graphic novels I've read in a very long time. I really loved how family centred this book was, and I also loved the character growth I witnessed in the span of a few pages. Can't wait for the next one!

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for let me read an advanced copy of this story in exchange of an honest review.

2.5 estrellas

Season of the Bruja follows a young woman named Althalia, tasked with keeping the powers and the ancient ways of her people from fading into obscurity. Althalia works in a paranormal museum with her abuela, the only family member she has left. But with a young priest after her and the fear of religious persecution for what she believes in, Althalia doesn't have much time to hone her skills. It is a race to keep her family safe and protect their powers.

Gorgeous artwork, brilliant colors, and a fast-paced story. This turned out to be a series. I found it a bit hard to feel for the main character and wish she had a bit more depth, but I am still looking forward to seeing what happens next.

The first thing I noticed in Season of the Bruja is the beautiful, vivid art and the art style in general. The story itself is fast paced and engaging, it was easy to get into it.

At one time, I was a bit confused bit I figured it out - in general, the narration is very clear.

I did overall enjoy the Volume a lot and can see myself reading future issues.

I picked up the first issue when it came out and LOVED IT. After having to quit buying comics for personal reasons, this was a serious that I deeply missed. Having a chance to read it today was great. The story is wonderful and I really hope it continues in the near future.

Thank you Net Galley and Oni Press for giving me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The illustrations were so beautiful in this graphic novel, perfectly paired with such emotion. It was full of such hope and humility, it was incredible. I loved the characters and their development throughout the book. I would recommend this to everyone, even if you’re not a big fan of graphic novels.

I totally loved this book, the drawings and illustration were amazing. I loved the character and also her grandma is totally cool. I loved her two friends the most, they were supportive, caring and loving. Everything you wish as a friend, and they can shapeshift, which made it ten times better. This story was very cute and the journey of Lia and how she grieved the death of her Grandmother. I think it was very understandable what she felt and did because of her death. It was ended well, and there was not a cliffhanger. I would love to read more of her story and her friends.

Thank You to NetGalley and the Publisher for providing me with a free eARC in exchange for an honest review!

This was a great graphic novel. The art style was beautiful and vibrant. I loved how the story was told, and Althalia as a main character in general. While I was confused at the beginning of the story, it didn’t take long for the storyline to unfold and make more sense. Her relationship with her Abuela is adorable, and I love how I can relate to that as someone who is very close to my nan too. I love how this book brings up discussions on stolen artifacts and claiming heritage back. The magical system itself was something very interesting, that I would love to learn more about in further volumes. I would love to see more about her friends too, they were really interesting, and I would love to know more about their museum! Overall, this is a great graphic novel, which I would recommend reading!!!
